Man watches his home being robbed on his iPhone
The A.P. is reporting the story of a Dallas man who went out of town to visit relatives 1400 miles away in Hartford, Conn. While he was there he got an alert from his iCam app running on his iPhone that motion had been detected in the house -- which turned out to be two intruders trying to get in, and eventually throwing a brick through a glass door to gain access.
He called 911 and the next motion alert he received was the arrival of police officers with guns drawn. It isn't clear from the story if the burglars got away with any loot, but certainly iCam did work and relayed the message to the owner of the house.

Tapulous integrated into Disney Mobile, releases Katy Perry Revenge
Disney buying Tapulous was one of the most high-profile App Store acquisitions so far, and here are the first fruits of that partnership. First up, Disney reports that Tapulous has been integrated into the rest of the company -- the studio is now fully part of the "Disney Mobile" division, so all future releases will come from the Disney Mobile name rather than the Tapulous brand. That contradicts with the actual App Store listing at the moment -- there's no mention of Disney in any of Tapulous' app listings. But that information can take a while to change, so we'll have to see if Disney updates those listings.

Security Update 2010-005 now available
Gather up the kids and press the software update button: the latest Security Update (2010-005) for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 is now on the prowl. The full list of fixes is below, but the headlines include a patch for an embedded font vulnerability, network interceptions, ClamAV antivirus bundled with OS X Server, malicious PDF and PNG file protection, and updated versions of PHP and Samba.

News: Apple to offer 99 cent TV episode rentals?
Apple is in talks with Fox parent News Corp., along with other media companies, to offer 99 cent TV episode rentals through iTunes. Nissan rep confirms delivery of 25,000 Leaf EVs to US by the end of 2011
Nissan has responded to rumors that high demand for its Leaf EV in Japan could cause the company to limit delivery in the United States to just around 3,000 units by the end of March, 2011. That rumor sprang from comments made by a Mossy Nissan general manager, and luckily for electric vehicle lovers in the States, seem to be wholly untrue. Mark Perry, Nissan's director of product planning says that the statement from Mossy Nissan was "purely speculative," and that product allocation is decided based on customer orders. New AWS-equipped HTC in FCC -- is it the T-Mobile G2, the Glacier, or something else?

KeyCase iPad Folio packs a Bluetooth keyboard, scores FCC approval
It's not the laptop-style ClamCase iPad case that we saw renders of way back in May, but this so-called KeyCase iPad Folio does manage to do a similar trick, and it's thankfully very much real -- it's just landed FCC approval and is already listed at one online retailer (though it's out of stock). Box.net's iPad project at D7 Consulting: How the iPad works at work

Homemade Fallout 3 plasma rifle makes our post-apocalyptic future seem less bleak
The A3-21 Plasma Rifle is quite the little devastator in Fallout 3 and it doesn't look half bad in the so-called real world either. Lovingly pieced together by one Ryan Palser, this homebrewed replica (the lower of the two in the image above) took five months to complete and involved the enrollment of his wife's painting skills for the weathering job. WSJ says iPads gaining acceptance in corporations
The past few weeks have been fascinating for Apple watchers. The business press has been reporting that the brand, formerly a pariah in the buttoned-down world of corporate IT, is now being accepted with open arms. We had a story yesterday about the growth of Mac sales in the government and enterprise markets, and now the Wall Street Journal is reporting on how the iPad is finding a home in the business world.
In the WSJ Tech piece, reporter Ben Worthen notes how the iPhone was banned by companies when it first came out in 2007 for being inappropriate for the workplace. The iPad, however, has been quickly embraced by companies.

We've been waiting since December to get our hands on the Neato XV-11 robot vacuum. In preparation we steadfastedly refused to sweep up a single flake of dust, going on something of a cleaning strike until the thing finally hit retail. Of course, that wait was supposed to be a mere three month affair, and we've certainly gone that long without vacuuming before. The further six months of delays, however, left us questioning our resolve as Engadget HQ became less and less livable. Finally we've been unable to unleash this smartypants vac onto our filthy floors, and all we can say is that it was well worth the wait.

