Ngmoco releases We Farm in the US, celebrates three million We Rulers with free mojo

Part leak backs front camera for fourth-gen iPod touch
Photos shared by an iPhone parts supplier reinforce the notion that the fourth-generation iPod touch will have a front- as well as a rear-facing camera. The images depict both sides of a Touch's front panel, with a cutout for the Home button matched by a smaller lens-sized hole on the opposite end. One photo shows a cable stamped "Apple (C) 2010;" a more specific date, April 29th 2010, can be found in the other image.

RAW compatibility update for iPhoto and Aperture 3
An update was released this week for Aperture 3 and iPhoto, providing really nothing more than RAW compatibility to a bunch of new cameras.
For the most part, those concerned with RAW support in software are those who do professional-grade photo editing or are intent on saving uncompressed versions of photos, either for posterity's sake or because disk space is so cheap these days. The casual digital photographer wouldn't likely care about the RAW format.
Added to the list of cameras now supported in these applications: Canon PowerShot SX1 IS, Olympus E-PL1, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10, Samsung NX10, Sony Alpha DSLR-A390, Sony Alpha NEX-3, Sony Alpha NEX-5.

Rumor: Fourth gen iPod touch to include Facetime camera
Is the above picture of the fourth generation iPod touch's faceplate? MacRumors thinks so -- they say they got the pictures from an iPhone parts supplier, who claims it's what you'll see on the front of the newest iPod touch. And of course right there on the right side of the case (which would be on top of the screen), you can see a little cutout for what's presumably a front-facing camera meant for Facetime. That lines up with what we've heard in the past, that the iPod touch would use email addresses for Facetime rather than phone numbers

News: Images of iPod touch 4G LCD panel with FaceTime camera emerge
New images of what is claimed to be a fourth-generation iPod touch LCD and front panel, with a hole for a front-facing camera, have appeared online. According to Mac Rumors, the photos were sent in by an iPhone parts supplier, and show both the front and back of the panel assembly. FCC chair: neutrality would trump any Google/Verizon pact
Any possible pact between Google and Verizon on Internet neutrality would have no effect on the FCC's policies, agency chairman Julius Genachowski declared today. When asked, he was adamant that net neutrality as seen by the FCC would remain intact. Genachowski wasn't clear on whether this would extend to wireless, whose fate is still undecided, but said it was important to preserve an even competitive field.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Eternity II hitting AT&T in the coming weeks?
You might remember that we'd said back in April that AT&T would be picking up the Sony Ericsson X10 in the 30th week of the year. Well, turns out we weren't exactly right, but it seems we're going to end up being pretty damn close. We're hearing that AT&T is lining up for a launch some time between the middle of August and the middle of September; smartphone data is required, of course, and it'll cost independent dealers $345 per unit (retail pricing is anyone's guess). Android predicted to outrun iPhone by 2012
An aggressive estimate by iSuppli today has Android passing iOS for share by 2012. While Apple still has a comfortable total user base today, Google is accelerating quickly enough that it could claim 75 million active phones by 2012 where Apple would grow to just 62 million. That ratio could widen further in the following two years to where Android would have 22.8 percent share, at over 100 million phones, where iPhones and related devices would shrink in relative share to 15.3 percent.

Google Wave development discontinued, Waveboard sinks
After much public and private debate over its actual utility, Google Wave, as you've probably already heard, is dead. Google posted a notice yesterday announcing that, due to a lack of public acceptance for the realtime collaboration platform, they are halting development. "We don't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product," states Google, "but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects."

