Hulu Plus on iPad, PS3 limited by TV licenses
Hulu today acknowledged that Hulu Plus preview users on other devices can't get access to the entire video catalog. Owners on iPads, PS3 consoles and other non-traditional Hulu viewing hardware are finding that they currently only get a subset of all the video available on the website. The issue is a sore point for early PS3 users, as they must pay for PlayStation Plus to have access before the finished Hulu Plus goes live.

Foxconn denies Apple subsidizing wages
Filed under: iPhoneSome rumors from last May that Apple was paying a part of the salary of workers in the Foxconn assembly plant have been denied by the giant Taiwan electronics company.
A report in DigiTimes today quotes a Foxconn executive as saying the "rumor is purely speculation and Foxconn has never received any subsidies from Apple."

23% of IT managers may already use iPads
Nearly a quarter of IT managers are already using iPads, ITIC found in a study of the segment. As many as 23 percent already own Apple's tablet, and 18 percent plan to buy one within the year. While it didn't equate to handing iPads to employees, the news suggested the device would have a "spillover effect" with business as those controlling deployment for it and other Apple hardware knew what it could do for personal use.

Flurry: In-app purchases generating lots more revenue per user
Filed under: App StoreAnalytics firm Flurry has announced that in-app purchases are generating $14.66 per user per year in June of 2010, which is a few times larger than it has been in the past. Previously to 2010, the games tracked were generating only a few bucks per user per year, but in January the total jumped to around $9, and it's now in the double digits. Flurry says that money doesn't include ad revenue -- it's strictly profit from in-app purchases, either unlocking features or selling virtual goods.

Verizon believes smartphones could take down Microsoft
At the Mobilebeat 2010 conference, Verizon director of new technology and development, Humphrey Chen, spoke publicly about how smartphones will soon encroach onto the home PC market. The provider is even considering offering a docking station complete with a keyboard, camera and monitor that could effectively turn a smartphone into a desktop PC. Chen also names the high-speed, next-gen 4G mobile broadband network it's building up as another way to bring Internet speeds to mobile devices closer to those of a home PC.

Lost iPhone warrant withdrawn, Gizmodo agrees to cooperate in investigation

The search warrant against Gizmodo editor Jason Chen has been withdrawn, the EFF reports today. Chen's house was searched a few months ago after the Gawker blog reportedly purchased the lost iPhone 4 prototype, but the San Mateo District Attorney has decided to drop the warrant and return all seized items to Chen. Apple claims 3 million iPhone 4s in three weeks
As a part of the press event announcing a response to iPhone 4 reception problems, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today revealed that the company has sold "well over" 3 million iPhone 4s in a space of just three weeks. The company typically keeps quiet on sales numbers until major milestones or regularly-scheduled keynotes and conference calls. Google closing Nexus One store after clearout of stock
Google today effectively brought completely international distribution of the Nexus One to an end today as it said it was now finally near closing its online store. The company had previously warned of a switch to carrier deals but now says it's shipping only its remaining inventory. Support will remain, but customers still wanting a phone afterwards will have to turn to the carriers selling the phone in a specific country.

Symbian^4's home screen surfaces, shows new UI design
As part of making some source code available, Symbian has quietly made available the first shots of Symbian^4's implemented home screen and has revealed some significant changes. The UI has changed from its concept form and now has a permanent, iPhone-like status bar at the top. There's now a menu just below for common features like the apps and task switcher, and the interface has more touch-friendly menus overall that include pop-ups where the finger is pressed.

Jobs defends iPhone 4 reception as industry-wide problem
In revealing the company's planned case and refund strategy to deal with iPhone 4 reception problems, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today defended the device's flaws as common in the industry. "Well we first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone, Nokia, Motorola other phones have this issue," said Jobs, referring to signal cutting off when covering part of the edge. The executive noted that RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC's Droid Eris and Samsung's Omnia II are all affected by grip, potentially losing signal completely.

Apple to give free cases, refunds to fix iPhone 4
In response to ongoing media attention about iPhone 4 reception problems, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today announced that the company is going to give out free cases to customers. The offer applies to anyone buying an iPhone through September 30th, and anyone who has bought one of the official Apple Bumper cases is eligible for a refund. Because it can't make enough Bumpers on its own, Apple says it will be outsourcing other cases to meet demand. People can apply for a case at Apple's website beginning late next week.

Apple dropped a lot of interesting numbers during the press conference this morning, from both their own research and AT&T's data. Steve Jobs also said that three million iPhone 4s have been sold to date, so let's put this into perspective.

