Erste kommerzielle Buchtitel im deutschen iBookstore
Der iBookstore füllt sich nun auch mit kommerziellen Titel. Ergänzend zu den bereits vorgestern eingepflegten kostenlosen lizenzfreien Titel füllt Apple die Regale im virtuellen Buchlanden iBookstore nun auch mit aktuellen Buchtiteln. Momentan finden sich diverse Veröffentlichungen von Random House zu Preisen ab 6 Euro aufwärts, es ist davon auszugehen, dass das Angebot in den nächsten Stunden und Tagen kontinuierlich erweitert wird.
Für den Zugriff auf Apples iBookstore ist die Installation der kostenlosen App iBooks erforderlich. Das Programm ist aktuell nur für das iPad erhältlich, eine Version für den iPod touch und das iPhone soll in Kürze folgen. 30 million Windows Phone 7 devices sold by the end 2011? Microsoft says yes
We've got to hand it to Microsoft -- when it sets a goal, it really sets a goal. As you can see in the slide above shown during a ReMix event in Paris yesterday, Microsoft is apparently expecting to sell 30 million Windows Phone 7 devices by the end of 2011, based on IDC projections. To state the obvious, that's pretty ambitious any way you slice it -- especially considering that the first Windows Phone 7 devices are still quite a few months away from hitting the market, giving Microsoft just over a year to reach that mark. Analyst admits wrong, insists MS tools for Apple still due
Analyst Trip Chowdhry tried to recover from a rebuttal of his claims by Microsoft on Thursday by insisting that some of the story of Apple-friendly developer tools was still accurate. He admitted that Microsoft wouldn't be at WWDC but claimed his sources are certain that Microsoft will have developer tools for the iPad, iPhone and Macs.

MeeGo 1.0 demoed on MSI netbook, looks shockingly stupendous (video)
You've already watched pre-release versions of MeeGo fly around on a number of netbooks, but if you're still wondering if it's worth your while to install v1.0 on your own machine, you owe it to yourself to have a look at the video posted after the break. Apple files for trademark on WebKit rendering engine
Apple has filed for a trademark on WebKit, the engine at the heart of Safari, documents show. While an open-source project, Apple is the creator and primary developer of the engine, which handles the critical task of page rendering. The technology has been adapted for use in several other platforms, including Google's Chrome and Android browsers, and HP/Palm's WebOS.

AT&T: 40% of iPhones are used for work
Four out of 10 iPhones on AT&T are being sold to enterprise workers, the carrier's Business Solutions chief Ron Spears said at the Barclays conference today. Apple publishes guide to self-publishing iBookstore titles
Official instructions are now available on how to self-publish books for the iBookstore. Until recently this information was inaccessible to the public, favoring larger publishers with which Apple has formed deals. In order to submit a book, several criteria must be met. These include having an ISBN-13 number and a US tax ID, and uploading only ePub files which have passed EpubCheck 1.0.5.

