HTC says EVO 4G's 30fps cap on video output can't be increased
Even though we've seen evidence of a hack that circumvents it, we've been able to corroborate a story over at AndroidGuys this week that the HTC EVO 4G's 30fps cap on screen output is a terminal condition -- so says HTC, anyhow. The official story is that the cap was necessitated by the phone's support for HDMI-out, and there's no way the company could craft a software update to nix the limitation. Of course, as usual, we have every faith that the xda-developers community is going to magically take care of this in a way that's easy enough for at least

My trip through Time Capsule Hell leads to a different backup approach
Filed under: HardwareI bought a one terabyte Time Capsule shortly after it hit the market, along with an external 1.5TB drive. I use the Time Capsule's internal drive to back up two smaller capacity Macs, while the external disk backs up my two larger capacity Macs.
Working with Time Machine in Leopard or Snow Leopard, the Time Capsule updates its backups every hour. This makes perfect sense if you're just dealing with one Mac wired into the Time Capsule, since it really doesn't slow anything down. But if you are using it to wirelessly back up multiple Macs, hourly backups slow everything down to a crawl.

Hacker uses Nixie Tubes to make Sudoku interesting
We are far too impatient for games like Sudoku, but we can appreciate a boss hack, such as the one that recently popped up over at Trashbear Labs. This contraption uses Nixie Tubes to solve Sudoku puzzles (with help from a modified version of code provided by Edwin Chan). By far, our favorite part of the contraption is the hardware itself: sort of looks like something from a nuclear submarine, doesn't it? Strike that: it's more like a nuclear fun-marine! Apple patent application details instant product research via iPhone, more NFC possibilities
Past Apple patent applications have already offered some evidence that the company is at least thinking about NFC-enhanced apps on the iPhone, and a recently published application has now tossed out one more possible application: instant product research. Shear-thickening liquid hardens upon impact, makes for lighter and more effective body armor
Scientists at BAE Systems in Bristol, UK have come up with a "shear-thickening" (or dilatant) liquid that can be combined with Kevlar to create a new, more powerful bullet-proof material. Similar to the "body armor" used by some Olympic skiers, shear-thickening material acts as a lubricant at low velocities, but quickly hardens upon impact. Spruce Deuce robot drummer is a fleshbag percussionist's worst nightmare (video)
Sure you can make a drum machine out of Legos, but can you make an actual drummer out of Legos? Steve Averill couldn't, but we think his rather more organic creation is even better than plastic bricks. It's called the Spruce Deuce, a robot that, like the Spruce Goose, is actually made of birch plywood. He's articulated by 11 radio servos tied to a MIDI controller and, amazingly, is pretty good -- or, at least, he isn't bad, able to hit the snare, tom tom, and cymbals. News: 99 cent TV rentals coming to iTunes?
Apple is pushing TV programmers to allow it to rent individual television episodes for 99 cents each, according to a new report. Q3 iPad sales estimates vary
Filed under: Apple FinancialPredicting Apple's sales numbers is always a guessing game. Phillip-Elmer DeWitt notes that, despite Apple announcing the 3 millionth iPad sale 5 days before the quarter ended, this time will be no different.
He's compiled a number of estimates over at Apple 2.0, with an average around the 3 million mark. On the low end of the range is 2.50 million units sold from Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital. Mark Moskowitz of J.P. Morgan is more optimistic with a projection of 3.75 million units sold.

US-Markt: Android gewinnt Marktanteile – Apple fällt zurück

China renews Google's license to host
A little later than anticipated, Google is confirming that China has renewed its ICP license -- the rights one needs to host a site on its own domain in China. Without that Google would certainly be on the outs, but after resuming limited broadcasts there last month there was hope the two global powerhouses would work out their differences. And, it appears they have -- at least to some degree. Eigentlich sollte das iPad-Täschchen vom Luxustaschenhersteller Louis Vuitton im klassischen Monogramm-Muster erst 2011 kommen und eigentlich sollte es 277 Euro kosten. Jetzt gibt es das Teil ganz offiziell auf der Vuitton-Site, allerdings ohne Preis, aber auch bei eBay ist die Statushülle zu haben und zwar für 575 Euro. Warum uns das überhaupt interessiert? Neuer iPod mit 3x3 cm Touchscreen?
Auf einer taiwanesischen Webseite (via Mac Rumors sind Bilder eines 3 auf 3 Zentimeter großen Touchscreens aufgetaucht, der wenn man nach der Beschriftung auf einem Kabel geht, Apple zuzuordnen ist.
Nun stellt sich uns die Frage nach dem Verwendungszweck: Bringt Apple ein weiteres iPod-Modell mit berührungsempfindlichem Bildschirm, erwartet uns ein völlig neues Produkt (z.B. Apple TV II) oder stammt das Teil schlicht aus der Versuchsabteilung und die zugehörigen Ideen wurden längst verworfen (da war doch mal was mit einem Touchscreen als Notebook-Trackpad

