Comcast drops hints of 105Mbps Extreme tier
Comcast's plans to offer over 100Mbps on its cable Internet access were given away today after one customer posted mention of a new tier on his bill. The appropriately named Extreme 105 would provide 105Mbps downstream and 10Mbps for uploads. It would require a special Arris WBM760 cable modem to get the faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds.

Four more major laptop manufacturers will use NVIDIA Optimus by the fall
It's no secret that we've been big fans of NVIDIA's automatic graphics switching Optimus technology, but we've had one major complaint -- there's just not enough systems with it on the market. While ASUS has been employing the technology in most of its new systems, others, like Lenovo and HP, have been quite tight-lipped on the GPU tech. But apparently that's about to change. Safari extensions to be announced at WWDC?
Apple may be preparing to update Safari with extension support, Daring Fireball's John Gruber hints. "The other big thing that's missing (compared to both Chrome and Firefox) is a proper extension API," says the writer. "If only Apple had an imminent developer conference where they could unveil such a thing." While such a statement would normally be considered speculation, Gruber often phrases inside information in an insinuating manner. Apple's WWDC 2010 event is scheduled to start June 7th.

iPad ab Freitag in deutschen Stores erhältlich
Am kommenden Freitag, dem 28. Mai, startet der iPad-Verkauf nun endlich auch in Deutschland. Wie Apple bekannt gab, wird es ab 8 Uhr morgens in den Apple Retail Stores erhältlich sein. Bei welchen “ausgewählten Premium Resellers” es darüber hinaus noch zu haben ist, bleibt weiter unklar. Unbestätigten Berichten zugfolge soll es das iPad unter anderem auch bei Gravis und m-store geben, allerdings ist nicht bekannt, in welchen Filialen.

E-Ink Shocker! Amazon CEO says color Kindle is 'still a long way out'
Well, if it isn't a surprise to end all surprises. Amazon's head honcho Jeff Bezos recently grabbed a mic at the outfit's annual shareholder meeting in Seattle, and when speaking about the "millions" of Kindle e-readers that he's sold, he pointed out the obvious when questioned about the possibility of a color version. Marvell shows off 10-inch Android tablet at Netbook Summit
Unfortunately, we don't know much about this new Marvell powered tablet, but we couldn't resist sharing our impressions of the very svelte 10-inch device. We only got a few minutes to play around with the slate at the Netbook Summit, but we can tell you that it has a brushed metal back and there's an opening on the front for a camera. Intel axes Larrabee graphics after setbacks
Intel today quietly said it was canceling its Larrabee dedicated graphics. The company acknowledged that it had missed key steps on the way to completing the many-core graphics technology and that it wouldn't arrive with a competing product on time. Intel's focus from now on would be on the integrated graphics such as those it uses in newer Core i3, i5 and i7 chips.

EU-Abgeordnete erhalten iPad zu Dienstzwecken
Nebst Dienst-iPhone folgt nun auch das Dienst-iPad. Dies berichtet die Englische Times unter Berufung einer Quelle im Europäischen Parlament. Satte fünf Millionen Euro sollen für das IT Mobility Project bereits fest verplant sein. Die Idee entstammt der Feder von Klaus Welle, einem überzeugten Apple-Jünger inmitten der Parlamentarier. Zwar bekamen die Politiker vor kurzer Zeit erst alle einen Dienstlaptop der Marke HP, jedoch würden nur wenige diese PCs ständig mit sich führen, so die Quelle. AViiQ ships ultra-thin notebook stand
AViiQ is now shipping the thinnest laptop stand available, the Portable Laptop Stand. iPad production could hit up to 2.5 million per month
Apple is currently producing about 1 to 1.5 million iPads per month, with the potential to make far more, says Sterne Agee's Vijay Rakesh. The information is said to come from checks with the company's supply chain, which hint that by some point in the September quarter, Apple could escalate production to approximately 2.5 million units a month. Earlier manufacturing problems that have caused wide supply shortages have been fixed, says Rakesh, though memory is believed to be a "constraint."

