Apple releases slew of updates, fixes Zero Day bug
Filed under: Software UpdateApple has released a slew of updates in the last few days, including a security update that fixes the Zero Day bugs discovered by Charlie Miller and revealed at CanSecWest. In addition to the MacBook Pro and MobileMe Backup updates, Apple has also released:
27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
This update fixes Target Display Mode compatibility issues on 27-inch iMac computers. Weighs in at 397 KB.

Apple posts new security, iMac firmware updates
Apple has launched a host of additional software updates beyond the MacBook Pro patch distributed earlier today. Central are two firmware updates for the 27-inch iMac: EFI FW Update 1.0 and SMC Firmware Update 1.0. The former deals with high CPU use when playing audio through the headphone jack, as well as instances in which the backlight does not turn on with the computer. The SMC software copes solely with the compatibility of Target Display Mode.

A public beta of FotoMagico 3.2, a tool for creating slideshows with photos and music, has been released by Boinx Software. Review: Incase Combo Charger for iPod, iPhone & iPad

Upgrade service adds twin hard drives to MacBook Pros
OWC and diglloyd have launched a new custom upgrade option for MacBook Pros, the MPG Pro Laptop. The alteration significantly improves the storage of a Pro, boosting RAM to 8GB, and more critically swapping in two new hard drives. Possible combinations include twin 100 or 200GB SSDs -- said to be four times faster than regular HDDs -- or a mix of one SSD and one 7200rpm 500GB HDD. A third option involves using two 500GB disks in a mirrored RAID configuration.

Microsoft accused of using teen, underpaid Chinese labor
A new National Labor Committee report today accused Microsoft of using sweatshop-style labor at the contractors that produce its mice. A factory owned by KYE in Dongguan, China allegedly uses 1,000 teenage students aged 16 to 17 during the summer as part of a "work study" project that ultimately amounts to child labor. In some cases, students as young as 14 or 15 may even have been used, and the company almost always keeps to hiring girls 25 or younger.

Hackintosh-friendly Dell Mini 10v discontinued
Filed under: HacksThe Dell Mini 10v, choice of netbook hackintosh owners everywhere, has apparently been discontinued as of a week ago. I discovered that today when I couldn't find any on Dell's site, and confirmed it with a live chat with a support representative who told me it was discontinued last week. A message was left for Dell's Media Relations team but was not immediately returned.
Dell's naming system is confusing, so it would be easy to see the "Mini 10" and think that it is available, but the "10v" has a chipset that works with Mac OS X; the regular Mini 10 does not

National Labor Committee report on Chinese CE factories uncovers deplorable conditions
Yesterday, the National Labor Committee produced a report on the working conditions at the KYE Factory in Dongguan City, Guangdong, China. KYE operates (like many factories in China) a live-work facility and generated sales of $400 million in 2008. KYE manufactures outsourced products for HP, Best Buy, Samsung, Foxconn, Acer, Logitech, and ASUS. Their largest customer, however, is reportedly Microsoft. Shipping times slide for 13-inch MacBook Pro
People ordering new 13-inch MacBook Pros from the online Apple Store may now have to wait several days. Shipping times have been extended to between one and three business days, having started out at approximately 24 hours. The 24-hour cap still applies to Apple's more powerful and expensive 15- and 17-inch systems.

ABC sees iPad app as proof online TV streaming works
ABC late Tuesday said that its iPad app has been extremely successful in the first 10 days since launch. The TV studio saw 205,000 downloads, or about 41 percent of the 500,000 iPad owners as of Wednesday. Viewers have also seen 650,000 episodes, or almost 3.2 TV shows per person.

News: ABC Player for iPad streams 650,000 television shows
The Wall Street Journal reports that the free ABC Player app for the iPad has been downloaded 205,000 times and used to watch 650,000 television episodes in the 10 days since the iPad’s release. Apple has filed for "iAds" trademark
Filed under: Apple CorporateEarlier today, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office published Apple's trademark application for "iAd," reportedly filed just two days prior to the service's announcement.
The application covers Apple in pretty much all forms of advertising, including "advertising agency services; advertising, marketing, and promotion services; advertising and marketing consultation; sales promotion services" It goes on and on. The listing is filed under "Wares and Services."

