Home theater PC fans will tell you that one of the reasons they do what they do is because of the flexibility that comes along with a roll your own home theater PC. And so of course the latest HTPCs need to be able to play 3D movies, games and broadcast content. Now NVIDIA has been bringing 3D to PCs for years but the latest 3DTVs don't share as much in common with 3D PC displays as you might think. Some think this is as simple as getting a video card with an HDMI 1.4 port, but in regards to 3D it is just a spec and your existing video card you've had for years might just work. iPort: Wall-mounted home automation for iPad
I have already seen the iPad used in home automation -- Savant is using an iPad app to hook up to some of their home automation systems, using Apple's tablet to control the TV, a whole entertainment system, or even do some remote control of house lights or HVAC, or even monitor cameras remotely with a video feed. The iPhone gets third party apps for third party hardware, but the proprietary SDKs make the future sad
Leave it to Apple to make the process of building software to work with new third party iPhone hardware sound like some Kafkaesque nightmare. Here's the basic gist of it: Apple, just like always, has to approve any third party hardware that plugs into one of its iOS devices over the 30-pin dock connector. What's new is that before only the first party manufacturer could build software that works with that hardware, but now Apple is allowing that manufacturer to act as a gatekeeper for third party apps that would interoperate with its hardware. iPhone app enables augmented driving, at your own risk
Let me preface this post by saying that I'm an old fuddy duddy.
imaGinyze (US$2.99) is an iPhone app that provides an augmented reality Heads Up Display (HUD) for drivers on the road. When mounted to a windshield, it monitors incoming video information and produces overlays for roads, traffic, signs and more. An electronic voice announces lane changes, your proximity to other vehicles and other such distracting information.
I've been using alternative car- and lane-detection hardware units for decades, but they're called my eyes. Perhaps there's an obvious application for this app that I'm missing (smarter cars, enhanced night driving or what have you), and if so, please fill me in. But

Google sells out of Nexus Ones for devs, 'working hard' to get more; SLCD not alleviating backorders yet
The Nexus One retail situation has been pretty dire since Google humanely put down its own online store, leaving only paid developers with an easy option to get an unlocked unit (and only an AWS 3G version at that). Now, even that's been taken away -- at least temporarily -- thanks to unexpectedly strong demand that left Google to "blow through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time" and run up a backorder with HTC. Apple Trackpad hacked to use USB
The aesthetics and convenience of wireless devices add to their appeal, but buying batteries (no matter how special) is a bummer. MacRumors forum user MarkBog felt so strongly about buying all of those batteries that he hacked his Magic Trackpad to use a USB connection.
To accomplish this feat, he removed the pad's batteries, stripped a USB cable down to the red and black power wires and then attached them to a battery-sized wooden dowel. He then pushed the dowel inside the pad's battery compartment and presto! It worked.
It certainly won't win praises from Apple, but it will save the hacker (and the environment) from a pile of batteries. Well done.

Pandigital Novel review
It's our guess that the Pandigital Novel has been turning quite a few heads at retailers across the US during the last few weeks. How could it not? It's got a full-color, 7-inch touchscreen, 2GB of on-board memory, runs a skinned version of Android and is priced around $180 (depending on where you're shopping). Oh, and it's got access to Barnes & Noble's e-book store. About one-third the price of the iPad, we sure can see the attraction, but after attempting to read an entire novel on it we can't help but wonder how it found its way past product development and into the stock rooms of Walgreens, Bed, Bath & Beyond and JCPenny, to name a few. No-contract online iPhone sales ended by AT&T and Apple
If you were looking to buy a contract-free iPhone 4 from the online AT&T or Apple stores, you're now officially out of luck. Customers looking to purchase an iPhone 4 from either online store are now required to enter into a two-year contract.
If this news disappoints you, don't fret too much. According to an official statement from an AT&T spokesman, you can still get a contract-free iPhone, so long as you brave the outside world and head to an AT&T store to make your purchase. 9to5 Mac reports Apple will sell you one in their physical stores as well.

