Steam endlich auch für den Mac verfügbar!
Wie bereits angekündigt, ist Steam nun endlich auch für den Mac erhältlich. Die offizielle Ankündigung seitens Valve wird jedoch noch erwartet. Die Server sind bereits jetzt schon sehr überlastet und hier und da wurde auch noch ein Bug gesichtet. Dennoch ist Valve zuversichtlich im Hinblick auf die “neu gewonnene” Fan-Gemeinde.

Sony posts another huge annual loss, but PS3 sales are up
Sony just posted its yearly results today, and while a ¥40.8 billion ($439 million) loss is never a good thing, it's at least a marked improvement from last year's staggering $1 billion drop into the red, which was the company's first loss in 14 years. LCD TVs and cameras were Sony's big electronics sellers, while PS3 sales went up to 13 million from 10.1 million last year -- and hey, Sony's console actually became profitable at the end of the year as production costs have gone down. Now for the bad news: PSP sales were down to 9.9m from 14.4 last year, with game sales dropping to 44.4m from 50.3m units, while PS2 hardware went down

Apple posts first major updates for iWork for iPad
Apple has updated all three apps in the iPad iWork suite, bringing their versions up to v1.1. Pages has gained support for several new languages, including Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Spanish and simplified Chinese. Some of these will be essential for international iPad users, who should get access to the iWork suite on or around May 28th.

Create keyboard shortcuts to jump to Safari 4 tabs directly
Filed under: AppleScriptMy friend Steve (no, not that Steve) just solved a problem I've had for awhile now: how to jump to a specific tab in Safari using the keyboard. Turns out that it's possible, and it's free, and it works pretty well. What else could you ask for?

Toshiba demos iPod touch with tactile interface
Future Apple handhelds could potentially offer feedback when touched, a Toshiba technology demonstration hints. At this week's Embedded Systems Expo in Tokyo, the company is showing off an iPod touch with a special film on top. Based on a Finnish technology known as "Senseg E-Sense," the film helps to generate small electrical field changes that can nevertheless be felt by human fingers. Resistance can be simulated when sliding open a door, for instance, and buttons can be made to feel as if they protrude.

HP intros three low-priced monitors
HP will soon launch three new low-priced monitors, including the 20-inch 20-inch S2031, 21.5-inch S2231 and 23-inch S2331. Each has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, VGA and HDCP-compliant DVI-D connections, as well as two-lamp panels rather than four-lamp units for lower power draw than most screens. Apple has released updates to its iWork suite of applications for the iPad. Let's buy an iPad at Walmart
Filed under: iPadIn an interview with Gary Severson, Walmart's senior vice president of entertainment for US stores, Bloomberg learned that the retail giant intends to carry the iPad sometime in 2010. "We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year," Severson said, without providing any specifics.
Walmart has been making a push towards selling more electronics, adding more and more TVs, Blu-Ray players and so on to their shelves. Right now, Apple and Best Buy are the only US dealers selling iPads.

Bing turn-by-turn navigation for Windows Mobile gets taken for a test drive
Microsoft certainly added all the right features to its Bing navigation app for Windows Mobile, but does it actually deliver the goods in real world use? It does according to the folks at PocketNow, who have put the app through its paces and kindly provided a quick demo video of it running on an HTC HD2. Ngmoco buys Stumptown Game Machine, EA and Gameloft report revenue growth

PSP 2 rumored as Sony's existing PSP sales plummet
Sony may be planning a frequently requested update to the PSP, according to some new clues revealed today. One publisher for the handheld is believed by MCV to be waiting on an announcement from Sony, possibly for hardware, before it can talk about new games; two more important developers are significantly increasing their marketing money for the fall this year. Such steps are sometimes precursors to a new console as Sony and others often use in-development titles as key selling points for new systems.

OnLive gaming service teams up with UK provider BT
Streaming gaming service OnLive has partnered with UK telecoms provider BT to bring its service to customers' homes. Under the deal, BT will own 2.6 percent of OnLive and get exclusive rights to bundle the service with its broadband service. The service is expected to come to the US this summer.

