PPC Macs 'likely' to be unsupported by Firefox 4
While it may not come as much of a surprise, it's still going to aggravate owners of aging PPC Macs that the upcoming Firefox 4 browser is probably going to drop support for the older architecture. Mozilla program manager Mike Beltzner noted that the next version of the open-source browser, currently in beta, is not working on PowerPC machines now and the update will not be automatically offered to them.

Altona ships KVM extender with Wireless USB
Atlona this week revealed that its AT-PCLink Wireless USB KVM switch is now shipping. The device works with Macs and PCs to wirelessly send DVI, USB and stereo audio signals up to 30 feet away using the Ultra Wide Band (UWB) standard. News: Virgin Mobile announces $40 unlimited data plan
Virgin Mobile has announced a new $40 unlimited monthly data plan, which, when combined with a $150 Mi-Fi mobile hotspot, provides an attractive option for iPad and iPod touch users. Third Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta narrows down to one known issue
Apple today provided a third beta seed of Mac OS X 10.6.5 to developers, 10H531. The code is said to have just one known issue remaining, that being VMware. If the company's virtualization software is installed, it can potentially stop USB devices from working when a Mac emerges from sleep mode. Developers are otherwise being asked to focus testing on several areas, such as iCal, Mail, QuickTime, Time Machine and 3D rendering.

News: MPEG LA: H.264 will remain royalty free
MPEG LA has announced (PDF Link) that its AVC/H.264 video codec will remain royalty-free for Internet video that is free to end-users throughout the life of the license. The group had previously said it would not charge any such royalties through the end of 2015. Royalty-free H.264 is a big win for HTML5, big loss for Flash
So far, one of the main arguments against widespread implementation of HTML5 video has been the uncertain licensing future of the H.264 standard. Proponents of Flash video and organizations committed to license-free software, like the Mozilla foundation, said that while H.264 was currently royalty-free (and would remain so until 2015), there was no guarantee that MPEG LA wouldn't start charging licensing fees later on.

LG putting 9.7-inch color, 19-inch flexible e-paper displays into production
LG's shown off plenty of display prototypes that may or may not ever wind up in actual products, but it looks like two of them are about to get real -- a recent SEC filing has revealed that LG is expecting to put both a 9.7-inch color e-paper display and a 19-inch flexible e-paper display into mass production by the end of the year. News: Facebook clarifies: 44 million iOS users, not 100+

iWork Update 9.0.4 brings ePub file support to Pages, fixes bugs
A new update to iWork is providing some fixes to bugs (primarily with tables) in Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, but also provides a new export option that makes Pages documents compatible with iBooks.
The iWork 9.0.4 update is recommended for anyone using iWork 9.0 - 9.0.3. The fixes for Keynote include patching an issue that occurred when printing handouts with rule lines, resolving a problem with the slide switcher, and also fixes an issue when automatically resizing some images when changing the size of a slide.

JooJoo software update adds local video playback and password storage, still a few months too late
It's baaaack. Okay, it never really went anywhere, but thanks to a very nice tipster we learned that Fusion Garage released a new software update for the JooJoo last night. The new 0.2.4 firmware, as you can see from the shot above, adds a few previously-lacking features such as the ability to store passwords, calibrate the screen, and basic USB support. Obviously, we couldn't help but whip out our JooJoo review unit and try it all out. The download didn't take more than three minutes and, lo' and behold, we were able to log into Twitter, close the browser, and then launch it again without hav

Facebook numbers revised: 44 million iOS app users, not 104 million
A few days ago, Facebook divulged the number of users of its mobile apps. Droid Pro is the global Droid 2: the evidence grows
We'd reported before our belief that the rumored Droid Pro is nothing more than the dual-mode version of the Droid 2, but the question remained: knowing that the Droid 2 has a model code of A955, what the heck is the difference between the model codes A956 and A957 that have been showing up in Verizon's systems? Briefly: 5-in-1 iPad case, Fishdom HD in the works
A new Brenthaven product, the 5-in-1 iPad Case, is now shipping. The name stems from five different functions. It can for instance be used as a two-sided hard-shell case, a typing stand, or a horizontal viewing stand; a strap allows handholding, or else securing an iPad to a car seat's headrest. Google still scrounging for music store leader
Google is still searching for an executive to head up its Google Music service, a rumor contended this afternoon. The search giant has talked to multiple "digital media executives," sources mentioned to AllThingsD, but hasn't yet found someone it would like to lead the music store. Google hadn't commented on the claims at press time.