Twitter adds points of interest, justifies Tweetie deal
Twitter at its inaugural Chirp conference today said it would add points of interest to its geolocation features. Location-aware computers and handhelds will now recognize when they're at a notable location and identify any tweets as coming from that place. The feature could potentially be used to follow all updates from a particular location, such as a convention center or a concert.

Sleek Audio intros SA7 in-ear monitors
Sleek Audio on its Facebook page has confirmed a new set of high-end in-ear headphones in the SA7. The new flagship replaces the SA6 and retains its user-adjustable VQ system for adjusting treble and bass. The body is new, however, and machined from a single block of aluminum with a carbon fiber shell attached with titanium screws. Inside the body are dual balanced armature transducers surrounded by silicone that are said to be capable of absorbing up to 14,000 Gs of force, eliminating the fragility sometimes associated with earbuds.

ABC reveals iPad app statistics, says it's 'pleased' with results
There's no question that ABC's free iPad app was one of the highest-profile apps to launch with the device, and ABC has now finally revealed some hard numbers to give an indication of just how successful it has been. According to The Wall Street Journal, ABC says the app has been downloaded 205,000 times in the ten days following the iPad debut, and that is has been used to watch at least part of 605,000 TV shows. Rogers, O2 tease iPad data plans

Game dev hints at Nokia tablet with fast graphics
Game developer Fishlabs fueled rumors of a Nokia tablet earlier this week by quietly mentioning collaboration on a project. Both Fishlabs and Nokia are working together on a top-tier game for a device with a "large screen" and graphics hardware capable of OpenGL ES 2.0 effects. Analysts push Apple stock targets up to $300
Two key analysts have raised their price targets on Apple stock to around the $300 mark, citing increased expectations for several product lines. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has pushed his target from $287 to $299, referring to sales facts revealed at last Thursday's iPhone 4.0 event. Apple has quoted a figure of "more than" 50 million iPhones being sold to date; if this translates into 51 million units, the company should have sold about 7.8 million units in the March quarter alone. MIT researchers demonstrate more efficient wireless power
MIT researchers have been working on wireless power longer than most (Nikola Tesla aside), and it looks like they've now made a somewhat surprising discovery that could lead to more efficient wireless power. In addition to reducing the size of the transmitters and receives used in their system to something approaching practical, the researchers found that the system's efficiency at transmitting energy increased "significantly" if multiple devices are charged at the same time. Apple releases Backup 3.2
Filed under: MobileMeApple has released an update to its Backup software. The update also re-brands the Backup application as MobileMe Backup. The MobileMe Backup v3.2 update improves the reliability of backup restore and uses space more efficiently on your iDisk or local storage. Bang & Olufsen announces BeoLab 11 subwoofer for mid-May
Not getting enough "sub" with your "woofer"? Tweeters tweeting all over the place, ruining your enjoyment of the low-end? Finding yourself unable to fully appreciate your King Tubby LPs? We hate that! And so does Bang & Olufsen, fine purveyor of home audio equipment we can't afford. The company's newest, the BeoLab 11 subwoofer, is vaguely pornographic looking, albeit in a surreal way (please try and control yourselves in the comments, people). Smartphones taking over in mobile gaming
Smartphones are upturning the mobile gaming market, comScore found in a study today. The number of players on iPhones and other smartphones has jumped 60 percent in the past year to almost 21.4 million and has cut deeply into the portion of those using regular cellphones. Their numbers dropped a sharp 35 percent over the same period to just 29.5 million.

