iPhone 4 launch may be cancelled in New Zealand, confusion reigns down under
Filed under: iPhoneImagine if Apple's handset prices in the US weren't announced at WWDC, and the subsidy pricing was up to AT&T. Imagine if AT&T told potential iPhone customers that the iPhone 4 would launch on July 30, and pricing info would be released well in advance of that.
Now imagine the weeks leading up to July 30 went by, and AT&T didn't say a word about the iPhone 4's pricing, even though many other countries had already released handset and plan info. It's July 29, and instead of working with its customers, throwing them a bone, giving them some sort of information, AT&T instead remained utterly reticent and deleted any posts on its forums remotely crit

Ballmer: killing the iPad is a "job one urgency"
Developing a Windows-based alternative to the iPad is a "job one urgency" at Microsoft, company chief Steve Ballmer said today during the annual Financial Analysts Meeting. He admitted that Microsoft was uncomfortable with how well iPads were selling and was tuning both its software and hardware partnerships to provide a competitive option. Besides altering Windows 7, it's counting on Intel's Oak Trail Atom platform and plans to push hardware makers "as soon as they are ready."

Hitachi shows off new gesture-based interface, touts grand plans
Hitachi's already dipped its toes (or hands, as it were) into the gesture-based waters before, but it looks to have refined things quite a bit for its latest Minority Report-esque demo, which the company is showing off as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. How many trees must die for iWave's Earth-friendly headphones, iPhone cases?
We're not experts or anything, but cutting down trees to manufacture your headphones ($30), ear buds ($20), and iPhone cases ($25) does not really seem all that "green" to us. But what good is selling stuff made from "reusable, environmentally friendly and recyclable materials" if you can't broadcast your sense of social responsibility with "rustic wood grain finishes and smooth earthy tones" that "mirror the true beauty that surrounds us?" New low-end iMac makes major performance leaps
The new low-end iMac -- one of several models released this week -- displays some significant performance boosts over its predecessor, tests show. The latest version switches from a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo CPU to a Core i3 processor of the same clock speed. Google starts location-aware mobile ads for Android, iPhone
Google today started running its first location-sensitive mobile ads. Apps and websites tailored to Android and iOS devices can now use the location features, such as GPS or Wi-Fi triangulation, to trigger ads in a given area. The ads are expandable and expand with a tap to show a map with the location as well as the option of calling or getting directions.

Canadian iPhone 4 launch details emerge: Rogers offers 6GB for $30, iPad sharing for $20
The iPhone 4 may be launching on all the major Canadian carriers tomorrow, but we're only just now starting to get the actual details on what they'll be offering. Rogers is the first out of the gate and, for a change, it looks like folks in the US may just be a tad jealous of their northern neighbors. News: Just Mobile intros UpStand for iPad
Just Mobile has introduced its new UpStand for the Apple iPad. Made from aluminum, the UpStand features a circular base with an angled iPad cradle suspended above by two support poles, non-slip feet, and rubber on the supporting grips to keep the iPad in place while offering protecting for unencased iPads. EVO 4G's Android 2.2 update starts trickling out tomorrow, loads of new features and fixes in store?

Parrot's AR.Drone remote controlled quadricopter has now gone on pre-sale through a special deal Brookstone. Rogers details iPhone upgrade plans, adds iPad plan sharing
Rogers in a last-minute update detailed its upgrade plans for the iPhone 4 and offered a data sharing plan for the iPad. The upgrade discounts are larger than before. Anyone who bought an iPhone between January 2009 and June 7 this year can buy a 16GB iPhone for $399 or a 32GB model for $499. Anyone who bought an iPhone 3G in 2008 and then upgraded to an iPhone 3GS between June 19 and September 15 of last year will pay much less, paying $159 or $269 respectively.

Wir haben schon vor eine Weile über die Probleme von iOS 4 mit dem iPhone 3G berichtet (das stotternde Video noch mal nach dem Break), aber jetzt hat es, wie das Wall Street Journal meldet, wohl auch Apple eingesehen, dass das Update Probleme macht und will reagieren. The electric Think City has been targeting an American release for well over two years now but, like many EVs, those dates just kept on 'a slipping. Proposed iPhone patents would allow 3D space recording
Two Apple patent applications, newly published by the USPTO, could potentially allow for complex 3D interpretations of places iPhone owners have been. One of the documents is titled Generating a Three-Dimensional Model using a Portable Electronic Device Recording, and illustrates how an iPhone's GPS and motion sensors could complement other recording technologies, such as video. Nintendo DS sales crashing in light of iPod
Nintendo on Thursday faced its first loss in two years as its own lineup and competition from Apple hurt its business. The company lost the equivalent of $288.5 million after DS sales were cut in half from 5.97 million a year ago to just 3.15 million this spring. Interesting, impractical iPhone concept lamp

Apparently the above image is just a concept for a flexible iPhone dock that one can easily bend into the form of a lamp. Obviously, the screen is bright enough to give enough light for a small desk area, but is it at all practical? Of course it's not. It should be using the iPhone 4 and its much brighter back-facing LED!