U-Socket makes u-wait until October

FastMac's U-Socket caught the attention of showgoers with a perfect gimmick: a pair of USB charging ports alongside the 15-amp standard AC receptacles. EA Mobile: iPad is a "destination device"

That said, we are getting close to Computex, so we've been expecting to hear from a few old friends over the next week or so. Harmonix teases keyboards for Rock Band 3
Harmonix hasn't been dishing out a ton of Rock Band 3 details lately apart from confirming that it'll be out this holiday season, but it just revealed a big one in the demo for Green Day: Rock Band. If that not so subtle teaser above is any indication, it looks like Rock Band 3 will be adding keyboards to the equation. Nothing more to go on than that at the moment, but we can only assume this also means that Activision will soon be hard at work on Keytar Hero, and that "Axel F" will be stuck in your head starting right. now.

Amazon says Kindle won't chase iPad, focused on reading
Amazon won't try to copy the iPad with future versions of the Kindle, CEO Jeff Bezos said in an annual shareholders' meeting today. He stressed that the Kindle would emphasize e-reading and likened its role to that of a dedicated camera versus a phone camera. Just as a phone is multi-purpose but won't be the best camera, an iPad won't necessarily be the best reader, Bezos said.

Chrome for Mac out of beta

Best Buy to include TiVo's software -- but no DVR -- in Insignia HDTVs
Looks like TiVo wasn't kidding about expanding beyond DVRs, now that its Best Buy partnership will result in integrating non-DVR TiVo software in Insignia-branded HDTVs. Apple has signed an agreement with DSGi to sell the iPad in the U.K. at 139 Currys, PC World, and Dixons Travel outlet shops from launch, 60 days before rivals Comet, Tesco, John Lewis, and the Carphone Warehouse. Analyst: Up to 6 million could flee AT&T for Verizon iPhone
AT&T could lose up to 6 million iPhone subscribers, or 40 percent, if Verizon becomes an iPhone carrier in the near future, says Davenport & Company analyst Drake Johnstone. "Over the past several years, AT&T indicated that 40 percent of its new iPhone customers came from other carriers," the analyst notes. Since AT&T has roughly 15 million iPhone subscribers at present, the 6 million figure emerges as a known quantity of people who have another carrier as an option.

Ooma's latest is its Bluetooth Adapter that lets Ooma Telo Premier subscribers make their cellphone calls using VOIP. Once set up ith a Bluetooth-capable phone, incoming calls can be answered by Ooma Telo handsets when users are in their homes. Wie Safari setzt Google auf Webkit als Renderengine, durch die V8-Javascript Engine verspricht Google jedoch schneller als der Apple Browser zu sein. Google posts stable Chrome browser for Linux, Mac
Google today released its first finished, stable version of Chrome 5 for Linux and the Mac with many of the improvements from the beta. These and the Windows version should now be even faster in JavaScript, up to 35 percent, and gets not only bookmark sync but preferences as well. When signed in, the browser can transfer content settings, filters, themes and other details, even across different operating systems.

Froyo jetzt schon auf Droid / Milestone?

Wir wissen ja, dass Froyo demnächst aufs Droid / Milestone kommen soll, nun sind aber im Forum von My Droid World die ersten Screenshots aufgetaucht, die Froyo auf dem Droid zeigen sollen. Mit dabei sind Screens vom App Launcher, der Kamera, neuer Suchfunktionen und einigem mehr, allerdings fehlt der Screenshot, der das Phone eindeutig identifiziert, nämlich der About Screen. Acer 'Liquid Stream' S110 scores FCC approval: Android, 720p video recording

tChess Pro for iPad is very, very good
Filed under: iPadI love to play chess and was looking for something that worked well on the iPad. The large screen and crisp graphics make board games on the iPad an attractive proposition.
Based on some reviews, I installed tChess Pro for US $7.99. I wasn't disappointed. While you can use the app to let two people play, I was more interested in playing against the computer. tChess Pro is a very strong opponent, but you can modify the levels that the game plays. It was the first time in a computer based chess game that I felt like I was playing a human, although at most levels except the lowest, I was getting clobbered.

Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed executive departures with not one but two exists. Xbox pioneer and Courier design lead J Allard is leaving his position as a senior VP but will stay onboard as an advisor reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer. Robbie Bach, the head of the Entertainment and Devices Group, is also leaving the company after 22 years.

