Sansa Fuze+ leaks out with slotRadio support, 24 hours of battery life
And here we thought SanDisk had up and buried its once-thriving Sansa PMP line. After all -- it was this company's CEO that said "you can't out-iPod the iPod." For whatever reason, it looks as if the memory mainstay is about to try its hand once more in the saturated media player market, with a Sansa Fuze+ rumored for release in the near term. Briefly: iHome+Radio Internet radio, Elements text editor
iHome has launched a new Internet radio app for the iPhone and iPod touch, iHome+Radio. The title takes advantage of iOS 4 by supporting background audio, and playback control from the task switcher. Through RadioTime users have access to thousands of stations, covering music, talk, sports, and news content around the world. Streaming is currently supported in MP3 or AAC format; expanded support is under development.

TrueHDR for iPhone updated for Retina Display and iPhone 4 camera
HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography isn't for everyone, but it can really help when taking pictures with extreme shadow or light. HDR images basically combine two or more pictures taken at different exposures. Using a process called tone mapping, you get a new image that displays more detail in the darker areas and restrains the areas that are too bright.
TrueHDR for the iPhone has been updated to support the full resolution of the iPhone cameras, both front and back. It now supports the Retina Display, and claims better image alignment and more natural looking results.

Verizon's remaining 2010 roadmap to be an Android-fest of phones and tablets?

Google TV gets push back from studios
Google is getting significant resistance from TV networks for its Google TV strategy, insiders said Wednesday. It has reportedly talked with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC about scraping video site data and TV-ready reformatting but has so far been turned down, the WSJ wrote. Studios are allegedly worried that the info, which would help mix TV and web results, could lure customers away from more profitable traditional TV or put pirated material ahead of legitimate content.

News: Nintendo NES games return to App Store
A number of Nintendo NES game titles have once again returned to the App Store, in apparent violation of Nintendo copyrights. Vevo rolls out music video app for iPhone
Video website Vevo has launched a dedicated iPhone app. Users can more easily stream the service's music videos, mostly by mainstream, heavily-marketed acts like Eminem, Lady Gaga and Kanye West. A selection of videos by lesser-known artists like Sarah Harmer is also available, and in fact one browsing option concentrates explicitly on new artists.

Snoop iPhone data with limitations
The iPhone Spy Stick can be used to snoop information that is stored on a user's iPhone (even deleted data), within limitations. The ill-intentioned will want to keep reading.
The way that it works sounds simple (we haven't played with one yet). Just connect the stick and the target iPhone to a computer and run the included software, which pulls all sorts of data from the phone. You'll find deleted texts, calendar events, photos, and contact information. It'll also find recent map searches, locations tracked via GPS, Web history, and voice memos.

Verizon testing a $99 unlimited plan that simply matches Sprint's famous offering
Carriers test the waters on new plans all the time, but this new one from Verizon seems -- at least at cursory glance -- squarely aimed at its CDMA competitor. According to research from Current Analysis, the nation's top carrier is trying out an unlimited Nationwide Talk & Text plan for $69.99 in San Diego and Los Angeles retail outlets. Foxconn hiring 400,000 new workers, locating closer to home
Taiwanese contractor Foxconn said today it would hire 400,000 workers at new plants in China. The plants will be built closer to the new employees' homes, as the company tries to increase worker happiness after a recent number of suicides. The company's revenue has increased by 50 percent and will help afford the new workforce, which will number between 1.2 and 1.3 million.

Apple apps director reacts to hypocrisy allegations
Apple's director of applications technology, Phillip Shoemaker, has partly withdrawn from social networks following a Wired story accusing of him hypocrisy. A Twitter account has been completely removed, and a LinkedIn profile has been edited; each at one point referenced Shoemaker as the owner of GrayNoodle, a company selling iPhone apps. Some app aggregation sites have also pointed to Shoemaker as the company's owner.

But with all the ongoing hoopla surrounding the App Store approval process, we'd be remiss if we didn't hep you to recently reported news that Phillip Shoemaker, director of applications technology at Apple, seems to have a healthy sideline developing iOS software with names like iWiz and, ahem, Animal Farts. Dell Streak teardown shows accessibility, iPhone-like cams
Well-known repair shop iFixit today posted a teardown of the Dell Streak. The Android tablet is put somewhat in contrast with Apple as it's considered relatively accessible. The back cover for the battery and microSDHC slot comes off easily, and the construction is such that both taking apart and reassembling the Streak is easy.

