Apple hat das Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update in Version 3.2 veröffentlicht. Mit der neuen Version wird die Unterstützung von RAW-Formaten in Aperture 3 und iPhoto '09 weiter ausgebaut. Google buys firm of former Apple employees
Filed under: HardwareGoogle's purchase of a firm staffed with former Apple employees is surrounded by mystery, according to AppleInsider. Agnilux is a small San Jose startup founded by a few former Apple employees, most of whom left the mothership right around the time of the P.A. Semi acquisition.

Die unglaubliche Geschichte vom verlorenen iPhone
Klingt unglaubwürdig: Ein Apple-Entwickler vergisst 30 km vom Apple-Campus entfernt - ausgerechnet in einer Bar und angeblich nach dem Genuss von deutschem Bier - einen äusserlich als iPhone 3G getarnten Prototypen des iPhones der nächsten Generation. Ein anderer Typ findet das Wunderding - und verkauft es für 5.000 US-Dollar an das Online-Magazin Gizmodo, das daraus eine Riesen-Story macht und ausführlich über Innenleben und neue Features berichtet. Natürlich schafft es diese Geschichte sofort in alle Nachrichten und kurz nachdem so gut wie jeder Interessierte auf dem Planeten eine eigene Meinung dazu hat, verlangt Apple das Gerät zurück. TUAW reader braintrust: Filling up your iBookShelf
Filed under: TUAW BookshelfLet's face it. iBook offerings are, at least for the moment, pretty limited. They're also on the slightly pricey side for anyone who emptied their piggy bank on a new iPad. Even those public libraries that offer ePub lending aren't set up to make those titles available for iPad reading. You generally need special Mac or Windows software, and there's DRM aplenty.
That having been said, there are many great readable books out there for the asking. The problem is, as with nearly all free options, a very low signal-to-noise ratio. Sure, you can download one of the top Project Gutenberg titles, but those top twenty lists tend to be uninspiring. Gett

Microsoft snags $14.5b revenue, $4.01b net income for Q3
About an hour before the company's analyst call, Microsoft has unloaded its third quarter fiscal results, which to be blunt, are a marked improvement over last year's momentous (but not in a good way) profits downturn. Reported revenue is $14.5 billion for the quarter ending March 31st, beating Wall Street expectations and culminating in a $4.01 billion net income. Those figures exclude a $305 million deferral related to Office 2010 but do include $78 million the folks in Redmond gave to Yahoo! in a search deal. Windows sales shoot up 28% year over year
Microsoft this afternoon reported its best-ever winter quarter owing in large part to Windows 7. Revenue from its core OS jumped 28 percent year-over-year and helped Microsoft get an all-time high $14.5 billion of revenue. It also touted much improved growth in revenue from Bing search ads, Xbox Live and web-based services.

WinX DVD Ripper for Mac extracts video, audio
Digiarty has launched WinX DVD Ripper for Mac, a port of an earlier Windows-only utility. The program is able to convert protected or unprotected movie DVDs into various filetypes, such as AVI, FLV, MP4 and MOV. Mac OS X 10.6.3 may allow hardware-accelerated Flash
A new Video Decode Acceleration Framework in the recent Mac OS X 10.6.3 update may let Macs have truly hardware-accelerated Flash video for the first time. The API would let developers use the graphics chipset to directly decode H.264 video on unibody MacBooks and any other Mac with a GeForce 9400M, 320M, GT 330M or similar parts. It's intended for "advanced developers" but should be accessible to anyone who downloads the extension for Xcode.

A new version of SplashData's SplashID application for the iPhone and iPod touch has been released in the App Store. What almost three weeks with an iPad has taught this blogger
Filed under: iPadOK, I've had my iPad for exactly 19 days today. Over that time, just about everyone who knows that I have the device has asked the same question: "So, how do you like it?" The easy answer is that I love this device in a very unnatural way, but there's more to the answer than that. I've learned a lot about myself and how I use my computers through the time I spend with the iPad every day.
The iPad provides a different computing experience than, say, a MacBook. While some actions, such as e-mail and browsing, are quite familiar and comfortable, things like using iWork are very different due to the method of interacting with the device. Onkyo's just added the DP312 nettop to its lineup. This Ion-based box boasts a 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD, and a DVD player to boot. AMD six-core Phenom IIs may cost under $315
AMD's six-core Phenom II X6 could cost just a fraction of the price of an Intel model, mainboard producers said Thursday. The 2.8GHz 1055T and the 3.2GHz 1090T Black Edition would cost just $207 and $315 each versus the typical $999 for Intel's six-core, 3.33GHz Core i7 Extreme Edition. Both could result in six-core mainstream PCs well ahead of Intel's schedule, which may not have these options until later in the year.

