Droid 2 root method finds its way online
The very first line of the forum post on xda-developers says it best -- proceed at your own risk -- but if you've been kept up at night waiting for root to be gained on Verizon's recently-released Droid 2, it looks like your day has come. The process involves tethering up to your PC and transferring a couple binaries, but seems straightforward enough and should open the door to surcharge-free tethering and other apps that require root access. We've no doubt Motorola will be looking to patch this up with the next OTA push, of course, so update carefully from here on out.

Firefox 4 may be Intel-only on Macs
Mozilla will probably cut off Firefox's PowerPC support past v3.6, according to the company's director for the browser, Mike Beltzner. "I am gathering data on the number of PPC users we have, but the likely outcome is that we will not be supporting PPC [PowerPC] for Firefox 4," he writes in a mailing list post. The root of the problem is said to be two new features in Firefox 4, beginning with out-of-process plugins, which can prevent the program as a whole from crashing when something like Flash becomes unstable. Apple lädt zum Special Event am 1. September
Apple hat heute Abend uns und diverse andere Medien zu einem Special Event am 1. September eingeladen. Das schon traditionelle September-Special-Event findet auch in diesem Jahr im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco statt und beginnt um 10 Uhr Ortszeit (19 Uhr MESZ). Nach dem Thema der Einladung — eine akustische Gitarre mit dem Apple-Logo — dürfte der Fokus des Special Events auf der Musik liegen. Erwartet werden allgemein neue Generationen der iPod-Modelle (touch, classic, shuffle) und auch ein neues Apple-TV ist heiss im Gespräch. Gleichzeitig könnten am kommenden Mittwoch auch Neuheiten betreffend iTunes und vor allem dem iTunes Store um ihre Gunst werben.
Natürlich werden wir am Mittwoch, 1. September wie gewohnt über unseren macprime.ch LiveTicker live von den Geschehnissen aus Kalifornien berichten.

Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series
Sony's finally taken the wraps off its latest televisions for the US market, carrying the NX810 model number. Available in 60-, 55- and 46-inch sizes next month, these give a 3D spec bump (and around a $200 premium on the MSRP) to the existing NX800 series of Edge LED lit HDTVs that came out earlier this year. CheckUp 2.7 adds interface improvements, system support
App4mac has posted CheckUp 2.7, an upgrade to its Mac monitoring utility. The program detects common problems found on a Mac, and displays both the details and a solution. New iPad case will offer hard shell, built-in keyboard
A recent FCC filing has revealed an upcoming iPad case with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard. With an iPad installed, it'll look and behave more like a traditional laptop, for better or worse.
Since this case includes a wireless keyboard, it must meet with FCC approval, and that's how it was discovered. Though it's less fun that this homemade version in my opinion, the case features a built-in keyboard and angled mount for the iPad itself. Dual-core Atom-powered Gigabyte and Lenovo netbooks up for sale in Australia

SwitchEasy is adding to its line of iPhone accessories with the release of the Reptile for the iPhone 4. AT&T unafraid of lost iPhone exclusive, sees $1,000 tablets
AT&T doesn't expect any problems or changes of strategy when it loses its iPhone exclusivity, the company's Emerging Devices head Glenn Lurie argued today. The executive believed AT&T would still be "plugging along" without changing its plans and would still be as successful as before. He wouldn't confirm to Bloomberg when AT&T's exclusivity ends, although most unofficial if credible sources have put a Verizon iPhone in January.

A barrel of free books from Kaplan makes a great back-to-school haul
Kaplan Publishing is offering quite a few free eBooks through the iTunes store, but you can only access them on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. It's a great deal if you're heading back to school or just want to stock up on some quality reference material.
The books are in the categories of college prep, graduate studies, law, medicine, nursing and education. The book are free from now until August 30.
Kaplan first became well known to students preparing for SAT and other exams such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT and many others. The company then expanded into publishing on many education topics.