Erste iPads erreichen Kunden in Deutschland
Bereits heute - einen Tag vor Verkaufsbeginn des iPad in Deutschland - haben manche Apple-Store-Frühbesteller ihre Geräte erhalten. TNT und UPS hatten alle Hände voll zu tun. Brite-View HDelight brings WHDI to laptops and netbooks
We've been following WHDI's story for quite awhile now, and Brite-View looks like it will be one of the first to bring the wireless HD technology to laptops with its HDelight. The setup is pretty self explanatory -- you've got a larger-than-we'd-like box that hooks up to your laptop via HDMI and then a even larger box that attaches to a monitor or HDTV. News: NBC, Time Warner sticking with Flash?
NBC and Time Warner have told Apple that they won’t be converting their online videos to the iPhone- and iPad-friendly H.264 format, according to a New York Post report. Verizon hints at multi-device pricing for LTE
Verizon's wireless division chief Lowell McAdam pointed to a major overhaul of the carrier's data plan strategy by the time its LTE-based 4G network goes live. Instead of charging by the device, the carrier is more likely to charge for a block of data and share it across as many devices as the user owns. BBC updates web-based iPlayer for iPad
In tandem with the arrival of the iPad in the UK, the BBC has updated its iPlayer web app in order to support the device's layout. iPlayer lets British residents stream BBC radio and TV shows after their original broadcasts. HD 101: Overscan and why all TVs do it
The concept of overscan seems particularly difficult for geeks to comprehend -- normal people usually don't care to even understand it -- and some even get down right confrontational when they first learn that all TVs do it. But the fact is that even the latest LCDs and Plasmas don't show all 2 million pixels of a 1080p signal out of the box. Instead about 3 percent of 'em are cropped off the edges (as illustrated by the red line in the image above) and the remaining pixels are scaled to fill in all the pixels of your HDTV. Speculation: Ballmer at WWDC, Bing or Silverlight on iPhone
A questionable rumor has Microsoft's Steve Ballmer making a presentation at Apple's WWDC in roughly two weeks. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry believes the Microsoft CEO is penciled in for seven minutes of time at the keynote and would talk about a new version of Visual Studio 2010 that would produce iPad, iPhone and Mac apps. Debunk: Steve Ballmer not speaking at WWDC
There have been insane rumors flying since last night that Steve Ballmer would be appearing at WWDC to announce everything from Visual Studio iPhone development to a Bing partnership to Silverlight for the iPhone, and turns out they were just as insane and untrue as you'd expect. Microsoft's official Twitter account just clamped down on the speculation, saying that Ballmer isn't speaking at WWDC, or appearing on Dancing with the Stars. Foxconn may raise wages, denies suicides as impetus
A spokesperson for Hon Hai Precision Industry, otherwise known by the Foxconn trade name, says the company is considering increasing wages for its laborers. This is not due to the recent employee suicides, however, the spokesperson said in a Thursday report. NBC, Time Warner refusing to move to HTML5?

Jobs: 'I respect and admire Adobe'
There is no animosity towards Adobe, claims Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The statement comes in response to an e-mail, which asked if the executive hates Adobe and its products, or simply their approach to Flash. "I respect and admire Adobe," says Jobs. "We just chose to not have Flash on our devices." Ballmer downplays Microsoft's shift in market value, says it's a 'long game'
Nothing too shocking here, but Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has made his first public comments on his company's recent slippage in market cap, and he's unsurprisingly downplaying the numbers. Es gibt neue Facebook-Privacy Settings. Normalerweise wäre das hier keine Erwähnung wert, da aber nahezu jeder den wir kennen genau da ständig rumhängt kommen wir einfach nicht daran vorbei. Die Kurzmeldung: alles wird einfacher. Die längere Nachricht: es bleibt fast alles beim alten. Die ganz lange: es bleibt verdammt kompliziert. Man kann zwar jetzt aus allen Applikationen (Facebook Platform) auf ein Mal aussteigen, dann aber bleibt von den Applikationen die man mochte nicht mehr viel, und gerade die so einzustellen, dass man möglichst wenig, aber dennoch genug Zugriff gewährt, ist wirklich kompliziert geblieben. Early UK iPad shipments trigger 'over 100,000' complaints
Reported early iPad deliveries in the UK are causing major headaches, according to anecdotes, and information from the responsible parcel service, TNT. The iPad is officially set to arrive in the UK on May 28th, and many people are thought to have rearranged their schedules to accept a Friday delivery. Wired mag on iPad pushes 24,000 downloads in one day
Wired today set a possible benchmark for e-reading after its New York Bureau Chief John Abell revealed that over 24,000 copies of the iPad magazine were sold in just the first 24 hours. The number is a rarity for digital magazines and would have made the Conde Nast magazine $83,832 in one day after Apple collected its royalties. iPad Surf-Tipps: Quix und Lesezeichen
Ist das iPad erst mal ausgepackt und Einsatz- bzw. Surf-bereit bieten sich zwei schnelle Safari-Modifikationen an, die den Web-Aufenthalt einen Hauch funktionaler gestalten. So erlaubt auch Apples Tablet die Nutzung der Lesezeichen-Leiste, blendet diese jedoch erst ein, sobald entsprechende Bookmarks auf dem iPad abgelegt worden sind. Um die Lesezeichen-Leiste zu aktivieren, reicht es aus, das iPad mit den Lesezeichen der Desktop-Version Safaris zu synchronisieren. Doch auch direkt auf dem iPad kann die Lesezeichen-Leiste eingeblendet werden. Hierfür muss nur mindestens ein Lesezeichen in der Leiste abgelegt werden.

