Police investigating lost iPhone prototype raid Gizmodo editor's home
The backstory of the lost fourth-gen iPhone prototype acquired by Gizmodo last week is certainly already the stuff of some legend, but hold on tight, because it just got even wilder: Giz editor Jason Chen's house was apparently raided by California's REACT computer crimes task force under the authority of a search warrant on Friday night and his computers and several other items were seized. That means a criminal investigation led by the San Mateo police and district attorney is almost certainly in full swing, which is, well, crazy. As you know, we published images of the iPhone prototype last Saturday, so we're tracking this story as closely as we know all of you are. For now hang tight and we'll share more info as we get it.

Briefly: The Tube updates to 2.9.6; iPad purchase ban
A new version of The Tube, an app for watching TV on a Mac, has been released by equinux. The v2.9.6 update adds support for multiple new TV receivers, including Hauppauge's Nova-S, Mini Stick and areo TV. Also new is a guide for US channels from Tribune Media Services, and a plug-in that allows managing channel lists through a web interface. Other new features include keyboard shortcuts for flipping through channels, integrated channel search and small bugfixes. Police seize Gizmodo writer's computers in iPhone case
The first signs of police action in the stolen iPhone prototype investigation surfaced late last evening as California's Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team seized Gizmodo writer Jason Chen's computers. The move was allowed a search warrant granted by a San Mateo Superior Court judge and gives the police permission to search for evidence of who sold the iPhone. It will also include call records, searches for the Apple engineer who used the device, and most any other form of evidence that might link the news site to the prototype.

Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter not accomplishing the simplest of tasks
Look, there's no arguing that Apple charges a boatload for its first-party adapters, and this isn't the first time that one of those overpriced dongles has caused an uproar (Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter, anyone?). But when the company trots out an iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter and promises to enable users to "see their videos and slideshows on the big screen," it should probably make a few clarifications. iPhone: Aus T-Mobile wird Telekom
T-Mobile gibt's nicht mehr. Die Telekom baut zur Zeit intern einiges um, unter anderem gibt es die Marke T-Mobile zukünftig nicht mehr, die Handysparte des Konzerns tritt künftig unter Telekom Mobilfunk auf. In dem Zusammenhang wird nach und nach auch die Netzkennung T-Mobile im Display der Mobiltelefone verschwinden und durch Telekom.de oder Telekom ersetzt.
iPhone-Besitzer werden eigentlich per SMS auf die Umstellung hingewiesen, allerdings erhalten wir derzeit regelmäßig E-Mails von iPhone-Besitzern, die sich über die neue Kennung wundern und offensichtlich keine Kurznachricht diesbezüglich erhalten haben. Keine Panik also: Das Netz bleibt das gleiche, nur der Name ist neu.

Developer submits Wi-Fi sync app for iPhone
A new app, just submitted to the App Store, promises the ability to wirelessly sync an iPhone or iPod touch with a local computer, instead of connecting via a dock and/or a USB cable. Simply called Wi-Fi Sync, the app must initially pair with matching desktop software, which in turn communicates with iTunes. Once the pairing is complete, users can simply load Wi-Fi Sync any time they want to update a handheld's content.

I'm a big fan of Dilbert comics and read them on a daily basis. Thanks to John Gruber for pointing out this excellent work that only appeared on the official Dilbert blog. iPhone App Store outselling BlackBerry by at least 10 to 1
BlackBerry App World has under a tenth the popularity of the iPhone's app store, RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis inadvertently confirmed as part of his analyst discussion today. With 20 million total users, App World sees just one million downloads per day versus 10 to 20 million at the Apple portal. The estimate came after SAI noted that Apple's download count jumped by a billion between January and mid-April.