Garmin recalls 1.25 million navigation units due to potential fire hazard
GPS recalls haven't been nearly as common as some other battery-related recalls in recent years, but Garmin has now been hit with a fairly big one -- it's voluntarily recalling some 1.25 million nuvi units due to an overheating issue that could pose a fire hazard. The recall affects certain nuvi 200W, 250W, 260W, and 7xx models that use batteries from an unnamed third-party supplier and a specific PCB design, which Garmin says can "in rare circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating." Filerr 1.0 detects incompatible filenames on Mac
An independent developer has announced Filerr, a new Mac app. The program runs as a Menu Bar icon, and lets users locate and change the names of files in Finder so they can be copied to Windows computers and USB drives, as well as cloud services like Jungle Disk and Dropbox. When incompatible filenames are created, the app produces a warning along with a Growl notification.

Netgear today brought out a pair of new media sharing hubs as well as its powerline networking hardware. The NeoTV 350 and 550 together take both on-device and local network sources. iPhone 4 sets texting speed record, beats Samsung Galaxy S
This just in from the "bragging about marginally useful skills" department. This week, Salford, UK-based Melissa Thompson set a "texting speed record" on her Samsung Galaxy S by typing two sentences in 25.94 seconds. The sentences in question were: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human." Note that Melissa used a Swype keyboard on the Galaxy.

App review: 720tube
Apple loves to tout the HD video recording and editing capabilities of its new iPhone 4. Shoot.Edit.Share, says the slogan. Unfortunately, something nasty happens between the shooting and YouTube sharing: compression. Apple squashes your magical 720p memory into a rather glum looking 360p video just as soon as you select "Send to YouTube." And there's no easy way around it. Panasonic's DMC-FZ35 (aka the FZ38 in some regions) was highly regarded in its time -- which was all of a year ago. Google adds real phone calls to Gmail
Google today added Gmail phone calls to its existing pure Internet voice and video. The option supports placing a call to a conventional phone number, either from existing contacts or to a new number. It integrates with Google Voice and will show that number on caller ID as well as take calls sent to the same number.

iTV to be a minor part of Sept. announcements?
Contrary to some expectations, the iTV set-top will only play a small part at an Apple press event in September, a source for BusinessWeek claims. The company is instead expected to place the emphasis on 99-cent TV show rentals, with the idea that people can watch them on iPads, iPhones and iPods. iTunes U breaks 300 million downloads
iTunes U lets students (or anyone, really) listen in on lectures, classes and other programs from the world's top educational institutions. In fact, more than 800 universities participate, and this week Apple announced the delivery of 300 million iTunes U downloads.
Students can use iTunes U to find lectures and other materials related to their studies, of course, but really anyone with an interest in continued education can browse the store's contents for audio or video that meets their areas of interest. Google introduces Voice in Gmail, free calls to US and Canada
Rumors have been buzzing about since June, but Google just made it official -- the company's baking Google Voice calls right into Gmail today. Like the Google Chat text, voice and video chat integrated into the web-based email client last year, full phone calls will also be an option. Google's demoing the service for us in San Francisco this morning, and it's looking like it's not free, but fairly cheap -- a product manager just called Paris for $0.02 a minute. Incoming calls pop up as a chat window in Gmail (and ring your Google Voice-equipped phones simultaneously) and you press a "Call phone" button that appears near the top of the Chat window to send an outbound call, at which point a dialer appears where you can copy/paste numbers or tap them in manua

Succumbing to user requests, Google has created a mobile website for its Google Finance data that can be accessed by Android and iPhone users. This includes real time quotes and data, charts and reports, and nearly mimics the desktop interface and content. The association in charge of Japanese sumo wrestling is handing out iPads to its wrestlers, Reuters reports. Being able to combine the best of both worlds is something of a shanzhai strong suit. Unfortunately, we don't see conjuring up a Droid with Windows Mobile 6.5 as the best of both worlds. iPad to control tablet market through at least 2012
The iPad should keep a majority hold on the tablet market for at least the next two years, iSuppli said in a new estimate today. Apple's slate should get 74.1 percent of the market in 2010 and is still predicted to hold on to a dominating 61.7 percent of the market by 2012. Microsoft's gotten a little carried away with its Internet Explorer 9 excitement and posted an early screenshot of the browser up on its Russian site. The post and the image have since been diligently pulled, but not before Mary-Jo Foley managed to snag the pictorial evidence. What's new to see? A resoundingly minimal interface, that's what. The Chrome comparisons should be raining down thick and heavy if this snapshot is anything to go by, as Microsoft has done a fine job of ridding its browser from pesky menus, consolidated its controls into a few icons in the top right, and combined the search and address bars into one. So richtig haben wir das nicht kapiert, aber das soll wohl auch genauso sein: Das Modelabel Bless, bekannt für Eskapaden aller Art, hat eine iPhone-Hülle namens iStone ausgetüftelt, die nichts kann, außer schwer zu sein und dabei wie ein Stein auszusehen. Wenn sie wenigstens einen Extra-Akku statt des Ballasts eingebaut hätten aber solche Einwürfe gelten eben nicht in der Mode/Kunst-Welt. Was das Teil kostet, bleibt ebenfalls unklar, aber billig wird es schon nicht sein.

