Report: Apple developing exclusive iTunes purchase tracking for iAds

TechCrunch has the word that Apple may be implementing a "VIP" ad program within its upcoming iAd service. An email reportedly sent from a Quattro sales representative mentions a "Verification of iTunes Purchase" program, in which an advertiser for a certain app would be able to see his or her users' iTunes purchases, and deliver ads based on that information. Quattro is the mobile ad company purchased by Apple a while back, and presumably the division overseeing iAds.
That verification process would allow app creators to not only know which of their customers has already

ExoPC Windows 7-based slate not coming until September, will play 1080p vids
There's still no official word on whether HP's Slate has been canned, but the more we hear about ExoPC's slate, the more we think it could be a pretty stellar Win 7 tablet option. The company's founder just told us that the tablet is slated (pun intended, good sirs) for a September 7 launch date in the US, Canada and France, and that the 32GB version will retail for $599. Road to Office 2011: New looks, support for Exchange, VBA
Microsoft's forthcoming Office for Mac 2011 promises greater feature parity with its Windows version, including improved support for Exchange and reincorporated support for Visual Basic for Applications, a feature that was dropped in Office 2008. It also shares more in common with the the look of Office 2010 for Windows, which is also currently in beta.

iPad 3G sees sellouts across US Apple Stores
The iPad 3G has temporarily sold out at a number of Apple Stores across the US, a report indicates. A full 10 out of 10 outlets contacted by AppleInsider are confirmed to have no models in stock, in any capacity. A few of the stores also claim to be out of Wi-Fi-only models, suggesting that supply problems have persisted for more than a month.

Nokia board backs CEO, new device strategy
Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila said the company's management is fully supported by the board in focusing on offering services and slowly shying away from hardware, according to a Thursday report. Nokia has began offering Internet services that include music downloads, e-mail and maps. A chief executive at the company admits there is plenty of work left to do, but a solid foundation has been laid down.

Northeastern University students build web-syncing, home-automating DPAC alarm clock
It may not actually be available for sale, but it looks like some students from Northeastern University are giving devices like the Chumby and Sony Dash a run for their money. They've built this so-called Dynamically Programmable Alarm Clock, or DPAC, which can sync up with your Google Calendar to automatically set alarms, get traffic, weather and other information, and even integrate with a home automation system to turn on the lights, open the blinds, and start your coffee maker as part of a wake-up cycle. Yahoo has posted a variety of iPad user statistics, representing data gleaned from tablet usage on the company's search network. Initial usage was dominated by men in the 35-44 age group, fitting the standard profile for early adopters. GoodSync arrives for Mac; syncs, backs up files, volumes
Siber Systems has released a Mac version of its backup and sync utility, GoodSync 1.1.7. The app copies photos, music, videos or entire hard disks over USB, networks and the web. iPad could produce the quickest climb to the $1B mark
Filed under: iPadYesterday, we reported on an incredible statistic: If iPad sales continue at the current rate through the end of June, Apple could realize US$1 billion in revenue. Today, Yankee Group's Carl Howe puts that number into perspective, noting that the iPad "will likely take the crown for the fastest consumer product growth to the $1 billion revenue mark in history." Neuer Build von Mac OS X 10.6.4 an die Entwickler verteilt
Apple hat, nach Angaben von worldofapple, eine neue Version des kommenden Mac OS X 10.6.4 Updates an die angemeldeten Mac-Entwickler ausgeliefert. Mit dem neuen Build werden unter anderem Probleme beim verbinden mit einer Apple remote Fernbedienung, Probleme mit über SMB verbunden Laufwerken und Probleme mit Cisco VPN Verbindungen behoben.
Bei Apple angemeldete Mac-Entwickler können sich das 573.1MB Update mit der Buildnummer 10F46 ab jetzt herunterladen.

vjoon K4 6.2 adds support for Creative Suite 5
Managing Editor says it has released a v6.2 update for the vjoon K4 Cross-Media Publishing Platform. The software is aimed at larger publishers of content like books, magazines and websites, and allows workers to submit and collaborate on content in a coordinated way. AT&T may have had iPhone exclusive extended for iPad deal
AT&T may have used the launch of the iPad to buy a last-minute extension of its iPhone exclusivity deal, BroadPoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall claimed late Wednesday. He believed that AT&T cut its deal for $30 unlimited, contract-free iPad data in exchange for extending its sole rights to the iPhone in the US until 2011. The evidence was the purported rejection of a Verizon iPad deal that Marshall's sources had said was virtually certain.