Estimates: Nook demand beats Kindle, iPad outsells both
Filed under: iPadAccording to DigiTimes, the demand for Nooks exceeded that of the Kindle in March. Meanwhile, the iPad has probably outsold them both.
Mingchi Kuo, a senior analyst at Digitimes, noted that e-book reader manufacturers shipped more units of the Nook to Barnes & Noble than Kindles to Amazon last month. Kuo suggested that the Nook accounted for 53% of e-book readers shipped to US vendors in March, 2010.
Of course, the number of units shipped doesn't necessarily represent the number of units sold. Barnes & Noble sells Nooks at their retail stores and some university bookstores, so those stocks must be maintained. Amazon has only sold Kindles online until last weekend

Nokia N8's full spec sheet leaks, nothing shocking spied within
Just one day after finding a pretty thorough review of the Nokia N8 on a Russian website, the full spec sheet seems to be floating about as well -- also from a Russian source. Good news, mobile gamers -- NVIDIA's looking out for you and yours, and if you're tired of lobbying to Congress about the inequities between driver releases for desktop GPUs and driver releases for mobile GPUs, you can finally move on to some other just cause. NVIDIA's Verde driver program has been a relative success over the years, but it's about to become a lot more gnarly when the company outs its 256 Series drivers in a few months. Police in iPhone case could charge both thief and buyers
The ongoing investigation into the stolen next-generation iPhone prototype could involve both the alleged thief and the buyers, tips from insiders noted on Monday afternoon. Those aware of the investigation said that the original finder was the most likely to face criminal charges but that the buyer could implicated as well. The NYT sources added that the $5,000 price paid means any charges could be considered felonies rather than misdemeanors.

FCC launches Spectrum Task Force, unused frequencies become wanted criminals
It's no secret that Julius Genachowski and his posse up in Washington are taking spectrum reallocation very, very seriously in an effort to nip any danger of a wireless broadband crunch in the bud, and the FCC's taken another small step in that process today with the creation of the "Spectrum Task Force." It sounds like the Task Force's main job is to get the entire agency on the same page with regards to its long-term spectrum planning, ultimately playing "a critical role in the execution of the spectrum recommendations in the National Broadband Plan." Developer RE:Vision is now selling four new FxPlug plugins, all designed for Apple's Final Cut Studio. Adapted from their After Effects versions are FieldsKit 3.0 and ReelSmart Motion Blur 4.0. The former uses field reconstruction and adaptive motion to build full frames, while ReelSmart is intended to generate or remove motion blur. The pair are said to be faster in Final Cut form, and support Final Cut Pro 6.0.3, Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and (in the case of ReelSmart) Motion 4.0.2.

PC Malware targeting iTunes, iPad users
Filed under: iTunesHere's a cute trick. Some PC owners are getting emails alerting them to a new version of iTunes that has been updated "for best iPad performance, newer features and security."
The email provides a link, asking recipients to download a "new" version of iTunes. You see where this is going, of course. Those who follow through actually download a counterfeit version of iTunes which contains malicious code that opens up a backdoor allowing unauthorized access to a PC.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 video hands-on
We'll be very honest with you: unless you're a Tour user amped to upgrade to something that directly addresses your specific complaints, this video might be of little interest. Android, iPhone app stores to support PayPal
PayPal in a recent presentation said it would offer its system to pay for in-app purchases on both Android and the iPhone. The company's Benelux regional manager, Dennis van Allermeersch, said PayPal had developed a method that would let users sign into the service and pay without having to use an existing system like Google Checkout or, purportedly, an iTunes account. BlackBerry 6 coming in third quarter of this year
RIM's co-CEO Mike Lazaridis just announced in an analyst call today that the company's next platform -- coined BlackBerry 6 -- will be available "in the next calendar quarter," which we take to mean the third quarter of 2010. Apple IIe hacked into Twitter station, still looks better than most digiframes
This project has all the hallmarks of a classic hack: obsolete hardware, a somewhat frivolous function, and thrilling 8-bit graphics. As you can imagine, getting to the point where this Apple IIe could display Tweets was no mean feat! Custom 6502 assembler code on the PC sends Twitter updates (and user avatars dumbed down to 8-bit) over a custom USB-to-joystick port interface on the Apple. Sony's EVIL cameras photographed, named
One of Sony's mirrorless digital cameras has been spotted in an Asian pub. The camera is now known to be called the NEX3, as a tiny photo reveals. The 14-megapixel camera will share its ExmorHD sensor with another in the series, dubbed the NEX5. Rumor: Intel to launch Atom N500 series in June, ASUS netbooks to follow
Details on this one are pretty light at the moment, but DigiTimes is reporting that Intel will be launching its Atom N500 series of dual-core processors this June. That word comes from the site's "sources from notebook players," who also say that Intel will be revealing more details on its third generation netbook platform at the same time. Unfortunately, that's about as specific as they're getting right now, but there are naturally some netbooks rumored to be launching alongside the new processors as well, with ASUS apparently already planning at least one N500-based netbook for the third quarter of this year that will sell for around $575. Tracking suggests iPad sales now likely over 1 million
Over 1 million iPads have already been sold, claims online advertiser Chitika. The firm cites tracking figures, which include the number of unique devices that have made contact. Distribution is said to be highest in Apple's home state of California, which represents 19.12 percent of all iPads. Share falls off rapidly elsewhere, with New York claiming the second-highest ownership at 8.3 percent. At the bottom of the top 10 states is Massachusetts with 3.05 percent.

