BodyTrace rolls out GSM-enabled eScale
Sure, a WiFi-equipped scale may be good enough for most people -- since, you know, you're likely to keep your scale in your house -- but it looks like those not satisfied do now have another option in the form of BodyTrace's new GSM-enabled eScale. Of course, the big advantage here is ease of setup rather than portability, since you'll be able to automatically (and privately) upload your weight to BodyTrace website without having to first mess with WiFi settings and whatnot. DiglloydTools 2.0 adds SSD performance enhancement tools
Diglloyd has released an update to its Mac performance optimization suite, diglloydTools. Version 2.0 features performance enhancement for solid-state drives (SSDs). The recondition command is claimed to restore performance on SSDs that begin to show deteriorating transfer speeds, especially with write operations on older drives.

Briefly: PhoneView adds iPad support, Spare Backup for Mac
Ecamm Network has released an update to PhoneView, a utility for accessing files on Apple's mobile devices. The software allows users to export music, contacts, photos, voicemail, text and multimedia messages, and call log data to a Macintosh computer. The 2.4 update includes full support for the iPad, including the ability to download e-books. Additionally the update includes enhancements to the SMS/MMS viewing feature, along with the ability to export data as a PDF. PhoneView is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later and can be purchased online for $20.

Leica near launching V-Lux20 compact megazoom
Leica is on the verge of launching a new compact camera as one of its most affordable models. A leak of the V-Lux20 shows it to be an upscale version of Panasonic's Lumix ZS7 with the same 12X, 25-300mm zoom. The point of reference would dictate the built-in GPS, 12-megapixel sensor, HD video recording and three-inch preview LCD.

BenQ outs LCDs with 12,000,000:1 contrast
BenQ this week unveiled its GL series of LED-backlit monitors with the 18.5-inch GL930, 19-inch GL931, 20-inch GL2030, 21.5-inch GL2230 and 22-inch GL2231. Each has what BenQ is calling the industry's highest 12,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, along with a 5ms response time. BenQ also spent some time and resources designing the GL monitors to be attractive, with a bubble pattern in the decorative trim below the screen bezel that carries on on the backside on the ventilation grille.

The dictionary defines "doxy" as a lover or mistress, so it's not surprising that the new Doxie portable scanner from Apparent has pink hearts as a defining graphic feature. The hearts are in the dock when you have the Doxie software running, there's a pink heart over the "i" in Doxie, there's a string of eight progressively smaller pink hearts along the front of the device, and to scan, you push a big button with a pink heart on it.

AMD vermeldet Gewinne im ersten Quartal

Belkin has introduced nine new sleeves and protective cases in its line of iPad accessories. Two new sleeves in the lineup include the Cap and the Contour. Both items come in three different colors -- Plum, Violet Mist, or Caviar/Gray -- and are designed to be compact for easy carrying when not wrapped around an iPad. Sony announces 'division two' series of VAIO laptops built by other manufacturers
Well, here's a bit of a surprise. In an interview with PC Pro, the deputy president of Sony's VAIO Business Group, Ryosuke Akahane, has revealed that the company will soon be effectively splitting its laptop business into two distinct groups. The first, called "division one," will continue with laptops designed and built by Sony as before, but the second, or "division two," will rely on laptops built by other manufacturers. Those behind-the-scenes changes may not be readily apparent to consumers, however, as the so-called division two laptops will still carry the VAIO name, and will apparently have the same "taste of VAIO" and "style of VAIO," with Sony naturally first approving all third-party designs. Apple #56 in Fortune 500 rankings
Filed under: Apple CorporateApple has moved up 15 sports in Fortune's annual Fortune 500 rankings to be the 56th largest company in the world by revenues. Apple had 2009 revenues of US$36.5 billion in 2009, up 12.5% from 2008. Despite the massive revenues, Apple still ranks third, behind HP (ranked 10th overall) and Dell (ranked 38th overall), in Fortune's "Computers, Office Equipment" industry rankings.