Targus recalls half a million laptop power adapters due to burn hazard
Have a Targus laptop power adapter? Then you'll likely want to take notice, as the company has just issued a recall of more than half a million of its adapters, which are actually made by Comarco Inc. The recall specifically affects the company's universal laptop power adapters with interchangeable tips, which can apparently overheat and pose a burn hazard to anyone that tries to unplug it -- there's been 518 reports of connector tips overheating so far, and eight incidents of consumers being burned. Opera: Flash makes little sense for video
Opera involved itself in the debate over Flash today by criticizing Adobe for its long-term stance. Product analyst Phillip Grønvold said that browsers like Opera Mini still need to support Flash but that this will likely have to change. Visa slips plans for wireless payments via iPhone cases
Visa will soon allow iPhone owners to make wireless credit card payments at special terminals, a quickly-pulled press release suggests. The concept involves customized payment software called Visa payWave, which will come pre-installed on a memory card. FCC argues a "third way" for net neutrality
The FCC today proposed a unique reclassification of Internet access that would step up some of the net neutrality requirements for ISPs in the US. HDMI-Audio beim iMac und MacBook Pro
Eine interessante Information für Besitzer eines aktuellen MacBook Pro (Mitte 2010) oder iMac (Ende 2009): Diese Geräte können über den Mini-DisplayPort auch Audio ausgeben. Mit einem passenden Adapter lassen sich so beispielsweise TV-Geräte über HDMI anschließen und werden vom Mac als Lautsprecher erkannt. Allerdings wird diese Funktion nicht von allen Mini-DisplayPort-auf-HDMI-Adaptern unterstützt, Apple hat diesbezüglich bereits einen Support-Artikel veröffentlicht.

Did AT&T provide cheap iPad data rates to keep iPhone exclusivity?

iPhone am Herzschlag der Zeit: Neues Patent liest im Kaffeesatz

Wer seine Gadgetlust nicht so ganz in den Griff bekommt, oder sonstwie daran glaubt, dass man aus dem Herzschlag alles ablesen kann, der wird sich über das neue Apple Patent freuen. Das nämlich will einen Herz-Monitor direkt ins Gehäuse integrieren um so schon beim Anfassen des geliebten Handys messen zu können wie es einem geht. Wir haben jetzt schon Angst vor den Milliarden Apps die einem damit in der Seele lesen wollen, aber vielleicht bleiben wir ja auch davon verschont, denn ein Patent ist eben noch längst kein Produkt. Opera wades into Flash debate, says it 'makes very little sense' for video
Opera Software already caused quite a stir with the release of the iPhone version of its browser, and it looks like it's now starting to make itself heard in one of the biggest browser-related debates going. Speaking with Tech Radar, Opera's product analyst Phillip Grønvold started out with something of a diplomatic approach by saying that "today's internet content is dependent on Flash" and "if you remove Flash you do not have today's internet," and for that reason Opera needs to support Flash. Nach sechs Jahren Wachstum: Nintendo meldet weniger Gewinn
Nach sechs Jahren Wachstum hat Nintendo für das vergangene Geschäftsjahr einen Rückgang des Gewinns gemeldet. Mit 228,6 Milliarden Yen (1,929 Milliarden Euro) fiel der Überschuss um 18 Prozent geringer aus als im Vorjahr. Intel may not ship 6-core Xeons in earnest until June
Intel has reportedly told resellers not to expect its 6-core Xeon 5600 chips in significant quantities until the end of the spring, in June. Warner CEO teases Apple music streaming plans
The CEO of Warner Music, Edgar Bronfman Jr., has refused to confirm or deny Apple interests in a streaming music service. Speaking during a Wednesday financial call, the executive dodged any direct answers about Apple plans. "Apple is not currently a retailer involved in an access or subscription model," he commented. "I'd probably like not to speculate on what Appleís plans are -- it's really interesting technology that it acquired in the Lala acquisition. That's a question that Apple management should answer."

