Flash hobbles Android use of BBC iPlayer versus iPhone
A Freedom of Information request to the BBC completed just Thursday has revealed that Android use of iPlayer may have been hurt, rather than helped, by the use of Flash. As the Android version of iPlayer requires the still-rare Flash plugin to work, British viewers streamed just 6,400 episodes in July. In comparison, 5,272,464 shows streamed to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch owners.

Mysterious Verizon-bound HTC handset appears mysteriously on the internet
Hey -- what's this? Well, from the looks of it, it's a new, as-yet-unnamed HTC device. There is perilously little info available about the mystery mobile, but it appears to boast an 8 megapixel camera with a flash plus a front-facing camera, a 4.3-inch screen, and a headphone jack. It also appears that it's going to boast HTC's own Sense UI. Yes, that's all there is to the story right now but we're going to stay up late tonight to be on the lookout for further information on this one. Overclocked, liquid-cooled Mac Pro trades noise for speed
I wonder if it's only a matter of time before Apple decides to go to a liquid-cooled solution rather than keeping with bigger and faster fans. In any case, one technically adept person over at Asetek didn't want to wait for that day. He went about not only water cooling an older 8-core Mac Pro, but overclocked it as well. The result was a much quieter system, with the same speed as a newer Mac Pro and at lower cost.

Nikon Coolpix P7000, D7000 tapped for September 8 and 15
A key leak on Friday has pointed to Nikon launching two of its most important cameras for the year in the last two weeks before the Photokina show. The Coolpix P7000 and possibly some more point-and-shoot models should be unveiled September 8, according to Nikon Rumors, while the D7000 DSLR would arrive a week later, on September 15. As reliable and fantastic as your Mac is, chances are it will occasionally need service. When you're speaking with a representative on the phone or standing at the Genius Bar with your lovely, you'll be asked to provide some basic information, like the model, OS and so on.

Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) goes alpha for Android and Nokia N900

Microsoft co-founder firm sues Apple, Facebook over search
Interval Licensing today hoped to profit off the back of technology and retail companies today as it sued several top firms. for alleged patent infringement. It claimed that AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo and YouTube specifically for purportedly infringing on four patents for "fundamental" web technology used for online commerce and search. The patents touch on a form of browsing as well as means of generating attention through design or through a notification system.

Netflix iPhone app jumps to top of App Store free chart
Having only been available for a day, the Netflix iPhone app has already reached the top of the App Store's free category. The software lets Netflix subscribers stream movies and TV shows over Wi-Fi or 3G. Previously, the only way of streaming Netflix content to an iOS device was through the iPad app, launched in April.

Paul Allen's company sues Apple, Google
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has formally sued Apple, Google and several others over the use of technologies for which he holds the patents.
The Wall Street Journal was unable to reach any of the parties involved for comment, but notes that Allen has been going after companies, many of them high-profile, that he believes are using software that was developed in his Silicon Valley laboratory several years ago.
The suit identifies four specific patents. Each appears to be a huge part of how contemporary e-commerce and Internet search tools work. Microsoft's co-founder Paul Allen has filed suit against nine companies over patent violations. Through his current firm, Interval Licensing LLC, Allen is suing Apple, Google, AOL, Facebook, ebay, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo, and YouTube (which is a subsidiary of Google). The claims involve four separate patents, most of which cover integral parts of how the companies named do business. USA Today deemphasizing print to focus on iPad, web
USA Today today said it would undergo a major overhaul of its structure to shift attention away from print. Most of its focus will now be on formatting for digital, including the iPad app, other mobile devices, and the web. Court reaffirms: fourth amendment rights not violated if the police install a GPS device on your car when it's not in your garage
Back in January, a court in Portland, Oregon ruled that the Fourth Amendment rights of one Juan Pineda-Moreno had not been violated by the police when they tracked him using various GPS devices they installed on the underside of his Jeep with magnets. You see, the police suspected that Pineda-Moreno was growing Marijuana somewhere, and they really didn't like that. Eventually, Pineda-Moreno was arrested and convicted of crimes involving the growth of said Marijuana -- but he appealed the decision because he thought that his Fourth Amendment rights (the one which guards against unreasonable search and seizure) had been violated. Dev abandons iOS app after three-month approval wait
The developer of Briefs has reportedly given up on getting the title approved for the App Store, and instead released the source code to the public. Rob Rhyne explains that he has been waiting over three months for Apple to approve the app, which presents prototypes of app concepts. Amazon's third major iteration of its flagship reading device, the Kindle, comes out of the gate looking strong: the new graphite finish (just like its big brother, the Kindle DX) with a slimmer, lighter form factor, plus a bumped refresh rate for its E Ink screen. In Brief: September 1 Apple event
As preparations begin in San Francisco (check out the Yerba Buena Center's new look) for the September 1 press event, here's a brief review of what's likely and unlikely to go down.
iPods are a given, and likely to be the thrust of the event. Apple has refreshed the line every year in September since the iPod's introduction. We're guessing a more iPhone 4-like touch with a camera and possibly a retina display, perhaps on a higher-end model.
Also expected is a new iTunes rental option for TV episodes. As of this writing, TV shows are available for purchase at US$1.99 each. Bloomberg has suggested that