Apple reverses stance on Republican campaign app
Apple has flipped its stance and decided to approve an iPhone app for a Republican Congressional candidate, says the New York Times. The app, created for Ari David, was initially rejected for being defamatory of the incumbent, Democrat Henry Waxman. The app makes many attacks against Waxman, for instance suggesting that he "tried to strangle family farms with insane Soviet-style regulation."

Motorola chief wary on tablets, sees new Droid beating HTC
Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha at a Barclays conference today discussed the possibility of a tablet but quickly set boundaries around what he would do. He and his company believe a 7- to 10-inch tablet would work as a companion device around the home, such as for watching TV, but are hesitant about doing a device with a full operating system, like the iPad. Jha said he wasn't "comfortable" with Android on a larger screen than a phone's.

DoJ making preliminary inquiries into Apple's music endeavors while iTunes dominance continues
It's all just noise right now, but the United States Justice Department is purportedly having a "very preliminary conversation" with Apple regarding the company's music business, wondering in particular if anything it's doing (or has done) would violate antitrust legislation. Die heute veröffentlichte Studie des Statistikportals Statista zur Markteinführung des Apple iPad prognostiziert für Deutschland einen iPad-Absatz von 500.000 Geräten in 2010. MeeGo 1.0: Jetzt für Netbooks, erst im Oktober für Tablets

Die gute Nachricht zuerst: Ab sofort gibt es das Nokia/Intel Betriebssystem MeeGo auf Linux Basis zum runterladen. Zunächst allerdings erst mal für Netbooks. Ihr erinnert euch, das waren diese Dinger die sich vor dem iPad wie geschnitten Brot verkauft haben. Im Juni soll dann die Software für "Handsets" folgen, und erst im Oktober die für Tablets.

iPhone-Schwachstelle: Zugriff ohne PIN unter Ubuntu möglich
Sicherheitsspezialist Bernd Marienfeldt hat eine Schwachstelle der iPhone-Verschlüsselung aufgedeckt. Eigentlich sollte das iPhone 3GS hardwareseitig mit 256-bit AES verschlüsselt sein. Doch Marienfeldt entdeckte zufällig, dass der Automounter unter Ubuntu den Zugriff auf das iPhone-Dateisystem ermöglicht – ohne irgendwelche Hacks.

Palm's UI designer jumps to Google for Android
Palm may have been dealt a significant wound this morning as its key user interface designer Matias Duarte said this morning that he was leaving the company. The Senior Director of Human Interface and User Experience didn't say where he would go next, but sources for AllThingsD said he was leaving to join Google and develop the Android interface. Greenpeace entert Dell-Zentrale
Greenpeace-Aktivisten haben das Hauptquartier des Computerherstellers Dell im texanischen Austin bestiegen und an der Fassade ein Spruchband mit der Aufschrift "Michael, what the Dell? European iPads shipping to homes early
iPads are already being delivered to homes in Europe, incoming anecdotes appear to confirm. One UK reader tells MacNN that they had a 64GB iPad 3G delivered at approximately 8AM Thursday morning. Scattered accounts have in fact pointed to iPads arriving since earlier this week, including in Italy, where at least one person says they had a 32GB iPad 3G delivered, in this case via UPS. The earliest reports of iPads showing up in Europe date back to the 20th, though the unit may have been store stock or a gift.

