Qualcomm to ship dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragons in fall
Mobile device chipmaker Qualcomm will begin shipping its delayed dual-core Snapdragon chips this fall, and devices running on them may also arrive before year's end. This could include smartphones and tablets, the company said on Monday. Low-cost notebooks could also be powered by the QSD8672 chip, which will be available with a clock speed of up to 1.5GHz.

VMware Fusion gets an update with some important Mac fixes
VMware has pushed out an update for their virtual machine software for Intel-based Macs.
Version 3.1.1 includes:
Improvements to iSight Camera access
Fixes an issue where an incorrect disk error message pops up after A Mac hard crash while working in VMware
Fixes audio recording issues when the device output was not 44.1 kHz
The update is free for all VMware Fusion 3 users, and the update notice should appear when you launch the app. This is the 4th update to version 3 since it was launched in October of last year.

HTC Droid Incredible finally returns to stock, not a moment too soon
If the rumors of an August 18th Android 2.2 update prove true, we'd say Verizon Wireless couldn't have picked a better time to get HTC's Droid Incredible back in stock. Sony jabs iPhone game quality with new PSP spot
Sony has stepped up the directness of its Marcus PSP ads with word of a new spot attacking Apple directly (viewable below). The spot has Marcus slag the iPhone as not meant for "big boy games" and points to a number of newly discounted $10 PSP games, such as Twisted Metal: Head-On and Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, as proof the iPhone isn't as good a gaming device. An iPhone is for "texting your grandma or calling your girl," Marcus said.

Briefly: App Store category changes, Stanford iPad program
Earlier this month, Apple added a new "Try Before You Buy" section to the App Store; the area has since been removed, however, to be replaced by "Great Free Apps." The original change was seen as potentially allowing full-featured trial apps that could be disabled after a set period. Currently, selecting Great Free Apps takes people to a page that includes only New & Noteworthy and Our Favorite categories.

Flash Player 10.1 goes final for Nexus One handsets, available to download now
Google just confirmed it at an Android / Flash event in San Francisco, and sure enough, our trusty Nexus One just found, downloaded and installed the final (read: non-beta) version of Adobe's Flash Player 10.1. It weighs in at just under 5MB, and it's looking as sweet as ever so far. Nexus One owners can hit up the Android Market to get their download on, and we'd highly encourage you to bookmark a few dozen Flash sites just to rub in the faces of your dearest iDevice-owning friends. iPod fire delays rush-hour Tokyo subway train
An unidentified, malfunctioning iPod brought a Tokyo subway train to a halt for an eight minutes during this morning's rush hour, Reuters reports. Around 8:20AM passengers complained about a burning smell, forcing the train to come to a halt while officials went searching for the source. A female passenger then came forward to show that her iPod had burst apart after overheating.

GPUs democratize brute force password hacking
It seems that the availability of increasingly powerful GPUs, when combined with brute-force password cracking tools, is making it increasingly easy to crack passwords -- even if they're extremely well thought out, with symbols and quirky capitalization and all that. Man attempts to turn MacBook Air into keyboard PC
The attempted revival of keyboard PCs may not have exactly caught on in a big way, but it looks like modder Bart Reardon is certainly a fan -- so much so that he ripped apart a perfectly functional MacBook Air in an attempt to make his own. While he's not quite finished yet, he has managed to get all the main components to fit under an Apple keyboard and Magic Trackpad, and he's apparently almost ready to replace all the tape holding it together with something more permanent. A chunk of code found within Apple’s iOS 4 suggests the company is preparing to field test next-generation iPhone and iPad units. Modu W (a.k.a. T-Phone) scores FCC approval
Modu's tiny, Android-based T-Phone still hasn't made much of a public showing outside of a rare in the wild appearance last month, but it has now finally turned up at the FCC, which hopefully means its getting closer to a release. Judging from the manual that the FCC has kindly provided, it looks like the phone is now called the Modu W, but complete specs are otherwise still a bit hard to come by. Bose upgrades in-ears with iPhone-friendly models
Bose will soon release new in-ear headphones made specifically to work with multimedia-capable smartphones. The three will include the IE2 headphones and MIE2 and MIE2i mobile headsets. The last two have built-in microphones and call control buttons, with the MIE2i made to work with the iPhone, iPad, iPods and recent Macs, granting access to some of the devices' voice-capable apps and navigate music. Each will include proprietary Bose technology to boost sound quality and three sizes of StayHear tips more comfortable than with previous Bose in-ears.