Patentstreit: HTC reicht erneut Gegenklage gegen Apple ein
HTC hat auf eine weitere Patentklage von Apple erneut mit einer Gegenklage reagiert, wie Groklaw berichtet. Der taiwanische Smartphone-Hersteller bestreitet, Apples Rechte verletzt zu haben. Vier der beanstandeten Patente seien zudem ungültig und die Ansprüche aus verfahrenstechnischen Gründen abzuweisen, heißt es in der Klageschrift (PDF). Vinyl+ degradiert den Plattenspieler zum Effekt-Gimmick

Der Designer Jonas Bohatsch hat ein System namens Vinyl+ ausgetüftelt, dass auf den ersten Blick vielversprechend aussieht: Durchs Regulieren des Tempos, Scratchen und Umsetzen der Nadel auf dem Vinyl werden gleichzeitig Sound- und Lichteffekte gesteuert, wobei letztere wiederum auf die Platte projiziert werden. Auf den zweiten Blick enttäuscht die Installation leider, da hier mitnichten Schallplatten zum Steuern externer Effekte genutzt werden, sondern schlicht eine Timecode-Scheibe, womit der Plattenspieler zum Effekt-Gimmick verkommt. Bloomberg: Apple press event on Sept. 7
Yesterday, Bloomberg published a story about Apple's alleged plan to rent television shows through iTunes and, we assume, the Apple TV. The cost would be US$0.99, which is half off the purchase price of $1.99.
Bloomberg also mentioned that Apple will hold a press event on September 7th. That's likely, as Apple has refreshed the iPod line every year in September since its launch. Additionally, the "Buy a Mac, get an iPod touch for free" promo that Apple is currently running for students expires on September 7th. So expect new iPods.

Apple still debating native apps for iTV, says analyst
There is still "some debate" at Apple as to what kind of apps the rumored Apple TV successor -- the iTV -- will run, according to sources quoted by Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. The device is expected to run iOS, and use an ARM-based processor like the iPad and the iPhone 4. Yahoo zeigt in Nordamerika nun Ergebnisse von Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing. Damit tritt ein 10-Jahres-Abkommen zwisschen Yahoo und Microsoft in Kraft: Microsoft liefert Suchergnisse, Yahoo nutzt dafür die AdCenter-Werbeplattform des Windows-Herstellers. Microsoft sponsert auch iPhone-Apps, um die Bing-Suche bekannter zu machen.

Britische Xbox 360-Werbung wird aus dem Fernsehen verbannt, weil sie auf PS3-Bildmaterial zurückgreift

