In Brief: Woz' Big Bang Theory episode airs September 30th
I'm looking forward to the Big Bang Theory episode with Steve Wozniak, both because I'm a fan of the show, and because who doesn't love the Woz? A post on the CBS forums says that the episode with the Apple co-founder is coming up on September 30th, just the second episode of the show's new season.
There's no information yet on why Woz will appear with the nerds on the show, but the plot of the episode apparently has wacky physicist Sheldon Cooper trying to put his brain into the body of a robot in an effort to stay immortal. As you can see in the picture to the right, he either succeeds or (more likely) has a sitcom fantasy about succeeding, so maybe Woz will appear in a dream sequence.

Hotmail gains ActiveSync support for iOS, other platforms
Microsoft has begun enabling Exchange ActiveSync support for Hotmail users, reports say. The technology should allow push synchronization with a number of mobile devices, most notably the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Also supported are Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile 6.x devices, as well as Nokia E-, S- and N-series phones.

Roku cuts player prices ahead of Apple iTV, adds 1080p
Roku today hedged itself against Apple's media event by cutting prices for its Internet Player across the board. The prices drop $20 to $30, putting the Roku SD as low as $60 while the Roku HD costs $70 and the HD-XR is now just $100. The SD may be in clearance pricing since it's listed as "out of stock" through Roku itself.

IceClean does system maintenance and optimization for your Mac for free
There are a raft of utilities that provide a front end for the built-in Unix system tasks. Some are free, some cost a little bit, either through a purchase or shareware fee. Cocktail is a great example of a paid app that is very complete but it's not free. OnyX is a good free app with similar capabilities.

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned

StreetSpace lawsuit targets Apple, others over ads
Apple and newly-absorbed subsidiary Quattro Wireless are just two of several targets in a new lawsuit from Malaysian company StreetSpace, says AppleInsider. The firm is responsible for the Web Station, a web-browsing kiosk supported in part through targeted advertising. The defendants are accused of violating US Patent 6,847,969, Method and System for Providing Personalized Online Services and Advertisements in Public Spaces.

Marketcircle releases Billings Pro
After some teasing and a closed beta, Marketcircle has finally released Billings Pro 1.0. As the big brother to Billings, the pro version offers multi-user support for small businesses.
I've used Billings and Billings Touch for years, and love them dearly. Of course, I'm a "business of one," so I don't need multi-user support. Many do, however, and Marketcircle intends to bring the great Billings experience to them. Additionally, they're going for ubiquitous access from the Mac, iPhone and the web.

New fiber optic cables promise to bring better, cheaper internet access to West Africa
Last summer, the lone undersea cable linking West Africa to the rest of the world was damaged, forcing Nigeria to fall back on slower and expensive satellite connections, and knocking several other countries completely offline until the cable was repaired. While that has been a relatively common occurrence to date, the chances of it happening again in the future are now considerably less likely. Xperia X10 family's Android 2.1 upgrade coming by end of September, says Sony Ericsson UK
When we talked to Sony Ericsson for the Xperia X10 for AT&T review, reps informed us that the phone is upgradeable but no further information could be provided. BlackBerry Bold 9780 spotted in the wild yet again, this time in white
It's still not official, but the BlackBerry Bold 9780 hasn't exactly been making itself shy over the past couple of months, having turned up in the wild, on video, and now in the wild yet again in a white version. Arcade Fire debuts HTML5-based music video
Google on Monday partnered with the Canadian indie rock music band Arcade Fire to produce the first HTML5-based music video. The project, called The Wilderness Downtown, was overseen by writer and director Chris Milk. It's set to the band's "We Used to Wait" song and uses the standard to show Google Maps, a drawing tool and multiple windows that move around the screen.