Apple updates the iWork suite for iPad
Filed under: iPadiWork users rejoice! Apple is updating Pages, Numbers and Keynote for the iPad. A quick check at the app store or through iTunes should get you all sparkly and new.
In Pages, one of the big fixes is that the tool and ruler and now available in Landscape view. That's a biggy because you had to be in portrait view to see any of those tools in version 1.0.
Apple has also added some additional language support in the apps, and done some work to get better compatibility with Microsoft Word documents. Here's the details for all the updated apps, which appear to have fixed some of the worst complaints people had.TUAW

Fujitsu's curved plasma displays make Roman columns look a little dated
What, your plasma display is flat? How very quaint! Fujitsu would like to make you feel a little less adequate by showing you the wonder that is a curved PDP, seen here stretched around a column for the sake of providing digital signage. Hulu sides with Flash over HTML5, updates existing site

iWork-Apps: Apple aktualisiert iPad-Anwendungen
In einem Rutsch hat Apple soeben die drei im AppStore erhältlichen iWork-Applikationen Pages (US AppStore-Link), Keynote (US AppStore-Link) und Numbers (US AppStore-Link) auf Version 1.1 aktualisiert. Neben zahlreichen kleinen Verbesserungen und den üblichen Fehlerbehebungen bietet das komplette iWork-Paket nun die Unterstützung für acht weitere Sprachen - unter anderem Deutsch - ist bislang aber nur im amerikanischen AppStore erhältlich. You've got to hand it to Litl -- even after the Webbook failed to impress, the startup is still trudging though the gadget trenches. Fujitsu shows off 3D-enabled desktop PC, Lenovo prepping 3D laptop?
We're not sure there are any PC makers not working on 3D-enabled desktops and laptops at this point, but it looks like we can now add two more to the watch list: Fujitsu and Lenovo. Of the two, Fujitsu is by far the most forthcoming, as it's actually now showing off an all-in-one desktop PC that not only packs a 3D LCD, but a built-in 3D camera that will let you capture 3D images and video that can be viewed with the included 3D glasses. Skype skipping Windows Phone 7 app for Android, iPhone
Skype's Asia-Pacific VP Dan Neary hurt Microsoft's mobile OS plans today by stating that the company wouldn't develop a version of its VoIP app for Windows Phone 7. Evoluce 47-inch HD multitouch display gets off-screen gesture control
Evoluce, the manufacturers of that mammoth 47-inch full HD touchscreen, are out of control! Apparently, they've decided that unlimited simultaneous touch inputs (and thus unlimited simultaneous phalanges) was not enough, so they've gone an' added gesture support -- up to half a meter from the device. MSI to show Windows 7-based Slatebook tablet
MSI will bring a tablet PC to the Computex show in Tainwan at the start of June that will be powered by one of Intel's Atom Z-series processors. Furthermore, the device will be priced at under $500, Digitimes said, claiming unnamed sources in the industry. Dubbed the Slatebook, the device is said to sport a 10-inch display, 3G, Wi-Fi and run on Windows 7.

Latest iPhone prototype leaked by a duo of phone dealers
Filed under: iPhoneThe Associated Press is reporting today that two Vietnamese phone dealers may be responsible for the most recent 4G iPhone leak. When mobile phone accessory salesman Tran Manh Hiep heard that someone was showing off a prototype iPhone in a Ho Chi Minh City cafe, he rushed there with his video camera to see it. The AP notes that another dealer, whose identity is unknown, had the phone. How he came into it is still a mystery.

Jetzt offiziell: iPad ist der neue Newton

Gerade ist die neue Werbung für das iPad rausgekommen. Ihr wisst schon, diese Multimediaflunder. Und was macht Apple? Die covern einfach eine Werbung die sie vor fast 20 Jahren schon mal gebracht haben. Damals für den Newton. Den Witz "und bald kann er auch elektronische Mail schicken" durch "und bald kann er auch Flash zeigen" zu ersetzen haben sie aber leider nicht gebracht. Beide Videos zum Vergleich nach dem Break. Hulu says HTML5 'doesn't yet meet all of our customers' needs'
As you may be aware, Hulu rolled out an updated version of its video player today, but what you may not have noticed is that the company also took advantage of the occasion to briefly talk about HTML5. People shouldn't panic at the absence of Mac categories at this year's 2010 Apple Design Awards, says Steve Jobs. Plastic Logic plans 2012 launch for color e-paper display
E-readers as a whole best be watching their backs (or planning a wave of new functions, one), but it's safe to say that having color displays would give 'em a leg-up on the retina-killing, battery-draining LCD-based alternatives. Dell puts out two budget IPS-based displays
Dell has quietly added a pair of LCDs to its lineup that get the mainstream using color-accurate displays. The 21.5-inch U2211H and 23-inch U2311H both output at 1080p using higher-quality IPS (in-plane switching) panels. Their performance isn't yet public but should provide more color and wider viewing angles than same-size LCDs with TN or PVA panels.

Google's upcoming Android 2.2 will have built-in data tethering when it ships, a firmware leak confirmed today. The software will share an Android phone's cellular link over USB and will be integrated with a new hotspot feature. I'm trying to figure out how to print from my iPad. I use mine, which is an awesome 64GB WiFi+3G system, for school and work. A 16GB Wi-Fi iPad is the only computer my mother has. My mom does have a wireless printer at home connected to my Dad's computer.
We both use Windows (XP and 7 respectively) and HP printers.
I've been round and round in the App Store and can't make sense out of all of the so-called printer apps in it. Help!