Nahezu täglich kommt ein neues Fahrzeug mit alternativen Energien raus, Sonnenenergie ist dabei allerdings - wenn es nicht um Flugzeuge geht - selten im Spiel, noch seltener ist die Kombination Motorrad-Sonnenergie. Robot equipped with hook-like claws and pendulum can climb carpeted walls
ROCR -- the Oscillating Climbing Robot -- was developed at the University of Utah by William Provancher. Its main talent is the ability to climb carpeted walls by using its hook-like claws and is powered by a motor and a pendulum tail that wings like a grandfather clock. Apple on verge of buying China's Handseeing?
Apple is close to buying its first Chinese company, Handseeing Information Technology, a Global Times report claims. An insider source claims that both parties are near a final acquisition price, worth 1 billion yuan, or about $148 million. Dell gearing up 30-inch UltraSharp display with IPS panel
Dell will soon begin shipping a 30-inch monitor with a 10-bit in-plane switching (IPS) panel and a 2560x1600 resolution, leaks have confirmed. The UltraSharp U3011 would have a high-quality panel manufactured by LG that would produce the same 1.07 billion colors as Dell's best screens but would be pre-calibrated from the factory. Mutewatch aims to be a less watch-like watch
Watches that try do something really different aren't exactly all that common, but you can certainly say that about the just-announced Mutewatch. Described as a "silent alarm in the shape of a vibrating wristband," the watch features a hidden screen that activates on touch and lets you swipe to scroll between the timer, clock and alarm -- the latter of which simply vibrates rather than making a sound, and can be dismissed by pinching the watch. iPhone 3GS 8GB to reach China next week with Wi-Fi?
Apple will finally have the option of selling the iPhone 3GS in China with true Wi-Fi, an anonymous China Unicom official leaked out Thursday. Starting next week, the carrier should have the current 8GB model with the wireless feature finally enabled. It's not clear how the phone would be priced, but Apple has usually priced the phone elsewhere at the equivalent of $99 locked or better.

Two more Apple patent applications have been published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The first, Accessing Shopping Center Services Using a Portable Electronic Device, illustrates an iPhone app specifically designed to aid and encourage shopping at malls. Bundesweiter UMTS-Ausfall bei O2
O2 hatte am späten Vormittag mit einer bundesweiten Störung zu kämpfen. Von ihr waren ungefähr 75 Prozent der Kundschaft betroffen. Sie konnten in dieser Zeit UMTS und HSDPA nicht nutzen. Das hat der Mobilfunkbetreiber auf Anfrage von ZDNet bestätigt. Die Störung begann nach Angaben des Unternehmens gegen 10 Uhr 30 und war um 12 Uhr behoben. RIM: BlackBerry censorship is Internet censorship
RIM co-chief Mike Lazaridis in an interview late Wednesday struck back at imminent BlackBerry service bans by drawing the entire industry into the debate. The executive argued that attempts to ban the encrypted e-mail, messaging and web were part of a larger problem with Internet control as a whole and suggested India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries were simply afraid of coping with modern communication. Noch gibt es kein offizielles Foto des iPod Touch der 4. Generation – aber dafür eine Foto-Illustration. Here's good news for iPhone 4 users who've been waiting for a carrier unlock. The iPhone Dev Team has released an update to Ultrasn0w, its iPhone unlocking client, that's compatible with the iPhone 4. When run on an jailbroken iPhone 4, Ultrasn0w will allow you to use a carrier other than AT&T in the US.

Accessory mockup hints at new iPod touch design
A mockup image said to come from a case manufacturer hints at the dimensions -- if not necessarily the features -- of the next iPod touch, according to MacBidouille. The only immediately noticeable difference is the presence of a camera and flash on the back, supporting long-standing rumors that the device will gain closer parity with the iPhone. News: Apple has iOS security fix readied
Apple has already completed a patch that fixes the PDF-related iOS security hole discovered earlier this week. “We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update,” an Apple spokeswoman told Cnet. It is unknown when Apple plans on releasing the update, or if the same update will also alleviate proximity sensor issues for some iPhone 4 users.

At first glance, I thought Chuck Gnome was kind of gimmicky -- haven't we had enough of doodles and birds and cute little characters? But it is a fun little arcade game (I would say try the lite version before you jump in for the full US$1.99). The game has you slingshotting a gnome at various moving targets; it's kind of like a reverse Skee-ball. The twist comes in when you tilt the iPhone. You can move the field of view in a kind of false 3D vision that allows you to see outside of the normal playing field and hit some shots that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Grundig bekommt als bundesrepublikanische Wohnzimmer-Konstante der 80er 70er immer einen Sympathiepunkt, den wasserdichten MP3-Player MPaxx 928 Hydrox wollen wir aber dennoch nicht zu unserem nächsten Tauchausflug mitnehmen. Unter Wasser soll Ruhe herrschen! Außerdem gehen wir generell tiefer ins Wasser als drei Meter und da ist für den Musikplayer auch schon Schluss. 2GB Speicher sind verbaut. Das ist nicht viel, die unterstützten Formate sind mit MP3, WMA und WAV aber auch nicht gerade üppig. 60 Euro kostet die Badewannenhupe, ab Mitte des Monats zu haben.