Last April -- as is their recent tradition -- ThinkGeek put on its show of April Fool's Day items. Most of these fake items are of the "OMG I need to have that!" variety, like the Tauntaun sleeping bag from a past year. Apple verbannt Musikplayer-App Grooveshark aus dem App Store
Nur zehn Tage hat sich die App der Firma Grooveshark in Apples App-Store halten können. Nun wurde der Musik-Player, der gezielt kostenlose Inhalte veröffentlicht, gelöscht.
Verantwortlich dafür ist Apple selbst. Grooveshark meldet in seinem Firmenblog, dass sich laut Apple die britische Tochter der Plattenfirma Universal über die Software beschwert hatte. Grooveshark ist eigentlich als Internet-Radiodienst bekannt.

Verizon will stream live FiOS TV, video on-demand to iPads, other mobile devices soon
Despite whatever other tablets Verizon may have on the way, it showed off a new trick for FiOS TV at a press conference today by streaming live TV and video on-demand to the iPad. NewTeeVee grabbed the above picture of the app, which Chief Information Officer Shaygha Kheradpir says brings the same software from its set-top boxes to the iPad and other screens. Verizon FiOS TV for iPad fuels talk of Apple deals
Verizon provided a surprise to subscribers by previewing an iPad app for FiOS TV. The initial app will provide live, streaming TV to existing FiOS TV subscribers using the same technology that underpins the fiber optic network's set-top hardware. Dell Streak gets ripped to shreds by iFixit, Blondie reportedly satisfied at last
Our friends at iFixit have made short work of the Dell Streak, doing what they do best. They've torn apart everyone's favorite giant mobile phone (or is it a tiny tablet?), and found some interesting innards in the process. iFixit reports that the Streak is extremely easy to dissasemble, and inside they found a Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon CPU, and cameras which they report are "similar" to those found inside the iPhone 4. There's nothing earth-shattering here, though iFixit's taken the Dell Streak teardown as an opportunity to debut a new "fixability"

We can't say Digitimes is overflowing with details on Toshiba's long rumored Android tablet, but it looks like we should be marking our planners for a September or October release. As we've heard before the 10-inch tablet will run some version of Android and will be powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. The early fall timing surely does make sense to us considering we just heard from NVIDIA this week that many of its partners are planning to release Tegra 2 devices in that time frame. TUAW TV Live this afternoon -- The Steve and Tim tag team show
Long-time viewers of TUAW TV Live will remember that we had OWC Radio and MyMac.com Podcast host Tim Robertson on the show a while back, and it was a blast. That's Tim in the photo at right, doing his best to imitate a fish out of water. Tim and I tend to riff off of each other pretty well, so it was a fun and fast hour of TUAW TV Live.
Well, we were talking (which we both love to do) a few weeks ago, and I decided that it's time to liven things up with another dose of Tim. Apple hiring for pan-EU iTunes deals
Apple has posted a listing for an iTunes Pan-EU Label Relations head that would help the company meet its agreement with the European Commission to have Europe-wide music licensing. The official would help manage deals with labels in "key European markets," among them Scandinavian countries and Spain. No direct clues were given as to when the deals would take effect.

WSJ: iAds not starting off so well
The Wall Street Journal is reporting this week that the iAds launch is off to a bumpy start as advertisers learn to deal with Apple's tight-fisted control.
As Gruber said, "Better get used to it."

Pegatron distances itself from kickback investigation
Implication in a kickback scandal should not hurt Pegatron's OEM deals with Apple, the Taiwanese manufacturer suggests. The subsidiary named in the case, Kaedar Electronics, was only acquired in 2008 -- after alleged crimes -- and is not involved in its parent's supply chain for iPod and iPhone products, according to Pegatron. New iPad TV ad highlights various apps
A new iPad TV ad started airing in the US this week. It begins with the statement "IPad is" before moving through several adjectives and related apps. For example, a brief appearance by The Photo Cookbook is followed by "delicious." Flipboard is followed by "current," and so on.
One interesting tidbit is that when Twitter is shown (followed by "friendly"), the ad shows a close crop of twitter.com. Presumably this is because there's still no official Twitter app for the iPad ("Twitter," formerly Tweetie, is for the iPhone and not a universal app).
It's a clever spot that shows off some quality apps while answering the common question,

SanDisk chip-sized SSD could lead to fast tablets, netbooks
SanDisk today unveiled an entirely new class of solid-state drive that could lead to much faster portable devices. iSSD fits the entire flash memory and controller into a single, small chip but with much more speed than usual NAND flash. KT's servers were overwhelmed with pre-orders for the September South Korean iPhone 4 launch, officials said Wednesday. Yahoo has deployed a new web interface for its Mail service, custom-tailored to the iPad. The page is based on the same HTML5 front-end developed for the iPhone, but with a reorganized layout better suited to a larger screen. First of all, the ad campaign is over, so the guy can do whatever he wants with his iPhone; second, per the theories floated over in the Engadget comments section, chances are the jailbreak was done at the behest of Jimmy Kimmel Live producers so that they could get TV out from the phone and put it up on the big display.