Steve Jobs hat an der heutigen Pressekonferenz betreffend dem iPhone-4-Antennenproblem bestätigt, dass dem Marktstart des neuen Apple Mobiltelefons in den angekündigten 17 weiteren Ländern — unter anderem in der Schweiz, Österreich und Italien — «Ende Juli» nichts im Wege steht. You can apply for the free case through Apple's web site starting later this week. The company plans to source cases from third parties due to a shortage in bumper cases, so iPhone 4 customers will have a choice of a few different cases. If you are still not satisfied with the iPhone, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of your purchase. Jobs clears up proximity sensor fix, white iPhone 4, and international plans at press conference

Steve Jobs cleared up a few pending iPhone 4 issues quickly near the end of today's press conference today. First, he said that Apple would be releasing a software fix soon for the proximity sensor issues customers have been experiencing. A fix for that problem would be available in the next software update.

Not much of a surprise here, but Apple has now finally revised its previous "by the end of July" iPhone 4 launch date for some of the remaining international countries to a specific date: July 30th. That includes Canada, a whole host of European countries, plus Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. Intel hires Apple, Palm veteran for smartphone design
Intel landed a win for its fledgling smartphone efforts today as it hired Palm's Senior VP of Product Development Mike Bell. Kein Liveticker bei Geek Out, sondern ein zusammenfassender Bericht.Erst gestern wurde bekannt gegeben, dass heute gegen 19 Uhr MESZ auf dem Apple-Campus eine Pressekonferenz stattfindet, in der es anscheinend (auch?) um das Thema iPhone 4 geht. Bei dem kurzfristig angesetzten Termin ist es fraglich, ob sich wie gewohnt die gesamte Apple-affine Pressemeute in Cupertino einfindet, oder sich nur Redakteure aus der San Francisco Bay Area auf den Weg machen. Entsprechend dünn könnte die „Live“-Berichterstattung im Netz diesmal ausfallen. Ein echter Liveticker ist ohnehin nur seriös, wenn man tatsächlich selbst vor Ort ist, finde ich. iPad demand still high
Filed under: iPadThree months after its debut, the iPad continues to sell extremely well, according to a study performed by America's Research Group (ARC). They surveyed 1,000 people and found that 8.4 percent said they already bought an iPad. Plus, another 6.1 percent said they intend to purchase one.

iOS 4.0.1, 4.1 fix signal reporting, leave drops intact
The most advanced releases of iOS -- 4.0.1 and the 4.1 beta -- do indeed have better reporting of iPhone signal strength, tests are said to show. Anandtech notes that the dynamic range in the new firmware is better, and that the range assigned to each signal bar is generally wider. The main exception to this is the fifth bar, which in the v4.0 firmware occupied a disproportionate amount of the scale.

Nokia shareholders call for CEO to resign; Palm deal ignored
Nokia shareholders began raising their voices late Thursday in a second call for company CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo to resign. Saarbrücker Forscher erfinden Ablaufdatum für Netzinhalte
Informatiker der Universität des Saarlandes haben ein Verfahren entwickelt, mit dem Daten und Bilder mit einem Verfallsdatum versehen werden können. Syphir gives you more Gmail filtering options
Filed under: Internet ToolsSyphir first attracted my attention when they announced that they were using OAuth for Gmail (meaning that you did not have to provide your login information to Syphir in order to use it). They have a $3 iPhone app that receives push notifications, but it will work without the app or even if you -- gasp! -- don't have an "iDevice."

There's been a lot of chatter going around the interwebs in the past 24 hours about the Droid X's exceptionally well-locked bootloader -- a situation that is going to make running custom ROMs considerably more difficult (bordering on impossible) compared to your average HTC. Specifically, the culprit is said to be a technology known as eFuse -- developed by IBM several years ago -- which allows circuits to be physically altered at the silicon level on demand. For the latest development in Google's mad quest for search engine efficacy, the company was granted a patent titled, in the necessarily wordy way that these things are, "System and method for modulating search relevancy using pointer activity monitoring." Essentially, the idea here is that mouse pointer movements can be interpreted to gauge someone's interest, so Google would track the mouse as it moves in and out of predefined regions of a web page, or hovers over certain regions for a predefined period of time. Sony Ericsson finally increases phone sales
Sony Ericsson ended the week on a positive note by recording a rare increase in the number of phones it shipped. The company moved 11 million phones in the spring; the number was still a decline from 13.8 million a year ago but up from 10.5 million in the winter. Its revenue also saw an uncommon year-to-year increase as it climbed slightly to the equivalent of $2.28 billion.