Movies rented with iPhone 4 won't transfer to iTunes
iLounge is reporing this week that movies rented from the iTunes Store with an iPhone 4 cannot be transferred to iTunes for viewing on other Apple devices. Which means you can only watch that movie on the iPhone 4 used to rent it.
This has been the case with the iPad and the Apple TV. As the iTunes Store terms and conditions points out, movies rented "using the Apple TV or iPad may not be moved." So this isn't unprecedented, and it is mentioned on page 99 of Apple's iPhone User Guide for iOS 4 Software (

Supposed next-gen iPod touch, nano / shuffle cases surface online
Stop us if you've heard this one before -- an Apple event is looming, and suddenly some cases turn up online that seem to nicely line up with the devices rumored to be announced. These latest examples come courtesy of Chinese case retailer X-Doria, and include a case for what appears to be a 4th-gen iPod touch with a camera, and one that's described as a case for a "nano 6G," but could seemingly also be for a new iPod shuffle with a touchscreen. Top Gun 2 für iPhone und iPod Touch erschienen

Following a long wait, Apple has at last scheduled grand openings for the first two Apple Stores in Spain. Launching on September 4th at 10AM is the La Maquinista outlet, situated in Barcelona. Normal operating hours are scheduled for 10AM to 10PM Monday through Saturday.

MPEG-LA declares free H.264 video permanently royalty-free
The MPEG-LA video standards group today revised its AVC License to permanently exempt free H.264 and AVC video Internet use from any royalties. It had previously planned to start charging companies for streaming H.264 at the start of 2016 but now will allow free use indefinitely as long as viewers aren't charged. Paid video, as well as corporate use of offline video, will still carry a licensing cost.

DataLore 1.1 file search software gets better UI, more speed
XtraLean Software has updated its file search software, DataLore 1.1. The Spotlight front-end software offers search as you type with filtering, and can search multiple Macs on a local network. It supports Boolean and wildcard queries, date ranges and file-type searching. DataLore runs as an application and a menu-bar item that controls access between Macs on a network.

Sony execs talk PlayStation Move expectations, PS4 details
The PlayStation Move is now less than a month from hitting stores shelves, and it looks like some Sony execs are already busy starting to manage expectations. No jailbreak for you, 4.0.2
The Dev-Team has announced that there will be no jailbreak for iOS 4.0.2 or 3.2.2. It stands to reason, as the release did absolutely nothing other than patch the security hole that was using as an exploit. It's also not a big surprise, minor updates are regularly skipped over. So, if you're a "jailbreaker" and would like to keep it that way, just don't update to 4.0.2. You won't be missing out on anything.

Qualcomm hiring iPhone developer in possible CDMA bid
A discovery today suggests Qualcomm has quietly begun hiring for what could be a deeper commitment to a CDMA iPhone. A position for an iPhone Developer Guru would come onboard to "develop the most challenging product of your life." Oh, Plex. You tease!
All sorts of buzz in the blogosphere this afternoon after Plex, makers of a respected Mac-based digital media center application updated their blog with a cryptic hint that seems to point to next Wednesday's Apple event.

Cases show new design for iPod touch, Nano
Several cases from the Chinese vendor X-Doria allegedly show the external designs for the fourth-generation iPod touch and sixth-generation iPod nano. South Korean companies pledge to combat iPad
South Korean companies are vowing to introduce other tablet offerings to combat the iPad, which could ship to the country very soon, writes Agence France-Presse. The country's top wireless carrier, SK Telecom, is hedging much of its bets on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch Android-based tablet. "We are aiming for a September release," says SK spokesman Kim Dae-Woong, though prices and a release date are as yet undecided. "We are also considering diverse tablet PCs at the moment."