HTC readying Android tablet with 1080p video recording?
HTC South Africa's Quinton Leigh has reportedly slipped word that the company is developing a high-end Android tablet. The device, which could alternately be a very high-end smartphone, would have 1080p video recording and would even use a new Yamaha chipset to output 5.1-channel surround sound. Leigh also implied that there would be 3G access built-in as it might not be suitable for the high prices of South African cell data.

Early Vue 8.5 release adds, upgrades scenery tools
e-on is now distributing a prerelease version of Vue 8.5, the next update of the developer's 3D rendering toolset. The software generates, animates and renders natural environments, in most editions for other platforms, such as 3DS Max, Maya and Cinema4D. The v8.5 update incorporates many changes, for instance adding new sculpting tools in the form of Flatten, Plateau, UniSlope and a bitmap reference image display.

MPAA, RIAA want AV software with anti-piracy scanning
The MPAA and RIAA have sent a response to the Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator that would call for software to spy on users for potential piracy. Answering a request for comments, the music and movie studios would like antivirus software to include tools for "managing copyright infringement" and block or report copyrighted material it finds.

New HDMI adapters arrive for new, old MacBook Pros
After Apple released new MacBook Pro notebooks Tuesday the company announced the new portables feature Audio out over the Mini DisplayPort connection. While may not have plans for its own branded adapters to provide HDMI with audio, Dr. Bott has announced its Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter II. RED shows working EPIC, puts Scarlet in August
RED as promised showed off a working example of the EPIC. The pro camera on display at NAB took 13 seconds to warm up but could shoot its intended 5K resolution. Its upgraded sensor wasn't given a full test, but in previous teases RED has shown it capable of much better light sensitivity than the 4K sensor in the older RED ONE.

2010 MacBook Pro benchmarks show Core i5/i7 advantage
Benchmark results for Apple's new MacBook Pros show a definite advantage in the switch to Core i5 and i7 processors in high-end models, comments Primate Labs. Verizon today formally launched the Droid Incredible as its new flagship. The smartphone is Verizon's fastest with a 1GHz Snapdragon and also the first on the network to pack an 8-megapixel camera supported by twin LED flashes. Spiegel Online: Video-Angebot wird iPad-tauglich
Vorbereitend auf den nun verzögerten iPad-Start in Deutschland, dürfte es hinter den Kulissen fast aller großen Online-Portale momentan ordentlich zur Sachen gehen. Unter anderem bereitet sich der Spiegel aktuell auf Apples Marktstart des iPads vor und liefert seine Online-Videos seit heute komplett iPad-tauglich als MP4-Datei aus.

News: Apple patent application point to iTunes Concert Ticket system
Patently Apple reports on a new patent application from Apple for a “Concert Ticket+” system. The patent application details a system that would provide an iTunes-based service for purchasing, storing and using concert tickets electronically. SaskTel CEO hints at early July launch for next iPhone
The fourth-generation iPhone should launch by or before July 1st, hints the CEO of regional Canadian carrier SaskTel. Speaking in an interview, Robert Watson comments that the carrier is currently finishing up its 3G network, which should become active by July 1st. A new iPhone will be available for SaskTel subscribers at the same time, says Watson.

Jobs confirms Wi-Fi, 3G iPad launch via email
Filed under: Steve JobsSteve Jobs has emailed a European customer to apologize for the iPad's delay and confirm the company's shipping plans.
9to5 Mac reports on emails sent by two European customers to Steve Jobs asking about the iPad's international release. The first message read, "Will there also be 3G models of the iPad released worldwide on the end of may or only the Wi-Fi models? Would be nice to know. Can't wait." Steve's response was, "Both models will be released at the end of May. Sorry for the delay."
Steve's response to the second email, which asked essentially the same question, was a tidy little, "Yes."