Verizon has launched a new DSL tier that gives subscribers 10Mbps to 15Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream. The new internet service is priced at $60 per month, while customers who also have a voice plan with Verizon will receive a discounted price of $50 per month. Motorola XT300 mini portrait slider leaks out in clearer photos
We've been wondering about this oddly intriguing mini Motorola portrait slider since we saw it back in July, and a new set of leaked photos today hasn't done anything to diminish our curiosity, since that keyboard looks pretty amazing. The reappearance of the red Droid eye seems to indicate this one's eventually destined for Verizon, but we'll see -- we're curious about the XT300 name being used in this photo set, which ties in with Moto's GSM naming scheme, and Verizon's reserved the Droid name for higher-end sets so far, while this thing looks like a mid-range Blur phone to us. Rumor: Next generation iPod nano will be super tiny
Add this to the rumor mix - AppleInsider reports that the next generation of iPod nano will be a minuscule version of the current generation. For proof, they point to a couple of third-party case makers, including this one from Orient King, pictured at right.
The case shows a 30-pin dock connector and cutouts to accommodate four buttons or ports -- most likely for a headphone jack, hold switch and volume buttons similar to the iPhone.

Samsung ships 1 million Galaxy US phones in US over 45 days
Samsung started the week by confirming that it had shipped one million Galaxy S phones in the US. The tally includes the combined numbers for AT&T's Captivate and T-Mobile's Vibrant and took 45 days to reach. It doesn't yet include the Epic 4G, which reaches Sprint tomorrow, or the Fascinate, which reaches US Cellular and Verizon sometime in the fall.

China Unicom offering in-store jailbreaking
Chinese customers who want a jailbroken iPhone but lack the nerve or time to do it now have a reliable option, as distributor China Unicom (CU) is offering jailbreaking as a service in their retail stores.
Chinese language site WeiPhone notes (here's the English translation) that customers can have their iPhones jailbroken by the store's staff, who will also trim SIM cards to fit the iPhone 4's micro-SIM tray. Additionally, some are even advertising that they'll install apps for their customers after the jailbreak is complete.

Clearwire's Rover service goes live, offers $5/day 4G service
Looks like the prepaid wireless data market is starting to heat up: Clearwire just launched its Rover service, which offers 4G wireless data for as little as $5 a day -- with two free days included when you first sign up. That's not bad if you just need a quick hit here or there, although you need to pony up $150 for that Rover Puck WiFi hotspot we saw at the FCC last month or $100 for a USB stick, and anything more than a day quickly becomes less of a deal at $20/week and $50/month. News: Intel buys iPhone chip unit from Infineon
Intel has entered into an agreement to purchase the wireless unit of Infineon Technologies for approximately $1.4 billion in cash. Plex/Nine, Plex for iOS near release
New versions of the Plex media player are en route for Mac and iOS devices, the developers have revealed. The updated Mac app is being dubbed Plex/Nine, and should be launched at midnight Eastern time. The major addition is a separate Media Manager for Snow Leopard, which should make it easier to populate Plex with content. It scans selected folders, and automatically assigns names, art and metadata to files using online databases.

My Living Desktop's scene store brings more life to your Mac
On Friday, we had a short piece about some half-off deals on Bodega, the "app store" for OS X. One of the applications that was receiving the discount deal was a popular desktop program from Amuse, Inc. called My Living Desktop (US$34.95).
If you've never seen My Living Desktop in action, it's pretty amazing. Right now, I have a beautiful sunset scene taken at a swimming pool over looking the ocean filling my view on the 27" iMac screen. The clouds are moving, there's the constant sound of running water in the pool and the far-off crashing of the waves, and occasionally you'll hear a seagull. This, and the other scenes that are included with My Living Desktop, are very relaxing

Die Kollegen von Mobile Geek haben sich um Nokias C6-01 gekümmert. Das Smartphone für den kleinen Geldbeutel war neulich schon auf der Website von Nokia Holland aufgetaucht, dann aber schnell wieder verschwunden. Clearwire starts up Rover prepaid 4G, intros Puck hotspot
Clearwire today kickstarted prepaid data today by launching a new service, Rover, and launching a new hotspot to match. The approach is based solely on time rather than data and gives unlimited WiMAX within a given period: users can pay as little as $5 for a single day, $20 for a week or $50 for a whole month. Rover is built with a younger audience in mind and can be activated or extended with Re-Up prepaid cards rather than having to use a credit card.