Safari extension highlight: Safari Access Keys
With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.
Fellow keyboard jockeys will appreciate this one. Safari Access Keys displays a site's keyboard shortcuts in the browser's toolbar. Many sites like Wikipedia employ keyboard shortcuts, which make navigation faster and easier. However, they aren't always readily apparent or even consistent. Safari Access Keys solves the problem by displaying each key combo clearly.

News: Survey: 31% of U.S. iPhone 4 owners may switch to Verizon

Adobe's CEO: 'we've moved on' from Apple's argument, and Flash still rules
You can only humor someone for so long, and it seems as if Adobe is at its breaking point with Apple. Arrrrr. The pirates have plundered StarDunk
You'd think that an iOS game that was originally priced at $0.99 and is now selling for $1.99 wouldn't have a piracy problem.
You'd be wrong.
French game developer Godzilab recently tweeted that they've seen a 37.5% piracy rate for their massively mulitplayer online basketball game, StarDunk. New iPhone, iPad model codes set up for iTunes activation bypass -- CDMA versions, maybe?
So BGR's got a tipster lined up with alleged details from within iOS 4 beta firmware that shows a section dedicated to bypassing the usual iTunes activation scheme for three new product codes: iPhone3,2, iPhone 3,3, and iProd 2,1. Actually, these product codes aren't "new," per se; we saw all three of them in the iPad's firmware back in April, but they've yet to make the giant leap to officialdom. What's different here, then? iOS 4 may have auto-activate code for CDMA iPhones
Plans for a CDMA iPhone and an EVDO iPad may be supported by code Apple has tucked into iOS 4, tips from within Apple may have shown. Code exists that will detect the devices running on the alternate networks and will auto-activate them without having to connect to iTunes. The code has always existed to help carriers test GSM models, BGR said, but has normally been pulled just before the gold release appears.

If legitimate, the rumored iTV upgrade of the Apple TV could still be just a bridge towards a full-scale HDTV, argues Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Adobe CEO: "we've moved on" from trying to please Apple
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen in an interview this weekend claimed a more neutral stance in his company's ongoing differences with Apple. News: South Korea to open iPhone 4 pre-orders
South Korean iPhone carrier KT has said it plans to begin to take pre-orders for the iPhone 4 later this week. Tata bringt zwei Elektroautos nach UK und Skandinavien

Die indische Autofirma Tata, die kürzlich noch wegen ihrer sich selbstanzündenden Nanos in den Schlagzeilen war, will Anfang nächsten Jahres den britischen und skandinavischen Markt mit Low-Budget-Elektroautos beglücken. Robotic yellow submarine finds massive river under the sea, tons of other trippy stuff
Researchers at the University of Leeds have employed a robotic yellow submarine to fund and begin documenting a massive river under the sea, known as a submarine channel -- the first ever directly observed. The river is so large that if it were on land, it would be the sixth largest river in the world. The torpedo-shaped autosub itself is a 23-foot long, unmanned craft which can be programmed to stay just safely above the channels where they'd encounter damage. Apple controls impede progress of iAd campaigns
Apple's insistence on controlling output -- combined with the task of learning the platform -- is severely affecting the rollout of iAd campaigns, according to several ad executives. The Wall Street Journal notes that of 17 official launch partners, only Nissan and Unilever had iAd campaigns for much of July. Since then, only Citigroup, Disney and JC Penney have joined the fray. Eco: Kinderpornos lassen sich doch nicht so einfach löschen