HTC Droid Incredible officially official for Verizon, April 29 for $200
Though some information leaked out of Verizon's pipes yesterday, HTC just got really real with the Droid Incredible at the 99% Conference in New York today. Opera Mini stürmt die iPhone-Download-Charts
Nach Angaben des norwegischen Browserherstellers Opera stößt die iPhone-Version seines gleichnamigen Browsers weltweit auf großes Interesse. Intel claims jury still out on tablets
Intel executives told those at the Developer Forum today not to maintain expectations for the tablet category. Architecture lead David Perlmutter said that the category was "hard to predict" and that Intel would mostly be there to support those that wanted to make tablets over time. Intel Labs chief Justin Rattner echoed the sentiment asnd labeled the iPad and other designs a "third epoch" that still faced uncertain prospects, even if it was more practical.

SPEC nimmt Supercomputing-Benchmark aus München in Sammlung auf

Opera Mini for iPhone passes 1 million downloads on day one
Over 1 million downloads of Opera Mini for the iPhone were made on the first day of the app's availability alone, says Opera. Although the browser has since slipped in markets like Canada, Opera also notes that at one point it dominated the free category of 22 major App Stores, including the US, the UK, France and Germany. VLC Media Player 1.1.0 bringt Hardware-Beschleunigung

Apple jumps to 56th in Fortune 500 rankings
Apple has lept ahead significantly in this year's Fortune 500 list, rising from 71st place to 56th. The chart ranks American companies in terms of size, and as of March 26th the company was estimated to have a market value of close to $209.4 billion. Its assets are said to be valued at over $53.8 billion, and revenues have climbed 12.5 percent since last year to sit at more than $36.5 billion. Profits are disproportionately higher, up 18 percent to about $5.7 billion.

Sony PlayTV getting Facebook, still no love for stateside PS3 owners
Sony PlayTV, the digital TV tuner / DVR for PS3 that is still painfully unavailable in the United States, is getting "great new features," according to the PlayStation Blog. What does that mean for you? Well, if you're in England, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, or the UAE, it means Facebook integration! What else does it mean? Keepin' it real fake: Moonse iPad knockoff loses a few inches, runs Android
This is far from the first iPad knockoff to emerge from KIRF-land, but Moonse's new E-7001 tablet may just be the first to garner some serious interest -- if it ever actually turns up for sale, that is. Supposedly, the tablet will sell for as little as 900 Chinese yuan (or about $130), which will get you a 7-inch touchscreen, a 600MHz Rockchip RK2808 processor (which could possibly be upgraded to a Cortex-A8 before launch), Android 1.5 for an OS, an SD card slot for storage, built-in WiFi, and a promised five hours of battery life. Former Delicious Monster and Tapulous developer Mike Lee (who now works for the mothership at Apple) took the stage to start off the last day of 360iDev in San Jose. He gave a wildly rambling speech about what it means to be an engineer and why programmers should not only make the best programs they can, but actually commit to changing the world for the better. Pwn2Own-Sicherheitslücke beseitigt
Heute hat Apple das lang erwartete Sicherheits-Update 2010-003 für Mac OS X v10.5.8, Mac OS X Server v10.5.8, Mac OS X v10.6.3 und Mac OS X Server v10.6.3 bereit gestellt. Damit wird die oftmals kritisierte Sicherheitslücke geschlossen, die während des Hackerwettbewerbs Pwn2Own bekannt geworden war.

Neues Apple Patent weist auf "Social Online Store" hin
Ein Patent vom 14. Dezember 2009 enthüllt mögliche Pläne für die Zukunft des Apple Onlinestores: So könnten bekannte Web 2.0-Features bald auch das Erlebnis "Onlineshopping" zumindest für Apple-Kunden weitreichend verändern. Der Grund für diese Umstellung ist die Tatsache, dass, anders als im normalen Store, die Kunden im Onlinestore sehr gezielt surfen und daher weniger Geld ausgeben, da virtuelle Spontankäufe eher eine Seltenheit sind. Ändern soll dies eine grundlegende Überarbeitung des Konzepts. Sollte der Store dem Patent auch in der Realität nahe kommen, so wird es eine Ansicht geben, welche Kunden sich wo befinden und wer was kauft. Zusätzlich sollen zahlreiche Möglichkeiten der Kontaktaufnahme dafür sorgen, dass die Kunden sich sowohl untereinander, als auch mit Mitarbeitern

