Aigo tablet rivals iPad with dual-core Tegra, Android
Specs have been leaked of an Aigo tablet that could challenge the iPad in at least China. The N700 would be smaller, with a 7-inch, 800x480 display, and would run Android 2.1. The device can reportedly play back 1080p video thanks to an HDMI output, and supports Flash 10.1 on the web.

ABC near launching 3G-capable iPad app
ABC is reportedly ready to launch an updated version of its iPad app, according to the Business Insider. The app will allow users to stream videos across 3G networks, overcoming the Wi-Fi limitation of the current version. Briefly: iPad 3G SIM card mod, new theme from Keynote Zone
A new forum post at ModMyi.com details how to use an existing AT&T SIM card in the recently-released iPad 3G. In order to make the card work, people must trace the shape of a micro SIM card onto the full-sized one, and cut it out with an X-Acto knife. The result should work in the iPad's micro SIM slot after changing the device's APN setting to "phone." Alternately, the carrier testing mode can be used in iTunes to enter a custom IPCC file. Pure to bring its Internet radios to the US on July 1st

AUO patent win against LG Display may hurt Apple, others
AU Optronics this weekend won a patent lawsuit against LG Display that could hamper the computer and handheld businesses. A ruling by a District of Delaware court found that LG had violated four patents relating to the performance and reliability of LCDs. Taiwan-based AUO now said it would seek a permanent ban on displays that infringe on the patents and was hoping companies would voluntarily stop buying the displays.

Droid Incredible's mysterious OTA update actually fixes Exchange bug
Saturday afternoon, reports came in that Verizon's new Droid Incredible had already received its first OTA update. Nobody knew quite what it did and few even received it, but some figured it probably fixed the smattering of random reboots and radio bugs experienced by some early adopters. Review: AblePlanet NC300 vs. Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b
MacNN has reviewed two sets of noise-cancelling headphones, the AblePlanet NC300 and the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b. While already cutting out some ambient sound through over-the-ear designs, the headphones each feature active noise reduction, powered by single AAA batteries. The NC300s are noted as being the cheaper of the options, and more sensitive, as well as more convenient thanks to inline volume control. Microsoft: H.264 in HTML5 about support, not cash
Microsoft backed up its choice of H.264 for HTML5 video today by casting it as a matter of supporting the audience. The video codec provides "great certainty" as gives developers the most possible support: most mobile hardware supports it and most software tools recognize it, the company said. It further gives Microsoft a clearer idea of what license rights it has and who it might have to pay.

ABC said to have 3G-compatible iPad app on the way
We had a pretty clear indication that a 3G-compatible ABC iPad app could just be a matter of a relatively simple fix, and it looks like that is indeed the case -- Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that ABC has already submitted an updated app that adds 3G streaming to Apple for approval. Barring some unforeseen issues, that seems to be all but assured, and it will presumably function much like the Netflix app by knocking things down to a lower bitrate when you leave your WiFi comfort zone. Majority see iPad 3G as companion, not computer replacement
Most people buying the iPad 3G have no intention of replacing a Mac or Windows computer with it, claims UBS analyst Maynard Um. The firm surveyed approximately 75 people lined up outside of New York Apple Stores on Friday, and found that 94 percent intended the device to be complementary. Most pointed to web browsing, video and other forms of entertainment as the device's main uses, with "only a handful" expecting to do e-book reading.

Pro photographer hints at Canon EOS 5D Mark III in 2011
Well-known pro photographer Vincent LaForet during a recent online workshop hinted that Canon is developing a third generation of the EOS 5D. AUO scores patent lawsuit decision over LG Display
LG Display may want to be more careful where it aims those patent lawsuits next time, after a dispute it kicked off with AUO has lead to a finding by a U.S. District court that it actually violated AUO's patents and not the other way around. Say hello to patent Nos 6,778,160, 6,689,629, 7,125,157 and 7,090,506, covering "technologies help to improve response time, improve reliability of LCDs, solve the problem of defects in the displayed images, and provide a very compact structure useful for small handheld devices, respectively." So far AUO is indicating that it will seek an injunction preventing LG from shipping its potentially infringing HDTVs, monitors, notebooks and even phones to the U.S, plus some other legal tough talk for good measure. Screenshots emerge of Steam Linux client, BeOS wonders if it's next
There's some old adage referring to smoke and fire meant to explain this phenomenon, but frankly, we're too focused on the promise of the future to go and look it up. World of Warcraft streaming to an iPad
Filed under: iPadFor years I've wanted a decent World of Warcraft (WoW) iPhone app from Blizzard. There's an armory app that lets you browse your gear and so forth, but that's not enough. I'd like to track auctions, access in-game email, visit the bank and so on.
All of that went out the window when I saw this.
It's a screenshot of WoW supposedly being streamed to an iPad via Gaikai. Gaikai is a new service, currently in beta, that hosts and streams any game to your computer via a browser. Basically, you play a game that lives on their servers while watching a streaming video of the action. Their website