Die britische Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) hat eine Xbox 360-Werbung zu Final Fantasy XIII vom dortigen Fernsehen verbannt (wo sie allerdings sowieso nicht mehr läuft, weil das Spiel schon zu lange draussen ist). Die Behörde ging Hinweisen nach, dass in einer Werbung für die Xbox 360 Bildmaterial von der PS3 eingesetzt wurde. Nach einem Vergleich der beiden Versionen kam die ASA zum Schluss, dass auf der PS3 "die Videosequenzen schärfer und die Farben lebendiger waren" als auf der Xbox 360 - so wie im fraglichen Werbespot. iPod touch Bauteile der nächsten Generation in China bereits erhältlich
Steve Jobs war damals ja nicht sonderlich erfreut darüber als das iPhone4 in einer Bar "verloren" wurde und im Netz überall aufgetaucht ist. Nicht ganz so schlimm, aber genauso wenig erfreut wird er darüber sein, dass in China nun Bauteile des (höchstwahrscheinlich) kommenden iPod touch online verkauft werden. Darauf lässt auch das Apple-Brading schließen. Hier sieht man das Front-LCD-Panel und interessant zu sehen ist, dass es ein Kameraloch in der Front hat. WiiFit soll bei Leistungssportlern Kopfverletzungen diagnostizieren
Das WiiFit Board ist nicht nur was fürs Wohnzimmer. Zwei College Football Teams in den USA haben die Technologie nun dazu eingeführt, um zu testen, ob die Spieler unter Gehirnerschütterungen oder anderen ähnlichen Verletzungen leiden. Dazu werden auf dem Board, Balancetests u.a. durchgeführt. Dieses "Force Plate"-Prinzip gibt es im Leistungssport seit längeren, nur dass die Geräte bislang mehrere Zehntausend Dollar kosten konnten. So sieht Gaming-Demokratie dann also auch aus. Die beiden Teams seien mit der Wii-Diagnostik bislang sehr zufrieden.

Britische Frau bricht Handyschnelltipp-Rekord, Swype hilft dabei
Eine britische Frau hat just den Rekord im Schnelltexten auf einem Handy gebrochen. Melissa Thompson hat den Satz "'the razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human" in 25,94 Sekunden tippen können und unterbot damit um 9,6 Sekunden den bislang bestehenden Rekord eines Amerikaners. Thompson benutzte hierfür ein Samsung Galaxy S mit Swype, was ihr den nötigen Vorsprung verschaffte. Schafft Swype also doch einen Vorteil gegenüber QWERTZ? Das Guinnessbuch der Rekorde muss nun noch den Rekord absegnen.

Von LG ist nun das zweite Windows Phone 7-Modell aufgepoppt, das den Namen E900 WP7 trägt. Damit reiht es sich in die erste Reihe von neuen Windows-Handys, die es bislang zu sehen gab, nach dem Samsung i917, HTC Schubert und dem C900 von LG. iPhone Sticker macht obszöne Wortspiele (versehentlich)
Da haben die Herrschaften von Amazingcallings mal nicht so super aufgepasst, als sie in ihrem Hongkonger Headquarter auf die dufte Idee kamen, die Rückseite des iPhone 4 mit einem Fakepromianruf per Aufkleber zu versehen. Diese fulminante Geschäftsidee lässt aus einem US-Expräsidenten mal schnell einen Cliton werden. Klingt ja irgendwie komisch und anrüchig. Der Rest der Sticker ist nämlich fernab aller Noklaismen auf dem ersten Blick richtig geschrieben. Riecht nach Konspiration.

Passiert sowas wirklich? Oder ist das Video, in dem Samsungs kommendes Galaxy Tab mit 7-Zoll-Displayin Aktion zu sehen ist, einfach zu gut, um wahr zu sein? Pocketnow.com hat ein Video gepostet, das den in Windows Phone 7 kommenden Internet Explorer mit den Browsern unter Froyo und iOS verglichen. Es handelt sich zwar noch nicht um die fertige Software und auch die Hardware ist nur zum Testen da, aber es sieht trotzdem schon recht gut aus für den Windows Phone 7 Browser, der gelegentlich sogar schneller ist als die Konkurrenz. ExciteBike kam Mitte der 80er auf dem NES raus, wir haben die C64-Version noch in guter 8-Bit-Erinnerung und wissen daher: Motocross kann auch in 2D ein echter Killer sein, jedenfalls auf dem Graustufen-Bildschirm, der damals bevorzugt ein gebrauchter Schwarzweiß-Fernseher war. Justin Harder hat diese Erinnerung offensichtlich keine Ruhe gelassen, denn er hat das Motorrad aus dem Game aus Holzpixeln nachgebaut. Cappuccino-Synth nutzt rotierenden Kram als Oszilator

Toshiba soll 3D-Fernseher mit der brillenlosen Multi-Parallax-Technik in der Pipeline haben