T-Mobile loses 93,000 customers but triples smartphone base
T-Mobile today reported results that showed a major swing towards smartphones. The company lost 93,000 customers as a whole but more than tripled the number of smartphones on its network in the past year from just 2.1 million last spring to 6.5 million a year later. Many of these were using Android phones like the myTouch 3G Slide, but the success of the HD2 and core devices like the BlackBerry Bold 9700 also played a part.

Google: Jeden Tag werden 200.000 neue Android-Smartphones aktiviert
Alles deutet darauf hin, dass Google mit dem Betriebssystem Android einen Erfolg gelandet hat und diesen auch noch weiter ausbauen kann. Googles CEO Eric Schmidt gab bekannt, dass inzwischen pro Tag 200.000 neue Android-Telefone aktiviert werden. Deutsche Datenschützer warnen vor iPhone-Sicherheitslücken
Das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) rät, zunächst keine PDF-Dokumente mehr auf dem iPhone und dem iPad zu öffnen. Grund dafür ist die Sicherheitslücke, die Anfang der Woche den iPhone-4-Jailbreak ermöglicht hatte. Europäische Kommission mag iPhones

Apple hat diese Woche ein Update für die RAW-Kompatibilität der Mac-OS-X-System-Komponenten veröffentlicht. Das Update ist 6 MB gross und kann entweder via Softwareaktualisierung oder via Apple.com geladen und installiert werden. Durch das Update wird dem System die Kompatibilität mit den RAW-Formaten von 8 weiteren Kameras beigebracht: Canon PowerShot SX1 IS, Olympus E-PL1, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10, Samsung NX10, Sony Alpha DSLR-A390, Sony Alpha NEX-3 und Sony Alpha NEX-5. AOL meldet Milliardenverlust im zweiten Quartal
AOL hat die Zahlen für das zweite Quartal 2010 vorgelegt. Zwischen April und Juli erwirtschaftete das Unternehmen einen Fehlbetrag von 1,05 Milliarden Dollar (800 Millionen Euro). Im Vorjahreszeitraum wies die Bilanz einen Nettogewinn von 90,7 Millionen Dollar aus. Als Grund für den hohen Verlust nennt der Internetkonzern Wertberichtigungen in Höhe von 1,41 Milliarden Dollar (1,07 Milliarden Euro), die aus einem unerwartet niedrigen Kurs der AOL-Aktie und den Verkäufen des Social Network Bebo und den Messaging-Diensts ICQ resultieren.

Apple verteilt dritte Beta von iOS 4.1 & iOS SDK an Entwickler
Für registrierte iPhone-Entwickler hat Apple seit der Nacht von Dienstag auf Mittwoch die dritte Beta-Version vom iOS SDK und iOS 4.1 freigegeben. Der Fokus des Updates liegt auf der AV Foundation, dem Media Player, GameKit, UIKit und MapKit. Innerhalb der letzten drei Wochen sind dadurch bereits drei Beta-Versionen des nächsten Minor-Updates für das iOS erschienen.
Die neue Beta macht vor allem aufgrund der neuen Entwicklungen bezüglich des GameKits bzw. der Game Center App von sich zu reden. Das Game Center wurde eigentlich als eine der grossen Neuheiten in iOS 4 angekündigt, wurde dann aber von Apple auf eine spätere Version verschoben. Nun fehlt in Beta 3 von iOS 4.1 die Unterstützung des Game Centers für das iPhone 3G und iPod touch 2G. Diese beiden Geräte werden also wohl nicht in den Genuss vom Game Center kommen.

Diese Videos stellte Apple danach auf der Antennen-Webseite unter apple.com/antenna mit Informationen über das Apple-eigene Funksignal-Testlabor online.
Am vergangenen Wochenende hat Apple nun die Videos der Konkurrenz-Modelle ohne Ankündigung bzw. Kommentarlos von dieser Webseite entfernt. Die Webseite informiert jetzt nur noch über die «Antenna Design and Test Labs» von Apple.