Psyko ships 5.1 computer gaming headset
Canada-based Psyko Audio Labs has officially released its 5.1 PC gaming headset we briefly sampled at CES. Available in North America, the headset uses 3D sound technology that helps wearers better place their opponents in first-person shooter games through sound. The headset uses wave guides to send sound to an ear, producing a natural latency rather than an electronically generated one, for what is a more natural delivery, Psyko says.

Apple Technical Note TN2267: an opening for GPU-accelerated Flash?
There couldn't possibly be any less fanfare from Apple on this, but the company's recently released Technical Note TN2267 for OS X 10.6.3 might just be the GPU-sized opening that Adobe and, consequently, Flash users have been waiting for. Here's the key bit:
The Video Decode Acceleration framework is a C programming interface providing low-level access to the H.264 decoding capabilities of compatible GPUs such as the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M. It is intended for use by advanced developers who specifically need hardware accelerated decode of video frames.

Denn der chinesische Konzertpianist Lang Lang ist für seine Zugaben bei einem Konzert in der Symphony Hall in San Fancisco mit einem iPad auf die Bühne um die Welt mit einem technologisch enhanceten Rimski-Korsakow Hummelflug zu beglücken. Patent filing references possible touchscreen Macs
Apple may continue to have an interest in building a touchscreen Mac, a newly disclosed patent application hints. Titled Scheme for Authenticating without Password Exchange, the filing refers to several possible input types, including "a keyboard, a microphone, touch screen input and mouse input," interfacing with a central chipset and then components like displays, storage and networking. Apple adds that displays could use DVI or HDMI connections, and/or be associated with notebooks, "small form factor personal computers" or smartphones.

ARM: Apple has no reason to buy us
ARM CEO Warren East quickly moved to defuse rumors of a possible Apple takeover with a response to the suspicions. He noted that ARM's inherent nature, where it licenses architecture rather than make the chips themselves, means there would be little incentive to actually buy the company. Twitwee Clock checks tweets with old world charm
We've seen a few cuckoo clock-inspired projects over the years, but one of the more obvious, a twitter clock, hasn't been among them -- until now, that is. Dubbed the Twitwee Clock, this contraption built by Haroon Baig relies on an Arduino (what else?) and an LCD to display incoming tweets, and an old fashioned mechanical cuckoo to notify you when a new one has arrived. That could obviously get on your nerves pretty quickly if you're simply watching your main Twitter feed, but the clock can also be setup to follow any twitter stream or search to give the cuckoo a bit of a rest. Aus einer internen Pressemitteilung der deutschen Telekom, welche wir aus anonymer Quelle vor der VÖ erhalten haben, gehen die ersten Details zum iPad Tarifangebot der Telekom für Neu- und Bestandskunden hervor. Die Tarife sind bislang noch ohne subventionierte Geräte, jedoch könnte dies noch folgen. Samsung stellt 3LCD-Projektor vor

When Katie Wilson, media designer with our friends at Make, went to pick up her pup recently, she was greeted not by the dog-sitter. Instead, it was Drozid -- part electric wheelchair, part refrigerator, part robot, wielding a laser-scoped air rifle -- that arrived with her change (and a cold beer). Apple announces dates for iTunes Festival London 2010

Apple has announced dates for the 2010 London iTunes Festival. The festival will run every night in July this summer. Sixty artists will be performing over thirty-one days at Camden's Roundhouse in London. The first three nights will feature performances from Scissor Sisters, Tony Bennett and Ozzy Osbourne.

Toshiba REGZA R1 and H1 series promises USB storage, HDD, adventure
If you were contemplating a move to Japan (you know, because you're sick of waiting for all those feature-packed REGZA HDTVs to make it stateside) the idea just got a little more compelling. The new REGZA R1 series (up to 42-inches) and REGZA H1 series (32 and 37-inch displays) sport USB ports for recording and external storage. LG Display tripling OLED capacity in 2011
LG Display said today that it would triple its capacity to make OLED displays by the second half of 2011. It plans to spend the equivalent of $225.7 million on a new production facility that should be ready in the summer and will ramp up over time to reach the full production levels next year. Google today confirmed that its in-store view for Google Maps is real but won't be as some expected. Apple has quietly updated the design of 85-watt MagSafe power adapter used with the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros. The new connector design features an aluminum tip instead of the plastic one which is still available on the 60-watt MagSafe power adapters used for 13-inch MacBook Pros and MacBooks.