Nach einem japanischen Agenturbericht plant Toshiba noch in diesem Jahr drei 3D-Fernseher mit der Multi-Parallax-Technik auf den Markt zu bringen. Die 3D-TVs funktionieren ohne Spezialbrillen, ähnlich wie wir es bei Nintendos 3DS gesehen haben. Toshiba hat ein entsprechendes 21-Zoll-Panel bereits im April vorgestellt (im Bild oben), zu den jetzt gerüchteweise avisierten 3D-Glotzen weiß die AP nur noch zu berichten, dass sie jeweils "mehrere Tausend Dollar" kosten sollen. Mehr Bilder und erste Eindrücke: Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 mit Android 2.2

Und nochmal Samsungs Galaxy Tab, diesmal fotografiert und augenscheinlich auch kurz ausprobiert von einem Informanten von ifanr aus China. Die Modellnummer ist GT-P1000 und das Tab läuft natürlich auf Android 2.2 aka Froyo. Der erste Eindruck scheint, ähnlich wie beim Galaxy S, ein bisschen plastikmässig zu sein, dafür ist es aber deutlich leichter als zum Beispiel das iPad. Das ist eine Funktion, nach der wir schon länger gesucht haben und uns immer wieder wunderten, warum noch keiner auf die Idee gekommen ist: ein Gerät, dass den Loudnesswar zwischen Werbung und normalem Fernsehen beendet, so dass man nicht immer von der Werbung getollschockt wird, sobald sie anfängt. Genau das tut der GefenTV Auto Volume Stabilizer, er sorgt für konstante Lautstärke auch bei großen Pegelsprüngen. Wie das klingt wissen wir leider nicht, allerdings ist der Preis mit 179 Dollar (ca. 128 Euro) für diese eine Funktion auch ganz schön happig.

Stickybot klebt und klettert nach Geckoart (mit Video)

Seit nunmehr vier Jahren arbeiten sie an der Stanford University nun am Sticky Bot, der einem Gecko nachempfunden ist und ebenso an glatten Oberflächen hochlaufen kann, ohne abzustürzen. Die ersten Versuche waren noch etwas wackelig, aber jetzt scheint es gut zu funktionieren, wie ihr im Video nach dem Break sehen könnt. Wichtig für Gleichgewicht und Klebekraft ist auch der Schwanz, ohne den der Sticky Bot abstürzen würde.

Kommt Sharps neuer E-Reader mit 3D-Display?

Sharp wird seinen brandneuen E-Reader diesen Herbst in Japan rausbringen, Ende des Jahres soll er dann auch in die USA kommen. Das klingt jetzt noch nicht allzu spannend, aber Sharps Präsident Mikio Katayama macht es ein bisschen interessanter, indem er sagt, dass das Gerät "Konkurrenz fürs iPad " sein und wahrscheinlich auch mit Farb-LCD Display kommen wird, aber was dann wirklich die Sache interessant machen könnte ist 3D. Toughbook CF-U1 wird geschüttelt und geplättet (mit Video)

So langsam dürfte es schwer werden für Panasonic, immer neue Arten zu finden, wie man das Toughbook noch martialischer malträtieren kann, jetzt ist es (in dem Fall das Toughbook CF-U1) auf einen Plätter geschnallt, spielt dabei problemlos ein Video ab und zu guter letzt wird es auch noch aus dem darunterliegenden Boden gepult, kurz abgestaubt und gleich benutzt. Apple Media Event am 7. September: neuer iPod Touch, Apple TV?

Laut Bloomberg wird Apple am 7. September ein Media Event abhalten, bei dem der neue iPod Touch und das neue Apple TV gelauncht werden sollen. iPod Touch - Ersatzteile sind bereits bei den Reparaturbetrieben eingetroffen (Video nach dem Break) und bieten wie erwartet ein Loch im Gehäuse, das wahrscheinlich von einer Facetime Kamera ausgefüllt werden wird. Ansonsten wird es zumindest in den USA den neuen TV-Rental Service geben, bei dem man sich eine Folge einer Serie für 99 Cent ausleihen kann.