OmniVision preps VGA cam for ultra-thin notebooks, tablets
OmniVision today unveiled a new webcam sensor aimed at notebooks and tablets with very thin displays. The OV7727 shoots at just a VGA (640x480) resolution but uses the same backside illumination as larger phone and dedicated camera sensors. Infrared laser shown to quicken heart rate, gives hope for ultra-small pacemakers
Here's an interesting one. Just years after a researcher in Japan realized that lasers could stimulate nerves, a professor of biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University along with cohorts from Case Western Reserve have found that the same is true with the heart. By using an Infrared laser on an early embryonic heart, tests were able to show that the muscle was "in lockstep with the laser pulse rate." ASUS lowering Eee PC shipments due to iPad
The iPad's cooling effect on netbooks may have had its first clear evidence after an ASUS presentation at an investors' conference on Friday. Pleco 2.2 übersetzt Chinesisch via Kamera in Echtzeit
Bislang haben wir noch nicht wirklich von der Pleco Chinesisch-Wörterbuch-App gehört, obwohl bereits zwei Versionen davon zu haben gewesen sind. Pleco basiert auf der OCR-Technologie (Optical Character Recognition) und kann wie bei Google Goggle, chinesische Schriftzeichen zumindest schonmal ins Englische übersetzen, was auch uns einiges bringen dürfte. Pleco 2.2 ist nun die erste App, die Texte in Echtzeit übersetzen kann, also das, was über die Kamera reinkommt direkt ins Englische bringt und für iOS4 ab September erhältlich sein wird. Attempted iPad theft at Salt Lake City Apple Store
We don't have the whole story yet, but apparently on Saturday there was an attempted robbery at the Salt Lake City retail store -- the front window was smashed and the perpetrator tried to get away with several iPads, but as you can see in the gallery below it appears that he was taken into custody by police.

Time Warner Cable iPad app brings interactive program guide
Time Warner Cable is the latest cable, satellite or IPTV company to soon bring out an iPad app that will make watching TV easier. Thus far, it involves an interactive program guide that can be used to schedule recordings and act as a remote control, but eventually the company plans to let viewers stream programs to their iPad wherever they are. Users would also be able to watch part of a program on their portable devices while returning from work, for example, and continue to view the program in their living rooms once they get home.

Slate unveils native iPad magazine
Web magazine Slate has launched a native iPad application. The app is intended to better format content for the tablet, for instance by allowing offline reading, a touch-oriented interface and in-app access to videos and podcasts. More Canon details: 60D body, G12 coming, LaForet teaser
Canon's pre-Photokina camera launches may have been elaborated almost in full today through a string of leaks. One tip focusing on the often rumored EOS 60D suggested to Canon Rumors that it will use a plastic body slightly smaller than the 50D. Android Voice Actions tout hands-off texting, e-mail
Google at its special mobile event today showed a slew of new voice features to help give Android an edge. Voice Search has now been upgraded with Voice Actions that can perform many tasks just through speech recognition. It's now possible to write e-mail or a text message solely through voice. Liquidmetal deal clears out $10.9 million in debt
On the same day it agreed to a patent licensing deal with Apple, Liquidmetal managed to pay off $10.9 million in debt, an 8-K filing with the SEC reveals. "The foregoing obligations were paid with proceeds from the previously announced strategic licensing transaction with Apple Inc.," one sentence in the document informs. Specifically, AppleInsider notes that the payback was split three ways: $8.2 million went towards outstanding senior secured convertible notes, while $2.4 million went to Ricardo Salas and Norden LLC, and $300,000 was paid to HANA Financial.

(Update: new video) id Software co-founder John Carmack upturned the game industry at the QuakeCon expo today with word his company had ported the Rage engine to the iPhone. The graphics keep many of the features of the full engine for modern consoles, including non-repeating Megatextures and advanced lighting, but still runs at 60 frames per second on an iPhone 4. It still runs properly on an older iPhone and, due to the mix of hardware and software, could "kill anything done on the Xbox or PlayStation 2," he said to Kotaku and others at the Texas gathering.

iPad becomes top reading device for owners
iPad owners appear to be showing a preference for reading content on their tablets rather than using a computer or obtaining print editions, according to a survey from copywriting agency Cooper Murphy Webb. Oracle sues Google over Java use in Android
Oracle tonight sued Google for allegedly infringing on seven patents as well as copyrights relating to Java. The software pioneer claimed that Google had ignored Sun's patent portfolio since the middle of last decade and had even hired parts of Sun's Java team in the years before Oracle's buyout of Sun last year. The patent fringing was allegedly damaging as Android was competing directly with Java as a phone platform, whether for apps or the OS itself.

ASUS confirms Eee Pad with Android, Eee Tablet at October

Sony is planning to step up its e-reader efforts today based on details from a new rumor. One of the most "trusted sources" for Sony Insider claimed both the Reader Pocket Edition and Touch Edition would get updates. Apple's Regent Street outlet in London, England is the currently the busiest Apple Store in the world, according to the company's senior VP of retail, Ron Johnson. Pentax has added Beige, Chocolate, Olive, and Pink versions of the Pentax K-x
to its US lineup, bringing the number of color options for US shoppers to twelve. All four colors have been available in Japan for some time. German mag spills Nikon D3100, lens details
Almost all doubt about the Nikon D3100 has been removed today as German magazine Foto Digital's September edition has prematurely posted details. The entry-level DSLR will in some ways pass most of Nikon's existing line and will have a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor, trumping the resolution of everything but the D3x. This and a brand new EXPEED 2 image processor will help it reach a light sensitivity of ISO 100 to 12,800, or more than the D90 and D300s.

