Canon's PowerShot G12 leaks out, promises HD video mode
To say that Canon's PowerShot G11 is growing long in the tooth would be understating things rather dramatically, and with Photokina just a few weeks away, now's as good a time as any to launch a prominent new camera into the world. News: Unknown Apple device appears in internal iOS 4.1 code
A placeholder for an as-yet-unknown Apple device has appeared in the latest internal build of the iOS 4.1 beta, according to a new report. Citing people familiar with the matter, AppleInsider reports that the latest iOS 4.1 build contains code referencing both the fourth-generation iPod touch—labeled iPod4,1—and a second-generation iPad—labeled iProd2,1. Foxconn hiring and relocating 400,000 workers
The recent issues at Foxconn haven't actually slowed the company down, apparently -- it has announced that it will be hiring 400,000 more workers at new plants in China, thanks to a 50 percent increase in revenue lately. The total number of people working at Foxconn will be estimated at 1.3 million. Just for comparison's sake, GM employed about 244,500 last year. Foxconn is moving almost that many workers out of its Shenzhen plant -- 170,000 of those workers will be sent to plants closer to their homes.

CVS to sell $100 Sylvania netbook and $179 e-reader this fall, Tylenol not included

HP reports Q3 2010 earnings, posts $2.3 billion operating profit
And to think -- that $2.3 billion figure might have been a few million higher if not for the absurd Golden Parachute that Mark Hurd will continue to float on for centuries to come. All jesting aside, HP published its Q3 2010 financials today, reporting a healthy $2.3b in operating profit (not to be confused with net income, which deducts those massive corporate taxes) and a 5 percent increase year-over-year. Dish Network survey hints at Google TV pricing options
So just how much would you pay for a set-top box or Blu-ray player with Google TV built in? "Compare Macs" option added to Apple Store
"Which Mac should I choose?" It's a question I've asked myself and had posed to me countless times. It comes down to your needs and budget, but some customers still struggle. This week, Apple has added a new comparison feature to the online Apple Store meant to make the process a little easier.
The new service lets you choose up to three Macs to compare side-by-side, stat by stat. Users can scroll through the report with comparable statistics perfectly aligned, and even view environmental reports. It's very handy and offers a clear picture of the differences both notable and minute.

Exclusive: Droid Pro is the global version of the Droid 2, LG enV Touch 2 will be Android-powered
We've learned from a source close to the situation that the rumored global version of the Droid 2 with GSM and CDMA radios is actually the same phone as the also-rumored Droid Pro -- although Verizon apparently has a tendency to fiddle with branding right up until the last minute, so the retail name could still change. Nikon D3100 DSLR hands-on
In addition to the S1100pj and S5100, we also had a chance to play with Nikon's 14.2 megapixel D3100 earlier today. Sadly, due to the non-final firmware, we weren't allowed to obtain live sample stills and 1080p H.264 clips from the prototype DSLR, so we can't comment too much on the new CMOS sensor's picture quality. Australian ratings board looks ahead to App Store crackdown
It's not a done deal by any means, but the Australian government's Classification Board is taking a hard look at games for mobile devices, which up until now have skated by the country's regulatory requirements that mandate a pass for content and age-appropriateness -- at a cost to developers of hundreds or thousands of A$. By November, we should know for sure whether or not App Store developers will have to choose between paying to have their games rated or pulling them out of the Australian market.

Nikon's new projector-equipped camera has broken cover today and we've naturally had a little play around with it. Regrettably, the Japanese DSLR dominator had pretty early firmware on board and refused to let us take any sample pictures or video, but we were able to compile a few impressions anyhow. Snap-on keyboard for iPhone 4
Last year, Mobile Mechatronics released the iTwinge snap-on keyboard for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. This week, industrial designer Altamash Jiwani has imagined what such a device would look like for the iPhone 4.
In Jiwani's design, the keyboard is a part of a larger piece that wraps around the phone much like Apple's Bumper case. The keyboard is on slider rails and can be moved out of the way of the home key. It also plugs into the dock connector, disabling the software keyboard entirely. Finally, a female dock port on the bottom allows the iPhone to be synchronized with the keyboard in place.