Neue iPods und neues Apple TV am 7. September?
Seit vielen Jahren hat es Tradition, dass Apple seine alljährliche iPod-Aktualisierung jeweils auf einem Special Event im September vornimmt. Bloomberg zufolge plant Apple einen entsprechenden Event für den 7. September in San Francisco. Bei neuen iPods ist kaum mit Überraschungen zu rechnen. In den Genuss der grössten Neuerungen dürfte vermutlich der iPod touch kommen, die Rede ist von A4-Prozessor, Retina-Display, Gyroskop, und Facetime-Kamera.
Interessanter könnte jedoch die Einführung einer runderneuerten Apple-TV-Generation sein. Apple TV soll künftig mit weniger Speicher auskommen und nur noch 99 Dollar kosten. Besitzt die aktuelle Version noch einen Intel-Chip und ein abgespecktes OS-X-Betriebssystem, soll Apple TV künftig von einem ARM-Prozessor (wie auch das iPhone und der iPod touch) betrieben werden und iOS als Betriebssystem nutzen. Wie AppleInsider berichtet, wird es künftig möglich sein, über den App Store auch Apps für Apple TV zu beziehen.

Yeah, it's iPAD, not iPad, for this dock. PhotoFast's iPADock can be configured to handle dual iPads, four iPhones, or two iPhones and one iPad, thanks to its modular design. Of course, you have to thread your own iPad or iPhone charging cables through the dock, and then jack into one of the plentiful powered USB plugs in the back (three regular, four power-only), but that's only a minor detail. Sharp sees its tablets competing with iPad, getting 3D
Sharp President Mikio Katayama late Tuesday told Japan's Kyodo News that his company's upcoming tablets should compete with the iPad. Although initially positioned as e-readers, their color touchscreens give them multi-role functions Katayama believed could challenge Apple. Project Sanctuary is one of the best dual-stick shooters I've seen on the App Store yet. It's quick and responsive, and it's got a surprisingly solid back-end, which includes four different characters to choose from, multiple game modes and settings, and even an in-game talent tree where you can specialize your characters and weapons as necessary in order to bring the best fight that you can. The game has a serviceable storyline, but the action here is all about shooting, moving, and using power-ups and weapons to take down as many enemies as possible.

Panasonic's RP-HC700 headphones cancel a whole lotta noise
We can't say they're the most stylish noise cancelling headphones we've ever seen (far from it, actually), but Panasonic's RP-HC700 sure do cancel out an awful lot of unwanted sine waves. In fact, these retro-inspired cans nix 95 percent of surrounding noise, and they'll also ship in both black and white hues for somewhat obvious reasons. Other specs include 40mm drivers, a 10Hz to 30kHz frequency range and 15 hours of noise cancelling with a single AAA battery. Samsung texting record already trumped by iPhone 4 user
Samsung was dealt a blow today as it lost a text messaging record that had been set just hours earlier to an iPhone 4 user. Salford, UK-based Melissa Thompson had beaten a previous texting record by typing two sentences in 25.94 seconds on a Galaxy S, but El Paso, Texas-based Brian Sweet proved that he had already beaten the record and posted a video (below) as evidence. He typed the message in 21.8 seconds using the stock iPhone 4 keyboard, even after having to start the timer himself and with virtually no use of auto-correction.

Apple is planning to open two new retail stores on Saturday, August 28th. The first is based in Nice, France, specifically at the Cap 3000 commercial center on Avenue Eugene Donadei. AMD details future Bulldozer, Bobcat processor cores
AMD at the Hot Chips conference today provided insight into the details of its Bulldozer and Bobcat processor platforms. Bulldozer is aimed at performance users and focuses on a new design with distinct but very modular processor cores. Corporate iPad intake continues thanks to low obstacles
The iPad is still being rapidly adopted by corporations past early phases, notes the Wall Street Journal. One given example is Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, a major Chicago lawfirm, which initially pre-ordered 10 iPads but now has over 50 lawyers using the tablet; in 2011, an iPad will be available as an alternative to a notebook. Windows 95 marks 15th birthday in uncertain Microsoft future
Microsoft reached a milestone today as Windows 95 reached the 15th anniversary of its launch on August 24, 1995. The OS was the highest-profile debut ever for Microsoft and saw rare lines for a software launch; media reports from the period had some lining up without knowing what Windows 95 did. Its launch campaign included an ad blitz with the Rolling Stones song "Start Me Up" and ultimately saw Microsoft spend $300 million on marketing, a feat it wouldn't repeat until years later.

