AT&T plans to get 14.4Mbps 3G to 250m people in 2010
AT&T's John Stankey at a New York City event today surprised the industry by revealing that the carrier's upgrade to HSPA+ will be much larger than expected. It plans to have 14.4Mbps access rolled out far enough on its network to reach 250 million subscribers by the end of 2010. The speed-up should roughly double the 7.2Mbps speeds on offer today and will usually involve just software upgrades for cell sites.

Acer holding global event at end of May, no Chrome OS devices planned to launch
Thinking that early June / Computex will see the launch of Acer's Chrome OS devices? That's what we heard yesterday, but after doing a little digging of our own, our advice is simply, don't hold your breath. A source within Acer has told us that the company has no plans to hold a press conference at the Taipei show, and that a global launch event will be held in New York on May 25. The "significant news" Acer has to share this spring will be revealed then, but it doesn't seem like it'll entail Chrome OS devices either.

A San Mateo judge has unsealed legal documents relating to the ongoing investigation into the loss, purchase, and subsequent publication of details regarding a prototype fourth-generation iPhone. Judge unseals documents in Gizmodo case, finder offered extra $3500 and bonus for lost iPhone
Filed under: AppleAfter multiple requests from media like Wired.com and the Los Angeles Times, a judge has unsealed the search warrant in the Gizmodo case. According to California law, search papers must be made public within 10 days of a search being completed, unless there are extenuating circumstances in the case.
In this one, the prosecutors were arguing that the identities (presumably of the Apple employee who originally lost the iPhone purchased by Gizmodo's editor, as well as the person who found it and sold it to Gizmodo) could be revealed. But that information had already reached the Web -- Gizmodo

AT&T to cover about 250M people with HSPA+ by year's end
AT&T has changed its story on its 3.5G / 3.75G strategy prior to rolling out LTE seemingly countless times in the past couple years, but the good news is that the latest policy shift is a decidedly positive one: it intends to cover about 250 million Americans in speedy (well, hopefully speedy) HSPA+ by the end of 2010. Adobe-Apple war on Flash reminiscent of PostScript struggle

Cherrypal Asia runs Android on the cheap, comes in 7- and 10.1-inch flavors
What do you do if you're CherryPal, and you've already released a $118 netbook named Africa? Uh, you replace it with a $99 netbook named the Asia, of course. Three apps for iPhone that look great on iPad

Universal binaries? These apps don't need no stinking universal binaries! That is, the following three apps are not tuned for iPads. A universal binary will switch to the "iPad version" of the app for that device. So you might have MobileStudio on your iPhone, but it also looks great on the iPad because they wrote code and added graphics to accommodate the larger screen size. But the apps I'll list look great with just the 2x upscaling you can do with any iPhone app (like, say, Apple's own Remote app, which is kinda lame on the iPad).

Hauppage WinTV gets WiFi streaming for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
If we've learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it's that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so -- and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. New Nikon entry DSLR, D90 sequel seen in next few months
Nikon is readying a pair of lower end DSLR cameras in the relatively near future, a pair of rumors have asserted this week. The most credible ones point to an entry model that would slot in between the absolute beginner's D3000 and the more advanced D5000. Judge agrees to unseal iPhone search warrant
An affidavit involved in the search of a Gizmodo editor's home must be unsealed, a San Mateo County judge has ordered in a Friday court hearing. The ruling is a reversal of an earlier one, and stands in conflict with the view of the county district attorney, who today maintained a position that warrant details should be kept quiet. There is no precedent giving the court authority to unseal the warrant, claims DA Chris Feasel.

Motorola Ruth / Flipout leaks again, due in June?

Data use overtakes voice on cellphones
Data use overtook voice on cellphones for the first time, according to CTIA data. Internet access and text messaging occupied more data on US carriers' networks than did the equivalent in calls. The reversal came both through a 50 percent jump in text messaging but also the rise of data-first smartphones like the Droid and iPhone.