TeleNav releases free OnMyWay notification app for iPhone
TeleNav is the developer of a lot of mobile navigation applications, including AT&T Navigator for the iPhone. Now the company has come out with an iPhone version of a popular app that originally launched for the BlackBerry platform -- OnMyWay.
OnMyWay has a simple goal -- it tells another person or group of people that you are currently "on your way" and sends them the estimated time of your arrival. Nokia C7 im ersten Review

Zugegeben, auch bei den Russen von Mobile-review hat man natürlich nur einen Prototypen des neuen C7 von Nokia, der aber hat man gründlich unter die Lupe genommen. Das zweite Symbian^3 nach dem N9 soll einiges billiger (ca. 350 Euro) werden aber dennoch mit 8GB Festplatte, AMOLED, 3,5 Zoll Bildschirm mit 640x360 Auflösung, Multi-Touch, microSD-Slot und 256 RAM schnell laufen und voll überzeugen. Über die Kamera wurde allerdings noch nicht wirklich etwas gesagt soll aber 8 Megapixel haben und neben dem geringeren internen Speicher der Hauptunterschied zum N9 sein.

HP's in-house webOS competition yields about 500 apps, says CTO
A little backstory: HP has an annual in-house event for its employees called TechCon, and this year a challenge was issued to the engineers to make the best webOS app (free phones were offered as incentive). Got that? Good. Samsung brings 30, 90 series LCD/TV monitor hybrids to US
Samsung upgraded its US computer displays with two models previously only available outside the US. The 30 series previously seen 90 series both have internal HDTV tuners to pick up ATSC signals. Apple, Adobe, Tivo, HP and Xerox are among 23 companies being sued by an Allen, Texas business, Ganas, in a new patent infringement lawsuit. Although four patents in total are said to be at stake, the key one is 7,136,913. HTC has filed a rejection (PDF) of the patent claims in Apple's main lawsuit. China Unicom profits drop in spite of iPhone exclusivity
China Unicom profits fell 54 percent in the second quarter, in spite of benefits from being the only official iPhone carrier in China, Bloomberg notes. The drop is attributed partly to discounts on phones, but mostly to marketing costs, which exceeded estimates. Unicom nevertheless attracted only 4.88 million subscribers in the quarter, as compared to China Mobile's 15.2 million. Mobile also continued to dwarf Unicom in overall subscribers, with 554 million versus 157 million.

This is one of the cooler things I've seen done with the iPhone's capacitive touchscreen. (i)Pawn is a game of sorts that works with a series of little figures on tokens that actually interact with the touchscreen itself. The Sharper Image may not be quite the retail presence it once was, but it looks like it's still in good enough shape to hop on the latest trend -- it's just announced "The Literati by The Sharper Image," a $159 e-reader with a 7-inch color screen. Netflix app hits the iPhone and iPod touch
Here's some great news for Netflix subscribers. The free Netflix app has finally made it to the iPhone and iPod touch. Netflix members on plans as low as US $8.99 can instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix servers.
This was an eagerly-awaited app, and I downloaded it this morning to give it a test. It works fine on both 3G and WiFi, and the 3G feature is a bit of a surprise given AT&T's position of holding back on some streaming apps. Wir hatten mal eine Waschmaschine mit "Fuzzy Logic" und irgendwie spielt der "Digital Toaster" von T-Fal in der gleichen Liga, denn die Kiste hat nicht einmal einen Brotsensor, dessen Daten schlau verarbeitet werden, hier ersetzen das "LCD-Display" und Buttons schlicht den Drehknopf bzw. den Schieberegler traditioneller Toaster. Rockchip's Supernova x1 tablet does 3D without glasses or technical specs
You had to know that Nintendo's 3DS wouldn't be the only glasses-free 3D handheld for long. Our Chinese compatriots caught sight of a prototype device from Rockchip called the Supernova x1, performing some similar lenticular trickery to make images appear 3D. Exactly what display tech it uses remains a mystery, but we're told the Disney footage being displayed had to be "processed" in some way to make it appear 3D. Like the 3DS, the 3D effect here can be adjusted or disabled entirely, but that's really all that is known at this point about this mystery