T-Mobile G2 again, this time with less Mr. Blurrycam
So we just got a second batch of T-Mobile G2 shots dropped in our mailbox -- and this time, you can get a much better look at the inner workings of the carrier's version of the upcoming HTC Vision. Looks like this bad boy slides and tilts, which eliminates the need for a kickstand and is very likely causing you to breathe an audible sigh of relief right about now. Time Inc. relents on digital magazine prices
For the past few months, Time Inc. has been at odds with Apple over magazine subscription models in the App Store. Phasma the terrifyingly adorable, six-legged insectoid bot
Is it possible for something to scamper into our heart and our nightmares simultaneously? Phasma is making a bid for that distinction. The hexapedal running robot, built by Takram Design Engineering, is based on Stanford's cockroach-inspired iSprawl, and is built to look all cold and mechanical at rest, but to move very much like an insect, churning those springy six legs in a tripod gait. StumbleUpon releases official mobile app
Social sharing network Digg has had their own, official iPhone app out for several months, and now StubleUpon has joined the mobile game. Seitdem das Apple iPhone und duzende Android- und Windows-Smartphones jedoch auf Kundenjagd gehen, schwindet bei den Finnen zusehends der Marktanteil im Smartphone-Markt. Droid X upgrade to Android 2.2 leaks out
What we're looking at here is allegedly the leaked over-the-air update to Froyo that Verizon plans on deploying to Droid X customers in the next few weeks, which means two critical things for customers: it should generally be faster all the way around, and -- of course -- you've got support for Flash, which was a big topic of interest at Motorola's launch event for the phone a couple months back. Apple verteilt 10.6.5-Build 10H529 an Entwickler
Innerhalb Wochenfrist hat Apple einen zweiten Entwickler-Build des nächsten Mac OS X Minor-Updates 10.6.5 an die registrierten Entwickler verteilt. Der Build mit der Nummer 10H529 ist knappe 560 MB gross. Bekannte Fehler werden bereits keine mehr gelistet. Die System-Komponenten, welche die Entwickler beim testen besonders aufmerksam beobachten sollen, sind wie bereits beim letzten Build die 3D-Grafik, Mail, Drucken, QuickTime und das X11 Window System. Nicht mehr unter den «Focus Areas» gelistet wird iCal — dafür kam AFP, das Apple Filing Protocol, dazu.

Foxconn will 400.000 neue Mitarbeiter einstellen
Innerhalb eines Jahres will der Elektronikproduzent Foxconn bis zu 400.000 neue Mitarbeiter einstellen. Neue Fabriken sollen näher an den Wohnsiedlungen der Arbeiter gebaut werden. Zuletzt war Foxconn wegen einer Serie von Selbstmorden der Mitarbeiter im Fokus der Oeffentlichkeit.

These shots of a real, live G2 confirm what we'd already suspected from renders: this is basically an Americanized version of the upcoming HTC Vision. What does that mean? Touch Arcade got to speak with none other than John Carmack himself at QuakeCon last weekend, and he had some disappointing news about getting old school id games on the iPhone. While Carmack said that he's excited about releasing Rage on the iPhone, he admits that id's past titles haven't sold up to snuff on the iPhone. That means that Orcs & Elves, originally created for mobile phones and then later released on the DS, won't be coming to Apple's App Store.