Israel blocks iPad imports over Wi-Fi concerns

Israelis had to wait a long time for the local launch of the iPhone; it was late last year before the country's three cell carriers began selling it, and some estimates indicated more than 80,000 unlocked phones were already in use there. Simon the robot gets upgraded with voice and face recognition, still loves organizing blocks
The last time we checked in on Simon, he was moving pretty slowly, moving some blocks from one bin to another, and while he was creepily silent, we still had high hopes for his future. Well, Simon's seemingly come a long way -- if recent footage of him and his creator, Georgia Institute of Technology researcher, Andrea Thomaz -- are to be believed. Simon's host of new features now include voice recognition (he's got a Stephen Hawking-style voice of his own), facial recognition, sound localization, plus he's way speedier now. First-year iPad sales could reach 7 million, analyst claims
Sales of the iPad could reach 6 million by the end of 2010, and 7 million within the first 12 months, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. The figure is based on a new survey of 2,500 people, of whom 21 percent say they are interested in buying an iPad. 4.6 percent have expressed "extreme interest" in buying an iPad, while 16.4 percent say they are "somewhat interested."

Intel outs Atom system-on-chip for home tablets, cars
Intel used the second day of its Developer Forum to unveil a new system-on-a-chip version of the Atom. Nicknamed Tunnel Creek, it will be based on the upcoming Moorestown Atom chip but will target computing in home users' embedded spaces: Intel suggests home media and phone tablets or in-car entertainment and nav systems. It will incorporate not just the memory controller but the graphics core as well, and in many cases it may not need an external chipset to handle other tasks.

Apple hat den internationalen Verkaufsstart des iPad aufgrund der großen Nachfrage um einen Monat nach hinten verschoben. Beta von Fedora 13 ist fertig
Das von Red Hat gesponserte Fedora-Projekt hat die einzige geplante Beta seiner Linux-Distribution Fedora 13 (Codename Goddard) freigegeben. Da sie sich wie schon die Alpha um eine Woche verspätet hat, haben die Entwickler den offiziellen Zeitplan angepasst und den Release-Termin der Final um eine Woche auf den 18. Israel verbietet Import von iPads
Wie die israelische Tageszeitung Haaretz meldet, wurde in Israel auf Anweisung des dortigen Kommunikationsministeriums der Import von iPads verboten. Auslöser dafür soll der großzügige Frequenzspielraum des integrierten Wireless-LAN nach 802.11n-Standard sein. Ursprünglich für Ende April angekündigt, verzögert sich der Verkaufsstart des iPads in Deutschland um einen ganzen Monat auf Ende Mai. Die Preise, die für das iPad in Europa verlangt werden, werden von Apple am 10. Mai mitgeteilt, so die Apple Pressemitteilung. Grund der Verzögerung ist die sehr hohe Nachfrage vor allem auch in den Staaten, die mit den aktuellen Produktionskapazitäten nicht befriedigt werden können. Bis heute hat Apple bereits 500.000 iPads verkauft. Eine gute Nachricht bleibt jedoch: Am Tag der Preisveröffentlichung wird es auch die Möglichkeit geben, die iPads in Deutschland vorzubestellen.

Apple delays international iPad release by a month
Citing "surprisingly strong US demand," Apple has officially delayed the international launch of the iPad. The device will, as a result, only go on sale in foreign countries towards the end of May, instead of late April as planned. Pre-orders however should open up on May 10th, at which time Apple says it will also reveal pricing in local currencies.

Next iPhone may get June 22 reveal
Apple may have committed to a specific date for unveiling the next iPhone, one possible scoop might have revealed. The company has purportedly booked off June 22nd at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and may use it for the WWDC keynote, according to ModMyi. UBS analyst praises new MacBook Pros and approaching clouds
Filed under: Apple Financial, Macbook ProThe sun had not even set on Tuesday when UBS analyst Maynard Um expressed his pleasure over Apple's new MacBook Pros.
"The MacBook Pro refresh positions Apple well heading into the education and back to school spending seasons," said Um, adding that Macs are still a critical part of Apple's growth, and that most financial expectations for the company could prove conservative.

Kein amerikanisches iPad für Israel
In Deutschland sind wir es gewohnt, dass uns gewisse Software aufgrund "bedenklicher Inhalte" auch mit erlangter Volljährigkeit vorenthalten wird. Während dies nach wie vor höchst fragwürdig ist, scheint es im Vergleich zu israelischer Auffassung von Zensur fast schon eine Lappalie zu sein. Die israelische Regierung hat verkündet, dass kein iPad aus den Vereinigten Staaten die Grenzen des Landes passieren darf. Warum? Das amerikanische iPad nutzt ein WLAN-Modem nach US-Standards, welches in Israel aufgrund der Sendeleistung schlicht nicht zugelassen ist, so die Tageszeitung Haaretz.