IDC: Servermarkt mit größtem Quartalswachstum seit 2003
Laut IDC sind die mit Servern erzielten Umsätze im zweiten Quartal weltweit um 11 Prozent auf 10,9 Milliarden Dollar gestiegen. Es ist der größte Zuwachs gegenüber einem Vorjahresquartal seit 2003. Sony launches six new DVRs, all write to BDXL and play back in 3D
Well, Sony is a little late to the party on this one, two days behind Panasonic announcing six new BDXL-writing DVRs. But, the company is definitely still on the BDXL bleeding edge, announcing its own suite of six devices, ranging from 320GB to 2TB of internal storage and all but one offering dual tuners. When those tuners have filled that storage they can all write to 100GB BDXL discs, which we'll remind you one more time are not backwards compatible with current Blu-ray players.

O2 erstellt Öko-Index für Handys - Apple verweigert Teilnahme
O2 hat jetzt in Großbritannien einen Ökoindex für Mobiltelefone herausgebracht. Der Index ist in dem Land der erste Bewertungskatalog seiner Art. Samsung Galaxy Tab gets video preview in Korea
It sees like we can't let a day pass without talking about Samsung's upcoming Android 2.2 tablet. This time, there's a whole video preview, courtesy of some of our Korean brethren. Android 2.2, WCDMA 3G, 802.11n WiFi, a 16:10 screen ratio, and a DMB tuner for those TV-crazy Koreans are all listed on the spec sheet, but you'll be wanting to see the Galaxy Tab's UI in motion. Netflix this morning posted its long promised iPhone version as a universal app (free, App Store) that works with both the iPhone and iPod touch as well as the iPad. In its smaller form, the movie streaming app has a true native interface rather than a recreation of the website on Apple's tablet. Apple event may bring basic iTunes web store, not streaming
Apple's cloud-based efforts at its music event next week may involve a more social component rather than any streaming service, tipsters said Thursday. Music industry contacts told AllThingsD that they expect a "lightweight" version of the iTunes Store on the web that would make it easier to share preferences over social networks, though it wouldn't include direct sharing. How much functionality would exist isn't known, but it would be an improvement on Apple's current web presence, which is limited to viewing individual album pages.

MPEG LA verlängert Gratislizenz von Videocodec H.264
Die MPEG Licensing Association (MPEG LA) hat angekündigt, auch nach 2015 keine Lizenzgebühren für Videoinhalte im AVC/H.264-Format zu erheben, sofern diese für den Endkunden kostenlos sind. Dieses sogenannte "Internet Broadcast AVC Video" bleibt laut MPEG LA für die gesamte Gültigkeitsdauer der Lizenz kostenlos. 2011 geschlossene Fünfjahreslizenzen gelten also 2016 noch.

Nachdem MPEG LA bereits den Zeitraum für die freie Nutzung von H.264 bei kostenlosen Web-Inhalten bis 2015 verlängert hatte, gibt die Vereinigung der Rechteinhaber an MPEG-Standards nun bekannt, dass man auch nach 2015 keine Lizenzgebühren für kostenlose H.264-Videos im Internet erheben wird. In den letzten Tagen machte eine Meldung die Runde, dass eine Britin mal eben den Rekord im SMS-Tippen gebrochen habe: 25,94 Sekunden für einen vorgegebenen Text mit einem Galaxy S. Nike files patent for auto-lacing sneakers, Marty McFly doth protest
We've seen some extremely DIY auto-lacing sneakers, but it looks like the big boys -- Nike -- have thought about getting in on the game as well. Patent filings which occurred in early through late 2009 show off an automatic lacing system that is pretty reminiscent of Marty McFly's invention in Back to the Future, and we can tell you that from the looks of it, it's a future we'd definitely like to inhabit. The shoes appear to boast a charging system and lights in addition to the lacing component, and while so few patent apps ever lead to a real retail product, we're really rooting for this one. Well, what do we have here? Last we heard about the Canon 60D it was just a twinkle in our articulating screen of a peripheral vision. And now it's official -- my, how times have changed. Sony intros RDP-X50iP speaker dock
Sony has expanded its line of iPod accessories with the RDP-X50iP, a speaker dock that focuses on portability. The dock appears to share many features with Sony's RDP-XF100iP, including 40 Watts of power and a 150 Hz - 10 kHz frequency response. The housing measures approximately 14 x 6 x 6 inches, which includes two 3-inch speakers.