Ford, U-M students send socially-connected Fiestas on cross-country roadtrip, aim to become Mayor of the USA
Ford is certainly no stranger to internet-connected cars, but it looks like it's now truly stepped up its game with a little help from some University of Michigan students, who have teamed up to send two Fiestas on a socially-networked, cross-country road trip. The two cars (part of the American Journey 2.0 project) apparently each pack a similar trunk-full of gear -- including both WiMAX and EV-DO modems, and a 2.6 GHz PC with an 80GB SSD hard drive -- and they'll each be testing out a number of different applications developed by Ford and the students. Sony still taking wait-and-see approach to fighting iPad
Sony is still only contemplating the idea of creating a tablet to challenge the iPad, the company's IT products senior VP Mike Abary said this week. Despite Apple selling over 1 million iPads in a month, the executive said Sony was "not convinced" the market was large enough for tablets. He also admitted that Sony had been thinking about a tablet for "years" but hadn't committed to the idea.

Hulu on the iPad? Think app, not portal

Motorola Motoroi getting Android 2.1, bound for UK?
There's no word yet on when the Motorola Motoroi will make it to T-Mobile (in the industry we call that "the T-Motoroiola rumor") but there has definitely been a good deal of chatter concerning this handset. The latest has Pocket-lint confirming a UK release with Moto itself. Offering similarities to Taipei's HSPA-lovin' XT701, users in Ol' Blighty (and the rest of the UK) can look forward to an 8-megapixel camera (with a Xenon flash), support for 720p video, mini HDMI, and an unspecified processor boost. Google gives up on Nexus One online store, moves to retail
Google today signaled a major change in its attitude toward smartphones by dropping its online store for the Nexus One. The company is still keeping its Android flagship but plans to move it to retail stores through carriers and partners, much like it did with Vodafone in April. Online sales will stop once enough Nexus Ones exist in retail, and the site will eventually switch to a showcase for multiple Android phones.

iBookstore risks breaking UK competition laws
Apple may have to change how it treats publishers in order to keep the iBookstore legal in the United Kingdom, a report claims. BT chief denies making iPad rival
UK-based wireless provider British Telecom (BT) has revealed plans to create a portable tablet PC, but chief executive Ian Livingston is playing down allegations that the device will be a competitor to Apple's iPad. The unnamed device was shown off at a demo in London, but specs and other details are not yet known. Livingston says the device is meant for use around the home and not be carried around like an iPad, suggesting it may only have Wi-Fi and lack 3G data access.

Third beta of Mac OS X 10.6.4 targets VoiceOver problems
Apple is now seeding a third beta of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers, build 10F50. The package is a 581.3MB download, although it reportedly makes few changes to the OS. The only new fix is said to be an improvement of VoiceOver compatibility with iMovie and GarageBand. Apple otherwise continues to emphasize testing of issues with SMB, USB, graphics drivers and VPN connections, as well as more specific problems like keyboard and trackpad responsiveness.

News: Maxroam debuts Euro iPad Pack micro SIM
Wireless roaming service provider Maxroam has debuted its new Euro iPad Pack micro SIM card for travelling iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G users. The pack includes a micro SIM preloaded with 50MB of data good for use anywhere in Europe. Once the 50MB cap is reached, users can recharge the card with 10MB of data for €25 or 50MB for €75. Maxroam’s Euro iPad Pack micro SIM is available for pre-order now and will ship June 1 for €75.