Pantech's Sirius Sky smartphone does Android 2.1 on Snapdragon
One gigahertz is becoming the bar of entry in the world of Android, and the upcoming Sirius Sky from Pantech meets that with its Snapdragon processor. It's also helped along by an Android 2.1 install and a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 OLED screen that does look rather vivid in the above shot -- presumably taken indoors. 500MB of storage is offered internally by the phone while expandable memory bumps things up to 32GB, upon which pictures from the five megapixel camera can be stored for later mockery. The phone is said to be hitting Asian markets "pretty soon" and, while there are rumors of a US release, they're sounding a bit unsubstantiated at this point.

Toshiba's latest HDDs are automotive-grade, dashboard-bound
We'd like to think that platters are a dying breed; that SSD-based mass storage will rule all our computing devices thanks to its increased durability, performance, and efficiency. Olympus PEN update to speed up autofocus
Olympus set out plans on Thursday for a major firmware upgrade for all its PEN Micro Four Thirds cameras. The E-P1, E-P2 and newer E-PL1 will all get faster autofocusing in still photos, regardless of the lens. The older E-P1 and E-P2 will also get the E-PL1's faster continuous autofocusing during movie recording, but only for the long-ranged 14-140mm and wide-angle 9-18mm lenses.

Die Europäische Kommission will eine öffentliche Anhörung zum Thema Netzneutralität noch in diesem Frühjahr. Das hat die EU-Kommissarin für Wettbewerb Neelie Kroes angekündigt. Auf einer Konferenz der französischen Regulierungsbehörde Arcep sagte Kroes, dass "das Internet nicht von Natur aus eine neutrale Plattform" sei. Sinn und Zweck der Aiciti soll es sein, die derzeit sehr zersplitterte Schweizer ICT-Messelandschaft unter einem Dach zusammen zu führen. Wie das SwissITMagazine berichtet, stecken hinter der neuen Messe die Macher der ehemaligen Orbit, der Community36, des Swiss CRM Forum, des Finance Forum, des iDays, des Swiss eHealth Summit und der Topsoft. Die Aiciti dient mehr als Plattform zur Integration mehrerer Messen unter einem Dach, so haben auch ganz andere Konzepte innerhalb der Aiciti Platz, es werden entsprechend noch weitere Partner gesucht, so der Messeleiter. iPhone-Vorstellung am 22. Juni?
Als wir uns gerade von der Vorstellung des iPhone OS 4 erholt haben, kam die Meldung rein: Apple hat im bekannten Yerba Buena Center for Arts in San Francisco am 22. Juni einen Saal gebucht, was terminlich und logisch doch stark nach der Vorstellung des iPhones der vierten Generation riecht. Zum einen passt der Termin zum jährlichen Vorstellungsturnus, auch befindet sich das Center in Nähe des Moscone Centers, in dem die Worldwide Apple Developer Conference stattfindet. Das sind aber natürlich nur Vermutungen - es kann auch gut sein, dass Apple am geannten Termin ein vollkommen anderes Produkt vorstellt.

Microsoft gives us a look through Project Natal's eyes (video)
Ilan Spillinger, Microsoft's Xbox 360 VP, was on hand in Tel Aviv yesterday for a showcase of Project Natal. Although there wasn't much in the way of groundbreaking stuff, the resulting video does show off the motion control system's gender recognition (done through Natal's facial recognition you filthy child) and ability to track two players within the frame at the same time. Rumor: Adobe to sue Apple over SDK rules
Filed under: Apple CorporateThis seemed like it was destined to happen; word out of Silicon Valley is that Adobe is planning a big lawsuit against Apple for keeping Flash off of the iPhone and iPad platforms.
The final straw, apparently, was a change in Apple's SDK language prohibiting apps to be written with anything other than Apple-approved tools, and unfortunately for them, Adobe's solution isn't on that golden list.