Updated Skype for iPad, next iPhone due mid-year
Skype will release the first iPad-native version of its VoIP app this summer, or according to the company's Asia-Pacific VP, Dan Neary. While the current iPhone app works on the iPad, it is not designed for the platform, which entails using more screen space and/or expanding features. Coming at roughly the same time should be a new iPhone app, at a minimum supporting v4.0 firmware features such as multitasking.

Walmart aims at selling iPad before end of 2010

Adobe today ramped up a Freedom of Choice ad campaign criticizing Apple for its attitude toward Flash. Kennen wir, finden wir gut. Natürlich ist gerade das Tethering eine Sache, die Mobilfunk-Provider gar nicht sexy finden und in der Regel blocken oder sich teuer bezahlen lassen. Manchmal dauert es bis der richtige Preis für ein neues Gerät gefunden ist - vor allem, wenn es um den deutschen Markt geht. Hobby artist creates paintings on the iPad
Filed under: iPadObama Pacman's got a few cool paintings by an artist named John Haasl. The unique thing about these paintings is that Haasl created them exclusively with the iPad. While a lot of the talk around the iPad has centered on the device as a content consumer, content creation is definitely easier in one big area with a much larger touchscreen, and of course, that's art. Kindle DX trial at Darden concludes it's academically woeful, personally enjoyable
Amazon's experiment of replacing textbooks with Kindle DXs in classrooms already took a pretty hefty blow from Princeton's feedback -- which described the jumbo e-reader as "a poor excuse" for an academic tool -- but here comes some more punishment courtesy of the trialists at Darden. The Business School describes the DX as clunky and too slow to keep up with the pace of teaching, with up to 80 percent of users saying they wouldn't recommend it for academic use.

Next iPhone to match 3GS in price; CDMA built in August?
Apple is likely to bring the cost of materials back up to where it was a year ago when it releases the next iPhone, according to an early estimate. While making a 16GB iPhone 3GS has dropped to about $156, the new model is expected by UBM TechInsights to go back up to between $169 to $175, or about as much as the previous phone did when new. The phone's biggest price hike would come from a higher resolution screen that could cost $25, or $9 more than it does now.

TUAW's Daily App: Silent Hunter Mobile

The Silent Hunter series is largely accepted as the pinnacle of submarine simulation. The PC and console games are pretty much the best way to feel like you're in charge of a real old-school submarine. Ubisoft currently owns the license, and they've now released an iPhone version of the brand, which has you piloting a German U-boat around the North Sea in 1939. It lacks most of the depth (pun intended, sorry) that Silent Hunter is known for; the game is basically a shooting gallery, and while there is a bit of strategy in ship placement, the plan is mostly to kill the other side before they kill you.
Still, it's fun, and except for a little bit of lag in the controls

HTC schlägt zurück: Beschwerde gegen Apple

Schwachstellen in Safari und Opera
Aufgrund der wachsenden Beliebtheit der Browser-Alternativen zum Internet Explorer von Microsoft nehmen auch die Angriffe auf diese zu. Trend Micro warnt in diesem Zusammenhang vor neuen Schwachstellen in Safari und Opera, durch die Cyberkriminelle die Kontrolle über den infizierten Rechner erlangen können.
Die neue Schwachstelle in Apple Safari 4.0.5 für Windows lässt es zu, dass ein Fensterobjekt gelöscht wird, auch wenn noch Referenzen vorhanden sind. Damit wird jedes Mal, wenn ein spezieller Script Code versucht, das gelöschte Objekt zu nutzen, ein ungültiger Zeiger erzeugt. Das bedeutet, dass der Zeiger über den Java Script Code ferngesteuert werden kann. iPad jetzt auch mit Mikro-SIM der Telekom bestellbar
Die Telekom ist wie bereits angekündigt neben Vodafone und O2 Apples dritter offizieller Mobilfunkpartner für das iPad. Die späte Kommunikation dieser Tatsache dürfte auf interne Probleme zurückzuführen sein, nun allerdings ist auch die Integration in den Bestellvorgang abgeschlossen und man kann mit einem UMTS-iPad neben den Karten der beiden anderen Anbieter auch eine bereits aktivierte Mikro-SIM-Karte der Telekom im Apple Store auswählen.
Wer eine der auch "3FF-SIM" genannten Mikro-SIM-Karten bestellt, erhält nicht zwangsläufig eine kleinere Karte, die nur noch in Geräten mit passendem Mikro-SIM-Slot verwendet werden kann. Laut unseren Informationen wird zumindest die Telekom eine doppelt vorgestanzte Plastikkarte ausliefern, die der Anwender dann wahlweise auf das klassische SIM-Format oder das neue, deutlich kleinere Mikro-SIM-Format ausbrechen kann.