Desktop for iPad plays some 'multitasking' tricks that are useful
Filed under: iPadDesktop for iPad tries to bring a little (sort of) multitasking joy into your life. Through some split screen tricks, it can give you a browser and let you write an email on the same screen. Of course, you can cut and paste between the two. You can also use the split screen functionality to accommodate a calculator, currency converter, dictionary, maps with geolocation, a translator, unit converter, and a weather app.
It's a pretty clever idea, and I found a few good uses for it, like selectively sending parts of a Web page to someone in an email. Yes, you could do it with the standard cut and paste, but it was nice to see the body of the email and the Web page at the same time.

Verizon growth, profit slower than AT&T's despite Droid
Verizon today provided a mild shock to the cellular industry by reporting relatively disappointing results for the early part of 2010. Although still taking advantage of phones like the Motorola Droid, its subscriber growth slowed down to 1.5 million new cellphone users in the winter and was noticeably slower than AT&T's 1.9 million additions over the same timeframe. Apple blasts Flash as 'closed and proprietary'
Adobe has it "backwards" when it comes to web standards and the iPhone, claims Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. The statement comes in response to a quote from Adobe product manager Mike Chambers, noting that Section 3.3.1 of the latest iPhone developer agreement effectively bans the use of Flash cross-compilers for iPhone apps. McAfee-Update bringt PCs mit Windows XP zum Absturz
McAfee hat vor Problemen mit einem gestern veröffentlichten Signaturupdate (Version 5958 DAT) gewarnt. Es stuft die Windows-Systemdatei "svchost.exe" fälschlicherweise als den Schädling "w32/wecorl.a" ein. Davon betroffen sind nur Nutzer von Windows XP SP3. Nokia bleibt hinter Erwartungen zurück
Nokia hat im ersten Quartal 2010 9,522 Milliarden Euro umgesetzt, drei Prozent mehr als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres und 21 Prozent weniger als im Vorquartal. Nokia ships 21.5m smart devices, outpaced by Apple
Nokia this morning claimed a minor return to form with an upturn in its phone business, especially smartphones. It shipped a much larger 21.5 million "converged devices," which includes both its smartphones and the Booklet 3G, in the first quarter of the year. Apple Liste: Kein Support mehr für iPod 1. Generation und Co !
Es sind nicht mehr ganz zwei Monate, bis Apple sich von den ersten Produkten verabschiedet. Ab dem 15. Juni 2010 genauer gesagt sollen sämtliche Apple-Produkte keinen Support mehr erhalten.

Leaked iPhone a near-final prototype
The escaped iPhone prototype is a late-stage model that very likely reflects the final design, some added insight shows today. The N90_DVT_GE4X_0493 label is now known to refer to both the codename for the next phone (N90) and that it's a Design Verification Test unit, or one made "very late" into development to prove that the finished design works. Contacts at the company have told tech writer John Gruber that few changes are made by that stage and that this would likely represent finished hardware.