App Store clocks over 20,000 iPad titles
The iPad has achieved a major milestone with over 20,000 native apps now being present at the App Store. The progress is relatively quick, as the 10,000 mark was hit in June, and the iPad itself only launched on April 3rd. For comparison, the App Store as a whole only achieved 20,000 titles in February 2009, some seven months after its opening.

NVIDIA signs Rambus licensing deal, lawsuits continue
NVIDIA today struck a licensing deal with Rambus to use its patents for some memory controllers. The deal will see Rambus collect a one percent royalty on single data rate controllers and two percent for any double data rate controllers, ranging from basic DDR up to parts of the GDDR5 used with the newest video cards. RIM posts BlackBerry spying 'rules,' wants equal treatment
RIM today posted a set of guidelines that it said would dictate the limits of how countries such as India could monitor its services. The BlackBerry maker would refuse to grant access beyond what's legally required by a local government. Hacker fixes PDF exploit on unsupported Apple handhelds
Acting without the help of Apple, a prominent hacker has closed a major security vulnerability on the two oldest iOS devices. "Saurik," responsible for the Cydia distribution platform, has released a patch that eliminates the PDF exploit used to run JailbreakMe. Study has 34% of iPhone users ready to jump to Verizon
AT&T could see as much as a third of its iPhone subscriber base leave for Verizon when a CDMA iPhone is ready, market researchers at Morpace found on Friday. Of those in a study who already have an iPhone, 34 percent plan to get a new model only when Verizon is carrying Apple's device. Apple manager charged after leaking iPhone, iPod secrets
The US Marshals Service on Friday arrested Apple worldwide supply manager Paul Shin Devine for money laundering and wire fraud relating to leaking iPhone and iPod secrets. Officials accused Devine of taking over $1 million in illegal payments from iPhone and iPod accessory makers in return for internal data that helped them negotiate better terms with Apple. It's unclear what was transmitted from what the San Jose Mercury News had learned, but the companies were material suppliers from mainland China and Taiwan, South Korea and Devine's native Singapore.

ATI Radeon HD 6000 graphics may ship in November
A leak at the end of this past week has revealed that AMD's next generation of ATI graphics, "Southern Islands," should ship this fall. Likely to be called the Radeon HD 6000 series, the first parts will be unveiled in October and ship in November, according to Digitimes' industry contacts. Apple hire hints at iPhones with near-field wireless payment
Apple has quietly hired an expert in Near Field Communications (NFC) that hints it might use short range wireless on future iPhones. Benjamin Vigier was brought on by the company in July as the product manager for a previously unknown Mobile Commerce division. WiMAX 2 planned to top 100Mbps in real world by 2012
Intel's upcoming WiMAX 2 standard should be much faster than the existing standard in practice, the WiMAX Forum's marketing lead Declan Byrne said this weekend. Existing WiMAX often tops at just 3-6Mbps according to estimates from Clear and Sprint, but the new 802.16m version should provide average speeds over 100Mbps, Byrne told Computerworld. Samsung Galaxy Tab leaks hint mediocre specs, Vodafone deal

iPod nano bringt Tokyoter U-Bahn zum Erliegen
Um Apple will es einfach nicht ruhig werden. Am Mittwoch fing Apple in Japan an, iPod nanos umzutauschen, da es in jüngerer Vergangheit zu Überhitzungen der Batterien gekommen ist. Am vergangenen Freitag musste in Tokyo gar eine U-Bahn zur Rushhour gestoppt werden, da in einem der Waggons ein "seltsamer Geruch" festgestellt wurde. Der Übeltäter, ein iPod, der gerade anfing Rauchzeichen von sich zu geben. Verletzt wurde keiner, um was für ein iPod es sich genau handelte, weiß man auch noch nicht. Immerhin acht Minuten kam der Verkehr so zum Erliegen, das kann in Tokyo eine kleine Ewigkeit sein.