G-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we'd like to see them try and stop it
Hopefully you had your Campbell's Chunky Fully Loaded Beef Stew this morning, because it takes a Man to look down the barrel of the G-Mate Mag Gun and live. The weapon just passed through the FCC unscathed, and now it's gunning for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The basic operation is simple enough, with triggers, face buttons, a d-pad and everything else you'd need to ape a modern console controller. There's only one analog nub, but that's of course because the gun's own motion is meant to emulate the second. G-Mate isn't so clear on how that part of the gun works, but from what we can glean, it's basically an accelerometer and / or gyroscope, which you calibrate to the center of your particular screen with a dedicated button. Thieves smash into University Towne Apple Store
The University Towne Center Apple Store in San Diego, California was hit by a robbery early Thursday morning, a local TV station reports. Around 4:20AM two men smashed through the glass front doors of the store, and proceeded to take a dozen iPhones out of a display case. Nike Air Maxes get a Wii Balance Board infusion
Recently Nike -- a shoe company that seems to enjoy a side dish of tech from time to time -- challenged 78 artists to "hack" its shoes and come up with something decidedly different than your typical Air Force Ones. Now, a lot of the projects were more art and less tech, but that can't be said for entrant Nick Marsh's contribution to the experiment. The designer fused the internals of a Wii Balance Board with a pair of Air Maxes to create a gaming experience that may not be nuanced, but certainly seems capable of making you break a sweat. According to Nick, games are played exactly as they would have been previously, but since you can't step of the board, you're required to lift your foot or sit down when games require you to back off. The MobileMe web app went down for scheduled maintenance last night, and returned this morning with an overview video. In about three minutes, it points out the features of the recently-redesigned Mail web app. Those who have been using it for a while won't find anything new in the video, but it's still a nice review.

Novell meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang

Intel warns of low summer PC sales
Intel confirmed fears on Friday and dropped its expectations for its summer results based on a slump in PC sales. It dropped its revenue outlook from a range of $11.2 billion to $12 billion down to $11 billion with a range of $200 million above or below. Seaswarm: Ölteppichbots vom MIT könnten BP-Teppich in einem Monat auffangen

Apple severs ties with SurfaceInk in wake of tablet project
Apple has ended a relationship with Silicon Valley firm SurfaceInk, according to the CEO of the latter company, Eric Bauswell. The exact link between the two parties is unclear, a result of confidentiality agreements. Bauswell claims, however, that Apple broke things off because of "growing awareness of our [SurfaceInk's] turnkey capabilities." Dell dropping Windows Phone 7 devices from its roadmap?
Now we don't have much more to go on here than some analyst chatter and a lengthy article from TechCrunch, but if you believe what you read, a major player has just dropped Windows Phone 7 devices from its roadmap. And that player is Dell. According to Jonathan Goldberg, an telecom analyst at Deutsche Bank, the only remaining partners currently working on Windows Phone 7 handsets are HTC, Samsung, and LG. If this is true (and that's a big if), that means that the seriously awesome looking Dell Lightning that we spied in leaks recently will never see the light of day -- as a WP7 device, at least.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I eventually demystified the Apple 9/1/2010 Press Invitation. I had a look at the press release image I found on www.fscklog.com (it's a little bigger than yours) in Photoshop.
Instinctively the soundhole was very interesting to me, especially the "barely lit" part underneath the strings, where you can see the inside of the guitar back. Classic guitars typically have a label of the guitar maker there and in the image you can barely see something that could be a label.
I found it very interesting that the Apple creative crew was so picky in such a detail, so this again pulled my attraction. Of course, it would simply look odd, if you couldn't see anything of the guitar's inside from a front shot like this, so maybe there's nothin