Xbox Live Gold price increasing November 1 in US, UK, Canada, and Mexico
Well, this is sad and unexpected: Microsoft's Major Nelson just announced that Xbox Live Gold will be getting more expensive in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico starting November 1. A single month will go from $7.99 to $9.99, three months will go from $19.99 to $24.99, and the yearly sub will now be $59.99, up from $49.99. Yes, it's super lame, but to make up for it Microsoft's offering a discounted $40 one-year Gold sub starting November 1 -- a nice deal if your subscription is set to expire around then, we suppose. RIM averts BlackBerry ban in India... for now
It was facing an August 31st deadline before India banned BlackBerry service in the country, but it looks like RIM has now managed to avoid that scenario -- at least for a little while. According to India's Ministry of Home Affairs, "RIM have made certain proposals for lawful access by law enforcement agencies and these would be operationalized immediately," and that "the feasibility of the solutions offered would be assessed thereafter." Details are still a bit light beyond that, but India's assessment will apparently come after 60 days, and there's still no guarantee that we won't end up back at square one at that point. OmniVision readies 720p sensor, processor for mobile
OmniVision today put out a rare camera sensor and processor combo tailored just to video. The OV9740's CMOS sensor has a 720p maximum resolution but processes the entire photo or video on the chip itself, simplifying the work needed with the final shot. The design is also very sensitive to low light and thin at just 3.2mm (0.13in).

The App Store: 250,000 apps and growing
Apple set another milestone over the weekend when it reached 250,000 apps available in the App Store. Last Saturday, 148Apps recorded 252,227 apps currently available for the iPad and iPhone/iPod touch. Expect Steve Jobs to tout these numbers on Wednesday at the beginning of Apple's scheduled press event.
As Electronista reports, Apple still has the numbers when it comes to mobile app stores. Unofficial statistics suggests that there are over 100,000 apps available in the Android Store, and far fewer -- around 9,000 -- in RIM's BlackBerry App World.

LG E720 with Android leaks: it's no Galaxy S killer
The great thing about Android is that it does a reasonably good job scaling from the high end of the hardware spectrum all the way down to the lowest of the low -- and it's on that cautionary note that we show you this alleged LG E720 that popped up on a Polish site over the weekend. We're apparently looking at a Froyo-equipped device featuring a 3.2 inch display -- which we're fairly certain will fall short of WVGA resolution -- along with Qualcomm's midrange MSM7227 core and a 5 megapixel camera around back. When developing an unmanned vehicle there are two paths to choose from: create an entirely fresh design with no room for a carbon-based pilot, or simply take an existing craft and make it self-sufficient. Apple still struggling with iPhone proximity sensor fix
Apple has yet to find a fix for flaws with the iPhone 4's proximity sensor, according to one of the company's Australian spokespeople, Fiona Martin. Normally the sensor detects when an iPhone is next to a person's face, and shuts off the touchscreen to prevent people from accidentally tapping onscreen buttons. In some cases the sensor is failing, potentially leading to interrupted calls.

Korea's KT guns after iPad, Galaxy Tab with Identity Tab
Korean cell carrier KT today upended the tablet market in its home country by launching its own model both ahead of Apple and Samsung. The Identity Tab is a seven-inch Android 2.2 tablet, much like the Galaxy Tab, but is aimed distinctly at Koreans signing on to its service. Nintendo dropping DSi and DSI XL prices on September 12

Radeon HD 6000 appers in Mac OS X 10.6.5, leads benchmarks
The latest Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta already contains references to AMD's Radeon HD 6000 series graphics, explorers discovered this weekend. An ATIRadeonX3000 kernel extension found by Netkas refers to virtually the entire Southern Islands family, including the Antilles Pro and XT parts that may be the initial mobile chips. The chips will actually be the originally planned Northern Islands family relabeled and should run on a 40 nanometer process.

There's no shortage of apps to wake you up in the morning. Show Time may be the most extensive, and it has a wicked sense of humor as well.
The app handles multiple alarms and has 25 ambient noise selections to put you to sleep, or you can choose something from your iTunes collection. There are 58 versions of clock faces, all in horizontal or vertical layouts. The alarm clock goes off even if your phone is set to silent, and you can shake the clock to change the color of the display or to snooze the alarm.