EU-Kommissarin Kroes: "Das Internet ist von Natur aus nicht neutral"
Die Europäische Kommission will eine öffentliche Anhörung zum Thema Netzneutralität noch in diesem Frühjahr. Das hat die EU-Kommissarin für Wettbewerb Neelie Kroes angekündigt. Auf einer Konferenz der französischen Regulierungsbehörde Arcep sagte Kroes, dass "das Internet nicht von Natur aus eine neutrale Plattform" sei. Chirp: Nicht alle Twitter Entwickler sind begeistert
Gestern und heute findet in San Francisco die erste Twitter Entwickler-Konferenz statt: Chirp. Das Micro-Blogging-Netzwerk hat bereits über 105 Millionen Nutzer und täglich kommen 300.000 neue hinzu. Neben der geplanten Werbeplattform „Promoted Tweets“ wird das Unternehmen künftig auch einen eigenen URL-Shortener einführen. Ausserdem werde es neben der kostenlosen BlackBerry-Twitter-App und dem geplanten Tweetie-Nachfolger Twitter for iPhone auch offizielle Gratis-Programme für Mac und Android geben. Swisscom & Orange bringen spezielle Preispläne für iPad
Sowohl die Swisscom als auch Orange haben uns auf Anfrage bestätigt, dass die beiden Mobilfunkanbieter per Ende Mai spezielle Preispläne für das iPad in der Schweiz anbieten werden. Die Einzelheiten zu den Tarifen und den Gerätepreisen werden jedoch erst zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt veröffentlicht. Navigon-News: Fehlende D-A-CH-Version, Streit mit Apple und Update 1.5.1
Bei Navigon passiert momentan einiges: Über Nacht wurde das Update 1.5.1 veröffentlicht, welches das lästige Problem der teilweise fehlerhaften Sprachausgabe behebt. Doch leider können nicht alle Nutzer jenes Update erhalten, da die D-A-CH-Version durch Apple zunächst aus dem Store gelöscht wurde. Apple hat in der Nacht ein EFI Update für den 27"-iMac mit Intel Core i5- oder Core i7-Prozessor veröffentlicht, welches zwei wichtige Probleme beheben soll. Weiteres Update für den 27" iMac: SMC Firmware Update 1.0
Neben den EFI-Update für den 27" iMac hat Apple ein weiteres Update für das Gerät veröffentlicht. Das 27"iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0 soll eine Inkompatibilität im Target Display Modus beheben. Der Target Display Modus erlaubt es, den iMac auch als normalen Bildschirm für einen anderen Rechner nutzen zu können, ähnlich wie der Target Disk Modus es erlaubt, die Festplatte eines Rechners über Firewire auf einem anderen Rechner zu nutzen.

Neben dem Sicherheitsupdate wurden noch zwei weitere Updates speziell für den iMac in der 27-Zoll Variante veröffentlicht. Mit dem SMC Firmware-Update behebt Apple einen Fehler, der im sogenannten "Target Display-Modus" auftreten kann. Das EFI-Update sorgt dafür, dass es nicht mehr zu erhöhter Rechenlast bei der Nutzung der Audiowiedergabe über Kopfhörer kommen kann. Zusätzlich wird ein Fehler der Bildschirmhintergrundbeleuchtung behoben, die beim Einschalten des Macs hin und wieder nicht ansprang. Das EFI Update für den iMac kann nur von Core-iX-Modellen empfangen werden. Alle Aktualisierungen sind je nach Notwendigkeit über die Softwareaktualisierung erhältlich.