Firefox Home app reaches App Store
A new Mozilla iPhone app, Firefox Home, is now available through the App Store. The software serves as an extension of the desktop Firefox web browser, using Firefox Sync to carry over personalized data, primarily bookmarks. Here's an interesting tidbit from WIRED. Way back in 1999, the magazine ran a short piece in the Hype List section reflecting on the company's recent financial turnaround. You'll remember that Apple introduced the iMac in 1998, which was a huge success. The piece was written in April of 1999, just 3 months before the clamshell iBook was introduced at Macworld Expo in New York City in July of 1999.
Here's the interesting part. While reflecting on Apple's future, the snippet predicts that "The next iMac attack promises new lollipop laptops, a more serious series of professional machines and a wireless handheld dubbed the iPad." [Emphasis ours.]

Analyst: iPhone 4 fixes a mix of hardware and software
Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu this morning provided possible insight as to any fixes Apple might offer for the iPhone 4's reception problems in its press conference today. Talks with suppliers lead him to believe Apple is both changing the hardware and producing a firmware upgrade that, together, should reduce the signal drop when covering the antenna gaps on the iPhone. Powertread turns gridlock into electricity with a series of tubes
Getting stuck in traffic sucks, but thanks to a couple of Kiwis you might soon be feeling a little better about yourself while muttering about the brake-happy commuter ahead of you. An invention called Powertread by Justin Robertson and Brett Kemp looks to do something positive with the unending shuffling of queued cars. It's literally a series of tubes filled with water that, when run over, force their contents through a turbine to generate electricity. Google kann weiteres erfolgreiches Quartal präsentieren
Google hat für das 2. Quartal 2010 seine Unternehmenszahlen veröffentlicht und konnte im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum sowohl Umsatz als auch Gewinn steigern. Demnach stieg der Umsatz gegenüber dem zweiten Quartal 2009 um immerhin 24 Prozent auf 6,8 Milliarden US-Dollar, wobei das Wachstum gleichermaßen auf Google-eigene Webseiten mit einem Anteil von 66 Prozent und Partnerprogrammen mit einem Anteil von 30 Prozent zurückzuführen ist.

AMD has record $1.65B second quarter, still loses a little money
First, the good news: AMD pulled in $1.65 billion in revenue -- a record for the second quarter! Now, the bad news: the company still lost money. Just a (relatively) little bit, though, with a net loss of $43 million or $.06 per share. Gerücht: Apple kauft mit Poly9 einen zweiten Karten-Spezialisten
Apple hat nach PlaceBase mit dem aus Kanada stammenden Unternehmen Poly9 einen zweiten Kartendienst-Spezialisten aufgekauft. Poly9 bietet seine Dienste unter anderem in Skype an. Der Kauf wurde nicht bestätigt.

Google-Umsatz im zweiten Quartal um 24 Prozent höher als 2009

Google steigert Umsatz und Gewinn um 24 Prozent
Google hat im zweiten Quartal 2010 einen GAAP-Nettogewinn von 1,84 Milliarden Dollar erwirtschaftet, was einer Steigerung von 24 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum entspricht. AnandTech analysiert neue Empfangsanzeige

Up to 8 million iTunes users would get subscription music
As many as eight million iTunes users would be willing to pay for a streaming service on iTunes, the NPD Group found on Wednesday. An estimated seven to eight million have a "strong interest" in paying $10 or more per month either to stream music in general or to have remote access to their existing iTunes collections across many devices. If access to an existing collection were free, as many as 13 million to 15 million would use it, the researchers said.

Mozilla expects to outrun Chrome, Safari by Firefox 4 final
Mozilla, maker of the Firefox search engine, has developed a new JavaScript engine for its flagship product. PC maker Acer will begin selling its seven-inch tablet and a previously unmentioned 10-inch model in the fall of 2010, sources in the notebook industry claimed today. Though not identifying its sources, the report claims that the objective is faster response to customers by pulling in as many workers as possible. Apple is now much closer to taking Acer's third place position in the US computer market, according to an early IDC estimate. Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar in an investor note today made the potentially large claim that Apple already has a permanent design fix for the iPhone 4 antenna issues that prompted a sudden press conference this week. More features are being discovered in the first iOS 4.1 beta, which was released to developers on Wednesday. In the long term the most important is proper AVRCP support for Bluetooth devices. A Democratic senator from New York, Charles Schumer, has taken the unusual step of writing an open letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Nikon D3100 details leak: continuous video AF, CMOS sensor
One of Nikon's next major DSLR revisions received a large, detailed leak today that hints at a major rethink of the entry-level camera. The D3100 (rumored before as the D4000) should place a heavy emphasis on video and should be one of the first Nikon DSLRs to implement continuous autofocusing: the camera will constantly adjust the focus either when recording movies or when using the live view mode. Nikon was reported by Nikon Rumors as having already reportedly confirmed that continuous AF will come to future cameras, but hasn't said when.

