Apple begins selling $99 day passes to compatibility labs
People belonging to the Mac Developer Program should now have limited access to the company's compatibility labs, reports say. In the past, access was restricted to members of the Apple Developer Connection, which cost a minimum of $499 per year and as much as $3,499. The ADC was canceled in favor of the MDP earlier in 2010 however, at the same time as annual fees were reduced to $99.

Madden 2011 out for iPad and iPhone
This year has just flown by -- it's almost that time again, when the leaves start to change color, the kids head back to school, and footballs fill the air. That also means the new Madden is now out, and for the first time, EA has brought the game to the iPad. By all accounts, it's pretty good -- the graphics are not quite comparable to the console versions, but they look nice, and you also get the ability to draw out hot routes and use an adapted version of the GameFlow feature from the console versions. Plus, the iPad version is also getting multiplayer soon, as well as a "Vintage Voltage Football" mode, a Madden-style homage to the old electric football games.

Report: Amazon building prototype hardware other than Kindle
The New York Times' Bits blog is reporting that "people with direct knowledge" of Amazon's plans say that Lab 126 -- the division of the company which designed the Kindle -- is currently looking into other hardware, i.e. devices that are not the Kindle. One unnamed source reports that such devices would be a "means to an end," meant to enable easy purchasing of Amazon's content, which currently includes music, movies, and digital books. Frankly, you could've stopped at "Mercedes SLS AMG" and "Isle of Man," but toss in ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, a litany of 3D cameras, helicopters and a closed section of the Mountain Road and well, you've got magic in the making. Sprint rolls out simple U1901 4G modem for Macs, PCs
Sprint bolstered its 4G modem mix on Tuesday by adding a new, straightforward 4G modem. The unbranded U1901 provides WiMAX alone but is designed to work out of the box for both Intel Macs and Windows users through a disc-free install. It has two antenna ports to boost reception in a docking cradle and has a rotating USB connector to fit into the MacBook Air and other notebooks with a tight fit.

Review: Engage Wired Optical Mouse
MacNN has reviewed the Engage Wired Optical Mouse, a low-cost mouse for Macs and PCs sold by OfficeMax. Ergonomics are said to be strong on the medium-sized controller, even for small and large hands. While sensitivity is estimated to be only 400dpi, the device does have a scrollwheel between the left and right buttons. Dell Streak to ship Friday for $300 with AT&T, $550 without
Dell today finally outlined plans to ship its first pure touch tablet, the Streak. Following pre-orders, the company is shipping the Android tablet on Friday the 13th for $300 with a two-year AT&T data plan or $550 as an unlocked device. HP webOS tablet moved to early 2011
HP has narrowed down the timeframe for its PalmPad tablet, multiple tips claimed today. Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley reportedly held an all-staff meeting on Monday that put the webOS slate in the first quarter of 2011, or no later than March. The "trusted" contacts for Engadget also corroborated reports that its internal codename is Hurricane, though it's likely to change to PalmPad or another name by launch.

Box.net adds caching and update notifications to mobile apps
The folks at Box.net have announced new features that will be a part of a soon-to-be-release update to both their iPad and iPhone apps. Specifically, caching will allow for offline access to files and update notifications will keep track of file versions.
The first is exciting for users like me without 3G iPads. Now we can browse our files while offline. Imagine no more rushing around to find a Wi-Fi network just so you can reference a document.
Also, the update will let you know when a colleague has made a change to a document. You'll see an alert and get the option to update your local version or not. This way you can sync saved file

Screen Grabs: EVO 4G captures illicit in-progress surgery on The Closer
The Sprint badge on our EVO 4G definitely isn't lit up in florescent yellow, but the logo on Sgt. David Gabriel's sure is. PC shipments may have "fallen off a cliff" in July
Computer shipments have suddenly "fallen off a cliff" in the past month, JP Morgan analyst Christopher Danely said in a new research note. Checking with Taiwan suppliers, he understood that Acer, HP and Lenovo have all cut their orders for notebooks, chips or both as of July. Other companies weren't named, but their positions in the top five PC builders points to others being affected as well.

iPad mod recalls old TV
Here's an iPad mod of questionable usefulness, but it looks nice. Artist Jonas Damon built an enclosure for his iPad that resembles an old cathode-ray television (just like grandma used to have). He only used parts he found lying around his apartment. Even the rear of the case has been built to resemble those old TV's case design, where it bulged to accommodate those huge tubes.
Topping it all off is the video of "snow" that the iPad is playing. Of course, such a case limits the iPad's portability to say the least, but now it's a great video/game station. You'll see that the dock connector cable is protruding from the back so I can still be connected to a com

Sam's Club emulates Apple with free in-store Wi-Fi
Walmart's sub-brand Sam's Club today said it will offer shoppers free Wi-Fi in its stores this holiday season. Safari extension highlight: SnapBack and Reload
With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.
Today we're highlighting two extensions that restore functionality to Safari that's been lost: the reload button and the snapback arrow.
Reload Button is a Safari extension that puts a big, healthy reload button back into your toolbar. Safari 5 moved it inside the address bar, and many users (myself included) liked it better in the toolbar.