First Look: Taska for iPad and iPhone

Erst mal abwarten: Sony glaubt noch nicht so recht an Tablets

Bloomberg berichtet, dass Mika Abary (Senior Vice President der Information Technology Products Unit) Sonys Pläne für ein Tablet zumindest als zögernd beschreibt. Sie beobachten das Segment schon lange, sehen dass Apple eine neue Sparte aufgemacht hat, und freuen sich jetzt beobachten zu können ob das auch funktioniert. Hey kids: Sick of e-readers yet? If not, the kids at trusted reviews just got their hands on what they consider one of the nicest thus far. This 6-inch display-sportin' bad boy has some heft to it -- the reviewers felt that at .66 pounds it might be too much e-reader for some people. Still, it seems well-built and designed for holding for long periods of time. All in all, it's not earth-shattering, as much as "a well thought out refinement" of devices the reviewer has seen before. Privatsphäre: EU kritisiert Facebooks Änderungen
Datenschützer der Europäischen Kommission haben die jüngste Änderung der Privatsphäreeinstellungen auf Facebook gerügt. iPod, iPhone triggering plunge in DS and PSP sales?
Devices like the iPhone and iPod touch may have sparked a collapse in handheld game system sales in April, new NPD data found. The overall US console market's revenue dropped 27 percent last month, but the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP accounted for 61 percent of the overall drop even though they represented just a quarter of all revenue. Nintendo was especially hard-hit as DS sales were cut by more than half versus a year ago to just 440,800.

Skype's group video calling beta now available for Windows

Gast-Erfahrungsbericht: MicroSIM-Kauf bei Swisscom und Orange
Kaum hatte Apple die Preise für das iPad in der Schweiz veröffentlicht, zogen auch schon die Mobiltelefonanbieter nach und kündigten an, dass sie Micro-SIMs und neue Preispläne anbieten werden. Doch wie ist es, wenn man einen dieser Preispläne oder eine Micro-Sim schon heute möchte, wenn man wie der Autor dieses Gast-Artikels bereits ein iPad 3G aus der USA importiert hat? Michael (Blog, Twitter) möchte euch hier von seinen Erfahrungen bei der Swisscom und Orange berichten.
Sechs iPads hatte ich im Gepäck, als ich am Mittwoch aus meinem Kurzurlaub in New York heimkehrte (den Erfahrungsbericht darüber gibt es drüben beim iPhoneBlog.de). In New York liess es sich perfekt über den aktivierten Preisplan von AT&T surfen, doch in der Schweiz würde das per Roaming natürlich sehr teuer werden.

Wir haben zwar jetzt schon mehr als genug Apps auf dem iPhone, aber wie wäre es, wenn man je nach Ort die passenden Apps dabei hätte? Automatisch. Texas company sues Apple over interface designs
Submitting through a court for the Western District of Texas, Austin-based MONKEYmedia has filed a new patent infringement lawsuit against Apple. In particular, Apple is accused of violating three patents related to MONKEYmedia's "Seamless Contraction" interface technology: one for document summary, another for RSS readers, and finally one for video players displaying multiple versions of text or AV content. MONKEYmedia is asking for an injunction, back royalties and other applicable damages and expenses.

Sony Alpha A290 shows up early in Vietnam
Vietnam was home to another early product introduction on Friday as Sony showed a new entry-level Alpha DSLR in the country. Sony's entry-level A290 DSLR smiles for the camera
Sony hasn't seen fit to fully announce the successor to its current entry-level Alpha model, the A230, but Tinhte forum member dt0306 has posted what looks to be conclusive proof of its existence -- not to mention shots at every angle and detailed specs. This re-designed model now packs a 14 megapixel CCD with a BIONZ image processor, along with the same maximum 3200 ISO, 2.7-inch LCD, and 2.5fps maximum shooting speed of the A230. MAXroam outs iPad-friendly micro SIM for Euro travellers
Cubic Telecom's MAXroam label today catered primarily to new iPad owners with a micro SIM card made just for European traveling. The Euro iPad pack supplies a micro SIM card that can supply 50MB of data anywhere in Europe. iNet Pro is a handy network utility for your iPhone
Filed under: App Store, iPadiNet is incredibly handy. I needed a list of the MAC addresses of all of the devices on my network. It's a fairly tedious process that requires a lot of copy and pasting and a lot of poking around in network settings. Then, I remembered I had iNet Pro on my iPhone. I fired it up, ran a scan, and then emailed myself a nicely-formatted report that listed all of the devices.