Samsung leaving the e-paper business, citing cost issues
Samsung Electronics announced Monday that its halting production of e-paper due to cost issues. While Samsung has yet to out an actual device boasting e-paper, but did show off a prototype late last year which boasted a color display. The official word from Samsung itself is that it will not actually exit the e-reader market, rather that it will produce a device with an LCD, with plans to launch said reader next year. MacBook makeovers bring new life to a couple of old laptops
Last weekend provided not one, but two opportunities for me to do some upgrades to some "old" MacBooks to bring 'em up to workable condition. To start with, one client of mine wanted to get rid of an unused MacBook, so I decided to purchase it from her as a machine for training. The other client had one of the original 15" Intel Core Duo MacBook Pros and doesn't want to spend the money on a new machine. In both cases, the machines were running older versions of Mac OS X, had insufficient RAM, and had hard drives that were both slow and small. The following post is a textbook example of how you can bring new life to slightly old Macs by just spending enough money to upgrade the memory, OS, and hard disk drive.

Sony intros Alpha A560 and A580, three new lenses
On top of its translucent mirror cameras, Sony today put out two new conventional Alpha cameras to occupy the entry level. The 14.2-megapixel A560 and 16.2-megapixel A580 use a traditional flip-up mirror but still shoot AVCHD (H.264) video in 1080i. They shoot slower, at 7FPS maximum, but still have the advantage of a second, preview-only sensor to compose quicker in live view, zoom in while having a 1X view and get input on the focus before committing to the shot.

A recent series of fraudulent iTunes downloads, tied to PayPal accounts, is not based on any new exploit, sources claim. Described as "close to Apple," the sources suggest that iTunes has not been compromised and that Apple isn't aware of any sudden jump in fraud. iPhone-controlled 3D display, via ping pong balls and air pumps
I'm not quite 100% sure what this is -- it's supposed to be a "floating forecaster," some sort of 3D display for weather information, but to me it looks more like 30 air guns with ping pong balls sitting in them. I don't really see how the "weather" part of the display works, but what's really cool is that the whole thing is controlled by an iPhone. It looks like you touch whichever part of the grid you want to raise or lower, and then move your thumb up or down to set the ball at a certain level.
With a little more software work, there's probably a lot more that could be done here, just creating patterns by swiping across the screen, or even running a game like Pong as the balls raise and lower across the grid in sequence. But as an art in

Wir berichteten kürzlich erst, dass die ersten Kunden in den USA ihre neuen Mac Pro bereits erhalten haben. Es war daher nur eine Frage der Zeit bis wir die ersten Benchmarks und Fotos zu Gesicht bekommen würden, wobei diese wohl eher der langweiligere Teil dieser Meldung sind.Um die Leistung möglichst vergleichend und am Besten zu benchmarken, werden seit Jahren die kleineen aber feinen Benchmark-Tools „Geekbench“ und „Cinebench“ verwendet. Das Ergebnis ist in der Tat berauschend, denn das Top-Modell des neue Mac Pro konnte nochmals um Einiges zulegen. Lung-inspired hydrogen fuel cell skimps on platinum, sees efficiency boost
For as spectacular as hydrogen fuel cells are on paper, they haven't been able to replace combustion engines in vehicles. Or much of anything else, really. But thanks to Signe Kjelstrup at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo, the tried-and-true fuel cell is getting a serious boost. Kjelstrup's crew determined that by using less platinum in a cell, a substantial increase in efficiency and a significant decrease in cost could be achieved. Thousands stolen through iTunes/Paypal scam
The BBC reports that a web scam is affecting a number of iTunes accounts that are linked to PayPal. Amounts ranging up to $4,700 were reported on Twitter and through Techcrunch as being stolen.
All signs point to users falling for an online scam known as phishing. Mac Pro Mid 2006: ATI Radeon HD 5770 und 5870 kompatibel mit 32-bit-EFI?
Nutzer eines Mac Pro aus dem Jahr 2006 mussten bisher davon ausgehen, dass aktuelle ATI Radeon HD HD 5770 und 5870 nicht in ihren Geräten funktionieren. Offensichtlich ist dem aber nicht so, wie Netkas herausstellt.
Die verschiedenen Generationen des Mac Pro unterscheiden sich nur marginal, ein Unterschied liegt allerdings im EFI, dem Extensible Firmware Interface.

JVC intros two new touchscreen Picsio pocket camcorders
JVC this morning reworked its Picsio camcorders to give them new interfaces and refresh the features. The GC-FM2 and GC-WP10 replace the usual back buttons with a three-inch touchscreen that can show on-screen controls and full-screen playback. Canon previews 120-megapixel camera sensor
Canon this morning gave a look at the future of cameras with one of the world's largest camera sensor. The 120-megapixel, APS-H sized CMOS sensor is about 7.5 times larger than that in the EOS 1D Mark IV but yet is capable of performance that would be expected of current cameras. It could shoot full 13280x9184 still images at up to 9.5FPS and could record 1080p with just 1/60th of its usable pixels.