But the official Deadliest Catch game for the iPhone actually impressed me. As just a game on its own, it lacks -- it's really just a series of minigames designed to simulate crabbing, which itself isn't that fun to begin with. Samsung 'punishing' KT for carrying iPhone
Samsung has been retaliating against Korean cell carrier KT for its success with the iPhone, the provider's chairman Lee Suk-chae said today. Samsung today refreshed its STORY Station external hard drives to add a full USB 3.0 interface. The 3.5-inch external hard drive will bring peak transfer speeds of about 5Gbps, or about 10 times faster than the common USB 2.0 standard. Motorola gives Google the boot, turns to Skyhook for location services
Well, this is something. Out of seemingly nowhere, Motorola has just made the decision to shun Google's location services in favor of those from Skyhook, proudly becoming the "first Android device maker to abandon Google for its location services." According to the release -- which feels atypically jovial to us -- the device maker will marry Skyhook's GPS, WiFi and cellular location in the "vast majority" of its phone models, and since Skyhook will be baked into the OS, every single app can reap the benefits. It was inevitable, really. Samsung's not-so-storied Story hard drive first took the leap to eSATA in November of last year, and for those always in need of the latest and / or greatest, now this very drive has made the logical leap to SuperSpeed. Sony finally ending production of floppy disks
Sony this weekend said it would finally put an end to floppy disk production in its home country, marking the effective end to the format's 41-year run. Having already stopped selling floppies in most areas as of March this year, it now expects to stop sales of 3.5-inch disks in Japan as of March 2011. Developing markets like India continue to sell the disks today, but their fate isn't known.

Taiwan may share same 4G bands as US
The Taiwanese government will assign the same 700MHz frequency band for the LTE 4G wireless as its American counterparts, according to sources in the industry, a report claimed on Monday. The island's National Communications Commission has reportedly blocked off frequencies between 698MHz and 806MHz for the advanced cellular access. Wozniak iPad demo results in firing of Apple engineer
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has admitted partial responsibility for a company engineer being fired sometime after April 3rd, the day of the iPad launch. Just after midnight on the 3rd, Wozniak says he was joined in a lineup by the engineer, "A.J.," who showed him a 3G iPad. A.J. claimed e-mail permission to use the tablet outside of secure areas beginning at midnight, and Wozniak says he took advantage of this to try the iPad version of Numbers for a few minutes.

Nook may have outsold Kindle; both outsold by iPad
More of Barnes & Noble's Nook may have been sold in March than the Amazon Kindle, analysts said today. Checking with suppliers, Digitimes Research found that 53 percent of conventional e-readers shipped to the US last month were Nooks, leaving Amazon with only a minority stake. The exact numbers weren't given, but the larger market reached 1.43 million devices in the entire winter quarter.