Barnes & Noble thrives on Nook, struggles in retail
Barnes & Noble today highlighted its problems in the digital space by reporting mixed results. Although it wouldn't give numbers, it claimed Nook sales were "nothing short of spectacular" and said sales had only grown since it launched the Nook Wi-Fi and cut the price of the Nook 3G. Apple supply manager caught with over $150,000 in cash
US federal agents found over $150,000 in cash -- stored in shoeboxes -- when searching the house of Apple supply manager Paul Shin Devine, says IDG News. The information was brought out by prosecutors at a Monday court hearing, where it was also revealed that Devine had approximately $20,000 in foreign currency in his home. Fox, others rumored in talks for 99-cent iTunes TV rentals
Leaks of 99-cent iTunes TV show rentals gained credibility on Tuesday as a new source claimed that Apple is deeper into negotiations. Apple's ongoing discussions for 99-cent iTunes TV rentals were given support today by a pair of sources Tuesday evening. Anonymous contacts told the WSJ this evening that Disney was the closest to a deal and could agree to allowing some ABC shows soon. It must be getting pretty difficult at this point for Panasonic to come up with new ways to show just how tough its Toughbook line of devices are, but it looks like the company's still got a few surprises in it, as evidenced by a new video that pits its Toughbook CF-U1 handheld against a Rammer. Gerücht: Apple-Event am 7. September
Wie das Nachrichtennetzwerk Bloomberg berichtet, will Apple am 7. September in San Francisco ein Presse-Event abhalten. Apple veröffentlicht Sicherheitsupdate 2010-005
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute das «Sicherheitsupdate 2010-005» für Mac OS X Snow Leopard und Mac OS X Leopard veröffentlicht. Das Update beseitigt eine Reihe von Sicherheitslücken und kann unter Mac OS X 10.6.4 sowie 10.5.8 via Software-Aktualisierung oder von apple.com geladen werden. Unter anderem wird ein grösseres Sicherheitsleck in den ATS (Apple Type Services) behoben. Das gut 80 MB grosse Update benötigt nach erfolgter Installation einen Neustart des Macs.

LG's C900 Windows Phone 7 handset for AT&T gets FCC approval
If you wade through LG's alphabet soup of upcoming WinPho 7 goodies, you might recall that several of them seem to be headed directly for AT&T later this year. Evidence for one of them in particular -- the C900 landscape slider -- just got a little stronger this evening on news that a phone by the very same model code has just been hooked up with FCC approval in the past few hours. Former Apple manager accused of hiding $125k in shoeboxes
Back when I was a kid, I kept my most valuable possessions, my baseball and basketball card collection, in a shoe box. Apparently, so too did former Apple employee Paul Devine. Devine is accused of wire fraud and conspiracy on the basis that he collected more than $2.5 million in kickbacks from Apple's suppliers. And during their investigation, officials found $125,000 stored away in shoe boxes at his home, as well as more than $20,000 worth of foreign currency. Prosecutors also allege that Devine may have other sources of cash.

iTunes TV show rentals for 99 cents may be on the way
Here's another rumor about the new Apple TV (or "iTV" as some are calling it), which may be in the cards for the upcoming Apple event in two weeks.
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is in advanced talks with several media outlets to offer TV show rentals through iTunes for 99 cents an episode. Each episode would be made available within 24 hours of the episode's airing on television, allowing one to essentially rent the episode for 48 hours, commercial-free.
This isn't such a huge surprise, really, though it does strongly support the

iPad app dev sees 50% piracy rate
We've heard horror stories of piracy from iPhone developers before, but PocketGamer has news of an iPad developer also suffering from a surprising amount of customers who likely didn't actually pay for their software. Qwiboo says that its iPad app, Aqua Globs HD, is seeing about 50% of its customers on the OpenFeint leaderboards have obtained the app illegally. Vladimir Roth says that the number of users who have actually submitted an OpenFeint score is double the number of legitimately sold apps so far.

Marvell's been teasing potent little processors for over a year now, but we've yet to see the firm's Armada appear in anything we'd actually want but co-founder Sehat Sutardja just let slip that Marvell silicon will power a genuine game console of some sort. When you go to the movies, you see ads, when you watch TV and browse the Internet, there are ads everywhere. But why don't you see ads while reading a book?