Google Goggles starts to get useful, adds text translation
In our experience, about the only thing Google Goggles is good for is telling you that your can of Coke looks like someone's face, but the company's just-released version 1.1 sounds like it might be on a whole new level of awesomeness. Basically, Goggles can now recognize text within the "region of interest" that you specify on the screen then give you the option to translate it to any language of your choosing. VG Wort, VG Bild-Kunst und die Zentralstelle für private Überspielungsrechte (ZPÜ) haben im Bundesanzeiger einen Tarif für die Urheberrechtsabgabe auf PCs veröffentlicht, wie der Bitkom mitteilt. Sie fordern für jeden Rechner mit integriertem Brenner 17,06 Euro. Für Geräte ohne Brenner sollen 15,19 Euro und für zum Einbau bestimmte, einzelne Brenner 1,88 Euro anfallen. eBoy's FixPix iPhone game is basically the greatest thing ever made
Okay, so this isn't out yet, but it's hard to deny that the eBoy-designed Delicious Toys-developed game FixPix is probably the best idea anyone has ever had since the wheel or sliced bread. ARM blames Adobe Flash for smartbook delays
Adobe's repeated delays for Flash are a large part of why smartbooks haven't launched yet, ARM marketing VP Ian Drew said this week. Optimizations needed to make the plugin work have prevented the Lenovo Skylight and similar ARM-based mini notebooks from meeting their original spring targets. Future iPhones could identify users by heartbeat
A newly-published Apple patent application proposes identifying iPhone users by their heartbeat, rather than by more conventional means like a passcode. The filing, Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor, describes a system of leads that could be built into an iPhone, and register EKG data collected from a person's hand. Archos 7 Home Tablet ships to Android lovers in June
So you go and pre-order the Archos 7 Home Tablet, thinking it would ship by the end of April. Our deepest apologizes, but according to the official press release below, the 7-inch, Android 1.2 tablet won't be shipping in the US until early June -- though an Archos spokesperson told us that those who pre-ordered may get units before the end of May if they count their lucky stars. Buying an iPad, one month later
Filed under: iPadOn Tuesday, I finally joined the ranks of iPad owners. It was a relatively smooth experience, but there are some things that caught my eye:
If you want certain models, you're going to have to wait. The Apple Store at Chandler Fashion Center only had the 64GB Wi-Fi model while the Biltmore Apple Store had 16GB and 64GB Wi-Fi models. Since I only wanted the 16GB model, I walked away a happy customer. But, if you want a 32GB Wi-Fi or any of the 3G models, you're pretty much out of luck.

Scribd abandons Flash documents for HTML5
Online document sharing site Scribd is today starting a transition of from Flash to HTML5, according to the company's CTO, Jared Friedman. At present, most PDF, Word and PowerPoint files uploaded to the site are still viewed in Flash containers, which help to preserve formatting while adding controls for flipping pages or zooming in and out. Converted documents should also preserve their formatting, but are read as one long webpage, with a new bookmarking feature for preserving places.

Nintendo sees DS and Wii sales drop, but no iPad effect
Nintendo on Thursday reported a rare downturn in the number of consoles it sold over its just-ended fiscal year. The company sold 13 percent fewer DS handhelds, falling to 27.1 million, and saw the Wii drop even faster by 20.8 percent to 20.5 million consoles. Its profit also dropped for the first time since 2004, sinking 36 percent to just over $3.8 billion.

Patent: iPhone misst Herzfrequenz
In einem aktuell veröffentlichten Patentantrag beschreibt Apple die Möglichkeit, über ins Gehäuse eines iPhone oder iPod integrierte Sensoren die Herzfrequenz zu messen oder gar die Person, die das Gerät in der Hand hält zu identifizieren. Momentan noch Zukunftsmusik, sollte eine solche Technik allerdings irgendwann zu Anwendung kommen, ließen sich damit beispielsweise Zugangssperren verknüpfen oder interessante Zusatzfunktionen in Fitness- und Medizin-Apps integrieren. Lower Merion, PA school district denouement: cleared of spying charges
The long, intense saga over in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania -- in which lawsuits were filed alleging that the school district used students' laptops to spy on them -- may be nearing its end. The class action suit was filed back in February claiming that the school district had made use of "unauthorized, inappropriate and indiscriminate remote activation" of webcams in laptops issued to students," with the school countering that it had some security features that allowed the laptops to be tracked in case of loss or theft, but that those features hadn't been used to track students in any way. Ein neuer PMP von Archos steht kommt im Sommer auf uns zu. Der Hersteller hat den Vision 3 mit einer Kamera aufgebohrt und will dem Marktanteil des iPod nano an den Kragen. Unter 100 Dollar sind für den Vision A30VC angepeilt. Der 3"-Touchscreen macht einen guten Eindruck, und auch wenn die Kamera mit der 640x480er-Auflösung jetzt nicht die besten Bilder aller Zeiten schießt, ist sie der des iPods doch deutlich überlegen, macht sie doch Videos und Fotos. MetroIMD: Rutschige Plastikhülle fürs iPad
MetroIMD nennt sich die rechts abgebildete "Snap-On-Schutzhülle" für das iPad von Macally. Die graue, dezent gemusterte Kunststoffschale lässt sich leicht aufs iPad anclippen und ohne allzu großen Aufwand auch wieder abnehmen. Die Hauptfunktion des MetroIMD dürfte der Schutz der Rückseite vor Kratzern und dergleichen sein. Die Front sowie nahezu der komplette Rand bleiben dagegen frei, ein zuverlässiger Schutz vor Sturzschäden ist somit nicht gegeben. Zudem fällt uns negativ auf, dass das iPad mit aufgesteckter MetroIMD auf einer glatten Oberfläche unangenehm hin- und herrutscht.
Fazit: Wer panische Angst vor Kratzern auf der iPad-Rückseite hat, mag über den Kauf nachdenken, sollte sich aber über den unserer Meinung nach stark begrenzten Nutzen bewusst sein. Analyst: iPad already eating into netbook sales
Apple's iPad is already having a devastating effect on the netbook market, according to new research by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. She notes that year-over-year growth in netbook sales began collapsing dramatically in January, when the iPad was announced, and were almost flat at 5 percent in April, when the iPad shipped. About 44 percent of potential iPad buyers in March were planning to get one instead of a netbook or a full-size notebook, Huberty said.