Droid Incredible specs confirmed on Verizon site
Yes, good people of Engadgetland, we finally have an official spec sheet for the eagerly awaited Incredible handset. A 3.7-inch OLED touchscreen leads the way, with an 800 x 480 resolution, which will offer the full Google Experience on Android version 2.1. That sounds remarkably like a refashioned Nexus One to us, even down to the 1GHz Snapdragon chip inside, but where the Droid Incredible differs is in its inclusion of Sense UI (á la the Desire) and an 8 megapixel autofocising camera. Sony UK's 3DTV launch includes a few free games to get early adopters started
As the GMT turns, Sony's divisions are revealing their 3D plans for the rest of the year and the latest is its UK branch. The HX803 3D-ready model is first out the door in June, with LX903 and HX903 models arriving shortly afterward packing specs identical to their US cousins, with the addition of Freeview HD tuners and PAL-friendly refresh rates. Since the HX803 doesn't come with any of those 100-hour battery rated glasses , viewers getting ready for the 2010 World Cup will likely opt for one of the 3D accessor

Retro handset for the iPad is fashion-forward, techno-backward
Filed under: iPadHere's something very high on the cool scale. The retro-cool Moshi Moshi 01 handset (MM01) can be used with mobile phones, VoIP via USB and yes, iPhones and iPads.
Old-timers like me remember back when talking on the phone meant standing next to the wall, tethered (physically, not Bluetooth) to a hunk of plastic and metal, speaking into a bulky handset that hung from a 2- or 3-foot length of cord. The folks at Native Union have brought the sexy back with the MM01. When fitted with the proper adapter, the MM01 can connect to most mobile phones including the iPhone.

Video shows iPhone 3G running v4.0 multitasking
A YouTube video appears to show a jailbroken iPhone 3G running the v4.0 firmware, with the full set of features including multitasking. Apple officially restricts multitasking functionality to the latest-generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS, which has lead to criticism from owners of earlier devices with slower processors and limited RAM.

Intel: Light Peak may replace USB 3.0, due 2011
Intel's upcoming Light Peak standard could take over from USB 3.0, company senior fellow Kevin Kahn said today at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing. The 10Gbps peripheral standard was technically built to link up other standards but was seen by Kahn as possibly replacing 5Gbps USB 3.0 altogether in the next few years. He went so far as to treat Light Peak as a finality that may replace any other standard in the future.

Hands on with OmniGraffle for iPad
Filed under: iPadLong a Mac desktop staple, OmniGraffle for OS X offers an interactive editor for laying out charts and diagrams. It's a useful tool for planners, managers, and designers. I have not been a serious user of the product, nor do I own the latest OS X version, but I have used the software enough to recognize that it has made its own niche in the Mac ecosystem. The desktop versions I've used have been solid, robust and, most importantly, they've gotten the job done when the job is to lay out and edit organizational wiring diagrams.

GPNC Korea announces the first me-too Android HDTV
Anyone opposed to another Android packing TV announced by a foreign manufacturer of questionable validity? We figured you weren't, so say hello to GPNC Korea's television running Android 1.5 on a 833 Mhz ARM Cortex 8A chip. Apple shipments up 34% for the quarter
Apple has continued to show strong sales, with computer shipments up 34 percent for the first quarter of the year, according to report from Gartner Research. The company gained market share to reach 8 percent in the US, as the current leaders HP and Dell showed only modest increases in unit distribution and market share declines down to 25 percent and 23.4 percent, respectively.

Optoma begins shipping GameTime projectors
Optoma today began shipping its GameTime projectors aimed at computer and console gamers. The DLP-based lineup includes the GT720, GT360 and the newly announced GT700. The former two use short throw lenses and have a 2,500-lumen brightness rating and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Both also have a 10W speaker built-in.

IDC: Apple slips to 6.4% market share in early 2010
Apple has slid back substantially in US market share in the first three months of 2010, IDC said in a study. An early estimate says Apple's share shrunk from 7.4 percent this fall to 6.4 percent in the winter with about 1.13 million. The number was also a drop from 7 percent a year ago.
