Bose intros IE2, MIE2 and MIE2i in-ear headphones, only charges an arm for 'em
In an obvious non-Bose move, the company has just outed a trio of products that actually seem reasonably priced. Of course, it's not like the outfit is suddenly catering to the low-end market, but those willing to pay a Benjamin or so for a decent set of 'buds now have three more to consider. The IE2 has been engineered for portable media players, while the MIE2 and MIE2i are both designed to handle calls and tunes. The latter, as you'd surmise, is designed specifically to control a range of iDevices, though the whole group ships with StayHear tips that supposedly stay lodged for longer regardless of activity. HBO plans iPad access, skips Netflix
HBO provided mixed news for the fate of its video services in an interview on Tuesday. HBO co-president Eric Kessler told Bloomberg that an adaptation of HBO Go for the iPad and other handhelds should be ready within six months. He didn't explain if there was a cost, but HBO Go has usually been limited to being a free bonus for those who already subscribe to a TV package with HBO.

Snow Leopard Graphics Update available
Apple has released a Snow Leopard graphics update to address some graphical issues introduced in Apple's 10.6.4 update for OS X. Specifically, the update fixes frame rate issues with Valve's games Portal and Team Fortress 2, and it fixes a problem that may have caused Aperture 3 or StarCraft II to crash or become unresponsive. The update also resolves graphics corruption issues brought on by disconnecting and reconnecting external displays while a Mac is running.
The graphical issues with Valve's games following the 10.6.4 update received a fair bit of publicity. Fortunately, this update should resolve those issues. Let us know in the comments how it goes for you.

Briefly: CinemaView Duo $50 rebate, ProteMac Meter 3.7
CinemaView is currently providing a $50 rebate for the CV Duo, an accessory that extends a Mac's desktop across two external monitors. For the Duo to work the monitors must be exactly the same model, and use identical resolutions. To qualify for the rebate people must submit a form, and provide proof-of-purchase for two CV 24-inch LCDs. Any purchase date for the monitors qualifies. Apple Discussion Boards to receive major overhaul
The Apple Discussion Boards have long been a great source of help for Apple end-users and professionals looking for both Apple-supplied and community-supplied assistance. In my personal experience, though, it can sometimes be a frustrating place to visit.
Apple has announced that what has been known as "Apple Discussion Boards" will be renamed "Apple Support Communities" and sport some new functionality and design elements.

Macgamestore.com is publishing two new games, Frankenstein - The Dismembered Bride and Making Mr. Right. In the former, players help Brad find his missing wife Janet, who ends up transformed into a monster. NAB, RIAA would force MP3 players, phones to carry FM radio
The NAB and RIAA have proposed a compromise for a bill that could theoretically force all portable media devices to include FM radios. Under a yet to be formal suggestion for the Performance Rights Act, they would allow $100 million in performance royalties a year but would demand FM chips in MP3 players, smartphones and many other devices. Supporters have argued to Ars Technica and to legislators that forced radio would provide "more music choices."

FedEx delivery person robbed of Apple gear by co-workers
Somehow I think there's an easier way for a FedEx employee to steal electronic goods.
Last week, a California FedEx driver was held at gunpoint by four masked men, forced to hand over his delivery truck's shipments. Among the items in the cargo area were boxes of Apple products, though it's not clear what they were.
As usual, the suspects bumbled the heist by allowing the license plate of their getaway vehicle to lead right to one of the suspects. One suspect, though, just so happened to be a FedEx employee who worked in the same area as the held-up driver. Apparently he saw what was being loaded in the co-worker's truck and made his hasty plan.

Portion of Pink Floyd albums vanish from iTunes
In the wake of an expired EMI contract, finished on June 30th, several popular Pink Floyd albums have disappeared from the iTunes Store. The contract covered albums following 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, and as a result means albums like Animals and The Wall have been pulled as separate entities. They can still be bought as a part of the Oh By the Way boxset, which costs $140. Some individual songs can also be downloaded.

Running has changed quite a bit as an activity over the last decade or so. Moisture-wicking (or "technical") clothing has become commonplace, portable media players are small and light enough to not be a hinderance, and GPS watches and other gadgets have emerged on the scene and rapidly come down in price. Vimeo starts up HTML5 embedded video for iPad, hits Roku
Vimeo today gave owners of iPads, iPhones and future Android devices the option of viewing most of its video in an HTML5 embedded player. The new approach automatically switches between Flash and HTML5 and will automatically switch to the appropriate format depending on the device and software. Photojojo has real camera lenses available for your iPhone
I love the camera on the iPhone 4, but I've always disliked digital zoom and do whatever I can to avoid using it. Photojojo has responded to my inner camera snob with two glass lenses that can be attached to the phone via a magnetic ring.
You can always rig an existing camera lens to your phone, and the progress on the iPhone DSLR project is amazing, but this looks to be a more portable solution. A fisheye lens is available for $25 and a wide angle/macro lens is $20. You can get both together for $40.