Yankee Stadium bans iPads from premises
Officials at Yankee Stadium in New York City are now preventing people from carrying iPads into Yankees games, the Associated Press writes. The policy is an extension of one affecting notebooks, and MLB Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman claims it was put in place to prevent people from becoming "distracted and getting hit in the face with a ball." Genius Bar workers gather for class action suit over breaks
Some former Apple Store workers are now being contacted by lawyers as part of a class action lawsuit, reports say. The case, Steve Camuti v. Apple, was first filed in the San Francisco County Superior Court in September 2009, and alleges that Geniuses at California retail stores have been forced to work through breaks without the extra pay they should be receiving. Lawyers are seeking unpaid wages going back to September 2005, along with appropriate penalties and expenses, and an injunction on further misconduct.

Phase One buys Expression Media from Microsoft
In a rare example of an acquisition from Microsoft, Phase One today said it had bought the rights to Expression Media. The app gives Phase One's medium format cameras a ready-made photo management and tagging tool for both the Mac and Windows PCs. Nokia hat ein OS-Update für seinen Smartphone-Klassiker N900 angekündigt und in diesem Zug nebenbei dem zusammen mit Intel entwickelten System MeeGo einen empfindlichen Dämpfer verpasst: Aufs N900 kommt nämlich offiziell nur Meamo5, während MeeGo sich auf anderen Geräten tummeln darf, wenn es denn einmal wirklich fertig werden sollte. Die OS-Version 1.2 (V10.2010.19-1) fürs N900 ist seit heute in UK zu haben, ab morgen dann auch im Rest der Welt. UK iPad launch details appear; Canadian iPads ship
The iPad will be available from UK Apple Stores at the early hour of 8AM on Friday, Apple has announced. The timing is notable, as rumors suggested that the company would simply open shops at normal hours for the region's iPad launch. Apple confirmed rumors today by taking away the option to buy an iPhone 3G at the online Apple Store. Although the phone is still listed, the "select" option has vanished and leaves just the iPhone 3GS as the only option for an online order. NVIDIA today started off its GeForce 400M notebook graphics line by launching the series' highest-end model. The GeForce GTX 480M has almost three times as many shader (effects) cores as the 285M it replaces at 352 and carries the hardware tessellation, cache and other changes that make it a generational leap. Tech-Weblog Engadget informierte am heutigen Morgen über Dreharbeiten zu einem angeblich neuen Werbespot der nächsten iPhone-Generation. Dafür verantwortlich soll sich Regisseur Sam Mendes zeigen, der ‘kleinere’ Hollywood-Projekte wie American Beauty in seinen Lebenslauf schreiben kann.
Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte soll ein Videochat zwischen Mutter und Tochter stehen. Auslöser der Nachricht war unter anderem ein Tweet von der Twitter-Benutzerin “ViFlaten“. Engadget anonymisierte zwar den Twitter-Benutzernamen, überließ dem Internet jedoch die Recherche anhand des Profilbildes.

Notebook shipments jump 43% in early 2010 as netbooks slow
Notebook shipments surged a massive 43 percent in the first three months of 2010, Gartner found today. About 49.4 million portables shipped and were lead by HP, which pushed almost 9.5 million notebooks and held 19.2 percent of the market. Acer and ASUS profited from their experiences in netbooks and were the fastest growers at 48.4 percent year-over-year (to 9.1 million) and 113 percent (to 4.3 million) respectively.

Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Dell makes Streak tablet official in UK
Dell today finally pledged itself to a launch for the Streak. Air Display: Mac-Bildschirm auf dem iPad
Gerade im AppStore gelandet, verspricht die 7,99 teure Applikation Air Display (AppStore-Link) die Display-Ausgabe des eigenen Macs auch auf das iPad zu erweitern. Ist die kostenlose Helfer-Anwendung auf eurem Mac installiert, erscheint das eigene iPad als zweiter Monitor und lässt sich dann mit ausgewählten Anwendungen (wie zum Beispiel dem iTunes-Miniplayer oder dem Rechner) befüllen. Neben der Darstellung der Display-Ausgabe lässt sich das iPad auch als Eingabegerät nutzen. Touch-Befehle werden vom Mac verarbeitet und können so den Taschenrechner und andere, auf einen Mausklick angewiesene Anwendungen fernsteuern.