Apple rejects Wi-Fi Sync from App Store
After some waiting, Apple has formally rejected Wi-Fi Sync from the App Store. The title allows an iPhone or iPod touch to sync files without a USB connection, making the process significantly more convenient. Nvidia steigert Umsatz um 50 Prozent

Zwar kann Base das iPhone nicht subventioniert rausrücken, aber über die Advance Systems GmBH & Co. KG (aka 3Gspeed.de) hat Base jetzt das iPhone auf seine Startseite genommen und bietet allen Kunden an ab 29,79 im Monat (für zwei Jahre) dabei zu sein. Boeing Phantom Ray: Unbemannter Flieger soll dieses Jahr noch starten

Piloten werden immer weniger gefragt, so scheint die Entwicklung, wenn man sich die aktuellen Entwürfe der großen Produzenten anschaut. Der Phantom Ray von Boeing ist solch ein Jet. Ganz ohne Mensch im Cockpit navigiert er sich durch die Lüfte und wurde diese Woche in St.Louis präsentiert. Mit einer Geschwindigkeit von knapp 1000 km/h ist er als Observationsflieger gedacht, kann aber auch Projektile auf böse Typen abfeuern. Zudem ist er so konzipiert, dass weder Radar noch fremde Raketen ihm allzu schnell an den hübschen Lack gehen können. Im Dezember soll er seinen Jungfernflug haben. Steam for Mac: Ein erster Eindruck
Jetzt ist es also endlich da, das von so vielen erwartete Steam für Mac. Valve schaffte es sogar damit in die einige große Newsseiten wie z.B. SPON. Mac-Entwicklerkonferenz C4 beerdigt
Jonathan Rentzsch hat sich entschieden, seine Konferenz C4 für unabhängige Mac-Entwickler einzustellen. Als Grund nennt er Apples Politik geschlossener Systeme – allen voran den neuen Abschnitt 3.1.1 des Lizenzabkommens des iPhone-Entwicklerkits.

Tool erlaubt Wechsel des Grafikmodus ohne Abmeldung
Das MacBook Pro kommt gleich mit doppelter Grafikkraft: Es verfügt sowohl über einen stromsparenden Grafikchip als auch über eine vor Kraft strotzende Grafikkarte. Der einzige Wermutstropfen: Für einen Wechsel zwischen Stromspar- und Leistungsmodus muss sich der Anwender abmelden. Ein kleines Freeware-Tool namens gfxCardStatus ändert dies nun: Es setzt sich in die Menüleiste und erlaubt von dort den wilden Wechsel zwischen den beiden Modi - zu jeder Zeit, ohne Abmeldung. Big in Japan: Das X10 von Sony Ericsson ist Japans bestverkauftes Smartphone überhaupt

Wir wundern uns ein wenig, aber scheinbar hat es Sony Ericsson mit dem X10 geschafft den Japanischen Markt zu knacken, der für Smartphones nicht gerade einfach ist. Zugegeben, japanische Handys selbst zählen dort, selbst wenn sie mehr können, nicht zu den Smartphones. In nur zwanzig Tagen haben sich 100.000 Japaner das X10 geschnappt, und damit alle anderen verdrängt. Vielleicht liegt es am Formfaktor, denn der wirkt auf uns durchaus japanisch. An Android 1.6 dürfte es nicht liegen. Die Konkurrenz ist in Japan aber auch nicht allzu groß, denn nicht allzuviele der hier beliebtesten Smartphones schaffen überhaupt den Weg nach Japan. Das war zu erwarten. Das Wi-Fi Sync App von Greg Hughes, das einem hätte ermöglichen können, endlich auf das Kabel zu verzichten, wenn man mal wieder ein paar Daten updaten will, hat sich nicht an den Aufsehern im Apple App Store vorbeidrängeln können. Die hier vorgestellte, das iPhone um eine tolle Funktion erweiternde, App "WiFi Sync" wurde von Apple abgelehnt. Über die Gründe schweigt Apple sich aus, jedoch vertreibt der Entwickler "WiFi Sync" nun trotzdem. Zu beziehen ist das Programm ab sofort über Cydia für immerhin 9,99 US-Dollar, einem relativ stolzen Preis für eine App, die vielleicht mit OS 4.0 erst einmal nicht mehr nutzbar ist, da der Jailbreak dann fehlt. Für jeden, der sein Kabel jedoch immer vergisst, vielleicht eine echte Alternative.