Just when we were about to give up hope in ever finding a convenient way to check out Twitter-happenings, some students at the University of Tokyo and Waseda University have come to our rescue. Their bizarre creation is the Kokonatchi, a cuddly, gyrating robot of sorts, much in the vein of Nabaztag, that flashes multicolor LEDs and wiggles in an adorable seizure when you've got a new Tweet to look at. iSuppli warnt vor möglichen Engpässen bei AMOLED-Displays

Der Deutsche Bundestag hat sich am Donnerstagabend hinter das umstrittene Swift-Abkommen (PDF) der EU gestellt. Of all the KIRFs in all the world, this might be one of the laziest. Sure, aesthetically it does a fine job of aping the Leica rangefinder it takes as its "inspiration," but the Likea camera goes downhill very quickly when you move in a little closer. The first thing you'll notice is that, instead of the finely engineered Leica body, this thing is made out of, well, cardboard. IFA 2010: Telekom bringt 3D TV über Entertain, 3D Fussball folgt

Es wurde aber auch Zeit. Es ist bald IFA und da geht es immer auch um Fernseher. Bei der Telekom hat man schon mal die erste - überfällige - Bombe losgelassen. 3D Fernsehen soll ab September via IPTV aka Entertain möglich sein. Allerdings erst mal nur für Video on Demand. Preise sind noch im dunklen. Obendrein ist die Telekom in Verhandlung mit der DFL für die 3D Übertragung der Bundesliga. Was aber schon sicher ist, ist dass die neue "LIGA total!" Konferenzschaltung jetzt mit eigener Konferenzschaltung läuft, bei der man sich aussuchen kann, welche anderen Spiele man via Bild in Bild sehen kann.

Outside of a perhaps too strong resemblance to the Kindle, there was nothing much to fault the iriver Story when we played with it back in January. Its biggest downfall, however, was a lack of wireless connectivity, and iriver is going to rectify that with the new iriver WiFi Story. Nächster iPod Touch kommt angeblich mit 5-Megapixel-Kamera und Facetime
Über die britische Handelskette John Lewis sind vermeintliche Details zur nächsten iPod-Touch-Generation an die Öffentlichkeit geraten. Schon öfter gewundert warum FaceTime eigentlich nur über WiFi funktioniert? Und auch ihr hattet gedacht, dass Apple jetzt die Kamera vorne für andere sperrt? Falsch. Das neue Fring Update beweist, dass man nicht nur mit Nokias, sondern auch mit dem iPhone Videochats über 3G machen kann. Da wird Skype wohl nicht lange auf sich warten lassen, denn sonst laufen wieder die mobilen Kunden weg, denn mit Fring kann man ja auch mit seinen Skype Freunden chatten. Ein Apple Ghetto weniger. ComScore: Android grows US smartphone market share as all others decline

Solar Impulse returns from 24 hour test flight 26 hours later
Rest easy, fans of solar-powered aeuronautics. Captain Piccard's Solar Impulse has safely returned after 26 hours in the air -- powered by nothing but the sun. The four-engine aircraft, which features 12,000 solar cells arranged on its wingspan, reached a height of almost 29,000 feet before touching down at Payerne Airport near Berne, Switzerland today. The next step? The team is going back to the woodshed, with the hope of developing a plane that will circumnavigate the globe by 2013.

HTC files seemingly confirm Mondrian, Mozart to be Windows Phone 7 handsets
We'd already had some indication that both the HTC Mondrian and Mozart would be Windows Phone 7 handsets, and it looks like that has now been all but confirmed by HTC itself. Want some FaceTime but on 3G? There's an app called Fring for that

Hey if you need to make video calls (and who doesn't, really?), we're told that Fring just updated their 3G calling app to include 3G video calling, which means that you can make two-way video calls in either 3G or Wi-Fi.
The new update also includes support for multi-tasking in iOS 4, as well as a "smarter" address book, and a social stream that combines updates from services like Twitter and Facebook along with your chats all in one place.
