ASUS planning an 8-inch grayscale LCD e-reader for October, pricing expected 'under $599'
Unless ASUS means "$400 under $599," we've got a feeling this e-reading device might as well not try its luck on the market. Nevertheless, word from Taiwan is that the company is indeed preparing an 8-inch LCD-based ebook reader -- with 64 levels of gray, no backlight, and fast refresh times -- to take on the E Ink-powered incumbents this October. Best Buy teases Rocketfish-branded iPad clone
Best Buy is hoping to jump on the tablet bandwagon with a device of its own, the company's CTO Robert Stephens has teased. The design is an empty shell at present but when finished would carry the Rocketfish badge applied to many of its in-house computer peripherals. Stephens had previously said that a future tablet would use Android 2.2, and in shots showed that the tablet would be smaller than the iPad it's targeted against.

News: iOS 4.1 Beta 3 enables e-mail based FaceTime calls
iOS 4.1 Beta 3, the latest beta version of Apple’s upcoming software update, has a new feature that allows for FaceTime calls to be associated with an email address instead of a phone number. A Delta Airlines app is on the way
Rather recently, American Airlines released an iPhone app that offers quite a few nice features for the AA traveler, including flight status, boarding pass access and Soduku. With the exception of that last feature, travel app Kayak offers many of these features already, though it's not stopping other airlines from following suit.

Apple uses third-party app screenshots in patent applications, world erupts in hysteria
There's been a bit of a furor in the past couple days over Apple using third-party app screenshots in several patent applications that were just made public -- the most talked-about example is a screenshot of an app called Where To? that appears in a travel-related patent, but other apps like a Ralph Lauren app appear in a shopping-related patent as well. HP chief resigns suddenly after sexual harassment claims
HP faced a shock upheaval on Friday as it revealed that its CEO Mark Hurd was resigning all his positions immediately following accusations of sexual harassment. The decision followed after both HP's general counsel and an outside legal team found that he had violated the PC builder's standards of conduct, although he wasn't found to have engaged in harassment. Hurd didn't directly admit any claims but acknowledged he "did not live up to the standards" of the company.

Mysterious HTC Windows Phone 7 device breaks cover at FCC, swears it was invited
It's one of the most barebones filings we've seen in recent memory, but there's no mistaking that at least one Windows Phone 7 device from HTC is going to make a stateside debut. If we had to guess, we'd say that this is the first official look at whatever phone we spotted late last month, but the only identifying mark anywhere is a PD26100 model number. Rumor has Apple planning early iPod, iOS announcements
Apple is planning an unusually early event for the announcement of new iPods, a "reliable source" claims. The company normally showcases new iPods in September, along with iTunes enhancements and any other products that might be relevant. The source suggests, though, that Apple has this year scheduled an event for around August 14th to the 16th. Since the 14th and 15th fall on the weekend, the 16th or 17th may be more likely.

Amazon seen with 61% of e-book market, Apple under 5%
Amazon still has a comfortable lead over Apple and other rivals in the US e-book market, an analysis by RR Bowker found. The group disputes both claims by Amazon and said Amazon's Kindle Store controlled 61 percent of e-book downloads, or 10 to 20 percent less than Amazon itself thought. Barnes & Noble's store has 20 percent where Sony has five percent.

Guy moving to New York wants a roomie who doesn't have an iPhone
An ad posted to Craigslist yesterday is from an open-minded sort of guy who wants a roommate for an apartment in Soho. Sounds typical, right? Here's the catch: He insists that prospective roommates not have an iPhone or an iPad.

LG, Samsung recruit design professors to counter iPhone UI
LG and Samsung this week have simultaneously hired visual design academics to improve the quality of their user interfaces. LG was first and on Tuesday hired Korea Institute of Advanced Technology dean Lee Kun-pyo to head up its Design Management Center. Samsung immediately followed suit on Wednesday by hiring Kookmin University's professor of Visual Communications Design Jung Ji-hong, who will now oversee smartphone interface design at the company's Mobile Design Group.

iPad app store gains genius section
Sometime early this morning, Apple quietly unleashed the genius section of the iPad app store, something that's been in the iPhone app store for quite some time. It's interesting how Apple is always "quietly" releasing new things, while making a big to-do about others. What's also interesting is how a new feature in the app store can be made without a software update.
Not only does the new genius section of the iPad app store provide the same type of recommendations as with the iPhone, there's a new tab titled "iPad Upgrades," which shows you all of the iPad (aka, "HD") versions of the iPhone apps you already have. Apple plagiarizing others' work in patent diagrams?
Apple effectively stole the look of a third-party iPhone app for one of its own patents, claims one of the app's developers, Ortwin Gentz. Gentz belongs to FutureTap, the company which bought Where To? from original creators tap tap tap. The app uses GPS technology to find nearby points of interest, and was once considered a flagship of the App Store, having helped to launch it in July 2008.