LG confirms Android-powered Ally, coming May 20th
Well, this hasn't exactly followed the usual smartphone launch route, but LG has now officially confirmed the existence of its new Android-powered LG Ally handset, although it's still not doing much talking about the phone itself. It has, however, revealed that the phone will be available on May 20th (presumably on Verizon, though LG oddly doesn't mention a carrier in its press release), and that it will naturally feature plenty of Iron Man 2 tie-in content, including an augmented reality application of some sort. Otherwise, LG is only saying that the phone will have a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keypad, and it's pointing folks towards an Iron Man 2 tie-in site (linked below) that, last we checked, still says to

Wii Controller Demo brings your Wiimote and Android phone 2gether, 4ever
Ryan Frawley still has a fair bit of work ahead of him, but his Wii Controller Demo app for Android sure holds an awful lot of promise. Available now for no charge (though a $1 paid version is available for those who dig his work), this here software allows Android users to create a Bluetooth link between their Wii remote and handset, and then log input information on the mobile's display. Adobe to give free Android smartphones to employees
Adobe will soon give away free Android-based phones to its workers, say three sources described as "familiar with the plan." The phones will allegedly have an upcoming mobile version of Flash -- v10.1 -- pre-installed, suggesting that the handout should before the end of June, Adobe's official deadline for the Flash update. ASUS Eee Pad to use Windows 7, Acer MID to fight iPad
ASUS' Eee Pad will be available in two versions, said the company president and CEO, Jerry Shen. In addition to the ARM-powered tablet PC with Google Android or Chrome, the previously mentioned Microsoft version will carry Windows 7 and an Intel Atom processor. BlackBerry Cobalt/BlackPad tablet coming in 2011?
Unofficial reports seemingly confirm Research In Motion is indeed working on a tablet. Thus far codenamed BlackPad or Cobalt, the device is expected to get an 8.9-inch screen, with RIM reportedly ordering such displays from Hon Hai. Internet Explorer drops below 60% web share
Internet Explorer has dropped below a 60 percent share of web traffic for the first time, Net Applications found in its latest study. Microsoft's browser dropped to 59.95 percent of web use in April after Google Chrome leapt half a point ahead to 6.73 percent in the same timeframe. Firefox and Safari also ate into Internet Explorer's share with small gains that put them at 24.59 percent and 4.72 percent each.

Filed under: AppleAccording to the New York Post, The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are negotiating which of them will launch an inquiry into a clause in the iPhone OS 4 SDK that bans the porting of software originally written for Adobe's Flash, Sun's Java or Microsoft's Silverlight/Mono to the iPhone OS.
The issue at hand is this: Does the restriction kill competition by forcing developers to create applications that only run on Apple's devices rather than work with other operating systems and hardware like those from Google and RIM?

Wie Apple per Pressemitteilung bekannt gab, verkaufte sich das iPad seit dem Verkaufsstart am 3. April bereits eine Million Mal. iPad-Anwender haben bereits über 12 Millionen Apps aus dem App Store und über 1,5 Millionen eBooks aus dem neuen iBookstore heruntergeladen.