Kultserie "Lost" in der Virenfalle
Hacker nutzen den Ausstrahlungstermin der letzten Folge der amerikanischen Serie "Lost" als Köder, um durch Suchmaschinen Malware in Form des falschen Antivirus MySecurityEngine zu verbreiten. Auch andere Serien, Filme oder der Tod des Rocksängers Ronnie James Dio werden zum Anlass genommen, um falsche Antiviren-Programme in Umlauf zu bringen.
Sobald ein User im Internet nach Informationen zur Serie "Lost" sucht - etwa nach neuesten Meldungen zur finalen Folge oder nach Möglichkeiten, die Folge kostenlos anzusehen - tauchen gefälschte Webseiten auf. Canon verabschiedet sich nach 11 Jahren Entwicklung von Fernsehern mit SED-Technik

SED? War nochmal? Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands? Schweizerischer Erdbebendienst? Ja, auch, aber wir meinen natürlich "Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display", die Bildschirmtechnik mit besonders scharfen Bildern und sympathisch niedrigem Energieverbrauch. Leider hat Canon jetzt nach 11 Jahren Entwicklungsarbeit seine Pläne für SED-Fernseher beerdigt, weil man die Produktionskosten einfach nicht genug herunterschrauben konnte. Ganz tot sind SEDs damit aber noch nicht, denn Canon will die Technik immer noch in ohnehin teuren Spezialprodukten wie etwa medizinischen Geräten einbauen.

Color us highly skeptical of the backstory, but Gizmodo claims to have received a picture of Motorola's rumored 4.3-inch Droid Shadow. Kurz vor dem Verkaufsstart hierzulande füllt sich der App Store kontinuierlich auch mit speziell deutschen Inhalten für das iPad. Neben Apples E-Book-Reader iBooks sind seit heute auch digitale Ausgaben der Tageszeitung "Die Welt" sowie des Wirtschaftsmagazins "brand eins" zum Download verfügbar.
Sehr gut gefällt uns die iPad-App von "brand eins". Zum Austesten erhält man mit dem kostenlosen Download die komplette April-Ausgabe des abwechslungsreichen Wirtschaftsmagazins. Über ein zentrales Inhaltsverzeichnis lassen sich die einzelnen Artikel direkt ansteuern und entweder im Layoutmodus seitenweise durchblättern oder im sogenannten Lesemodus als reinen Text anzeigen. Aigner: Street View startet in Deutschland voraussichtlich erst 2011

Drei Tage vor dem Deutschlandstart des iPads erreicht die Apple-Anwendung iBooks (kostenlos; App Store-Link) den App Store. Audi A8 wird ab 2011 optional mit WLAN-Hotspot ausgeliefert

Nachdem Audi bereits Google Earth in die Konsole des A8 integriert hat, soll das Vehikel ab 2011 auf Wunsch auch mit eigenem WLAN geliefert werden. Dabei kann man entweder eine SIM-Karte ins Amaturenbrett schieben oder aber ein UMTS-Handy via Bluetooth als Modem fürs Auto-WLAN einspannen. Warum dann nicht gleich via Tethering? Haben wir uns auch erst gefragt, aber das Auto-WLAN hat wohl defintiv die bessere Antenne und zwar auf dem Dach, womit der Empfang deutlich besser sein sollte als am Smartphone auf der Rückbank.

Nero klagt gegen Patentverwalter MPEG-LA
Die Nero AG hat laut Medienberichten vor einem kalifornischen Gericht eine Klage (PDF) gegen die MPEG-LA eingereicht. Steve Jobs eröffnet WWDC am 7. Juni (Keynote)
Wie erwartet wird Steve Jobs die Worldwide Developers Conference (kurz WWDC) in San Francisco am Montag in zwei Wochen mit einer Keynote eröffnen, dies hat Apple gestern mittels einer Pressemitteilung bestätigt. Die Keynote findet am 7. Juni um 10 Uhr Ortszeit (20 Uhr CEST), natürlich werden wir mit unserem LiveTicker direkt von den Neuigkeiten dieser Keynote berichten. Die diesjährige WWDC war in einer Rekordzeit von nur acht Tagen ausverkauft (5’000 registrierten Entwickler).
Erwartet wird die vierte Generation des iPhones, ebenfalls dürften neue Funktionen und ein finales Lancierungsdatum nicht nur für das neue iPhone, aber auch für die neue iPhone-OS-Version 4.0 bekannt gegeben werden. Mit ersten Details zu Mac OS X 10.7 darf wohl eher weniger gerechnet werden.