Wenig überraschend wurde das hier und hier vorgestellte Programm Wi-Fi Sync nicht für den App Store zugelassen. Das Programm zur drahtlosen Synchronisierung zwischen Computer und iPhone bzw. iPod touch wird statt dessen nun zum Preis von 9,99 Dollar über den Jailbreak-Store Cydia vertrieben. Die vietnamesische Technik-Site Taoviet hat Bilder eines weiteren iPhone-4G-Prototypen veröffentlicht. Cisco meldet Gewinnsprung von 40 Prozent im dritten Quartal
Cisco hat im dritten Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2010 (bis 1. Mai) einen Nettogewinn von 2,5 Milliarden Dollar (2 Milliarden Euro) oder 0,42 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. iPhone image metadata hints at more cameras on the next iPhone

Augmented Reality von Praktiker und Ikea
Die Baumarktkette Praktiker bietet eine kostenlose iPhone-App an, die neben Marktfinder und einer Übersicht über die aktuellen Angebote auch die Möglichkeit bietet, sich Gartenmöbel und -häuschen per Augmented Realtity vor dem Kauf im eigenen Garten anzusehen. Can't say we're surprised to hear that Apple rejected Greg Hughes' Wi-Fi Sync app. You know, the app that allows you to wireless sync your iPhone / iPod touch with iTunes without having to USB tether to your computer. Adobe has released a final beta version of its RAW photo processor updated for Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw 6.1. The plug-in allows Photoshop to process and prepare RAW camera captures, which is proprietary image data that bypasses typical in-camera processing to allow advanced photographers to run the processing later under ideal circumstances. Mehr als die Hälfte der rund 25 Millionen deutschen Breitband-Internetzugänge werden mit einem Drahtlos-Netzwerk (WLAN) betrieben, schätzt der Hightech-Verband BITKOM. Ein Funknetz im Haus ist praktisch: "Mehrere Nutzer kommen ohne Kabelsalat bequem und preiswert ins Web - jeder übernimmt einen Teil der Kosten", so BITKOM-Hauptgeschäftsführer Bernhard Rohleder.
Allerdings sollten die Anschluss-Inhaber ihr Funknetz vor Missbrauch schützen. Dazu rät der BITKOM nach einer Entscheidung des Bundesgerichtshofs. Photoshop product manager slams Apple
Amid Adobe's ad campaign critical of Apple policies, Photoshop product manager John Nack has continued the company's tirade. Workers file lawsuit against iPhone contractor
A group of 44 workers are planning to file a lawsuit against Wintek, a Taiwan-based manufacturer that has been involved in iPhone production, according to the analyst firm Stratfor Global Intelligence. An investor note suggests 62 Wintek employees have been hospitalized for poisoning by N-hexane, a chemical allegedly utilized to clean iPhone touchcreens.

Acer to show first Chrome OS devices in early June
Acer will use the Computex show early in June to show some of the first devices running Chrome OS, multiple sources said this evening. The details are vague, but more than one device is expected to show and would probably involve a netbook given Google's hardware requirements. Contacts for VentureBeat didn't know when they would ship, but Google has said Chrome OS wouldn't sit on shipping devices until the second half of the year.

Samsung Moment update to Android 2.1 available at long last?
Sure, it's been leaked already -- but is Moment-gate 2010 finally about to draw to a close? ITC to look into Apple's call for Kodak trade ban
The US International Trade Commission on Thursday agreed to investigate Apple's request for a trade ban on Kodak. The process will determine whether Kodak has violated multiple patents relating to imaging, memory and power, and if successful would ban some of Kodak's cameras from import into the US. Apple's mid-April complaint had singled out several EasyShare C, M and Z cameras, the Zi series pocket camcorders, as well as the PlaySport and Slice.