Millenial: Android, iPad use soaring in July
Both Apple and Google saw surges in use last month but in very different ways, Millenial Media discovered in its latest study. SEC: over a quarter of shareholders want Dell CEO out

Gamescom: 160 GB PS3 Slim und 320 GB Move Bundle kommen im Herbst nach Europa

Evolution Defense is a pretty good tower defense title. While it doesn't add a whole lot to the genre (there is some innovation in terms of how towers are upgraded, and support towers can be built and added in around damaged towers), it is a smooth and direct TD game that's made for the iPhone.
Your job is to attack pathogens that are invading a bloodstream, and as with the usual tower defense spiel, you need to build up towers along the pathway (according to the currency that you have). It's pretty basic stuff, but a solid amount of tower choices and some excellent (if a little strange) graphical representations make for a quality game.

Android-Trojaner sammelt GPS-Daten
Das kostenlose Spiel "Tap Snake" - ein Klon des klassischen "Snake"-Spiels - ist laut Symantec ein seltsamer Grenzfall eines Trojaners. Weil "Tap Snake" auf Android-Telefonen im Hintergrund GPS-Daten über den Aufenthaltsort des Smartphones verschickt, wurde es laut einem Blog-Beitrag als Trojaner AndroidOS.Tapsnake eingestuft und den Virensignaturen der hauseigenen Scanner hinzugefügt. Obwohl die Applikation selbst relativ harmlos ist, sehen die Spezialisten in ihr einen Vorboten weiterer Android-Schadsoftware.

Vimeo stellt universellen Video-Player vor
Bereits seit Anfang des Jahres steht für Besucher des Video-Portals Vimeo auch ein Video-Player auf Basis von HTML5 zur Verfügung. Allerdings konnte dieser bisher nur exklusiv auf der Vimeo-Seite genutzt werden. Wollte man das Video auf einer anderen Webseite über die Embed-Funktion betrachten, war dafür bisher in jedem Fall das Flash-Plugin notwendig. Besonders iPhone- und iPad-Nutzer wurden damit von der Videowiedergabe ausgeschlossen.

Pegatron suspendiert Manager, zieht Konsequenzen aus Bestechungsvorwürfen
Nach den Vorwürfen der Bestechung gegen Paul Devine zieht der chinesische Gerätebauer Pegatron seine Konsequenzen: Ein leitender Manager von Kaedar Electronics, einer von Pegatron gekauften Firma, wurde vom Dienst suspendiert.
Die Suspendierung wurde angeordnet, nachdem einer von Apples Zuliefer-Managern von Apple beschuldigt wurde, u.a. von Pegatron Zahlung für die Beschaffung vertraulicher Informationen erhalten zu haben.

Bei der Hintergrundbeleuchtung von Flüssigkristallbildschirmen geht der Trend klar in Richtung der LED-Technologie. WebKit neu mit MathML
Bereits über ein Jahr wurde nun daran gearbeitet — nun ist die Implementierung fertig und ab sofort in allen WebKit-Builds/-Nightlies per Standard aktiviert: MathML. Im speziellen die WebKit-Team-Mitglieder Alex Milowski und François Sausset haben die Entwicklung vorangetrieben und die MathML-Implementierung ermöglicht.
MathML steht für «Mathematical Markup Language» und ist eine vom W3C abgesegnete Auszeichnungssprache für mathematische Formeln. MathML ist eine XML-Applikation die mathematische Notationen erlaubt und diese swohl in ihrer Struktur als auch deren Inhalt anzeigen kann. Das Ziel von MathML ist es, mathematische Formeln im World Wide Web auszugeben, wie es HTML für Text macht. An den MathML-Spezifikationen wird seit 1998 gearbeitet — seit 2003 liegt die aktuelle 2.0-Spezifikation vor.

