CTIA sues San Francisco over cellphone radiation law
San Francisco may have signed cellphone radiation labels into law, but the stickers won't stick without a fight -- the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) just filed a complain in federal district court, claiming the new law supersedes the FCC's authority to regulate radio emissions and misleads consumers into believing some phones are safer than others. As we've discussed previously, the CTIA does have something of a point. Every phone that makes it to market is rigorously tested for cell phone radiation levels, and those that pass fall below a specific 1.6 watt per kilogram threshold already.

HP swears no Windows Phone 7 devices
HP's Executive VP Todd Bradley confirmed in an interview on Friday that the company is dropping any future plans for a Microsoft OS on a phone. While he guarded himself by stressing that HP would still be "Microsoft's biggest customer," Bradley told CNBC that there would never be a Windows Phone 7 device from HP. Hitachi 'Life Microscope' promises to track your every movement
Sure, there's plenty of devices like the Fitbit that can track your movement and report on your general level of activity or laziness, but only Hitachi has what it's dubbed a "Life Microscope." That name apparently comes from the fact that the device is able to track your activity with more detail than other fitness monitors -- including, it seems, the difference between sitting and sleeping, and even the difference between eating or playing video games. iHome announces iPad clock radio dock
Filed under: Accessories, iPadiHome has announced the first clock radio with a fully functioning iPad dock. In addition to traditional clock radio features, you get a Bluetooth connection to use with your iPad. You will be able to sync the proper time from an iPhone, and in turn, the alarm settings from the radio get synced to your iPad. You can also pair the physical device with the free iHome+Sleep app, which will eventually gain iPad optimization. You will be able to use both iPhones and iPods with the dock.

Youtube baute nun die Ressourcen in Richtung iPad Kompatibilität, zur Freude der schon recht gelangweilten iPad Nutzer, aus. Ab sofort gibt es die Möglichkeit sogenannte embedded Videos ohne Jailbreak oder ähnliche Veränderungen direkt im Webbrowser abspielen zu können.

Apple releases iBooks 1.1.2 update
Filed under: iPhone, App StoreJust days after releasing iBooks 1.1.1, Apple has updated the app again. iBooks 1.1.1 introduced the ability to double-tap an image within a book in order to view it in greater detail and the ability to experience books that include audio and video, among other fixes.

Angeblich bereitet NEC für das 4. Quartal deutliche Preissenkungen bei den derzeit 6 bis 8 US-Dollar teuren USB-3.0-Chips der ersten und zweiten Generation vor. Wir erinnern uns noch gut an die endlose Flash vs. HTML5 Diskussion? Gut. Denn jetzt geht YouTube endlich einen Schritt weiter und ermöglicht einbetten von Videos ohne Flash. Damit lassen sich endlich auch eingebettete Videos von YouTube auf anderen Webseiten auf den Handys ansehen, die "noch" kein Flash können, oder einfach kategorisch drauf verzichten. Tabcandy: Firefox Tabs

Wer wie wir bei seinen Tabs meist kaum noch durchblickt, aber dennoch irgendwie dieses eine Browserfenster nicht schliessen will, weil da könnte ja noch was wichtiges sein, der braucht Tabcandy. Die Begeisterung im Video nach dem Break ist deutlich zu hören. Und wir verstehen auch warum, denn nicht nur lassen sich so Gruppen von Tabs bauen, und extrem übersichtlich verwalten sondern wenn man sich das Video bis zu Ende ansieht, dann gibt es wirklich eine völlig neue Generation von Browserordnung zu entdecken. Wir sind schon mal überzeugt, dass wir vielleicht doch bald wieder auf Firefox umsteigen müssen.

iBooks 1.1.2 beseitigt "Problem bei der Aktualisierung"
Auf das noch junge iBooks 1.1.1, das eine Reihe von deutlichen Verbesserungen mit sich brachte, ließ Apple gestern Abend Version 1.1.2 folgen, die "ein kleines Problem bei der Aktualisierung von iBooks" beseitigt. Sony, Tohoku University develop blue-violet laser with 100 watt output, eyeing 1TB optical disk future?

Blue Screen of Death plagued Deepwater Horizon oil rig 'months' before disaster
A recent report in the New York Times details a myriad issues that led up to the eventual explosion that started the mess known as the "BP oil spill," but aside from obvious mishandling of warnings and red flags, one particular issue was troubling those working on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig long before April 20th. Apple pulls Droid X into antenna battle
Apple escalated its war on its competitors' antenna claims with a new comparison against the Droid X. Despite Motorola claiming in a full page ad that the Droid X's dual antennas made it immune to reception problems, Apple shows a tight bottom grip killing the phone's signal entirely. The phone's signal was one of the weakest of the group if measured solely by its bars, as it was already down to three bars before the grip.

Chipophone is the chiptune organ that you've always wanted
This is no ordinary electric organ, my friend. Swedish software engineer Linus Åkesson loves chiptune so much (don't we all?) that he felt the urge to convert this old-school instrument into an 8-bit synthesizer. By rewiring the keys, pedals and buttons to a couple of microcontrollers (which isn't quite our usual weekend projects in the garage), the reborn organ -- dubbed the Chipophone -- can now reproduce classic hits like Super Mario Bros' theme tune on the fly. Oh, and you can even record loops and change their tempo on this bad boy. We're not sure if Linus is planning on publishing the full details of his fabulous mod, but he'll be performing here all week

Apple keeps antennagate alive with Droid X's 'kill switch' (video)
We had a feeling Apple wasn't done showing off the apparent reception woes of its competitors -- after all, the company already updated once this week with the Nokia N97 mini. Now it's going after Motorola's celebrity of the moment (and known iPhone 4 bully), the Droid X. AT&T preps smartphones plans with built-in unlimited SMS
A newly unearthed AT&T briefing has shown the carrier will soon have smartphone plans with messaging built-in. Rather than choose a separate messaging plan, customers will have the option of a "Talk, Text, Web & E-mail" plan that already factors in unlimited MMS and SMS. The chart spied by Engadget shows that each carry a $20 premium over the standard versions, or roughly the same price as needed for choosing unlimited access on its own.

Firefox 4 to get tabs with Expose, Spaces-like features
Mozilla developer Aza Raskin today previewed an upcoming addition to Firefox 4 that will bring some of Apple's OS concepts to tabs. Tab Candy will organize groups of tabs in Spaces-like environments that keep them separate; the trick would let a user keep only news or only social networking tabs visible. CTIA sues San Francisco to block radiation warning law
The CTIA on Friday sued the city of San Francisco in a bid to stop a mandatory radiation warning law. The carrier-run organization claims that the city is overstepping its boundaries and that only the FCC has the "exclusive and comprehensive" authority to determine how radiation is displayed. The CTIA insisted that San Francisco's decision to show the SAR radiation levels for all phones was misleading, as it gave the impression certain phones were safer without definitive scientific proof.