Matias Duarte leaves Palm... and could be headed to Google
According to a report filed over at All Things D, Matias Duarte -- the man considered to be the driving force behind the user interface of webOS -- has left Palm, and may very well be headed to Google. Duarte held the title of Senior Director of Human Interface and User Experience, and before working his magic at Palm, was one of the hands that touched the Sidekick and Helio UIs. Although Palm has confirmed his departure from the company, they aren't giving up the goods on where he's headed next, though John Paczkowski over at D says "multiple sources" indicate he's on his way to Google, presumably to work on Android.

Apple market share climbs to 6.8% in Europe

Hardmac is reporting that Apple's market share in Europe has risen to 6.8%. That's not quite as high as the around 10% share for computers in the US, but it is a full two percentage points higher than it was last year. XO-3 tablet to launch two years early with fewer features
The One Laptop Per Child project team today said it was stepping up the schedule for its XO-3 tablet. The touchscreen, sub-$100 tablet is now due to have first appearance at CES 2011, two years ahead of schedule, but will shed some of its original ambitions to get to that point. It should instead be based on Marvell's Moby platform and use a 1GHz ARM processor; the design won't use an all-plastic, waterproof shell and should be thicker than the quarter inch set out earlier as a target.

Electric Daihatsu Mira goes 623 miles on a charge, but not to a showroom near you
Want an electric vehicle with more than a piddly couple-hundred mile range? Apparently you have to build it yourself and follow in the footsteps of the Japan Electric Vehicle Club, which broke the Guinness World Record last weekend by driving 623.76 miles (just over 1,000km) on a single charge in its customized Daihatsu Mira. The trip took 27.5 hours traveling around what appears to be the famous Tsukuba circuit in Shimotsuma, Japan. Acer shows 7-inch Android tablet, e-readers and 720p phone
Acer used a broad product launch today to reveal a surprise entry into the tablet arena. CEO Gianfranco Lanci briefly demonstrated a 7-inch tablet running Android and with a hardware keyboard underneath. Erste 3D-Inhalte auf Swisscom TV
Wie die Swisscom heute mitteilt, wird Swisscom TV ab sofort auch 3D-Material liefern: «Swisscom TV plus-Kunden, die über einen 3D-Fernseher verfügen, empfangen 3D-Übertragungen ohne zusätzliche Kosten.» Zudem soll ab dem 1. Juni das HD-Senderangebot weiter ausgebaut werden. Erste Sender wie Servus TV oder Anixe HD bieten einzelne, ausgewählte Events und Inhalte in 3D. Eine spezielle Swisscom TV-Box für Swisscom TV plus-Kunden ist für den Empfang der 3D-Inhalte nicht nötig. Auch sollen keine Mehrkosten entstehen. Voraussetzung ist aber natürlich ein 3D-ready Fernseher und HD-Empfang.
Wie erwähnt erweitert die Swisscom das Angebot auch bei den Sendern in hochauflösender Qualität. Per 1. Juni bietet Swisscom mit dem neuen englischsprachigen Sender ITV HD insgesamt acht HD-Sender. NetApp meldet Rekordumsatz im vierten Geschäftsquartal
NetApp hat sein drittes Finanzquartal 2010 (bis 29. Januar 2009) mit einem Rekordgewinn von 108 Millionen Dollar oder 0,30 Dollar je Aktie beendet. Erste iPad-Zustellungen erreichen ihre Vorbesteller
München, Berlin, Frankfurt und Bremen: In vielen Teilen der Republik bekommen iPad-Vorbesteller bereits heute ihre Apple-Lieferungen zugestellt. Der bekannte PDF-Reader der Zeitschrift "Der Spiegel" ist nun auch für das iPad verfügbar. Für 3,99 Euro ab der zweiten Ausgabe kommt die Zeitschrift auf den Tablet PC. Die Preisgestaltung begründet Spiegel damit, dass Apple den Kioskpreis, nämlich 3,60 Euro, nicht anbietet und die nächste Möglichkeit mit 2,99 Euro zu niedrig wäre. Wer dennoch unter den Kioskpreis kommen möchte, dem bleibt nur das Abo, welches nach elf Ausgaben bei 2,64 Euro pro PDF auskommt. Schweiz: TNT liefert heute über 4000 iPads aus
Wie uns die Hotline von TNT/SwissPost gegen Anfrage bestätigte, sollen heute in der Schweiz über 4000 iPads ausgeliefert werden. Wieviele Geräte bereits gestern oder morgen und noch in den nächsten Tagen ausgeliefert werden, konnte uns nicht mitgeteilt werden. Es dürften sich zudem bereits einige hundert aus den USA importierte Geräte in der Schweiz befinden, wodurch wohl bereits vor der offiziellen Marktlancierung des iPads am morgigen Freitag deutlich über 5000 iPads in der Schweiz im Umlauf sind.