Billed as "the Segway's little sister," this self-balancing electro scooter comes from a small German company called Ewee. The idea behind it is pretty simple: file down all the extraneous bits, keep the stuff that keeps you going, and presumably try to sell it to hardy macho types who like the barebones aesthetic. You accelerate by leaning forward and decelerate by doing the opposite, while steering is handled by a joystick (apparently "driving pleasure is guranteed"). Mossberg stands by early iPhone 4 review
The iPhone 4 is still, "overall, the best device in its class," according to Walt Mossberg. The All Things Digital writer was one of the first people to review the iPhone 4, being one of the few people allowed early access. It was through Mossberg that Apple told the public a software fix was enroute for reception problems, though at the time this referred to improving how iOS displays signal, not solving signal drops caused by a wraparound grip. T-Mobile has beaten AT&T to hold on to its top spot in the quality of its help for customers, JD Power found today. The company had the highest score for its service at 777 points and was the only one of the top four carriers to get a five-star mark from subscribers. Some Windows CE-based ATMs especially generous (and vulnerable to hackers)
Speaking at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, a fellow named Barnaby Jack (really!) used custom software to hack Windows CE-based ATMs on stage. After using an industry standard key to gain entry to the machines (apparently many ATM owners are too lazy to install new locks on their machines) Jack was able to load a rootkit on the device using a USB thumb drive. ClearCam goes legit, will increase image resolution at a price
Filed under: iPhoneClearCam has been around for a while, and I first took a look at it more than a year ago. It was a clever app that had two modes. One mode took a series of four pictures in rapid succession, and then it saved the best and sharpest one in your photo library; the other mode took six images together and stacked them in order to increase resolution and reduce noise. Sprint prepping iPod touch case with Wi-Fi hotspot?
An FCC filing discovered late Wednesday has signaled a unique Sprint plan to capture Apple device users. A ZTE device known as the Peel would serve as an iPod touch case but would hold a full 3G-to-Wi-Fi mobile hotspot in its back. Fujitsu und Toshiba besiegeln Zusammenlegung ihres Mobilfunkgeschäfts
Fujitsu und Toshiba haben wie erwartet und vor kurzem vereinbart einen Vertrag über die Auslagerung ihrer Handysparten in ein gemeinsames Joint Venture unterzeichnet. Die neue Firma soll zum 1. HTC bringt Update für Legend
Seit gestern Abend steht das Update 2.05.405.2 für das HTC Legend zur Verfügung. Modelle, die von Mobilfunkprovider vertrieben werden, sollen später die Aktualisierung erhalten. Der 24 MByte große Patch wird über eine drahtlose Datenverbindung per WLAN oder UMTS auf das Gerät übertragen. Er soll für stabilerer Datenverbindungen sorgen und das Problem des fehlenden Klingeltons bei eingehenden Anrufen beheben.

Das erste Modu mit Android kommt

Wir haben zwar nur einen Prototypen gesehen, aber immerhin. Modu scheint auch auf Android umzustellen, und damit wird wohl auch endgültig die Ära der Mini-Android Halbsmart-Phones beginnen. Hier verzichten wir z.B. auf 3G komplett, vielleicht auch nur weil es ein Prototyp ist, aber da das Modu ja generell als Zusatz gedacht ist, als modulares Handy, ist das durchaus vorstellbar. Erste Eindrücke wie Android auf einem so kleinen Handy läuft gibt es im Video nach dem Klick.