A really useable iPad case from ZooGue
I love my iPad, but using it presents some challenges. It's uncomfortable to hold because it's heavy. On a lap, it's too flat. You can stand it up against something, but the iPad is pretty slippery and eventually it will fall over.
I've looked at a lot of cases. Not finding one I liked for use in the home, I bought an InCase for travel, and it has worked really well. Unfortunately, you can't use the iPad when it's in the case.. Using the iPad around the house was a bit of a pain. I tried some little picture frame stands from discount stores, but the iPad is heavy so the stands I found were not very trustworthy.

Oracle beerdigt OpenSolaris
Oracle hat jetzt offensichtlich eine Entscheidung zur Zukunft des quelloffenen Betriebssystems OpenSolaris gefällt. Das geht aus einer internen Mitteilung an Solaris-Entwickler hervor, die einer dieser Entwickler, Steven Stallion, in seinem Blog veröffentlicht hat. Demzufolge werden die Open-Source-Entwickler keinen täglichen Zugriff mehr auf aktuelle Zwischenversionen, "Nightly Builds" genannt, von Oracle Solaris mehr bekommen. Petition um mehr Schriften-Unterstützung beim iPad
Jeffrey Zeldman, Webdesign-Urgestein und Mitbegründer vom Web Standards Project, hat auf seiner Webseite eine Petition gestartet. Die Petition verlangt von Apple, dass der iPad-Hersteller eine Schriften-Synchronisation oder ein Schriften-Management-Tool für das iPad anbietet. Zeldman lobt die iWork-Apps für das iPad, jedoch sei der endgültige Nutzen dieser sonst so genialen Apps aufgrund ihrer auf eine handvoll Schriften limitierte Font-Unterstützung stark eingegrenzt. «Helvetica ist nicht gleich Franklin oder Gotham.», dass wisse natürlich auch Apple. Jene Firma, die mit dem Ur-Mac erstmals echte Schriften auf den Computerschirm brachten. Zeldman, wie auch viele andere, arbeiten zum Beispiel zum Teil für Wochen an Präsentationen in Keynote auf dem Mac, bei einem Sync auf das iPad gehen dann alle Schriften verloren bzw. werden durch eine «ähnliche Schrift» oder Helvetica ersetzt.

Smooth-Stone plant Server-Chips auf Basis der ARM-Architektur
In einer neuen Finanzierungsrunde konnte sich das texanische Start-Up Smooth-Stone rund 48 Millionen US-Dollar an Investitionsmittel sichern, um die Entwicklung von ARM-basierten Server-Prozessoren fortzusetzen. Poor Apple. The company just can't catch a break these days. On Wednesday, Apple Japan began offering customers iPod nano replacements, giving in to local government demands to better address an overheating battery issue affecting Apple's first generation iPod nano players. Apple verteilt 10.6.5-Build 10H525 an Entwickler
Apple hat den registrierten Entwicklern dieses Wochenende ein erstes Entwickler-Build von Mac OS X 10.6.5 verteilt. Der Build trägt die Nummer 10H525 und ist gute 500 MB gross. Die Entwickler sollen ihren Fokus beim testen dieses Builds vor allem auf die System-Komponenten iCal, Mail, Drucken, 3D-Grafiken, QuickTime und X11 legen. Aktuell werden in den Seed Notes zwei ‘bekannte Fehler’ gelistet: Zum einen können Benutzeroberflächen-Interaktionen bei Web Views — also zum Beispiel beim iTunes Store innerhalb von iTunes — unter Umständen ein Doppelklick (statt einem einfachen Klick) benötigen um ausgeführt zu werden. Des weiteren wird ein Exchange-Problem gelistet, bei welchem ein Verbinden mit dem Server zu einem HTTP-400-Error führen kann.

IBM kauft Softwareanbieter Unica für 480 Millionen Dollar
IBM wird Unica übernehmen, einen Anbieter von Marketing-Software für Unternehmen. Der Kaufpreis beträgt 21 Dollar pro Aktie in bar. Epic 4G review
Of the seemingly countless variants of the Galaxy S that Samsung's in the process of deploying around the globe, one stands out in a couple very unique (and important) ways: Sprint's Epic 4G. The Epic hangs on to a couple of the Galaxy line's most important characteristics -- namely the 1GHz Hummingbird processor and the 4-inch Super AMOLED display -- but adds in a sliding landscape QWERTY keyboard, support for the wickedly fast WiMAX network that Sprint shares with partner Clearwire, and a handful of other notable one-off customizations.