Kaspersky today identified one of the first readily identifiable instances of Android malware in the field. Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a comes disguised as a media player app but secretly sends text messages in the background to destinations that will charge the user, often without permission or notices. European Union teams with FTC on Apple Flash policies
The European Commission has joined with the US Federal Trade Commission in probing Apple policies towards Flash, a source for the New York Post claims. Little else is known about the effort, although the Commission has taken a strong stance on interoperability, with which Apple's locks on iOS and the App Store may come into conflict. A combined investigation could take as long as four to six months, the source says.

AT&T gibt den Gerüchten um ein Ende des iPhone-Exklusivität ein wenig Substanz: Ohne Nennung spezieller Produktnamen wurde der US-Börsenaufsicht SEC mitgeteilt, dass die Exklusivität für den Vertrieb einiger Smartphones in Kürze auslaufen wird.

Toshiba preps technology to wipe hard drives after power-off
Toshiba today said it had developed a new technique to make self-encrypting hard drives truly secure. Known just as Wipe, it would let companies and individuals flag the internal encryption key so that it's automatically erased if the system is shut down or if the drive is removed. After a near-constant string of leaks, Verizon today finally confirmed the existence of the Motorola Droid 2. The sequel to the best-selling Android phone ever is based on the same roots as the Droid X and has its 1GHz processor and customized Blur UI but in a QWERTY slider design familiar to original Droid owners. Dimensions is a pretty interesting idea for an iPhone app. It's a set of 3D tools that you can actually use in real life, all put together by making use of the iPhone's hardware in various ways. There's a caliper, a ruler, a couple of tape measures for various sizes, a measuring wheel for even longer distances, and a pedometer. There are a few other surprises, too, including a lightning distance calculator, and a level, both likely included just for fun.
Unfortunately, while the tools work well, the app doesn't actually provide any instruction on how to use them. If you don't know how to use a caliper or a level already, you're going to be on your own -- the app doesn't have a lot of polish or documentation, which is too bad. Google und Verizon Communications haben Rahmenbedingungen für eine gesetzliche Regelung zur Netzneutralität vorgeschlagen. RED Scarlet makes surprise cameo filming EPIC's fast focus

Pear Note 2 adds web sharing, playback speed adjustments
Useful Fruit Software has released Pear Note 2, an update to its note-taking software. Pear Note integrates text notes with audio or video recordings, while presenting information on a timeline. The software can jump to a specific point on the timeline for audio or visual playback, giving users numerous references to the text notes recorded at that point. Keynote, Powerpoint and PDF slides can be dragged into the timeline for additional references. Pear Note also provides a text search that finds entries as a user types, narrowing possibilities with each keystroke.

A Brazilian site named MacMagazine claims to have heard from a source within Apple that the company's annual back-to-school iPod press conference might be held as soon as next week. Nearly half of student notebook buyers choosing Macs
A new Student Monitor study revealed this weekend that almost half of college students getting a notebook plan to buy Macs. Of the 87 percent of prospective buyers, 47 percent plan to get some form of MacBook. The figure is an all-time high for Apple and has seen interest in Dell and HP shrink to just 12 and 11 percent each.

Useful Fruit Software has released Pear Note 2.0, a new version of the very powerful note-taking app for the Mac. Google and Verizon's net neutrality proposal explained
After a week of rumors hinting at Google and Verizon brokering some sort of net neutrality "deal," the two companies made some waves this afternoon with a hastily-arranged press call during which CEOs Eric Schmidt and Ivan Seidenberg emphatically denied any sort of formal business arrangement and instead put forth what they called a "joint policy proposal" -- seven principles they say will preserve the open internet while allowing networks operators the flexibility and freedom to manage their networks.

Canon may finally out EOS 60D, 1Ds Mark IV at Aug. 26 event
Canon's often anticipated DSLR updates, including the EOS 60D and EOS 1Ds Mark IV, may finally show themselves by the end of the month based on recent talk. At least Canon Poland has reportedly sent out invitations to an August 26 event for a new "flagship DSLR" that would likely be the 1Ds Mark IV. Little is known about what would entail, but the 1Ds series has usually been a full-frame version of the 1D model that shoots at a higher resolution; a new model would likely add higher light sensitivity and 1080p video.

RED shows working Scarlet camera
On the company's official forums, RED has shown off a working version of its long-expected and delayed Scarlet. There is also a link to a movie (MOV) that illustrates the fast autofocus function of the camera, as it's controlling an 85mm Canon lens in Single Shot AF mode. Despite these teasers, the camera is still not ready for a mass-market release, but the team at RED is still committed to the project.