Samsung ships fast 8Gb flash chip for phones
Samsung this morning launched what's billed as one of the fastest forms of mobile flash memory available. Its new 8-gigabit (1GB) OneNAND chip is based on a 30 nanometer assembly process and a less dense but faster single-level cell technology to provide speeds well above what normal NAND flash memory can achieve at this size. It reads at up to 70MB per second, or more than four times faster than the 17MB per second.

Tarife für Urheberrechtsabgabe bei Computern veröffentlicht
Wie der Branchenverband BITKOM meldet, wurden heute im Bundesanzeiger der Tarif für die Urheberrechtsabgabe bei Computern veröffentlicht. Die Zentralstelle für private Überspielungsrechte (ZPÜ), ein Zusammenschluss mehrerer Verwertungsgesellschaften, fordert für jeden PC mit integriertem Brenner demnach Abgaben in Höhe von 17,06 Euro. Alcatel-Lucent rutscht erneut in die Verlustzone
Alcatel-Lucent hat im ersten Quartal 2010 wieder rote Zahlen geschrieben. Laut der heute veröffentlichten Bilanz verbuchte der französisch-amerikanische Telekomausrüster einen Nettoverlust von 515 Millionen Euro oder 0,23 Euro je Aktie. Im Vorquartal hatte er noch einen Gewinn von 46 Millionen Euro oder 0,02 Euro je Aktie erzielt. Wer das iPad in der Schweiz vertreibt
Wie wir in Erfahrung bringen konnten, wird Apple nur trainiertes Personal am iPad-Verkauf beteiligen. Das heisst alle möglichen iPad-Händler müssen zuerst ein Sales Readiness Kurs direkt bei Apple besucht haben und dort eine abschliessende Prüfung bestehen. Alle potentiellen Händler, die diese Prüfung nicht bestehen, können den iPad nicht vertreiben, egal was für eine Stellung oder welche Position dieser Händler hat.
In der Schweiz wird das iPad natürlich in allen drei Apple Retail Stores (Zürich, Genf und Wallisellen) vertrieben. Weiter werden bei den Händlern nur die Premium-Reseller-Filialen in den Genuss des iPad-Vertriebes kommen können (sofern Kurs/Prüfung bestanden). Auch die von Apple betriebenen Shop-In-Shops (in den Manor-, Media-Markt-, Saturn- etc. Filialen) werden das neue Apple Tablet vertreiben.
Erst vorgestern berichteten wir, dass die Swisscom das iPad nicht anbieten darf — nun dürfte klar sein weshalb.

Ich habe gerade mal zu Testzwecken die relativ neue iPad-Wordpress-App aus dem mobilen US iTunes Store geladen (wozu man allerdings einen US-Apple-Account braucht). Neue Funktionen in iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3
Seit Dienstag ist die dritte Beta des kommenden iPhone OS 4.0 für registrierte iPhone-Entwickler verfügbar. Bereits sind im Internet verschiedene Berichte aufgetaucht, welche die Neuerungen dieser dritten Vorabversion des nächsten iPhone-Betriebssystems aufzeigen.
File sharing
Das File-Sharing-Fenster ist bereits vom iPad her bekannt, bei iTunes mit einem mit iPhone OS 4.0 installierten Apple Mobiltelefon taucht diese Möglichkeit nun ebenfalls auf. Es können so Dateien direkt vom Computer auf das iPhone bzw. vom iPhone auf den Computer gezogen und somit kopiert werden. Aktuell soll die Funktion noch nicht ganz ausgereift sein, aber das ganze OS ist ja aktuell noch Beta.