Apple sucht seit vergangener Woche durch ein Stelleninserat nach einem Software-Entwickler, der Apple dabei hilft, eine «gänzlich neue und revolutionäre» Funktion für künftige Mac-OS-X-Versionen zu entwickeln.
Diese neue, revolutionäre Funktion wird, so kann aus dem Stelleninserat herausgelesen werden, «system-weit» Anwendung finden und wird wohl direkt in der Benutzeroberfläche verfügbar sein. Genaue Daten, bis wann diese neue Funktion fertig sein soll, werden natürlich nicht erwähnt — es kann entsprechend sein, dass diese neue Funktion es vielleicht auch noch nicht in die nächste — als 10.7 gemunkelte — OS-X-Version schafft.
Es wird aktuell breit davon ausgegangen, dass Apple die WWDC 2011 (die wohl irgendwann zwischen Juni und August stattfinden könnte), den Fokus auf Mac OS X legen wird. Es gibt auch Gerüchte, die besagen das Apple künftig zwei verschiedene WWDCs veranstaltet, eine für Mac OS X und eine andere für iOS.

Google now activating 200,000 Android phones per day
Google chief Eric Schmidt at the Techonomy conference revealed that his company is now activating 200,000 Android phones a day. Google and Verizon have come into an agreement as to how network operators can manage Internet traffic, according to sources familiar with their negotiations. Clearwire to run LTE-based 4G trials in fall
Clearwire heightened competition in 4G this evening by saying it would start trials of LTE (Long Term Evolution) late this year. Tests in Phoenix, Arizona will check the viability of service on the existing 2.5GHz band Clearwire uses for WiMAX. The experiment will also check the possibility of dual-mode LTE and WiMAX devices and will often use the same Samsung base station equipment.

Dish to send satellite TV to iPad, other mobile devices
Dish Network has said it will soon let subscribers watch its satellite TV programs on their mobile devices for free. The functionality will arrive for the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and BlackBerry smartphones in September and on Android-powered phones in October. Unless the mobile users have a Dish-compatible, dual-tuner DVR at home, however, they will have to watch whatever channel is set at home.

Snow Leopard Graphics Update seeds to developers
Apple is reportedly seeding a new update to Mac developers, simply called the Snow Leopard Graphics Update. As of build 10F2074, the code weighs in at 65.6MB. Although the exact problems it's supposed to fix are not mentioned, developers are being asked to focus on several areas. These include VRAM use, and problems with hot-plugging and waking from sleep.

Microsoft posts final IE9 preview with high web accuracy
Microsoft today posted the fourth and last Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 9 with its first truly high web accuracy score. The release finally moves the company's new Chakra engine for JavaScript into the browser itself and scores 95 on the historically difficult Acid3 accuracy test. While still short of the perfect scores of Apple's Safari and Google Chrome, the result is roughly on par with Firefox 4 and addresses a longstanding complaint of inaccuracy in IE.

App Star winners announced
The App Star awards are hosted by Appsfire, highlighting up-and-coming apps deserving of more attention. In the second round of awards the winners are: IsoCards, Mixr and LiveRider. We'll have more on these apps in the coming weeks, but here's a rundown:

Time Warner CEO hints at tying print, tablet magazine subscriptions together
We'd already heard that Time Warner was looking to offer magazine subscriptions on the iPad (and running into some difficulty doing so), and it now looks like it might have some even grander plans. As hinted at by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes in an earnings call earlier today, the company is apparently looking at extending its TV Everywhere concept to magazines, which would give customers that subscribe to the print editions of Time, Sports Illustrated and other publications access to the digital version as well. VanDyke launches Mac beta of SecureCRT remote access app
VanDyke has posted a beta version of SecureCRT for Mac OS X. The software is a Terminal client managing secure remote access to channel e-mail, web and corporate data across sites. Mac support comes by way of an early v6.6 release, allowing users to switch between Macs and PCs with the same interface across both platforms. The Mac code includes automation and emulation capabilities, and session management supporting over 5,000 sessions.