Safari extension highlight: Better Geocaching
Although I don't get a chance to do as much geocaching as I'd like to, I still check the Geocaching.com cache maps on occasion to see what's new in the area. Usually, I do this by checking with the US$9.99 Geocaching app, but sometimes I find myself logging into the Geocaching.com website to do my searching.

Meridian launches M80 high-end compact entertainment system, we yawn
If you'd have asked us back in 2008 to predict what new features a successor to Meridian's Ferrari co-branded F80 compact entertainment system would have, things like HD video playback in the form of an HD DVD or Blu-ray player, an HDMI connection and iPod integration would have been no-brainers. Genius tab takes front row at iPad App Store
Apple has made a small but noticeable change to the iPad version of the App Store, introducing a "Genius" tab to the app's bottom menu bar. Previously, the bar contained just the regular Featured, Top 25/Charts, Categories and Updates tabs universal to iOS devices. On an iPhone or iPod touch, people must still tap the Featured tab to find the Genius option located up top.

Apple reportedly in talks to buy Chinese gaming company Handseeing
We don't often hear from the source of an Apple acquisition target before the deal is done, but that's just what's happened in this case -- a VP at Chinese gaming company Handseeing says that it's in talks with Apple about an acquisition and "should have a decision in about one or two months." What could Apple possibly want with the little known company? Your guess is as good as ours, but the company's main product is its JGnet platform for online games -- which, incidentally, is Java-based. Help! The iPhone 4 has replaced my iPad!
It took me a while to take the plunge and buy an iPad. After the third time trying it out (once in the local Apple store, and then testing out two that belonged to in-laws) and countless frustrating moments with my netbook, I went for it. For a good month or so, I was in love with my new iPad. It was much faster than my now-eBayed netbook, and it didn't burn my groin like my MacBook Pro. With a few exceptions, it did everything I wanted in a casual computing device.
Alongside the iPad sat my iPhone 3G. It became more neglected over time because, well, who wants to do all that neat stuff (slowly) on such a small screen? But then came the

iZiNN CJ-3: Klon vom N8 ist natürlich auch schon am Start

Cablevision will let its subscribers stream cable programming to wireless network connected devices such as the iPad, the provider said. With their handheld devices, users will also have the ability to browse and access digital video content from their TVs. NTT DoCoMo plans unofficial iPhone 4 support
Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo will begin supporting the iPhone 4 later this month, albeit in an unofficial capacity, according to Reuters. Japan: Apple must offer replacement Nano batteries
The Japanese government has now ordered Apple Japan to post a message on its website, Reuters reports, informing the public it can get a replacement battery for the iPod nano. The demand follows years of pressure, to which Japan's industry ministry has accused Apple of being unresponsive. Apple is planning a huge ramp in production for a new MacBook Air that could suggest a much more mainstream design, BMO analyst Keith Bachman said today. Boy, this thing here has more questions than answers attached to it. Presented as the first Windows Phone 7 device to show up in Pakistan, of all places, this angular handset bears a serial number on top and atypical "powered by ASUS" branding on the bottom, leading us to believe that if it's legit, it's certainly a pre-production model. Don't get too excited about the App Store's "Try Before You Buy"
9to5Mac spotted a new section in the App Store called Try Before You Buy, but don't get too excited about the idea of demos finally coming to the App Store. As of right now, this is only an index of "Lite" or free versions of apps. If you were hoping to try OmniFocus for iPad without shelling out $40, you're out of luck. What you'll find are about 100 apps that developers purposefully made because the App Store doesn't have demo versions.