iPhone 4 Dual SIM Case könnte schöner sein, erfüllt aber seinen Zweck
Nun ja, was soll man dazu sagen, es ist ein Case, es sollte auch vor Funklöchern schützen und es verbirgt eine zweite SIM-Karte, um Vielreisern das Switchen zwischen In- und Auslandskarte zu erleichtern, und, die zweite Karte muss nicht unbedingt eine microSIM sein. Wow, aber irgendwie sieht das iPhone 4 in dieser Sache ein wenig aus wie ein in Folie gehpllter Schwerstpatient, was aber durchaus einen Terminator-Goth-Charme mit sich bringt.

Microsoft spending $500 million to sell Windows Phone 7
A leak late Thursday hinted that Microsoft is slated to spend $500 million just on marketing for the Windows Phone 7 launch. One source understood that $1 billion was being spent on the fall release, only half of which was actually focused on development. Microsoft hasn't confirmed the amount, but Deutsche Bank estimated for TechCrunch that it was at least $400 million, not including direct financial incentives to phone manufacturers.

Blockbuster bankrupt in September after Internet pressure
Blockbuster is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy under the weight of competition from Internet services, sources said late Thursday. Attendees of a top-level meeting told the LA Times that Blockbuster was warning major movie studios of a "pre-planned" Chapter 11 bankruptcy likely for mid-September. Samsung may make just 100K Galaxy Tabs a month, trail iPad
Samsung may have only modest ambitions for the Galaxy Tab despite its being setup as an iPad rival, part suppliers contended on Friday. They estimated for DigiTimes that initial production of the Android tablet sits at 100,000 per month, or less than a tenth of Apple's sales rate. There are lots of frantic action games available on the App Store, but sometimes all you want to do is get home, sit down with your iPad, and relax with a fun puzzle. Zentomino is a game that lets you do exactly that. It's a very zen take on the "pentomino" puzzle game, requiring you to fit a certain set of shapes into a specific outline. The game's about as relaxing as it gets. While the music is somewhat repetitive, you're free to move as many pieces around as much as you want, and just pushing the big, colorful shapes around can be almost as entertaining as actually completing the puzzle. There's not a lot of flair, but what's there is intuitive and fun, and when you just want to sit on the couch and relax, that's what you need.

H.264 Video Codec jetzt umsonst für immer

Viele der Entwicklungen rings um Video im Netz in der letzten Zeit hatten ihren Antrieb nicht zuletzt durch das drohende Ende der freien Verfügbarkeit von H.264 für nichtkommerzielle Zwecke. Jetzt hat die MPEG-LA dieses Ende - 2016 - abgeschafft und wer Videos ins Netz stellt braucht sich auch in Zukunft keine Sorgen mehr machen, ob man nun irgendwann für den dafür verwendeten Codec Lizenzen zahlen muss. Nein. Nie mehr. Jedenfalls solange wir von unkommerzieller Verwendung reden. Firefox-Unterstützung von H.264 in HTML5 ist damit noch nicht wahrscheinlicher geworden.

United Internet bestätigt nach gutem Halbjahr seine Prognose
United Internet hat seine Geschäftszahlen nach IFRS für das zweite Quartal und das erste Halbjahr 2010 (PDF) vorgelegt. Demnach stieg das Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) in den vergangenen drei Monaten gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres von 90,2 auf 91,7 Millionen Euro. Das Ergebnis vor Zinsen und Steuern (EBIT) sank hingegen von 76,8 auf 71,5 Millionen Euro.