Google may face antitrust suit against AdMob deal
The Federal Trade Commission is on the verge of suing Google to block its buyout of AdMob, multiple leaks insisted today and over the weekend. Sources at both of the involved companies and close to the FTC now expect an antitrust lawsuit or preliminary injunction to be imposed by next week and possibly later this week. Use mailsend to send email from the Terminal

There are times that I want my iMac to be able to email me: when certain scripts run via cron or launchd, when certain events happen (a backup has been completed), etc. I've found that none of the included command-line programs work.
The good news is that, with a UNIX foundation, it was fairly easy to find a free program which would do just that.
A little searching turned up a free program called mailsend, which will work. For this example I will be using a Gmail account, which requires OpenSSL. Your mail server may not require OpenSSL support, but if it's possible, I encourage you

Antitrust probe into Apple could be imminent, source claims
Apple will soon be the subject of a US antitrust inquiry, according to a source contacted by the New York Post. The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are, at present, said to be just days away from deciding which organization will launch the probe, looking into whether Apple might be unfairly controlling development of iPhone and iPad apps. The company recently banned the use of third-party tools, most notably Adobe's Flash cross-compiler.

News: iPad 3G teardown reveals new chips, antennas, more
iFixit has posted a full teardown of the iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G, finding several noticable differences between it and its Wi-Fi-only counterpart. We've been covering the progression of SandForce for over a year now, creator of smart SSD processors that extend the life of flash storage by better spreading writes across them, boosting performance and reliability along the way. Sony gearing up pro 3D camcorder prototype
A new scoop this weekend has shown Sony developing its own 3D pro camcorder. The EX3 would combine two of its similarly named studio cameras into a single camera that could generate stereoscopic images. Each CMOS sensor can output full-quality 1080p, 4:4:4 video over their own distinct HD-SDI outputs, the Engadget source said, or squeezed 4:2:0 MPEG-2 video to SanDisk- and Sony-made SxS cards.

Apple vermeldet neue Zahlen in Bezug auf den anhaltend guten Absatz der iPads in den USA. Innerhalb der ersten 28 Tage konnten bislang gut eine Million Geräte verkauft werden. Studie: Jeder Datenmissbrauch kostet über eine Million Euro
Das Ponemon Institute hat eine internationale Studie zu den Kosten von Datenmissbrauch durchgeführt. Das Ergebnis: Pro Missbrauchsfall ergaben sich 2009 durchschnittlich Kosten in Höhe von 3,43 Millionen Dollar (rund 2,6 Millionen Euro). Ich hab es also tatsächlich geschafft: ich bin mal wieder seit eineinhalb Jahren wieder auf meiner Lieblingsinsel: Kreta. Und heute ist sogar schon mein zweiter Tag. Gestern musste ich mich erst Mal vom frühen Aufstehen erholen (mein Flieger ging nämlich schon um 5:30!).

Schätzungen zu den Verkaufszahlen des iPad WiFi+3G
Wie Analyst Gene Munster von Piper Jaffray berichtet, wurden am Wochenende ungefähr 300.000 iPad WiFi+3G verkauft. Diese Schätzung beruht auf Stichproben bei mehreren US-amerikanischen Apple Stores, darunter in New York und Minneapolis. Das iPad WiFi+3G hat sich damit am Wochenende so oft verkauft wie das iPad WiFi allein an seinem ersten Verkaufstag. Jailbreak für iPhone, iPod Touch und iPad: "Spirit" steht zum Download bereit
Das bereits für vergangenen Freitag angekündigte Tool "Spirit" hat das iPhone Dev Team am Montag morgen zum Download freigegeben. Wie Blackra1n ist Spirit eine reine Jailbreak-Lösung, die Apples werksseitige Beschränkungen umgeht, um nicht im App Store enthaltene Programme installieren zu können. Mit dem Tool lässt sich aber weder ein Gerät aktivieren noch die Providerbindung aufheben. Daher sollten es Anwender, die kein aktiviertes iPhone oder iPad besitzen, meiden.

Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat Apple am vergangenen Wochenende rund 300.000 Stück des seit Freitag erhältlichen iPad 3G abgesetzt. Das geht aus einer Analyse des Piper-Jaffray-Analysten Gene Munster hervor. Spirit Jailbreak für iPhone, iPod touch und iPad ist da !!!
Endlich ist der neue untethered, also dauerhafte, Jailbreak vom Dev Team offiziell zu haben. Der eigentliche Launch musste verschoben werden. Nun ist “Spirit” da und knackt schon fleißig die Firmware-Versionen 3.1.2, 3.1.3 und 3.2.
Die Einschränkungen sind jedoch, dass es noch keinen Unlock sowie Hacktivation gibt. Auf dem iPad sei die aktuelle Version von Spirit

Apple schließt zum 31. Mai den vor rund fünf Monaten übernommenen Internet-Musikdienst Lala. Das geht aus einer Ankündigung auf der Website des Unternehmens hervor. Demnach werden ab sofort keine neuen Mitglieder mehr aufgenommen. Vorhandene Nutzer können noch bis einschließlich Ende Mai auf alle Funktionen des Diensts zugreifen.