Sony intros Alpha A33, A55 with translucent mirrors, video
Sony kicked off a slew of Alpha camera launches today with its flagships, the A33 and A55. The two are the first to use translucent mirrors that let light hit both the autofocus and image sensors; the move allows the cameras to refocus even while the sensor is taking the previous shot. Using the mirrors not only improves the burst shooting speed, up to 10FPS for the A55, but makes the camera smaller as it doesn't have to have room for flipping the mirror.

12 people charged in iTunes royalty fraud
I guess with all of the money flowing around iTunes, sooner or later someone would have to try to steal some of it. Twelve people have been charged in the UK with basically laundering money through iTunes -- they were allegedly uploading their own tracks onto the music sales service, then buying those same tracks with stolen credit card numbers. The fraudsters nabbed over $300,000 worth of royalties in just a four month period between September 2008 and January 2009.
The Register doesn't note how the 12 (who come from a surprising number of various jobs and backgrounds) came up with this idea, or how they got caught, although there was an investigation underway by the FBI. iTunes wasn't the only service defrauded -- Amazon was reportedly used for some of the

Facebooks iPhone App hat über 100 Millionen Benutzer
«Facebook for iPhone» hat mittlerweile über 100 Millionen monatlich aktive Benutzer, das geht aus den Statistiken der Facebook-App-Page auf facebook.com hervor, welche die Anzahl monatlich aktiven Benutzer ausgibt. Diese Zahl ist Ende letzter Woche auf über 100 Millionen angestiegen. In Anbetracht dessen, wie viele iOS-Geräte (iPhones, iPod touches und iPads) sich mittlerweile im Umlauf befinden, dürfte auf fast jedem Gerät die Facebook zu finden sein. Die Facebook-App dürfte damit auch das meist-installierte iOS-App sein. Als kleiner Vergleich: «Facebook for Blackberry» hat derzeit 58 Millionen ‘monatlich aktive Benutzer’, «Facebook for Android» deren 12 Millionen und «Facebook for Palm webOS» deren knapp 3 Millionen Benutzer.

The TiVo Slide Remote is officially available for sale today, for $89, and will hit Best Buy stores this weekend but TiVo was nice enough to send us one a bit early so we could play. The Slide is considerably shorter than the TiVo Peanut we've come to love, but at the same thickness it slides out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Kindle sales outpace iBooks by 60:1 ratio, author says
Despite Steve Jobs' recent claim that the iBookstore has taken 22 percent of the US e-book market, some authors still report significantly higher sales volume on the Kindle. Author J. A. Naturespace gets a welcome update for iOS 4
We looked at Naturespace Holographic Audio back in May of 2009. I liked it then, and I like it more now. Naturespace is a free iPhone app that plays back carefully recorded natural environments designed for listening on headphones.
The recordings are created using the binaural technique, where two closely spaced microphones approximate the distance between your ears. When you put headphones on, the results can be dramatic and hyper-realistic.

As far as we can tell, the general logic behind touchscreen iMac rumors goes something like this: "Apple is good at touch UIs, so it should build a touchscreen iMac." Unfortunately, the reality of a usable, desirable touchscreen desktop computers has yet to materialize (sorry, HP and Microsoft), and so far Apple has steered clear of those dangerous waters. An international patent recently unearthed at the World Intellectual Property Organization, however, shows just how Apple might go about a touch UI on a desktop computer.

Google commits to Goggles for iPhone by late 2010
Google on Monday clarified its promise to release Google Goggles for iPhone. Speaking at Stanford University's Hot Chips conference, Goggles head David Petrou committed to having the iPhone version available by the end of this year. New Android anti-piracy system easily cracked
Google's recently implemented anti-piracy system for developers has proven to be largely ineffective, white hat hacker Justin Case discovered today. Despite supposedly giving tighter reins over apps, Android License Verification Library (ALVL) has been cracked quickly by making a simple code patch that tricks Android into believing an app has a valid license to run on the system. In a demo to Android Police, case noted the approach doesn't require root access to the OS and could be automated to use a script to patch apps for inexperienced users.

Google app gets updated with push notification for Gmail
After many months of users having to resort to third-party or jailbroken apps to get push notifications from Gmail, Google has finally released an updated version of its iPhone app that now handily does that all for you.
The update -- which is now freely available in the App Store -- allows you to sign into one or several Google accounts and set up Gmail and Google Calendar push events, which work just as you'd expect.