New Nokia Siemens tech could eke more bandwidth for 3G data
Nokia Siemens Networks today detailed a technology that could potentially help mitigate the data crunch at some cellphone carriers. Dynamic Frequency and Channel Allocation (DFCA) reduces the amount of bandwidth that a GSM call needs to work. The approach can either double the room for conventional voice calls or leave more room for cellular data, including 3G over HSPA or 4G on LTE. Either can reduce the need for extra cell sites or improve the quality on existing parts of the network.

HTC und Samsung profitieren vom Android-Boom
Laut IDC haben Anbieter von Android-Handys im zweiten Quartal die größten Zuwächse im Smartphonemarkt erzielt. North America's first public-use quick-charge station opens in Portland: 3-handed politician not included
What's being hailed as North America's first public-use quick-charge station for electric vehicles has just been unveiled in Portland. The station, built by NEC subsidiary Takasago, is installed in a PGE headquarters parking garage and will charge electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries to 80% in about 20 to 30 minutes. So yeah, it's public, as long as you've got a PGE badge apparently. Google dementiert Einigung mit Verizon

HP verspricht zahlreiche Geräte mit WebOS
Hewlett-Packards Chief Technology Officer Shane Robison hat betont, dass das mit Palm übernommene Betriebssystem WebOS eine weitreichende Veränderung von HPs Portfolio bewirken wird. Yosion Apple Peel 520 Review bestätigt: iPod Touch kann telefonieren

Wir hatten gewisse Zweifel daran, ob das Apple Peel 520, das einen iPod Touch in ein Handy verwandelt, wirklich funktioniert, aber in China gib es erste Tests und Reviews, und tatsächlich, es funktioniert wie versprochen und existiert wirklich. Der Adapter kommt mit SIM-Karten Slot, Batterie, Dock-Connector, Handychip und Vibrator. Nach Jailbreak muss man allerdings noch das Telefon und SMS App installieren, sowie die Yosion und YsSMS App, dann aber geht es los und hat ein paar Nachteile. Kommandoserver eines britischen Banking-Botnetzes geschlossen
Laut einer der britischen Metropolitan Police nahestehenden Quelle ist ein Kommandoserver in Osteuropa vom Netz getrennt worden, der ein Banking-Botnetz in Großbritannien gesteuert hat. Nach Angaben des Sicherheitsunternehmens Trusteer wurden über das Botnetz Kreditkarten- und Kontodaten von britischen Verbrauchern und Unternehmen gesammelt. MiTube app flies high but is quickly shot down
You kinda knew it was going to happen. Earlier this week the app store approved MiTube, a YouTube app that allowed you to both view and download videos. Sounded like a great idea, and the app was free, but YouTube is not exactly a downloading service, and the clock had to be ticking on the viability of MiTube.
Kerplonk! It's gone. Getting the app yanked is not a big surprise. How it ever got in the app store is a bigger question. Just a couple of weeks ago HandyLight was pulled. It looked like a flashlight app, but in fact it had hidden features that allowed you to tether an iPad or a laptop to your iPhone and share your 3G signal. Apple approved it, then pulled it when the word got out of what the app really did.

Mac usage surges amongst University of Virginia freshmen since 2004
According to the University of Virginia's Information Technology and Communication (ITC), which services the IT needs for most of the campus, 43 percent of first-year students at its residence halls during 2009 were using a Mac.
The figure represents a continuation of a five-year trend that's seeing increased Mac penetration on the campus amongst first year students. Droid X update to Android 2.2 coming 'by early September'
A Motorola support forum response about issues involving Exchange 2003 email problems on the Droid X has actually yielded something far more juicy: an updated window for the Froyo upgrade's release. Apple bike computer patent surfaces
My Polar CS200 bicycle computer is one of the few standalone gizmos my iPhone hasn't replaced yet. Hooked up wirelessly to sensors on my bike and a chest strap, the CS200 gives me data on speed, cadence, distance, pace, and heart rate during my daily rides. My current bike computer gets the job done, but I've often wished for a fuller-featured solution, especially since Polar's computers aren't able to sync with Macs without using third-party software, some of which is pretty expensive.

FCC breaks off stalled net neutrality talks
The FCC today brought a halt to talks with political lobbyists from carriers after the two sides couldn't reach an agreement over network neutrality. Agency Chief of Staff Edward Lazarus claimed the discussions had been "productive on several fronts" but that they had stalled and wouldn't "preserve the openness and freedom of the Internet." He didn't rule out further conversation but said options were open at this stage.