Leon, Mexico to use biometric scanners in 'all aspects of life'
First it was CCTV surveillance, and now a Mexican security firm called Portoss is teaming up with biometrics manufacturer Global Rainmakers, Inc., to make the city of Leon in Guanajuato the most potentially oppressive in the world. The secure city initiative will provide "unparalleled iris identity fusion" by wrapping the city in miles of fiber optic cable, creating a central database that will contain of all convicted criminals (as well as any good citizens who wish to "opt in"), and a network of iris scanners. Hands on with Hulu Plus
Maybe I'm missing the point of Hulu Plus, but for ten bucks a month why is Hulu still showing me advertisements? I get that this new for-pay streaming video service offers full seasons (and past seasons) of current TV shows that would otherwise be limited to a handful of the most recent episodes. I get that the service works over Wi-Fi and 3G, and all the killer functionality that entails.

Wir hatten ja vor Ewigkeiten schon mal ein Video des vermeintlichen Nokia N9 gesehen, jetzt aber gibt es Detail-Photos und ein Teardown, da blicken wir gleich viel besser durch und finden den alten Leak - ähem - altmodisch. Das Keyboard erinnert, wie ihr nach dem Break im Direktvergleich sehen könnt, ein wenig an ein MacBook Pro, was nun genau für ein Betriebssystem dahintersteckt ist allerdings noch fragwürdig. Es hat zwar auf dem iPhone und dem iPad auch niemand davon abgehalten Spiele zu spielen, aber Finger auf einem Touchscreen können, wenn man das Spielen sehr ernst nimmt, schon mal im Weg sein. Auf der Gamescom wurden nun Gerüchte laut, dass die nächste PSP Touch-Funktionen hat, die aber von hinten bedient werden. Einen Prototyp, der in ungefähr die Größe der PSP-3000 hat, soll die Runde machen. Was genau nun über diese Touchsektion auf der Rückseite bedient werden soll ist allerdings noch ziemlich unklar.

Koreans swamp servers as pre-orders begin
iPhone 4 pre-orders have begun in Korea, and distributor KT Corporation (KTC) is reporting huge sales. Specifically, 130,000 orders were placed within the first 13 hours of availability. By comparison, it took 5 days to sell 65,000 units of the 3GS.
KTC reportedly had to expand their server capacity during the frenzied day as the initial surge brought service down. Customers were trying to connect from multiple locations, like work and home, in an attempt to make a successful transaction.

If you, like me, were a big scifi/fantasy reader at a young age, you probably remember the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series. Intel acquires McAfee for $7.68 billion
Well, we got our copy of McAfee Antivirus for $29, but it looks like Intel had something a little more substantial in mind. The latter has picked up the Santa Clara-based security / antivirus company for a cool $7.68 billion, which works out to $48 per share in cash. Intel today surprised the tech community by acquiring antivirus developer McAfee for the equivalent of $7.68 billion in stock. LG talks up Optimus smartphone line: 10 devices by year end, NVIDIA's Tegra for high-end model, tablet will be 'productive'
LG's Ally might be scratching at the boring end of the Android landscape right now, but LG certainly isn't stopping with one smartphone on the market in 2010. iPad ship times shrink from seven to three days
It seems like only yesterday when anyone chomping at the bit to get their hands on an iPad had to wait a painfully long time to get one. Then the shipping time dropped down to anywhere from seven to 10 days, and new customers didn't have the shakes of anticipation for too long.
Just recently, though, Apple has dropped the expected ship date for iPads down to as few as a mere three days. Word is that the wait for an iPhone 4 may drop significantly by the end of September as well.

Scheck belegt Zahlung von Facebook-Kläger Ceglia an Zuckerberg
Dem Wellsville Daily Reporter liegt nach eigenen Angaben ein Scheck vor, der eine Geschäftsbeziehung zwischen dem Holzpellet-Händler Paul Ceglia und Facebook-Gründer Mark Zuckerberg belegt. Auf dem im April 2003 auf Zuckerberg ausgestellten Scheck über 3000 Dollar ist kein Verwendungszweck angegeben. Ceglia behauptet, dass er als Bezahlung für eine Auftragsarbeit gedacht war. Angeblich habe er 2003 einen Vertrag mit Zuckerberg geschlossen, wonach ihm ein 84-Prozent-Anteil an dem Social Network zustehen soll.