Alle iPads ohne Urheberrechtsabgabe
Das Thema Urheberrechtsabgabe scheint im Zusammenhang mit dem iPad nun endgültig erledigt: inzwischen kosten auch die beiden größten Modelle mit 699 bzw. 799 Euro genauso viel wie beispielsweise in Frankreich oder Italien.
Für Unsicherheit hatte die Anfang Mai festgesetzte Urheberrechtsabgabe für PCs gesorgt. Apple hatte ursprünglich angenommen, dass die Gebühr in Höhe von rund 15 Euro bei allen iPad-Modellen anfällt. Später wurden die Preise für die kleineren iPad-Modelle entsprechend der Definition, dass die Abgabe nur für PCs mit mehr als 40 GB Speicherplatz erhoben wird wieder gesenkt. Anscheinend konnte nun endgültig geklärt werden, dass das iPad im Zusammenhang mit der Urheberrechtsabgabe nicht als PC eingestuft wird. Frühbesteller können davon ausgehen, dass Apple den günstigeren Kaufpreis verrechnet bzw. den Aufpreis rückerstattet.

Skype, the godfather of VoIP apps and an increasingly ubiquitous piece of mobile as well as desktop software, has just let it be known that it's not planning on bringing its goodies to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS. I really enjoyed seeing this retro handset base for the iPhone (even if I did mistake the shipping charge for the price -- sorry about that). Now, iPhone Savior has a nice piece up about the base's designer, Florida artist Scott Freeland. 4G shocker! The good people of Boston enjoy Verizon's trial LTE network
You know what makes us happy? Pizza. But a close second has to be 4G technology, which makes us truly envy the Bostonians who were treated to a sample of Verizon's trial LTE deployment in the friendly confines of a downtown pizza joint last month. Pavtube releases DVD and Blu-ray conversion software
Pavtube Studio has added to its line of video conversion software with the release of iMedia Converter for Mac. The program works as an audio and video conversion tool capable of ripping DVD and Blu-ray movies. The conversion process is claimed to maintain all aspects of a movie including commentary, menus, titles and ads. When working with high-definition videos, users can compress or recode the data into other formats without losing HD resolution. USB hubs with independently switchable ports to disable vampire power draw are nothing new, but this unit from iMONO takes things to the next delightfully absurd level, with a full complement of 13 ports -- enough for an entire army of undead novelty flash drives. HTC Evo 4G ships June 4, hotspot to cost $30 per month
Sprint tonight firmed up its launch plans for the HTC Evo 4G. The Android flagship will ship June 4th and will cost $200 on a two-year contract after handing in a $100 rebate. Its touted hotspot feature will cost extra, however, and will need an extra $30 per month on top of the existing smartphone plan to share the 3G or 4G connection with eight other devices.

Apple leads Consumer Reports ranks for cellphone stores
Apple has achieved the top spot in yet another Consumer Reports ranking, with the company's retail outlets considered the best place to buy a cellphone. Despite the lack of selection and relatively high price of the iPhone, respondents to the survey gave Apple Stores an average score of 86 out of 100.

Time Warner and Verizon bring TBS, TNT content to FiOS TV Online
Verizon gave some FiOS subscribers access to on-demand content from TBS and TNT in its FiOS TV Online trials way back in August of last year, but the company has just now announced that it'll finally be launching the service for all FiOS TV customers sometime next month. That will thankfully be a free service, and will give you on-demand access to shows like The Closer, Southland, and Lopez Tonight in "HD video quality" within 24 hours after they air on television. Steam für Mac nun erschienen
Vor wenigen Stunden hat die größte Spieleplattform des Internets nun auch ihre Pforten für Mac-User geöffnet. Steam für den Mac bietet in Zukunft Zugriff auf alle Spiele mit der so genannten Source Engine. Den Start macht das weltweit sehr erfolgreiche Puzzle-Spiel Portal, welches man bis zum 24. Mai sogar kostenlos testen kann, da Valve noch ein paar Tests durchführen muss. Key Android exec leaves Google for Facebook
Google suffered a symbolic loss on Wednesday as its Senior Product Manager for Android said he would leave the company for Facebook effective Monday. He didn't explain his exact duties at the social network but said he would help "innovate at the intersect of mobile and social," suggesting his phone OS work will carry over. Neither of the involved companies has yet to comment or indicate who would take Tseng's place.

Pegatron making CDMA iPhones?
Pegatron has been contracted to make a CDMA iPhone, insiders claimed today. The scoop is short but would have the ASUS manufacturing arm building phones that would likely go to Verizon and possibly other carriers as well. A deal would help Pegatron take off as a major supplier, DigiTimes said.