Insgesamt 15 Sicherheitslücken wurden mit den neusten Aktualisierungen für Acrobat und Adobe Reader geschlossen. Intel meldet Gewinnsprung von 400 Prozent im ersten Quartal
Intel hat im ersten Vierteljahr des Geschäftsjahres 2010 (bis 27. März) einen Nettogewinn von 2,4 Milliarden Dollar (1,8 Milliarden Euro) oder 0,43 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Neues iPhone am 22. Juni erwartet

Gizmodo hat den Vorteil des Redaktionsstandorts genutzt und sich ein neues MacBook Pro mit 2,66 Gigahertz Core i7-Prozessor geholt. BugMe!-Update: Nervt jetzt noch besser
Das jüngste Update der "Notizzettel"-App BugMe (hier im mobileTicker-PRAXISTEST) offeriert neben vielem anderem auch die Möglichkeit, die virtuelle Tastatur zum Texten von Notizen zu verwenden (statt mit den Fingern Schreibschrift oder Graphiken zu "malen"). Neu ist auch der Zähler ("Badge") für gesetzte Alarme, die Alarm-Unterstützung auf iPod touch sowie "Quick Alarms", eine Art "Eieruhr" für naheliegende Termine wie beispielsweise die Wiederholung eines nicht zustande gekommenen Anrufs oder eine ablaufende Parkuhr. Die nochmals funktionsreichere und daher weiterhin besonders empfehlenswerte App kostet 1,59 Euro.

Bald vierter Schweizer Apple Store in Basel?
Das Schuhgeschäft Botty räumt sein Domizil an der Freien Strasse in Basel nach über 26 Jahren — Grund dafür sei eine Mietzinserhöhung von rund 50%. Botty zieht nun «per September 2011» in eine neue Lokalität an der Gerbergasse 44, welche noch bis Februar 2011 von der Firma Fricker Shoes belegt wird. Danach folge eine intensive Umbauphase, bevor im September 2011 Botty in die neuen Räumlichkeiten einzieht. Angeblich soll bereits ein Nachfolger für Botty bereitstehen, um die prominente Lage an der Freie Strasse 47 zu übernehmen: Es soll Apple sein. Nach einem Bericht der Print-Ausgabe der Basler Zeitung von gestern soll Apple dort angeblich den vierten Apple Retail Store der Schweiz eröffnen.
Auf Anfrage von macprime.ch bestätigte Botty Basel, dass man die Lokalität an der Freie Strasse in Basel nicht vor Sommer 2011 räumen wird, entsprechend wäre mit einem Apple Retail Store an dieser Lokalität erst gegen Ende 2011 oder Anfang 2012 zu rechnen.

TSMC: Nach 28 nm direkt zur 20-nm-Fertigung

Neuer Mini DisplayPort überträgt Audio und Video
In den Systemspezifikationen zu den neuen MacBook-Modellen erwähnt Apple einen Mini DisplayPort-auf-HDMI-Adapter. Diesen sucht man derzeit allerdings vergebens im Apple Store. Mobile DTV gains national mobile content service, broadcast group support

Xtra-Zone-App endlich im App Store angekommen
Die Swisscom hat in der Nacht auf heute die Xtra-App im App Store freigeschalten. Erst gestern berichteten wir, das die lange erwartete App von Apple eigentlich schon längst validiert wurde, von der Swisscom jedoch noch zurückgehalten wurde. Nun ist die App mit über einem halben Jahr Verspätung endlich im App Store angekommen und kann kostenlos geladen werden.