The leaks weren't wrong, they just weren't the whole story. A 160GB PlayStation 3 Slim is indeed coming to the US -- Europe, too -- but additionally, there's a heftier 320GB Sports Champions Move bundle. Intel gets working samples of 25nm, 3 bit per cell flash
Intel's NAND flash memory leapt forward on Tuesday with news it had made the first samples of three bit-per-cell (3BPC), 25 nanometer storage. The development made with Micron is denser still than existing 25nm memory and can hold 8GB of content with 20 percent less of a footprint than traditional storage. Media players, flash memory cards and USB drives could all increase in capacity without growing in size, Intel said.

In the fast-changing world of smartphone design, often the most valuable thing that a company can own is a patent for a specific feature they've invented. No matter how seemingly trivial the design feature is, a company like Apple will seek patent protection in order to maintain the uniqueness of their product.
Three years ago, Apple filed for patents on two features that iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users see every day -- the Slide to Unlock feature of the Lock screen and the pop-up letters that appear when you're typing on the iPhone keyboard. iPad now eating into Mac sales?
iPad sales are beginning to affect not just Windows PCs, but Macs as well, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. The argument is based on new NPD Group numbers for July, which show US Mac sales growing 14 percent year-over-year, actually beating the prior month's figures and overall computer industry growth of 11 percent. Consumer PC growth slowed to 3 percent year-over-year versus June's 6 percent, and May's 8. Compensating for this was the business market, up 39 percent against 2009.

Sharpie Liquid Pencil doesn't dry like a Sharpie
We were pretty excited about the Sharpie Liquid Pencil when we first heard about it -- it uses liquid graphite to write like a pen, erase like a pencil, and (supposedly) dry like a permanent marker after three days. Well, it's been six days since our first hands-on, and we've got some bad news: we can still erase what we've written pretty easily. Apple already said testing NFC-equipped iPhone prototypes
Apple's plans for an iPhone with near-field wireless gained solidity today as a rumor claimed that prototypes already exist. The company is reportedly testing NFC chips made by NXP Semiconductor and is already using them for mobile payment tests. A fresh new entry that deserves notice is Tafl, a pretty and interesting abstract strategy game that has existed in Northern Europe since at least 400 C.E. Apple supplier kickback scandal expands
The scope of a recent kickback scheme -- allegedly headed by Apple executive Paul Shin Devine -- is continuing to expand, says Reuters. A South Korean earphone and headset maker, Cresyn, is now reported to have signed a contract with Devine in 2007, paying him a "small consulting fee" in return for "general information about US markets." Cresyn produces the earbuds bundled with iPods.

I've been a member of Best Buy's rewards program for a little while now -- as long as I'm spending way too much of my hard-earned money at the big box retailer, I figure I might as well try to get some of it back. Apple has actually been using Liquidmetal's alloys for a couple of years, albeit in a limited capacity, says one of the technology's co-inventors, Atakan Peker. Sony unveils gaming headsets with 7.1-channel surround
Sony dipped into gaming audio today with a pair of over-ear headsets with a pair of new features. Topping these, the DR-GA500 has an external audio processor that decodes 7.1-channel surround sound with Dolby Pro Logic IIx to create the surround effect without elaborate drivers. Soundrop isn't really a game -- it's more of a musical instrument, although you can play with it for quite a while. The app presents a small hole that constantly drops balls out at a certain rate, while you draw lines on the screen with your finger. Where the balls hit the lines, a tone is sounded, and by positioning the lines in the right places, you can make an interesting sort of music. The app itself calls it "musical geometry," and it is surprisingly fun, even if you aren't a musician. Frisch von Nokia kommt das X3-02, das einen 2,4-Zoll resistiven QVGA Touchscreen mit einer ganz normalen Handytastatur kombiniert. I've been a Verizon FiOS subscriber since the day it rolled out in my neighborhood, and I couldn't be happier (my bank account's demeanor is another story). It is written and read by Sam Cutler, the tour manager of the Rolling Stones and later the Grateful Dead in the late 60's and early 70's. Qualcomm will Snapdragon mit 1,5 GHz noch dieses Jahr liefern

Schmiergeld-Affäre: Apple-Manager plädiert auf unschuldig
Am Montag hat der angeklagte Apple-Einkaufschef Paul Shin Devine vor Gericht auf unschuldig plädiert. Devine soll asiatische Hersteller mit Informationen über noch unveröffentlichte Produkte versorgt und dafür über eine Million Dollar Schmiergeld erhalten haben, so steht es in der Anklageschrift. Ein ein asiatischer Zulieferbetrieb hat indes zugegeben, Maklerprovision an einen Zwischenhändler überwiesen zu haben.