Elpida baut 40-nm-Speicher für DDR3-DIMMs mit 32 GByte

Mein Kollege Felix Rieseberg wird mich vermutlich in der Luft zerfetzen, aber ich wage mich, einen Kommentar zu aktuellen Web 2.0-Geschehnissen zu verfassen und auf den "Veröffentlichen-Knopf" zu drücken. Anscheinend eine Lösung gefunden: Navigon aktualisiert Mobile Navigator D-A-CH, heißt nun EU10
Wie uns Apfeltalker Insane.J gerade mitgeteilt hat, erschien heute eine neue Version der Navigationsapp "Mobile Navigator D-A-CH". Erst vor wenigen Tagen schrieb Navigon, dass es bald eine Lösung für das D-A-CH-Problem geben würde, diese jedoch gesondert geprüft werden müsse. Was genau sich nun geändert hat, versuchen wir dem Changelog des Updates auf Version 1.5.0 zu entnehmen: MyRoutes, PanoramaView 3D, Integration von Twitter & Facebook und mehr Karten. Navigon veröffentlicht MobileNavigator EU10 als Upgrade für DACH-Kunden
Mit der Einführung der für Telekom-Kunden kostenlosen iPhone-Navigationslösung Navigon Select verschwand der bis dahin für regulär 69 Euro verkaufte MobileNavigator DACH komplett aus dem App Store. Damit entfiel zum Ärger vieler Bestandskunden auch die Möglichkeit, Updates für die zuvor verkaufte Version bereitzustellen. Grundsätzlich besteht nach dem Kauf einer App zwar keinerlei Anspruch auf Aktualisierungen, im Interesse der Kundenzufriedenheit sollte man sich als Anbieter jedoch zumindest ein Hintertürchen für Fehlerbehebungen und Kompatiblitätsupdates offen halten.
Navigon löst diese Problematik nun durch eine für ehemalige DACH-Käufer kostenloses Update auf den neuen MobileNavigator EU10. Vor über einer Woche veröffentlichte Microsoft elf Sicherheitspatches. Einer dieser Patches sollte ein Sicherheitsleck im Windows Server 2000 beheben. EMC hebt nach Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung Jahresprognose an
Die EMC Corporation hat ihren Umsatz im ersten Quartal 2010 (bis 31. März) gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 23 Prozent auf 3,9 Milliarden Dollar gesteigert und damit zum zweiten Mal in Folge ein Rekordergebnis erzielt. Google hat erstmals eine Statistik zu Anfragen veröffentlicht, die das Unternehmen von Regierungen erhält, um Inhalte aus seinem Angebot zu entfernen oder Daten zu einzelnen Nutzern herauszugeben. Wie aus einem Bericht des London Evening Standard über das aktuelle Finanzgemurmel der britischen Hauptstadt hervorgeht, könnte Apple eine Übernahme des Chipherstellers ARM planen. ARM, ursprünglich sogar von Apple gegründet, entwickelte bereits zahlreiche Chips der iPhone, iPod touch und iPad-Generationen, sowie Chips für die Mobiltelefone anderer Hersteller. McAfee-Update löscht Windows-Systemdatei
McAfee hat vor Problemen mit einem gestern veröffentlichten Signaturupdate (Version 5958 DAT) gewarnt. Es stuft die Windows-Systemdatei "svchost.exe" fälschlicherweise als den Schädling "w32/wecorl.a" ein. Davon betroffen sind nur Nutzer von Windows XP SP3. AAPL schiesst durch die Decke
Die Apple Aktie bekam grossen Aufschwung nach der vorgestrigen Bekanntgabe der rosigen Quartalszahlen von Apple. Der Kurs stieg am gestrigen Handesltag über 14.63 US-Dollar bzw 5.98 Prozent an und schloss damit auf einem neuen Hoch von 259.22 US-Dollar, nur ein Dollar unter dem ebenfalls gestern aufgestellten intraday Allzeithoch von 260.25 US-Dollar. Die Marktkapitalisierung von Apple liegt damit mittlerweile bei 235.06 Milliarden US-Dollar. Verschiedene Analysten haben das Kursziel nach den guten Quartalszahlen gestern auf über 300 US-Dollar — zum Teil gar auf 350 US-Dollar — angesetzt. Jason Schwarz von TheStreet.com rechnet gar damit, dass Apple früher oder später gar Exxon Mobil (326.05 Milliarden US-Dollar) vom Thron der am wertvollsten US-Firmen stossen könnte. Microsoft ist mit 275.04 Milliarden US-Dollar auf Platz zwei, Apple folgt vor Wal-Mart und General Electric auf Platz drei.

WEKO: Orange darf Sunrise nicht übernehmen
1.5 Milliarden schwer hätte die Übernahme werden sollen, ein grosser Gegenspieler gegen die übermächtige Swisscom hätte erschaffen werden sollen, nun hat die Wettbewerbskommission (WEKO) die Übernahme der Sunrise durch Orange untersagt. Laut WEKO fiel der Entscheid gegen den Zusammenschluss, weil man mehr als nur zwei Mobilfunkunternehmen im Schweizer Netz haben möchte und weil ein Unternehmen «Orange-Sunrise» eine kollektiv marktbeherrschende Stellung im Mobilfunkmarkt innegehabt hätte. Auch wäre mit der Sunrise der im Markt «aktivste Netzbetreiber» ausgeschieden.
Zusammen wären Orange und Sunrise auf einen Marktanteil von ca. 38 Prozent im Mobilfunkmarkt und ca. 13 Prozent im Breitbandmarkt gekommen – damit wird nun nichts, die Anbieter dürfen sich nicht zusammen schliessen, bleiben Konkurrenten und müssen sich weiterhin alleine gegen das jeweils andere und die Swisscom aufstellen.
Die WEKO meint zudem, dass mit drei Anbietern dem Schweizer Mobilfunkmarkt eine gewisse Wettbewerbsdynamik bestehen bliebe und