Archetype, Hero of Sparta 2 on iPad, PES 2010 coming
A few high profile apps have made their way over to the iPad recently. First up, Archetype is that first-person shooter that ran surprisingly well on the iPhone. It's now available on the bigger device with updated HD graphics and a redesigned HUD to take advantage of the bigger screen space. Inspecting power lines isn't the safest job we can imagine having, so we're pretty happy to see that robots -- which don't have the same feelings we do about getting injured -- can be hacked to do the job. Hydro-Quebec's LineScout can get past most power line obstacles by partially detaching itself from the line and then grabbing a hold of it again once said obstacle has been cleared. Das ist mit Abstand das putzigste Gadgetkonzept, das uns die letzte Zeit untergekommen ist. Pico stammt vom Designer René Woo-Ram Lee und hat auf einem Auge den Beamer und auf dem anderen die Kamera und dazwischen das saftigste Lächeln, das man sich von einer Maschine vorstellen kann. Auch wenn das Design sich danach sehnt mit einer Apple OS ausgestattet zu werden, so ein großes Herz wird Mr. Jobs glauben wir nicht haben, als dass das Ding in Cupertino realisiert würde. Halfbrick Studios really made a splash with their iPhone debut, Fruit Ninja, and now they've followed it up with a little game called Monster Dash. It's a running game in the vein of Canabalt, but rather than dodging skyscraper jumps and bombs, you're fighting through pixelated monsters while sprinting along. The main addition to the game is a "shoot" button, so in addition to jumping obstacles and gaps as they come up, you can mow down enemies with various weapons, such as the (default) flameburster, uzis, and even a machine gun jetpack (that comes in handy when jumping).

Are morning commuters using iPhones to listen to NPR?
Although your car has a fully-capable AM radio, and you're an NPR listener, do you find yourself jacking your iPhone into your car stereo and listening to NPR through its app instead? New data released from NPR seems to indicate that's what a lot of people are opting to do.
According to its data, NPR has noticed a rather significant spike in its iPhone app usage during typical morning commuter time. What makes that data so interesting -- at least to NPR -- is that, presumably, these people are in their cars. They're with radios capable of receiving AM signals and, therefore, NPR's programming over the airwaves.

Das alljährliche iPod-Event im September steht vor der Tür. Nachdem Apple im Juli das iPhone 4 enthüllte, war klar, dass noch im Herbst mit neuen iPod touch zu rechnen ist, in dem wohl ähnliche Hardware zum Einsatz kommt.Wie so oft in der Vergangenheit gibt nun die aktuelle Beta 3 des iOS 4.1 Aufschluss darüber, ob und welche neuen Geräte auf uns zu kommen werden. Olympus DP 20: erstes digitales Diktiergerät für alle, die mit Tapes groß geworden sind

Das ist mal eine Bedienführung, die man sich bei Aufnahmegeräten schon immer gewünscht hat. Olympus setzt mit ihrem Low Budget-Diktiergerät DP-20 genau da an, wo der Walkman damals aufgehört hat. Laut Olympus sei das Gerät auch gerade deshalb für die silberne Generation geeignet, die vielleicht auch mal leichter was vergessen. Das Teil kommt diesen Monat noch für 39,90 Euro. Qualcomm building a $2b Mirasol plant after winning 'major client'?

Those good old market sources are reporting today that Qualcomm has set aside a cool $2 billion to build a new Mirasol display production plant in Taiwan. Hier herrscht seit einiger Zeit Funkstille. Das ist wirklich sehr bedauerlich, hatte jedoch seine Gründe. Die bisherige Redaktion besteht leider aus privaten Gründen nicht mehr. Just a few months after Fujisoft's PALRO was formally introduced to the Japanese education segment, said humanoid is now set to receive a host of new applications as well as become useful as a people tracker. Augmented Reality jetzt auch zum Anfassen

Im Computer Vision Lab der ETH Zürich hat man jetzt ein System entwickelt mit dem man reale Objekte einscannen und diese dann als virtuelle Objekte über das Netz verschicken kann, damit aber nicht genug, denn die Augmented Reality Produkte lassen sich mit einem Sensor auch anfassen und bewegen. Bislang braucht man dafür aber eine spezielle Brille. Augmented Telepräsenz ist das nächste auf der Liste. Das Video auf der Immersence-Seite - die einen guten Einblick in die Zukunftsforschung zu Augmented Reality liefert - ist auf jeden Fall beeindruckend.