Forscher testen Handys mit Gebärdenspracherkennung
Ingenieure der University of Washington (UW) haben eine Videokompressionssoftware entwickelt, die es ermöglicht, Gebärdensprache per Videohandy zu übertragen. MobileASL - ASL steht für American Sign Language - nutzt den Kompressionsstandard H.264/MPEG-4 AVC mit dem Codec x264. Die Kompressionsrate ist damit fast doppelt soch hoch wie bei MPEG-2.

Orange kündete diesen Sommer an, dass man noch dieses Jahr den Schweizer Mobilfunk mit einem neuen Abo-Konzept revolutionieren werde. Nun hat Orange heute eben dieses neue Konzept vorgestellt — es heisst «Orange Me» und erlaubt laut Orange das zusammenstellen eines «ganz persönlichen Abonnements à la carte».
Orange schreibt: «Die Kunden bezahlen nur die Leistungen, die sie wirklich wollen und nutzen. Orange setzt mit Orange Me im Schweizer Mobilfunkmarkt neue Massstäbe punkto Einfachheit, Transparenz und Flexibilität der Angebote. Darüber hinaus senkt Orange mit dem neuen Angebot die Tarife markant.»
Man stelle sich vor, man hätte beim Einkaufen des täglichen Bedarfs anstelle einer breiten Auswahl in den Regalen nur vorabgefüllte Einkaufskörbe, in denen nur teilweise drin ist, was man wirklich will – eigentlich unvorstellbar. Wherever you live, lightning can be dangerous if you spend a lot of time outdoors. In the USA alone, an average of 58 people per year are killed by proximity to lightning strikes. Apple supplier admits to payments amid kickback allegations
Pegatron has admitted that one of its subsidiary companies, Kaedar Electronics, paid brokerage commission to an intermediary for services related to its Apple contracts. Kaedar is one of several companies reportedly involved in a kickback scheme spearheaded by Apple executive Paul Shin Devine, who was arrested late last week.

Now, two of our favorite things in the world just so happen to be ice cream and robots. So combining the two could only lead to awesome things, right? Well, that's Yaskawa-kun is: a robot that vends ice cream. And yes, it's super fantastic. Verizon demos nearly 1Gbps on its current FiOS network
Verizon said on Monday that it has successfully tested its current gigabit passive optical network (GPON) to send data at near 1 gigabit-per-second speeds. At the bandwidth, which runs 200 times the 50Mbps it normally offers today, the bandwidth exists to support 3D TV, near-perfect desktop virtualization and remote storage, the carrier said. Verizon's platform can theoretically support even faster 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream speeds.

Code shows future iOS devices currently in testing
I don't know how much of a newsflash it really is that Apple is working on brand new versions of the iPhone and iPad, but just in case you thought that the current iterations were the last, let's set the record straight. Code in the latest iOS release shows that Apple is currently working on "unreleased hardware." The code, which bypasses the required iTunes activation, assuming that you have the right hardware, tends to show up before an iPhone revision -- in other words, while the new hardware is out, about, running the iOS system, and in testing. The code then disappears as the hardware goes off to launch.

Pre Plus out of stock online at Verizon and AT&T -- so what does it mean?
We can all agree that some fresh product is desperately overdue out of Sunnyvale, so the eternal optimists in us want to believe that the departure of the Pre Plus from Verizon's and AT&T's warehouses right now means that we can expect new goodies soon. Of course, it's entirely possible that the two carriers just happened to run out of phones at the same time and that fresh batches are on their way, so it's too early to say these phones are out for the count; then again, when you consider that Sprint somehow still sells the Centro, anything's possible. Meizu M9 may ape iPhone 4 with 960x640 screen
Meizu chief Jack Wong has set out plans to match Apple once again in a recent post on his company's forums. He now expects the next phone, the M9, to use a 3.54-inch, 960x640 screen very similar if not identical to the iPhone 4's.