ASUS Eee PC 1215N review
About nine months ago ASUS released its 12.1-inch Eee PC 1201N to much fanfare. It was the first "netbook" to pack NVIDIA's Ion platform and a desktop-class Atom processor. Translation: it absolutely wrecked regular netbooks (and even other Ion netbooks) on the graphics and performance battlefield. Indeed, the 1201N blurred the lines between netbook and regular laptop, but we ultimately knocked it fairly hard for not lasting longer than 2.5 hours on a charge -- it was dubbed a "netbook" of course.

Sandy Bridge tests show Intel video beating dedicated GPUs
Intel's Sandy Bridge processor architecture has had a first real test that shows a rare upset in graphics. Living up to claims of much faster integrated graphics, a quad-core 3.1GHz Core i5 2400 successfully outran AMD's Radeon HD 5450 dedicated video card in a series of AnandTech gaming benchmarks. The feat is an achievement for Intel, whose current video is notorious for trailing well behind not just dedicated video but often AMD and NVIDIA integrated video as well.

OLED-Displays sind im Moment wohl die schärfsten TV-Schirme im Moment wie auch die teuersten. Auf der IFA wird LG ein 31-Zoll-Modell, natürlich mit 3D, präsentieren und somit zeigen, was ein 29mm dünner Fernseher so alles kann, vor allem nämlich wachsen. AMD on Monday confirmed that it will drop the ATI label from its graphics chips. Starting with future devices, all video will be characterized as AMD Radeon or AMD FirePro parts. Im PC-Gamingsegment war ATI im Grafikkartenbereich die Alternative zu NVIDIA. Mit Betonung auf "war". AMD nimmt das ATI aus dem ATI Radeon. Wohl auch, weil die Herrschaften davon ausgehen, dass zwei Namen zu schwer zu merken sind für die Gamerspatzenhirne. So heißt ATI Eyefinity von nun an AMD Eyefinity und auch die Produktreihen Radeon und FirePro kommen ab jetzt ohne Präfix aus. Die ersten Produkte der "neuen" Reihe werden zu Ende des Jahres erwartet. Man geht davon aus, dass AMD's Interesse an Fusion APUs, also hybride CPU und GPU-Chips, hierbei manifestiert werden könnten.

Intel hat die Wireless Solutions Business-Sparte vom Chiphersteller Infineon für 1,4 Milliarden Dollar gekauft. Der WLS-Sektor brachte im vergangenen Jahr gut ein Drittel des Gesamtumsatzes von 3,83 Milliarden ein. Infineon ist u.a. auch für die 3G-Chips im iPhone zuständig. Sony hat neue Geräte ihrer Location Porter-Reihe angekündigt. Das RVT-SD200 und das RVT MR200 lösen somit das 100er-Modell der preisintensiven Reportergadgets ab. Apple Keynote 1997: Steve Jobs in Shorts
1997, kurz nach Steve Jobs Rückkehr zu Apple, stellte eben dieser in einer Presseveranstaltung in der Town-Hall im Apple-HQ in Cupertino die neue Image-Kampagne «Think Different» der versammelten Medienequipe vor. John Paczkowski von AllThingsD hat eine Aufzeichnung entdeckt, welches ein Videomitschnitt dieser Keynote zeigt. Paczkowski hat das Video auf Youtube veröffentlicht: Das Video zeigt Steve Jobs wie gewohnt in schwarzem Rollkragenpullover — etwas ungewohnter jedoch die ‘andere Hälfte’: Jobs trägt Shorts und Sandalen. Jobs schwört das Publikum auf die neue Image-Kampagne ein, durch welche die Marke Apple wieder neuen Glanz verleihen sollte und die die Welt verändern sollte — «Think Different» (Video). Now that LED backlighting has trickled down to nearly every HDTV lineup, it appears the big manufacturers will have to find new ways to differentiate their products, like LG's upcoming LEX8 television. Google's YouTube in talks for worldwide paid movie service
An inside news tip this evening has hinted that Google plans to significantly expand its YouTube movie rentals to a full-fledged, worldwide service. Several contacts told the Financial Times that talks are underway for a service that would stream major movie releases and which would be tied into both Google's search engine and YouTube.