Google plant zur Jahresmitte den Start eines digitalen Buchladens und wird somit den Verkauf von E-Books nicht allein den Konkurrenten wie Amazon oder Apple überlassen. Dropbox Anywhere provides cloud-capable APIs for developers
Internet storage and file synchronization provider Dropbox has announced a new service, Dropbox Anywhere. The service aims to equip third-party apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry -- arriving later in the Summer -- with the new Dropbox mobile API. The new API will enable developers to create apps that can access the contents of users' Dropbox accounts and keep the data in sync across multiple devices.

AT&T disputes dropped call claim
AT&T tonight as expected has disputed a recent study claiming that it has had worsening dropped call results. The carrier referred to a report from the previously cited third-party firm GWS that argued AT&T was just "two tenths" of a percent away from the top marks in call reliability from an unnamed leader, which is commonly thought to be Verizon. AT&T argued that the results were at a "virtual dead-heat" and that its network was still the fastest.

iPhone OS 4 unlocks 720p video capture, further solidifying iPhone HD?
Last time on let's-speculate-about-Apple-products, the New iPhone rumor mill dug up dirt on video chat and a 5 megapixel camera. Now, it appears there might be one more reason to call it the iPhone HD. MacRumors reports that the iPhone SDK 4 beta includes the value "AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720," leading some to believe Cupertino's next phone will record video in 720p. Apple is quietly marketing a "ViP" program to help sell its iAd platform to App Store developers, according to an e-mail posted on TechCrunch. Laptop Mag's gotten its hands on one of those Dell Mini 10's with T-Mobile's WebConnect we'd heard about a few months back, and they've given it a pretty through once over. So, what's the verdict? After getting a pretty great glimpse of Adobe's Tegra 2- and Android-powered prototype tablet yesterday, we decided to head over to the Web 2.0 Expo show floor ourselves to get some first-hand impressions. ClamCase iPad case magically turns your tablet into a laptop
The second we heard the iPad had Bluetooth keyboard support we knew we'd see a laptop-style case emerge, and here we are, watching a rendered product video for the ClamCase, which triples as case, a stand, and a keyboard. Sure, we have our doubts that the Iron Man 2 footage and AC/DC track being used were properly licensed and the product isn't actually real, but we've got a feeling iPad keyboard cases are going to be the playground for accessory manufacturers -- and the trend is just going to intensify when OS 4.0 brings keyboard support to the iPhone. Teens' texting habits kill Microsoft's Kin before birth
Teens' cellphone habits may have thwarted sales of Microsoft's Kin before they even begin, according to new study. Even though Kin requires a $70 smartphone plan with no built-in text messaging, Pew Research shows that just 27 percent of teens actually go online and 72 percent of them text message their friends. Most of the new phones' e-mail and social networking would actually go unused as just 23 percent visit social networks and 21 percent send e-mail.

Clearwire promises Clear-branded HTC and Samsung WiMAX phones this year
Without going into much detail, Clearwire mentioned on its first quarter earnings call today that WiMAX-capable phones bearing the Clear name from both Samsung and HTC are "expected" to be available before 2010's out, which is a pretty optimistic affirmation of comments the company made earlier this year. FCC to reclassify Internet after all, enforce neutrality
The FCC has quietly made the decision today to reclassify Internet access as a telecommunication service that would be subject to tougher net neutrality rules. Although rumors had spread of the agency backtracking on its promise, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski is now said to be readying a proposal that would put Internet lines under the same Title II "common carriage" rules as phone lines, requiring providers to treat data equally on the network. Not all of the same rules would apply, but which would be exempted weren't known.

AdAge doesn't like iAd's pricing scheme
Filed under: AppleAdvertisingAge confirms today what the Wall Street Journal pointed out last week: advertising with Apple's iAd service won't be cheap. Most advertising agencies charge either a flat rate per thousand impressions (CPM) or a small amount each time a user clicks an ad (CPC). With iAd, Apple will do both.
Under Apple's arrangement, advertisers will pay US$10 per 1,000 impressions, $0.01 for each ad displayed, and $2 for each ad clicked.

QuickScript 3.0 adds writing line to handwriting software
Axiotron has updated its handwriting recognition application, Quickscript 3.0. The software uses a handwriting recognition engine from Vision Objects, and recognizes cursive handwriting, hand printed text and single characters, with support for 26 languages. It supports direct input into applications like Word, Excel, Pages and TextEdit. It uses Kopernikus digital assistant software, which supports AppleScript, allowing users to open applications and perform other tasks by writing short commands on the Quickscript writing pad.