HBO heading to iPad and mobile devices 'in six months,' still cold on Netflix

There is something to HBO Co-President Eric Kessler's words that ring true with his company's goals, and unfortunately for Netflix enthusiasts, that subscription service isn't part and parcel with his philosophy. No criminal charges in Pennsylvania MacBook spying probe
The Associated Press is reporting that a federal investigation into the possible misuse of webcams on Apple laptops did not find criminal intent.
The investigation was at a suburban Philadelphia school district that used special software that wound up covertly snapping images of students who were at home with their school provided MacBooks.
The FBI opened the investigation to see if there were violations of federal wiretap statutes or privacy invasions. The school has said the security software had been purchased to track laptops that had been reported stolen, but one student, Blake Robbins, claimed he had been photographed more than 400 times during

Why Microsoftís PC versus Mac page falls apart
(Editorial) Iím all for companies taking aim at others. In fact, I think itís a smart move in many cases, since it gives firms the ability to highlight, on their own turf, exactly why they believe their products are better than any others. Finder alternative Raskin 1.0.2 gains in speed, stability
Raskin Software has launched an update to its alternative Finder application for the Mac, Raskin 1.0.2. The software uses a pan and zoom system for portraying the Mac desktop and filing system, displaying teaser images of files as quick visual aids to finding needed images. HOB offers MacGate for remotely accessing Mac desktops
HOB has launched a remote desktop application for the Mac, HOB MacGate. The software provides access to a Mac desktop over a LAN or the Internet and allows users to view a Mac desktop on a PC, allowing technicians to work on the Mac from a PC, Linux or Mac, but also allowing a user to work simultaneously on both a Mac and PC from one seat. Found Footage: Sony attacks iPhone gaming in new PSP ad
Well, when you get big enough, there's a target painted on your back. Sony has gone after the iPhone and the App Store in a new ad for their PSP gaming system. NASA challenge searches for a solar-powered 'Night Rover'
NASA regularly opens up challenges to foster development of new and exciting space technology, and it looks like it's come up with a particularly challenging one recently -- it's asking interested parties to develop a solar-powered "Night Rover" that can store up enough energy during the day to continue to work throughout the night. PA school avoids federal charges in MacBook spying case
A Philadelphia school district has avoided charges from federal prosecutors following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the MacBook spying case. US Attorney David Memeger claims investigators could not find any evidence of criminal intent by school employees.

Kindle, iPad, and paper examined microscopically
The above image is a picture of the iPad's screen, multiplied by 24 times over. Keith Peters at Bit-101 used his new USB microscope to examine a few different e-reader displays up really close, and the results are definitely a fun read. The iPad doesn't do too well, actually -- I think the Kindle looks much cleaner, although there's some debate about that in the comments, so each to his own. At any rate, it's cool to see how these displays "work" -- the actual pixels going into the picture that our eyes just collate into full text. iPad may be saving Amazon's Kindle business model
The launch of the iPad may have ironically helped Amazon improve the business model for the Kindle, Needham analyst Charlie Wolf found today. Amazon had previously insisted on a wholesale model that sold e-books at a loss but made a profit on the Kindle readers, but Apple's insistence on agency model pricing for the iBookstore may have done the online retailer a favor. By creating pressure on Amazon to switch its own deals at the risk of losing publishers, Apple has now forced Amazon to turn an estimated 30 percent profit on each book it sells, Wolf said.

Power your iPad from underpowered USB ports
The new iXP1-500 Dongle claims to eliminate the "Not charging" issue that some iPad owners experience when connecting to older machines. We haven't tested one, but our initial instinct is dubious at best.
Shortly after the iPad was released in the US, users noticed a "charging issue." Specifically, the iPad would report "Not charging" when connected to an older MacBook Pro, Macbook, iMac or non-Apple machine. We later confirmed that the iPad actually does charge in that scenario, just very slowly.

Shopkick app gives iPhone owners rewards for visiting shops
Bay Area startup shopkick today launched its self-titled iPhone app (free, App Store) in a bid to upstage Foursquare and other location check-in rivals. The service uses GPS to detect when it's within range of a given store and will automatically send a "signal" to a device in the store itself to let it know when the user is close. Shoppers then get credits, or kickbucks, for visiting the store that they can ultimately roll into actual discounts, even if they haven't necessarily bought items during the earlier trips.

Vimeo now on iPad, iPhone
Popular video site Vimeo (think a more artsy YouTube) has changed its code to be completely HTML5 compatible, which means you can now browse the site completely on the iPhone or the iPad. I just pulled the site up on my iPhone, and I have to say, I think it's a smoother browsing experience than the browser itself -- you just get a list of videos, and clicking on whichever one you want (like, for example, the great Dennis Liu music video above) opens it right up in Quicktime. Good deal. Vimeo's been flirting with HTML5 for the better part of this year, but this switchover means everything (including embeds when seen from an iPhone or iPad) is in HTML5 from the start -- bye bye Flash.

Snow Leopard graphics update addresses frame rate issues
Apple has released a graphics update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The download brings stability and performance improvement for a variety of applications and games. Frame rate issues have been addressed in Portal and Team Fortress 2 on certain Macs, while a crash bug has been fixed in Aperture 3 and StarCraft II.