Hewlett-Packard steigert Umsatz auf 30,7 Milliarden Dollar
Hewlett-Packard hat im dritten Geschäftsquartal 2010 (bis 31. Juli) 3,1 Milliarden Dollar oder 11,4 Prozent mehr eingenommen als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Das geht aus der gestern Abend veröffentlichten Bilanz hervor. Sony replacing handset cabling with a single copper wire
Sure, it's just boring ol' component news but you can guarantee that this advance will affect the appearance of Sony (and Sony Ericsson) products some time soon. Sony just announced the development of a "single wire interface technology" that replaces the 22 or so cables (used for power, control signals, audio, video, etc) typically found inside mobile devices (tucked away in the hinge or rotating parts) with a single copper wire capable of transmitting data at 940Mbps. Sechs Tage nach dem letzten Build hat Apple eine weitere Entwicklerversion von Mac OS X 10.6.5 zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Buildnummer liegt bei 10H529. iOS 4.1 enthält Hinweise auf drei neue Produkte

Apple liefert Mac Pro aus
Apple hat mit der Auslieferung der neuen Mac-Pro-Modelle begonnen. Kunden, die ihren Rechner am 9. August bestellt haben, berichten zumindest in den USA über eine Versandbestätigung des Apple Stores. Apple bleibt somit im Zeitplan: Am 9. August nahm der Apple Store die ersten Bestellungen entgegen, die Versandzeit sollte bei 7 bis 10 Werktagen liegen.

DashPad brings the Dashboard to the iPad, sort of...
DashPad (US$9.99) takes a unique approach to putting a Dashboard on your iPad. Instead of using an app, (which would never get approved by Apple), or jailbreaking, it uses Safari to serve an iPad specific page that contains eight widgets. More widgets will be coming, according to DashPad's developer Pixlcreations.

Sony's new e-readers pictured, last 25 percent longer on a charge?
We'd heard Sony was wrangling up a bunch of new Readers, and it looks like here they are -- a pair of familiar-looking e-readers with a distinctly different UI. Asus is selling fewer netbooks because of the iPad
At an investor's conference in Taipai this week, Asus CEO Jerry Shen announced reduced sales forcasts for the popular Eee PC line of netbooks. Why? Because people are buying iPads instead.
Digitimes reports that Eee sales fell from 1.6m units in Q1, to 1.5m in Q2, and are now expected to be 1.4m in Q3 . As the third quarter includes the lucrative back-to-school period, those numbers are moving very much the wrong way for Asus. Apple famously sold three million iPads in less than three months despite stock shortages, so whilst Asus is still outselling Apple, that's likely to change soon.

Pro HDR gets an update for iPhone and leaps ahead of the pack
It must be the week for HDR app updates. Yesterday we reviewed a solid update of TrueHDR, and now we have another terrific update from Pro HDR.
Even if you're not into HDR photography, this is one to check out. High Dynamic Range photography creates an image from multiple exposures that are combined to overcome the limitations of automatic exposure control in cameras. The technique can recover details that would be lost in shadows, and keep bright areas, like the sky from blowing out.

Sony phasing out 120GB and 250GB PS3 SKUs, the latter now going for $299 at Fry's
From a supply chain management standpoint, this all makes sense -- why have four separate PS3 SKUs with various HDD sizes when just a pair will do? After announcing last week that a 160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim would be making landfall in the US and Europe, it seems as if Sony has decided to phase out the existing 120GB and 250GB flavors. There's no definitive word on when production on those will stop (we're surmising that the stop order has already been placed), but it looks as if some retailers are already starting up fire sales on the now-old models. Dell's Q2 2010 sees 16 percent increase in net income, flat revenue from Consumer unit
First with HP, and now with Dell. The PC maker (and occasional phone dabbler) posted its second quarter fiscal 2010 report, which actually gives a good perspective on the relative position of each company in the global PC market. New Windows Home Server beta improves Mac support
How many TUAW readers have ever considered running a Windows server at home? I'm guessing not many. I'm hopefully going to convince you that's a shame because they can offer many features not easily (or cheaply!) replicated with Apple's own products.
Engadget reports that a new beta version of Microsoft's Windows Home Server OS boasts considerably enhanced Mac support. Despite being a Unix-turned-Mac guy, I've had one of HP's MediaSmart servers (pictured) in my house for almost a year now, and it's neatly assimilated itself alongside my Macs thanks to HP's secret sauce add-ons. I couldn't be happier with it.