If you had any illusions about what exactly the Bold 9650 is, make no mistake: owning a Tour takes you 95 percent of the way to understanding the experience. The only thing you'll really notice on an ongoing basis is the optical pad, which is definitely a big improvement over the trackball of old -- not only does it eliminate the issue of gunk buildup, but it's totally responsive and arguably even easier to use than the ball for most tasks. iZone: IFA kündigt separate Apple-Halle an
Auf der jährlich in Berlin stattfindenden Consumer Electronics-Messe IFA feiern in diesem Jahr die beiden neuen Ausstellungsbereiche iZone und eLibrary Premiere. Mit der iZone will man der "boomenden Produktwelt rund um Mac & Co" gerecht werden und attraktiver Anlaufpunkt für Publikum und Fachbesucher rund um die verwandte Hard- und Software sein. Zumindest für die iZone als Apple-fokussierter Ausstellungsbereich ist ein guter Start zu erwarten. BlackBerry Pearl 3G first hands-on!
We just wrapped up a quick play with RIM's just-announced BlackBerry Pearl 3G, and our initial impression is a positive one -- if you've currently got a Pearl 8100 series (or even an 8200 series flip, for that matter), this looks like a must-have upgrade. The phone's UI is lightning fast, the optical pad is plenty responsive (as RIM's optical pads tend to be), and 802.11n and HSDPA are obviously both welcome additions. The keyboards are a little funny, but that's nothing new -- Pearls have always had polarizing keyboards, dating back to the early days -- but we think we prefer the 14-key just a smidge over the traditional 20-key. RIM makes BlackBerry Pearl 3G, Bold 9650 official
RIM kicked off the start of its Wireless Enterprise Symposium today by launching two particularly important BlackBerries. The Pearl 3G finally replaces the long-serving 8100 series and adds heavily requested 3G for GSM carriers as well as the trackpad seen on newer phones like the Bold 9700. So schön sind Oldschool und Web 2.0 selten zusammengekommen. Ein alter Apple 2 (IIe) ist in der Lage Tweets zu screenen, so wie den Avatar in ein Pixelbild zu übertragen. Dazu haben diese Modder eine bootbare 5.25-Zoll-Twitterdiskette geschrieben, was zu ganz wunderbaren Ergebnissen führt. Weil egal, wie toll diese Computer sein mögen, nutzen tut sie keiner mehr. Last April the Wall Street Journal freaked out a bit when they went through Apple's SEC reports and saw that Apple only reimbursed Steve Jobs for US$4000 in flight expenses for his private Gulfstream V jet from July to December 2008.The $4000 reimbursement was a paltry sum compared to the $580,000 Steve was reimbursed for travel on his jet during the January to June 2008 period.
The $4000 reimbursement was due to several reasons, notably Jobs being sick, but also because he didn't need to fly all over the world closing iPhone 3

Sony shutting down Japanese floppy disk sales by March 2011, kills a tech dinosaur
Believe it or not, Sony managed to shift 12 million 3.5-inch floppy disks in Japan last year -- presumably to die-hard old schoolers. Alas, time waits for no one, and the venerable data transporter that started its life way back in 1981 is going to all but cease production by March of next year. Sony was the last of the major manufacturers to keep churning these bits of plastic out, but soon that too shall be no more. Having already shut down operations in most of the world, it's now noted the end of life for its domestic market, and thereby effectively consigned the floppy to the past. WiFi Sync: kabellos iPhone mit iTunes synchronisieren

Wifi-Sync nennt sich die App, die der Entwickler Greg Hughes geschrieben hat und etwas sehr einfaches und dennoch praktisches ermöglicht. Das iPhone kann sich nun per WiFi mit dem Rechner-basierten iTunes synchronisieren. Keine Kabel oder anderer Schnickschnack. Laut Hughes wurde die App an Apple geschickt, um sich die von den Zensoren aus Cupertino absegnen zu lassen. Vodafone UK's Nexus One due Apr 30, offered for free
Vodafone's UK division today began taking pre-orders for the Nexus One. The Android phone is now slated to ship April 30th and, notably, will be available for free: those who need a £35 ($54) or higher monthly plan can skip paying for the phone itself. A £25 ($39) plan is also available on a two-year contract, but the price of the Nexus One hasn't been mentioned.