Intel wraps up 'best first quarter ever' by teasing new dual-core Atoms for Q2
Android support for Moorestown isn't the only morsel of Intel news to come out today. In an earnings call today that kicked off with word of a 288 percent year-over-year net income increase -- its "best first [fiscal] quarter ever" reportedly -- Intel CEO Paul Otellini said, "the next innovation coming out on Atom is dual core, which comes out in the second quarter." Pro Softnet Corporation has unveiled a new external storage system, the IDrive Portable for Mac. The device connects directly to a Macís USB port and offers plug-and-play compatibility. To start off day 2 of 360iDev here in San Jose, California, Henry Balanon hosted a panel to discuss the marketing and promotion of iPhone and iPad apps. Panelists Brian Chen of Wired, Rana Sobhany (author of "Marketing iPhone Apps" from O'Reilly), Doodle Jump creator Igor Pusenjak, and Playhaven's Raymond Lau held court and spoke to developers about how to promote and market their apps, both, with the press and on the App Store.

CameraBag makes the trek over to the iPad

Sony to release 'affordable' 35mm digital cinema camera to fend off RED and Panasonic
While RED ushered in the revolution, the camera wars are really just starting for the film industry, with Sony showing off at NAB today one of its upcoming 35mm (full frame) digital cinema cameras after ARRI hogged the spotlight last week. Sony's 35mm roadmap already had the industry atwitter, but news that the camera will be "affordable" is news indeed. iPhone Screentaker updated with iPad templates

Fabian Kreiser has recently updated his screen capturing app for Mac OS X to include support iPad screen captures. Like previous iterations of the app, version 1.2 of iPhone Screentaker allows you to add certain design elements to your iPad screenshots. These include encasing them an iPad and setting the orientation background color. Images can then be saved as either JPG or PNG, with the option to scale to fit iTunes.

Stardom intros two new Pro Drive RAID storage systems
Stardom has introduced two new additions to its line of RAID storage systems, the Pro Drive PD2510 and PD2520. Each device is designed to hold two 2.5-inch hard drives configurable in RAID arrays. The PD2510 supports RAID 1 mirroring to protect against data loss if one drive fails. Users can fit the drive within the Mac Proís HDD bay, while data transfer speeds are claimed to reach 3Gbps.

Intel profit up 288% thanks to netbook backlash
Intel today posted first quarter 2010 results that were its best ever for the start of a year. The company made a record $10.3 billion in revenue and nearly tripled its net profit compared to a year ago, up 288 percent to $2.4 billion. Most of that was owed to high-end notebook processors, as its overall PC group was saved by all-time high mobile chip revenue.

Viewsonic rolls out energy-efficient VT2300LED LCD TV
Well, it's taken quite a while since its debut at CES in January, but Viewsonic has now finally managed to get its 23-inch VT2300LED LCD TV out the door. While there's not exactly a ton of stand-out features here, the side lit LED backlighting does apparently help to deliver energy savings of 30 to 50% over traditional LCDs, and you'll get some decent specs all around, including a full 1080p resolution, a 5 ms response time, an ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner, and three HDMI ports, among other standard fare. What's more, while this one has a list price of $399, it looks like some retailers (including Amazon) are already selling for it as little as $299.

Steve Jobs defends lack of i3, i5 CPUs in 13" MacBook Pros
Steve Jobs allegedly sent a personal response to an e-mail inquiry regarding the lack of Intel Core i3 or i5 CPUs in the refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro. The executive suggested that "far faster graphics and 10 hour battery life trump 10-20% faster CPU," according to the e-mail posted on 9 to 5 Mac. The company chose to stick with Core 2 Duo components for the smallest MacBook Pros.

The kids are iAlright, says Gene Munster
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says more kids want iPhones. Fortune has Mr. Munster hanging out with high schoolers for one of his semi-annual surveys of teen buying habits in the US.
In a research note on the survey, Munster said, "Apple's dominance in the [consumer electronics] and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked."
According to his findings:
Plans to buy an iPhone in the next six months have risen from 16% a year ago to 22% last fall to 31% today
14% of the kids surveyed already own an iPhone, up from last year's 8%, but down a point from last fall's 15%
87% of the kids surveyed own an MP3 player, 92% of which are iPods.