It's hard to say at this point if this new spate of Inspiron machines are just region-specific lappies or totally new breeds of a tried-and-true original, but either way, they're alive and well on Dell's own website. So far as we can tell, the Dell Inspiron 13R, 14R, 15R, 17R and M501R are exactly like their non-R contemporaries save for a few choice options: the GPU assortment is far more robust on the new flavors, while there's a larger quantity of choices in the operating system, RAM and wireless departments. Anhang 62051Mit 'Spirit' veröffentlichte das iPhone Devteam ein neues Jailbreaktool für die iPhone OS Geräte. iPhone, iPod touch und iPad lassen sich damit einem Jailbreak unterziehen, der auch nach Neustart des Gerätes bestehen bleibt. Für den Jailbreak ist ein bereits aktiviertes Gerät mit einer Betriebssystemversion ab 3.1.2 nötig. Ein Unlock der UTMS Geräte zur Verwendung eines anderen Providers ist in Spirit nicht enthalten. Das bereits für vergangenen Freitag angekündigte Tool "Spirit" hat das iPhone Dev Team am Montag morgen zum Download freigegeben. Wie Blackra1n ist Spirit eine reine Jailbreak-Lösung, die Apples werksseitige Beschränkungen umgeht, um nicht im App Store enthaltene Programme installieren zu können. Mit dem Tool lässt sich aber weder ein Gerät aktivieren noch die Providerbindung aufheben. Daher sollten es Anwender, die kein aktiviertes iPhone oder iPad besitzen, meiden.

E-Book Reader auf dem Vormarsch: 28,5 Millionen Geräte bis 2013
Medien und Verlage dürften sich über die von In-Stat gezeichneten Aussichten freuen: Das Unternehmen für Marktanalysen sieht eine Verdreifachung bei den E-Book Reader-Verkaufszahlen. Für dieses Jahr rechnet In-Stat mit 10 Millionen verkaufter Geräte, Ende 2013 sollen es dann 28,5 Millionen sein.

iPad hack enables SMS messages on T-Mobile SIM
The iPhone Dev Team, a group better known for iPhone jailbreaking, has allegedly found a way to send SMS messages from a 3G iPad. The additional functionality reportedly requires raw code, as the feature has yet to be officially enabled on the tablet, according to details listed on a Twitter post. SMS messages are also prohibited from AT&T accounts bundled with the 3G models.

Analyst: 300.000 iPad 3G am ersten Wochenende

Apple estimated to have sold over 300,000 3G iPads
Apple may have sold as many as 300,000 iPads with 3G over the launch weekend, according to an estimate by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The tally would include both 52 days of pre-orders and walk-in sales and has been accompanied by sellouts at many stores. Of 50 Apple stores called on Sunday, all but one had completely run out of the more advanced iPads.

iPhone / iPad 'Spirit' jailbreak released to the world
We've been seeing the iPad / iPhone Spirit jailbreak demoed here and there for a few weeks now, and here we go -- the download is now available. The untethered jailbreak works on activated iPhone OS devices running 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2, although iPad owners are warned that "all this is still sort of beta" and might require you to restore if things break. That's not the worst thing in the world, we suppose -- anyone taking the plunge?

Google today said it had acquired BumpTop. The deal gives Google access to the 3D desktop environment created originally for Macs and Windows PCs. As a result of the move, BumpTop said it will stop selling the Pro version of the app immediately and take down the free version after a week.

I'm getting a new iPad 3G. I understand the bit about no contract and $15 a month for 250mb but wonder about how does 250mb relate to web usage. I have heard some say the web surfing can consume a lot of "bandwidth" but have no idea what that means relative to 250mb of data plan use.
I am not an AT&T fan (still waiting for Verizon or Sprint to get the iPhone) and am always reluctant to sign up for a 2 year contract for anything. My wife has an iPad wireless model and she has had no trouble web surfing, e-mail etc, at the house or our apartment in the city.
I want the option of being further afield from hotspots and our wireless routers. I don