Silk: it's stronger than Kevlar, thinner than a human hair, it's biocompatible (it doesn't trigger human immune system response), and it's produced by insects (although some new-fangled metabolically engineered bacteria seem to be up to the task). If you picked up Samsung's 640GB S2 portable USB hard drive earlier this year then you might want to look away. Sammy just update the drive with a USB 3.0 interface and 7,200RPM spindle speed that should easily best its predecessor when it comes to pushing the bits around. Nikon tonight confirmed the existence of the D3100, a major revamp of its entry-level DSLR. The camera in some ways is Nikon's best as it's the first mainstream model to shoot above 12 megapixels, at 14, and its first to shoot 1080p video. We had a feeling we'd be seeing the well-leaked Nikon D3100 this week after the Coolpix S1100pj and S5100 were officially launched on Tuesday, and here it is, right on cue. Judging by the four dozen or so emails that have popped up in our email since midnight ET, Apple has put up its great big Sticky Note[TM] to mask whatever it is doing behind the scenes. Wartungsupdate für Video-Player VLC
Der Open-Source-Videoplayer ist in einer neuen Version 1.1.3 erhältlich. Das Update beschränkt sich auf Bugfixes: Unter anderem haben die Entwickler ein Problem beim Umgang mit FTP-Pfaden und den Podcast- und DVD-Modulen behoben. Facebook Places brings social location check-ins to iPhone
Facebook today launched Facebook Places, its own equivalent to location check-in services such as Foursquare. The service both provides a way of marking both immediate presence but also adds a more social component. Visitors can post status updates that stay after they leave and tag friends who are in the area, even if they don't have a device that can check in.

An iPad, a couple, and a wedding
The iPad plays such a big part of some peoples' lives that you could almost say they're married to their iPads. And for others, they just get married by their iPads -- well, sort of.
The iPad helped facilitate the wedding of Aaron and Katie, as it made its rounds to the priest and then the bride and groom. Not only did bride Katie read her vows to husband Aaron from the iPad, she composed them on it as well.
While the couple's wedding was held outdoors, a gazebo provided shade to help make reading easier; the iPad's glass screen and the sunlight usually don't make a good combination for readability.

The iPad Project documents deploying iPads at school
We've been following the folks at D7 Consulting as they roll out a set of iPads awarded them by Box.net (and keep an eye out later this week for an update on that), but that's not the only group of people attempting to use iPads in a collective space. Several leaked images show Sony's upcoming A55 and A33 DSLRs that recently surfaced in a separate report. The A55 is expected to get a 16 megapixel sensor with an ISO range of 100 to 12,800 and support for 1080i video. SanDisk reviving dead MP3 player business with Fuze+
SanDisk is finally upgrading its core MP3 player line, a leak this evening showed. The Sansa Fuze+ should replace the 2.5 year old original with a fresher design that uses capacitive touch buttons and a color OLED display. It would address some longstanding complaints with support for AAC and H.264, although Engadget's spec notes SanDisk is keeping the largely unused slotRadio format an option for its microSDHC slot.

Several top carriers and technology companies have resumed talk between themselves over net neutrality in the wake of broken talks with the FCC, connections revealed this evening. Has the iPhone App Market already crashed?
At GDC Europe earlier this week, Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz claimed that the iPhone app market "has already crashed. You cannot sell your game for 99 cents and expect a return." Apple has said that developers are collectively making more than a billion dollars on the App Store, but Hubertz knocks that figure down a few notches, suggesting that because there are over 250,000 actual apps on the store, no one developer is making enough to cover the development costs of any game worth making.

Toshiba tests 2.5 terabit per square inch hard drive
Toshiba said today that it had successfully tested a new hard disk technology that packs in 2.5 terabits of data per square inch. This marks a four-fold increase in density over todayís hard disks. While Toshiba has yet to prove that it can read and write data using this next-generation approach to bit patterned media, news of the breakthrough is significant as it comes at a time when the rotating media industry has not settled on an industry roadmap for the next generation of hard disks.