Langsam haben wir wirklich genug gehört zum neuen iPhone, am 7. Juni wissen wir endlich mehr. Einen haben wir allerdings noch. Digitmes berichtet, dass Apple ein zweites neues iPhone in der Hinterhand hat, Codename N91. Das entspricht von Design her ziemlich genau dem aktuellen Modell 3G S. Firefox Home set to sync desktop browser data with an iPhone
Firefox has announced that it will soon launch a new iPhone app, Firefox Home. The utility is not based on the Firefox engine, but rather the company's Firefox Sync system. Users will be able to access their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks, and the group of tabs from their most recent browsing session. The app will also integrate the "Awesome Bar" for quick access to sites with minimal typing.

FCC offers 'simple' 'tips' for avoiding pesky early termination fees
The government is just about the last place we'd look for helpful pointers on much of anything, much less when shopping for a new phone -- but that didn't stop the FCC's Consumer Task Force from whipping up a PDF of things you can to do prevent yourself from getting burned with a multi-hundred dollar early termination fee when buying the handset of your wildest dreams. Fox Mobile launches Bitbop beta, a Hulu for your phone
While Hulu might be missing out on the mobile space due to licensing issues, Fox Mobile-backed Bitbop is looking to step in and take the reins. The app, currently in beta and available only for select BlackBerry devices, has 25 content partners including Fox (of course), CBS, NBC, and Comedy Central. Analyst: PC shipments expected to grow 22% in 2010

When will the music industry finally give in to iTunes?
(Editorial) A new NPD report was released this week, and to no one's surprise, Apple has increased its market share. According to the market-research firm, 28 percent of all music is being purchased on iTunes. Apple's store easily bested Amazon's MP3 marketplace, which accounted for 12 percent of all US music sales. Walmart also captured 12 percent of the market. Out of the entire digital-music market, NPD claims, Apple controls a whopping 70 percent.

Report: 30% of netbook shoppers bought an iPad

Project Natal to cost $149 by itself, $299 with 360 Arcade, according to latest rumors

Edge has it on good authority that Microsoft's midlife rejuvenator for the Xbox 360, Project Natal, will cost a cool 149 bucks when purchased as a standalone accessory, or $100 when bundled together with the $199 Xbox 360 Arcade console. MeeGo 1.0 for netbooks and N900 now available to download

PTPT shows off wild Android UI skin, we go hands-on

Verizon would sell double the Incredibles without shortage
Verizon Wireless chief Lowell McAdam at a Barclays conference today said that his company would be selling "twice the number" of Droid Incredible phones if not for a chronic parts shortage. He blamed Samsung for a shortfall in the 3.7-inch AMOLED displays that are used for both the Incredible as well as other HTC flagships like the Desire and Nexus One. Samsung was ramping up production but wouldn't keep up with Verizon's demand for another 30 to 60 days, McAdam said.