Mac indie dev asks The Pirate Bay to keep a torrent of his software
As a software developer myself I know how hard it is to see your product being ripped off. We have recently reported on how even $2 iPhone games like Stardunk or iPad games like Aqua Globs HD are not immune despite their low cost and closed platforms. Their developers have reported piracy rates as high as 38% and 50%, respectively.

We can't say there's a real shortage of streaming, set-top boxes on the market, but that doesn't mean we won't welcome Sony's addition with open arms. Steam releases Mac stats, share drops to 5%
Steam has released its latest hardware survey results, and there's both good and bad news for us Mac gamers. The bad news first: Mac usage of the gaming service has apparently leveled off since the big debut a few months ago, and while the Mac share was originally around 8%, it appears the novelty has worn off a bit, and Mac usage has fallen down to about 5% of the total Steam audience. That's not too surprising (don't forget that the service kicked off with a free Portal game and a good amount of publicity), and it's important to remember that 5% of Steam's 25 million users is still a significant audience. Olympus E-5 rumored for Photokina
Olympus may be preparing to announce a new flagship DSLR, the E-5, at the Photokina expo next month in Germany. The camera will reportedly retain the 12-megapixel sensor of the current E-3, along with the 4/3 lens mount, an unnamed source has told 4/3 Rumors. Olympus reportedly designed the E-5 to compete directly with Nikon's D300s and Canon's 7D.

iControlPad going into production (again), 3000 units in first run
After a few fits and false starts, the image above shows the iControlPad in what's purported to be its final production form, according to inventor Craig Rothwell's Twitter account. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, and sales are supposed to start sometime in September, but Rothwell says the unit above is the first off the line, and there will be a production run of just 3000 to start. Apple lädt zum Special-Event am 1. September
So manches Gerücht ging in den vergangenen Wochen davon aus, dass Apple zum alljährlichen Special-Event erst Mitte September laden wird. Diesen zum Trotz hat Apple gestern Abend einige US-Medien zur offiziellen Veranstaltung am 1. September ins Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco eingeladen.In diesem Jahr muss das Special-Event auf einen Slogan verzichten, stattdessen ist der Einladung ein Bild beigefügt, auf dem eine Gitarre mit geschickt integrierten Apple-Logo zu sehen ist. Mitsubishi debuts three full HD 3D televisions... coming to a sweet home theater near you
Mitsubishi Japan has announced three brand new, full HD tvs for your home theater-loving pleasure. Much like the Panasonics recently unleashed, all three boast the ability to record to their hard drives or Blu-ray. Spec-wise, they've got full HD, backlit LCDs, 1TB HDDs, a ten speaker Diatone system, USB and SD slots, and HDMI. The sets, which come in 40, 46, and 55-inches, also come with a pair of 3D glasses. More murmuring about 99 cent iTunes TV rentals

Amazon loses exclusive deal with Andrew Wiley
Amazon's exclusive digital distribution deal with star literary agent Andrew Wiley looks like it wasn't all it was cracked up to be; in fact, it seems to have fallen through before the ink dried on the contracts. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Andrew Wiley is "largely abandoning" the agreement it struck with Amazon after 13 of the 20 titles supposedly included in the deal -- published by Random House -- came up for debate. The books, which included works by John Updike, VS Naipaul and Dave Eggers, among others, will now be digitally distributed by Random House itself to Amazon. While neither Wiley nor Amazon commented on the failed deal, we have a feeling that the

Ngmoco's iPhone titles nominated for a few GDC Online awards
Nominations have been announced for the Game Developers Choice Online Awards (to be announced at the upcoming GDC Online conference in Austin), and iPhone developer Ngmoco has secured a few spots in among the rest of the big PC game developers. We Rule picked up nominations for Best Online Game Design, Best Online Audio, and Best New Online Game, and Godfinger was recognized in the Best Online Visual Arts category. iPhone developers Booyah and Digital Chocolate also got nominated, but both of those companies were chosen for their Facebook titles, not their iPhone creations.