A look inside the Magic Trackpad

Inside there is, well, not a whole heck of a lot. A large spacer prevents the user from pressing down hard enough to damage the small logic board. That board is connected to the trackpad itself via two "ridiculously thin" ribbon cables, which are glued into place. They used a hot air gun to soften the adhesive. Japan demands Apple response to iPod nano fires
Japan's industry ministry is now demanding that Apple report on how it will deal with iPod nanos overheating, says Agence France-Presse. 2005-era Nanos have caused at least 27 incidents, according to a ministry official, including six fires. BlackBerry Bold 9780 caught on video running OS 6
This new Bold 9780 is really looking like the real deal, isn't it? The phone, which includes some ultra-minor aesthetic tweaks over the 9700, along with 512MB of RAM to handle the new BlackBerry 6 OS, has been described on paper, caught on camera, and now has gotten the requisite video walkthrough. E-book sales will overtake the paperback format within the next year, Amazon's Senior VP Steve Kessel said today following the launch of the new Kindle. Having just overtaken hardcovers, Kindle book sales should outrun paperbacks before the end of 2011. Joseph Malley hat einige der größten US-Medienkonzerne vor dem Bezirksgericht in San Francisco wegen einem Verstoß gegen Bundesgesetze verklagt. Sicherheitsforscher erklären Scheckbetrug mit Botnetz-Unterstützung
SecureWorks hat auf der Sicherheitskonferenz Black Hat öffentlich gemacht, wie russische Kriminelle mit Hilfe von Botnetzen, VPNs und Geldwäsche durch unbeteiligte "Money Mules" in den USA Scheckbetrug begehen. Der Sicherheitsspezialist untersucht die Vorgänge seit drei Monaten und arbeitet derzeit mit Strafverfolgern zusammen, um die Verantwortlichen zu fassen. [iPad-App] Flipboard
Für großes Aufsehen sorgte in der letzten Woche die iPad-Anwendung ‘Flipboard‘. Perfekt abgestimmt, spülten die vorbereiteten Artikel einiger Internet-Mammuts, angeführt von All Things Digital und Robert Scoble die Lesergemeinde wie eine Viehherde zum App-Store-Trog. Nicht verwunderlich, dass die kostenfreie Medientankstelle innerhalb der ersten Stunden komplett austrocknete. Die Einwahl über das eigene Facebook- und Twitter-Profil verzögerte sich und ließ nach einem schnell durchgewunkenen Update erst peu à peu die Nutzer ins Netzwerk. Mein Zugang zur “revolutionary social app” folgte am gestrigen Mittwoch.

Apple's Magic Trackpad gets the iFixit teardown treatment, nothing terribly magical found
Well, we knew it wouldn't take very long, and it didn't: iFixit's gotten its hands on Apple's Magic Trackpad and ripped it to shreds. This is one operation they're not shy about calling delicate, folks -- this thing is seriously thin and its components packed in quite lovingly. So what's going on in there? Well, besides the magical dust, they found a Broadcom BCM2042 chip, which is the same one the Magic Mouse uses for Bluetooth connectivity, and a Broadcom BCM5974 touchscreen controller chip, which also powers the iPhone and iPod touch. Motorola's phone sales drop, give Apple US crown once again
Motorola today posted results that underscored its urgent move to smartphones. The company's total phone shipments in the spring quarter shrank compared to the winter, falling from 8.5 million to 8.3 million, but its smartphone numbers grew quickly. Intel Sugar Bay desktop platform may launch at CES 2011
Intel's platform for its Sandy Bridge desktop processors, Sugar Bay, should launch right at the start of the new year if sources are accurate. AMD verkauft mehr Grafikchips als Nvidia
Zum ersten Mal hat AMD im 2. Quartal 2010 mehr Grafikchips verkaufen können als Nvidia, AMD hatte in diesem Zeitraum einen Anteil von 24,5% am Gesamtmarkt. Nvidia hingegen lag nur bei knapp 20%. Im ersten Quartal dieses Jahres lag Nvidia noch bei knapp 30% und AMD bei unter 20. Den ersten Platz beim Marktanteil belegt immer noch Intel mit gut 54%. Motorola manages $162 million Q2 profit, turns that frown upside down

Find the headline confusing? Well, the explanation won't help to assuage the muddle much. A Nintendo spokesman told Bloomberg Japan that Ninty plans to announce the Nintendo 3DS price and release date on September 29th. Thus far, we've only seen speculation about pricing (between $249 and $299) and release dates (between October and March, 2011). Der Kopierschutz kostenpflichtiger Apps liegt Entwicklern natürlich am Herzen, im Moment ist die Situation aus ihrer Sicht alles anderes als befriedigend. Das soll sich laut Eric Chu von Google jetzt ändern, "Raubkopien" schon bald der Vergangenheit angehören. Beim Starten einer App soll automatisch ein spezieller Google-Server angefunkt werden, um zu überprüfen, ob Anwender und Käufer denn auch ein und die selbe Person sind. Ob das Konsequenzen für die Verwendung des Programms im Offline-Modus hat, ist nicht bekannt, aber unwahrscheinlich, so blöd ist man nicht mal in Mountain View, die Entwickler schon mal gar nicht.

Nokia's Symbian^3 flagship -- the 3.5-inch N8 with 12 megapixel camera -- just went up for preorder on Espoo's Italian storefront showing an end of September availabilty. Amazon unveils third-gen Kindle, adds $139 Wi-Fi only model
Amazon in a rare evening launch revealed its third-generation Kindle reader. The new hardware is 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than the model it replaces but is better in nearly every way. Bell may have 6GB of data for $30, iPad sharing option
Bell could land a victory against other Canadian carriers by offering a strong promo deal for smartphones and the iPad, a leaked memo shows. Similar to the deals Rogers has been running since 2008, the carrier would provide 6GB of data for $30 per month for BlackBerries, iPhones and other smartphones, including tethering. The deal identified by BGR would start July 30 -- the same day the iPhone 4 is available in Canada -- and would run until September 30, the end of the summer quarter.
