AT&T deploying software fix for slow upload speeds over next few weeks
Looks like AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent have finally sorted out the software glitch that's resulted in slow HSPA upload speeds in certain markets -- we were just told on the record that a patch is being rolled out and the update will be completed over the next two to three weeks. That should mean iPhone 4 and laptop data modem customers should start to see their upload speeds creep back to higher levels after being capped at UMTS rates for the past few weeks, so that's good news -- let us know if things are getting better for you, yeah?

Rumor: TiVo stock climbs on talk of deal with Apple for new Apple TV

Woz coming to the Big Bang Theory

Our own Steve Wozniak is scheduled to appear on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory sometime later this year, the cast and crew told an audience at their Comic-Con panel this weekend. Woz is already no stranger to television, of course, but I think this is the first time he's appeared on a non-reality show, so we'll get to take a look at the guy's acting chops. There weren't any details on who he'd be playing (presumably himself), or how he came into contact with the show's four nerdy scientists and/or their pretty neighbor.

Syncro SVN Client 6.0 gets speed boost, enhanced interface
Syncro Soft today updated its Subversion client, launching Syncro SVN Client 6.0. The software eases document and code sharing between developers. It can browse repositories, check for changes and track version histories. It can also track resources, examining history and identifying where a problem occurred, and resolve conflicts using a three-way editor to merge files. Apple to sell iPhone 4 in Canada from $659 unlocked
Apple has quietly confirmed that it will sell the iPhone 4 unlocked in Canada. A carrier-independent version will start at $659 CAD ($639 US) for a 16GB model and scale to $779 CAD ($755 US) for a 32GB version. It's not known if Apple will offer pre-installed micro SIM cards as with the iPad, but these usually cost between $5 and $10 CAD when bought separately.

Augen's $150 Android tablet hits Kmart circular, coming to stores later this week
We can't say we've heard of Augen before, but the company certainly sparked our interest (and that of Kmart circular readers) this weekend with its $149.99 7-inch Android tablet. Oh yes, you heard right shoppers -- the small Florida-based shop is bringing an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, 2GB of storage and 256MB of RAM to a store near you for just 150 buckaroos. And according to an Augen spokesperson, it will have access to the Android "Market App Store." That sounds pretty awesome for the pricetag, but we -- along with a number of readers we've heard from -- haven't been able to locate the 7-inch tablet at any Kmart retail location just yet. Apple at least appears to be following through on a rumored campaign to eliminate retail waiting lists, anecdotes suggest. Android 3.0 already in testing, may hit 10in Motorola tablet
Android 3 is now believed to be in field testing as a check of online analytics has shown examples in the field. Some phones running the Linpack online benchmark have been caught running 3.0, 3.0.1 and 3.2. Watch AVI videos with yxplayer
Filed under: iPadA month or two back, I shelled out US$4.99 to pick up a copy of yxplayer, a video playback utility available on the App Store. Yxplayer isn't particularly user friendly or over designed. I am also about as far away from yxplayer's core demographic as anyone can get. (More about that later.) And yet, I'm going to give it a double pair of thumbs up and recommend it to anyone who owns a video-capable camera that shoots AVI video.

Hints drop of new iMacs, Mac Pro, 27-inch display tomorrow
Apple's rumored desktop Mac refresh may come as soon as tomorrow if a hint is any indication. Historically accurate John Gruber implied in the notice for a new podcast episode that the new iMacs, new Mac Pros and a 27-inch Cinema Display could all be available on Tuesday. Google Music being sped up for a November launch?
Google is hastening talks to launch its Google Music service before the end of the year, purported insiders said on Monday. Its Android lead Andy Rubin is in "accelerated" discussions with the Harry Fox Agency to get access to at least 27,000 songs on top of other deals. The move to smaller groups suggested to the New York Post that Google had already struck deals with major labels and was focusing on rights for independents.

Mac mini pricing gaffe may lead to Taiwanese lawsuits
A serious pricing mistake may have legal repercussions for Apple in Taiwan, reports say. On July 23rd, Apple briefly listed a Mac mini with 8GB of RAM as costing only $19,900 NT, or $619 US. A Mini in that configuration would normally cost $47,000 NT in the country, or about $1,462 US.

OpenGL 4.1 trumps DirectX 11 features, adds more
The Khronos Group today published the first specification for OpenGL 4.1 in what's considered a coup for desktop graphics. The standard catches up to DirectX 11 in visual features and overtakes it in integration with other standards: it can now sync graphics with OpenCL to take advantage of video hardware's general-purpose math features. Mobile app developers also now have full compatibility with OpenGL ES 2.0, theoretically letting a developer write an app for the iPhone or Android without having to change the visual effects when porting to a computer.