Google updates Nexus One page, tells Verizon customers to get a Droid Incredible instead
Now this, this is all kinds of silly. Google has been busy updating its phone sales site, and the latest word for Verizon Wireless subscribers encourages them to look at the "similarly feature-packed" cousin of the Nexus One, the Incredible. Importantly, what's missing from the new wording is the "coming soon" tag, suggesting that for all intents and purposes the Nexus has been obviated by the arrival of the Incredible. Nook outsells Kindle in March?
Given DigiTimes' spotty record when it comes to pushing rumors you might be inclined to read "Digitimes Research" as a kind of oxymoron. Unfortunately, as long as Amazon refuses to publish specifics with regard to units sold, these analyst estimates are as good as it gets. So langsam wird man sich von diesem Format verabschieden müssen: der Diskette/Floppy Disk. Aufgrund sinkender Nachfrage, wen wundert's, kündigte Sony in Japan an, dass die Produktion 2011 eingestellt würde. Im japanischen Markt hat Sony noch immer 70% Marktanteil und ist einer der letzten Firmen überhaupt, die noch daran festhielten. Damit dürfte dennoch das Ende der Diskette besiegelt sein. Wir fangen mal bei den positiven Eigentschaften an. Ouidoo (hi!) von QderoPateo kommt mit 512MB Ram, 4GB ROM und 28GB Flash-Speicher, erweiterbar per microUSB auf bis zu 32GB, einer 5-Megapixel-Kamera, Bluetooth und WiFi. Der eigentliche Killer allerdings ist der Prozessor. Der hat angeblich 26 Kerne und schafft 8 Gigaflop. Die Standby-Zeit soll bei 220 Stunden liegen. Ist ja nicht schlecht. Camera Connection Kit für iPad ermöglicht Anschluss weiterer USB-Geräte
Das Camera Connection für iPad erlaubt dem Nutzer über zwei Adapter wahlweise den direkten Anschluss einer SD-Karte oder den Anschluss einer Kamera via USB, um diverse Bilddateien inklusive RAW-Fotos direkt zu importieren. TidBits hat bei einem ersten Test jedoch auch festgestellt, dass der USB-Anschluss zu weit mehr taugt: So konnten die Kollegen ein USB-Headset nutzen, auch eine USB-Tastatur ließ sich anschließen. Es handelt sich jedoch trotzdem nicht um einen ungezügelten Anschluss, da die Kommunikation über eine Einbahnstraße läuft - mit einer Festplatte wollte sich das iPad nicht zufrieden geben.

Uns unser Leser André hat auf der Schweizer Webseite des Mobilfunkanbieters Orange einen Datentarif für das iPad entdeckt: «Internet everywhere for iPad».
Der Plan hat keine monatliche Grundgebühr und erlaubt unbegrenztes Datenvolumen, faktisch ist dieses aber auf 5 GB pro Monat limitiert. Die Kosten belaufen sich pro Tag an dem der Plan genutzt wird auf CHF 5.–. Drei kostenlose Tage sind beim Abschluss des Tarifs inklusive. Die zugehörige Micro-Sim kostet einmalig CHF 10.–.

Droid Incredible comes with 'limited introductory offer' of 2GB microSD
All in all, we thought the Droid Incredible was a pretty nifty phone, but in our full review we still called out a couple ways Verizon and HTC could make it a little more well, you know. It seems Verizon has taken one of our suggestions to heart, because we've just learned the company will ship new phones with a 2GB microSD card. No word on how long the promo offer will last or whether existing pre-orders are included, but we hear at least one early adopter got left out. We'll have to see if more speak up.

Nokia N8 already reviewed, panned as poor iPhone rival
The Nokia N8 has already been given an early review that calls it a poor rival to Android and the iPhone. Symbian^3 is said to have "little change in functionality," and the phone itself as seen as offering little new that Nokia or other companies haven't done before. Mobile-Review's Eldar Murtazin goes so far as to jokingly accuse Nokia employees of sabotaging the company's brand from the inside, else it might be "impossible to explain" why the N8 exists at all.

Palm Pixi: zero dollars with two-year contract on Sprint
This doesn't really come as a surprise, but it's welcome news regardless. Sprint is now offering the Palm Pixi free with a two-year contract on its website. The deal isn't to be had in retail stores quite yet, but we assume that's also in the cards as well. The Pixi -- which has a slower processor than the Pre and lacks WiFi -- is a handset we always thought was destined for the zero dollars on contract scheme, so like we said, we're not surprised. Regardless, if you've been wanting a Pixi but couldn't stand the idea of laying out any cash for it, well, now's your chance.