Vudu starts offering special features with Avatar
What does the Vudu HDX version of Avatar have that the Blu-ray version doesn't? That's right, special features. Typically you don't get 'em with a digital download, but Vudu figured the release of Avatar is the perfect time to change that forever. Dodgy rumor has Apple buying ARM
An unusual rumor late Wednesday has claimed that Apple might try to buy ARM. The gossip was sparked by the iPhone maker's record quarterly results and a believe that the over $40 billion in cash might be used to corner the mobile processor market. Speculation by stock traders sent shares of ARM up 8.1 percent on the UK exchange.

PlayStation 3.30 firmware is a go, 3D games support 'prepped'
When the PlayStation blog said firmware 3.30 -- you know, the one that "preps" the console for added 3D support (games for now, not movies) -- was "coming soon," we figured that meant some indeterminate day or week ahead. Not so; we just turned on our Sony consoles and, lo and behold, we got a new update sent our way. There's nothing you can do with the third dimension at this point, but take solace in a handful of Trophy enhancements. And Linux support? Don't be silly, it's not coming back.

Dell readying Looking Glass tablet, Mini 5 upgrade
Dell's larger tablet strategy will start off mildly, another leak suggested this evening. So far codenamed the Looking Glass, the 7-inch version should use an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Android 2.1 but will largely be an upsized version of the Mini 5. Engadget understands that the Looking Glass should still have the 800x480 resolution, and its main advantages will be an ATSC or DVB-T TV tuner along with a possible AT&T U-verse TV access.

Dell Looking Glass tablet leaks: Tegra 2 coming your way in November
We'd already heard that Dell was working on larger tablets, and tonight's huge leak brought us tons of info on the Looking Glass, a seven-inch big brother to the Streak 5 that's due out in November. For starters, it's running Android 2.1 on a Tegra 2 processor, with an optional TV tuner module so you can watch ATSC or DVB-T programming on the seven-inch 800x480 display -- the same resolution as the Streak, which is sort of weak. Dell Smoke slaps Android in the wild form factor you secretly wanted
Okay, so imagine a Pixi, but awesome. We think that what you'd get would closely resemble the phone that Dell's whipping up with a codename of "Smoke," running Android Froyo atop a 2.8-inch QVGA display (looks more like WVGA to us, but whatevs). Dell Flash to offer Android Froyo in a 'dramatic' package
If Dell's vision of a mainstream Android device for 2011 ends up materializing, we're not sure we even need a high end anymore. Okay, that's not true -- we'll obviously be power freaks to the bitter end -- but the so-called "Flash" that we've just caught wind of (no relation to the Adobe product of the same name, as far as we can tell) looks to be a lovely piece of kit. Dell Thunder explodes Android with 4.1-inch OLED screen, promises Hulu app
It's like Dell's making up for lost time with smartphones: while "Lightning" is the company's answer to Windows Phone extravagance, the Dell Thunder that's leaking out along side does up Android 2.1 with similar aplomb and a 4.1-inch WVGA OLED screen. Motorola Devour graced with update, bug fixes are the main story
Alright, Devour users, we know the very first thing you want to know is whether this is Android 2.1 we're dealing with here -- and sadly, the answer to that is a forlorn "no." LiSeng Vbook cuts the Entourage Edge down to size
The Entourage Edge may be many things, but pocketable it is not. LiSeng looks set to address that shortcoming with its own Vbook, however, which packs a pair of 5-inch screens into a foldable form factor that should at least fit in a large coat pocket. Amazon confirms Kindle reaching Target stores April 25
Amazon today confirmed rumors and said it would ship the Kindle to Target retail stores on April 25th. The rollout will see the six-inch version of the e-reader arrive in test form at both Target's pioneering store in Minneapolis store as well as 102 stores in southern Florida.