Wir haben diverse Prototypen von flexiblen E-Paper Bildschirmen gesehen und auch von LGs Projekt schon gehört, aber Ende des Jahres will LG nicht nur ein 9,7-Zoll Farb-E-Paper Display in Produktion bringen, sondern vor allem auch wirklich das 19-Zoll E-Paper, das flexibel ist und somit wirklich wirkt wie ein Zeitungsersatz. Apple Schweiz 2009: 820 Millionen Umsatz; 11. grösste ICT-Firma
Wie jedes Jahr Ende August hat nun auch heuer Computerworld/IDG ihre Zahlen zu den stärksten ICT-Firmen der Schweiz veröffentlicht: In der «Top 500 2010»-Erhebung werden die fünfhundert grössen Schweizer ICT-Firmen nach deren Umsatz 2009 gelistet. Wie aus der Erhebung herausgeht, konnte sich die Branche 2009 trotz Kriesenjahr gar um ein Prozent gegenüber 2008 verbessern. Die Top 500 Unternehmen konnten zusammen einen Umsatz von 49.7 Milliarden Schweizer Franken erwirtschaften — soviel wie noch nie.
Die Swisscom bleibt zwar weiterhin auf dem ersten Platz, musste 2009 jedoch einen Umsatzrückgang von 197 Millionen Franken hinnehmen und gehört damit zu den Top-Verlierern der Liste nach absoluten Umsatzzahlen. Die Top 10 kompletieren: Sunrise, HP, IBM, Orange, Cablecom, die Coop-Gruppe, Microsoft, SIX und ALSO.
Apple schaffte es knapp nicht in die Top-10: Platz 11 muss vorerst genügen (2009: 13).
Google, 2009 noch auf dem 23 Platz, steigert sich etwas und liegt mittlerweile auf dem 21. Platz. Apple-Konkurrent DE

Durch ein bereits geschlossenes Leck waren über die Webseiten der Drogeriekette Schlecker die Daten von über 150.000 Kunden des Unternehmens einsehbar. Mehr verkaufte PCs in Deutschland
Das Marktforschungsinstitut Gartner hat aktuelle PC-Verkaufszahlen für Deutschland veröffentlicht. Demnach konnten die Hersteller zwischen April und Juni rund 2,8 Millionen Geräte absetzen. Gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum bedeutet das einen Zuwachs um 23 Prozent.

H.264 bleibt gebührenfrei
Das mittlerweile sehr weit verbreitete Video-Coded «H.264» von der MPEG LA bleibt nun auch nach 2015 gebührenfrei. Das hat gestern die MPEG Licensing Administration bekannt gegeben. Die Firma, die neben den Rechten an diversen Video-Codes zum Beispiel auch die Rechte an FireWire/IEEE 1394 verwaltet, besteht aus einem Pool an Firmen, zu denen unter anderen Apple, Dolby, LG, Microsoft, Mitsubishi Electric, Philips, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp und auch Sony gehören. MPEG ist vor allem aufgrund deren DVD-Format MPEG-2 bekannt, welches auf allen Film-DVDs verwendet wird. Mit H.264 wird seit Jahren ein Format angeboten, das speziell für die heutigen Bedürfnisse (Hohe Qualität bei möglichst geringem Speicherplatz) angelegt ist. Apple bot als eines der ersten Unternehmen breiten Support für dieses Codec (macprime-News-Artikel vom April 2004). Apple veröffentlicht Update für MacBook Pro Firmware
Apple hat in der Nacht von gestern auf heute nicht nur ein iWork-Update veröffentlicht, sondern bietet für aktuelle MacBook-Pro-Modelle mit 15- und 17-Zoll auch ein EFI-Firmware-Update. Das Update behebt ein (selten auftretendes) Problem, bei dem es beim Systemstart oder dem normalen Betrieb zu einem System-Absturz kommen kann. Zudem verbessert das Update die Unterstützung externer Monitore.

Marketing company settles with FTC over shill iTunes reviews
Marketing company Reverb Communications has reportedly settled with the Federal Trade Commission over accusations of shill reviews for App Store titles. The FTC charged Reverb with engaging in deceptive advertising after employees posted positive reviews of iPhone games. The reviews did not contain any disclosure that the authors were actually hired by the marketing company to represent the apps.

At long last even us plebeian supercar lovers can afford to say we own a Lambo. GAO says US mobile rates dropping, but competition worsening
The US General Accounting Office on Thursday sent out a report (PDF) warning about mixed results for competition in the cellular industry. It said competition had decayed significantly as moves to consolidate the industry in the hands of just a few carriers, such as Verizon's buyout of Alltel, was making it "more difficult" for smaller carriers to offer a real challenge.