AT&T confirms fix in progress for 3G upload speeds
AT&T today confirmed reports from readers that its 3G upload speed bug is being fixed. Alcatel-Lucent has developed a patch that restores upload speeds on the iPhone 4 and other devices that support faster HSUPA upload speeds. South Korea upset over iPhone 4 delay
The decision to drop South Korea from this week's list of iPhone 4 launches has generated some controversy in the country, says the Wall Street Journal. Apple CEO Steve Jobs actually announced the move on July 16th, saying that it would "take us a little longer to get government approval there." The current Korean iPhone carrier, KT, initially insisted that a July 30th launch was still on track; the company was later forced to admit that the phone would arrive "in the coming months."

AT&T expands outdoor Wi-Fi to Charlotte, Chicago

This is a wild one, and we're still parsing through the announcement, but on the surface it looks like the Library of Congress has added new anti-circumvention exceptions to the DMCA that, among other things, allow people to tweak their handsets for the purpose of installing legally obtained software -- known as jailbreaking in iOS land, and rooting in the Android / webOS world. Im Oktober sollen dann das hintergrundbeleuchtete Infopanel, das gerade mal 149,99 Euro kosten soll. Microsoft lizenziert ARM-Prozessordesigns
Microsoft hat sein Abkommen mit dem Chip-Designer ARM so umgestaltet, dass der Software-Hersteller jetzt seine eigenen ARM-Chips konstruieren könnte - theoretisch zumindest. Apple has confirmed plans to release the iPhone 4 in 17 more regions on Friday. In North America, Canada will finally get the device; the bulk of additional launches are in Europe, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Riskternatives: Conquist and Strategery

I looked at two world conquest-style games that follow from the original Risk board game: Strategy and Conquist. Admittedly, I'm not a big Risk fan. I much prefer games that involve more building and planning and less random dice rolling. With that confession on the table, I did find that both games were well made and offered many nice features.

G.Skill kriegt 48 GB RAM auf ein SR-2 Motherboard

iLife '11 set to go 64-bit, drop iDVD?
Some significant changes are coming to the next iLife suite, a "well-informed" source claims. The software is first of all said to be going 64-bit, potentially providing significant performance boosts within Snow Leopard. Allegedly being dropped as a default app is iDVD, Apple's disc-authoring tool, which as been available for Macs since 2001. iMac also growing scarce for in-store reservations
Recent word of thinning Mac Pro supply has been joined today by secondary reports of the iMac now facing similar shortages. Customers trying to reserve the all-in-one for an in-store pickup are finding some 21-inch and 27-inch models listed as "unavailable." The voided stock is considered a likely sign by AppleInsider and others that Apple is readying for new models expected soon.

HTC setzt auf Super LCD in Desire und Nexus One

HTC hat bekannt gegeben, dass sie in Zukunft bei den Modellen Nexus One und Desire auf Displays mit Super-LCD-Technologie zurückgreifen werden. Scheinbar kann der Bedarf an AMOLED-Screens durch Samsung nicht bewerkstelltigt werden. Später in diesem Sommer noch soll es dann so weit sein. UC San Diego researchers repurpose 3D HDTV for heads-up VR system
Off the shelf 3D HDTVs may still be a bit expensive from a consumer's point of view, but they're a downright bargain compared to the usual high-end virtual reality gear. This gave some researchers at UC San Diego a bright idea: they've paired a $2,300 Samsung 3D TV with a half-silvered mirror and a touch-feedback controller for a haptic-enabled heads-up virtual reality system (or HUVR) that costs just $7,000 (without head tracking). Apple-Preispanne beim Mac mini führt zu Ärger in Taiwan
Apple könnte rechtlichen Ärger in Taiwan bekommen. Das Unternehmen nahm kurzzeitig im Online Store auf der Insel Bestellungen für einen Mac mini mit 8 Gigabyte RAM für einen Preis von 19.900 Taiwan-Dollar entgegen – circa 480 Euro. Der reguläre Preis liegt aber bei 47.000 Dollar, circa 1.130 Euro.

Parallels hat ein Wartungsupdate für seine Virtualisierungslösung Parallels Desktop veröffentlicht. Die neue Version 5.0.9370 behebt einige Bugs beim Einsatz virtueller Rechner mit Windows- oder anderen Betriebssystemen.

Sicherheitslücke in WPA2-Schlüsseln entdeckt
Die Sicherheitsexperten von AirTight Networks haben eine ihrer Auffassung zufolge schwerwiegende Sicherheitslücke in WPA2-Netzwerken gefunden. WPA2 gilt bislang als sicherstes Protokoll für WLAN-Verbindungen. Die vom AirTight-Manager Sohail Ahmad entdeckte Lücke lässt sich allerdings aus dem Netzwerk heraus ausnutzen.