Apple, Google, RIM said to have bid for Palm alongside HP
Apple, Google and RIM were three of the companies engaged in the bidding war over Palm before it was bought by HP, a potentially telling leak asserted this afternoon. The iPhone maker, likely Company A from Palm's SEC filings, was purportedly interested first in Palm's patents but would have gone so far as to keep funding Palm for at least awhile, possibly to slow down RIM's BlackBerries. Apple is believed to have lost the deal by underbidding before it reached the final phases.

Shipping delay notifications may back iPhone 4 refit
Apple likely does have a permanent hardware fix for iPhone 4 reception under its sleeve, new shipping notifications suggest. E-mails from Apple are said to be going out to some iPhone 4 buyers, according to AppleInsider, informing them of an "unexpected delay" in delivery. RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky points out that estimates for online orders have stretched out from 7 to 10 days to three weeks, which may hint that a changeover is happening in production.

Ovi Store developers unhappy with Nokia vs. Apple, others
Almost half of developers writing for Nokia's Ovi Store are unhappy with how it's run, a survey has found. Over 42 percent of those asked by Open-First think the store is "below average" compared to rivals like Apple's App Store or Google's Android market, and only 21 percent think it a better choice than the rest. The speed of the approval and posting process is considered the primary complaint as 55 percent are dissatisfied with how long it takes to reach the store.

iOS 4.0.1 SDK goes live to support firmware updates
In parallel with the release of iOS 3.2.1 and 4.0.1 for the public, Apple has posted iPhone SDK 4.0.1 for developers. The software is essential for creating iOS apps, as it includes the latest Xcode IDE and iPhone Simulator packages, along with other related tools. Programmers with devices upgraded to v3.2.1 or v4.0.1 must install the SDK to continue development, Apple cautions.

Kanex intros MiniDP to HDMI adapter with audio
Kanex has unveiled its latest product, the iAdapt HDMI V2, which lets newer Macs and other recent Mini DisplayPort device users output both audio and video to an HDMI device. AMD has record spring despite $43m loss
AMD today posted mixed but largely positive results for the spring. The firm's pure revenue surged 40 percent over last year to reach $1.65 billion, setting a record for the company, but was balanced by a $43 million net loss. Operating income also flipped from a $67 million loss the year before to $128 million today.

Apple won't be recalling the iPhone 4 at its event tomorrow, a slip has revealed tonight. While the source didn't rule out free cases or that a fixed version was coming, Apple isn't expected to require that customers replace their existing phones for new ones. Android Market sits at 70,000 apps, 100k estimate inaccurate
Google has confirmed that the Android Market currently contains 70,000 titles, far short of the 100,000 estimate recently published by AndroLib, according to numbers provided during the company's Q2 earnings call. The official numbers suggest the portal still pales in comparison to Apple's App Store, which is filled with over 225,000 apps.

iPad demand still strong over three months later
iPad demand has barely cooled since the tablet went on sale in April, America's Research Group gauged from a new study. Even as 8.4 percent of those asked already had an iPad, 6.1 percent still planned to buy. Apple: No early knowledge of iPhone 4 antenna issues

Bloomberg had reported that an Apple engineer had warned company execs about the problems with the new iPhone 4 antenna design early in the development process for the phone.

iOS 4.0.1 update: My iPhone 4 still can't place phone calls
Filed under: iPhoneI upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.0.1 and, big surprise (not), it still can't make phone calls if I'm holding the thing in my left hand using the kung fu grip of doom (i.e. the normal way I hold a phone). And, unsurprisingly, my 3GS still can make phone calls with the same grip in the same location.
I ran the Strength App, which we've discussed in previous posts about the iPhone 4 antenna issue. It is now showing a more nuanced level of how bad my home reception really is, but the bottom line remains the same.