Wie Engadget unter Berufung auf diverse Quellen berichtet, beginnt Apple gerade mit der Produktion neuer Werbespots für das kommende iPhone vierter Generation. Walmart senkt iPhone 3GS Preise
Anhang 62885Als das iPhone 3GS sich ankündigte, senkten Anbieter des 3G die Gerätepreise. Dies wiederholt sich jetzt mit dem 3GS. Walmart senkte jetzt den Preis des 3GS (mit Vertrag) auf unter 100 US-Dollar. Das fast zwei Jahre alte iPhone 3G wurde von Walmart aus dem Programm genommen. Es kann also angenommen werden, dass nach dem Verkaufsstart des kommenden vierten iPhones das aktuelle 3GS weiterhin verkauft werden wird, wie es schon beim Wechsel vom 3G auf 3GS geschehen ist.

We've never been comfortable with the fact that Viliv's many fun and fashionable PMPs have yet to gain a real foothold in the states. Maybe this will change with the Prime P3 media player. As near as we can tell (our Korean is a little rusty) this bad boy sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, has both Android 2.1 and Windows CE 6.0 partitions, and supports 720p video. PLX USB Duet: your netbook is now a cumbersome iPad keyboard
We preface this post by saying we don't know how practical this really is, but PLX's idea of using a netbook's keyboard to type on the iPad is definitely an intriguing one. How does it all work? Well, it relies on the company's USB Duet technology, but the setup isn't exactly what we'd call streamlined. You'll need a netbook like the Fujitsu MH380 or NEC LaVie Light with the built-in PLX chipset / mini-USB port, an iPad with the camera connection kit, and of course the applicable USB Duet software. An unusual slip Monday evening suggests that Apple will take a very different approach when it markets the next iPhone on TV. American Beauty director Sam Mendes is believed to be directing multiple ads, one of which has a mother and a daughter using the iPhone's front camera for a video chat with each other. So the good news is that a class action lawsuit out in Cali is on the cusp of coming to a resolution, and the resolution will require AT&T to provide an unlock code for just about any phone it has sold since March 12, 1999 -- in other words, you'll be able to take the phone and use it on any GSM carrier of your choice. Walmart cuts iPhone 3GS to $97 ahead of new model
Walmart tonight said it would slash the price of a 16GB iPhone 3GS to $97 as of Tuesday. The price is less than half the $197 the retailer asks today and comes just two weeks before WWDC, when Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone. Well, this is intriguing: Walmart just officially announced that it'll be selling the iPhone 3GS for $97 starting Tuesday, a full $100 off the regular price. US government hopes to rework telecom laws
House Energy and Commerce Committee chair Henry Waxman and Senate Commerce Committee chair John Rockefeller today said they would start debating proposals next month that could reform US telecom law. PlayStation tattoo gun mod gets inmate a stern rebuke, admiration from his cell block
When an inmate at Brook House Immigration Removal Centre near Gatwick, West Sussex, England, needed access to a tattoo gun (presumably banned in UK lockups, just as they are in the US) inspiration struck. According to The Sun, the inmate used the motor of a PlayStation's optical drive to move a sharpened ball-point pen. Sure, there are better ways to get ink -- such as waiting to be released -- but it ain't exactly a prison tattoo if you don't get it in prison. The paper goes on to say that from time to time a similar contraption made from "Nintendo consoles" turns up stateside, although the only such device we've ever seen was in an episode of The Wire, and it was made from an old cassette player. Either way, this is one mod we surely won't see from Ben Heck any time soon.

NVIDIA hints webOS tablet, rags on Apple and Intel
Outspoken NVIDIA chief Jen-Hsun Huang hinted in an interview today that a Tegra processor might power a webOS tablet. The executive called Palm's OS "fabulous" and strongly implied it was next for Tegra support after the recent addition of Android. He wouldn't commit to any official plans on the record with Laptop but said the only issue on phones like the Pre was the slow processor, which a multi-core Tegra would fix.

iTunes share of the US music market swells to 26.7%
Filed under: iTunesApple's iTunes music service has strengthened its lead in the US music market, growing to a whopping 26.7% of all music sold in the States, up from 21% a few years ago and 12% in 2007. That's pretty phenomenal growth, buoyed almost certainly by the rising share of digital music versus brick and mortar stores. Digital purchases make up 35.5% of music bought here, also up from 31% the last time Billboard released stats.
So where are all of these music purchases coming from? Best Buy and Walmart, apparently -- both retail outlets saw their shares drop by a few percentage points recently. And of course these are all percentages. I'd bet that lower music

App Empfehlung: Footballz!
Am 11. Juni beginnt die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2010.Für alle Fußballbegeisterten gibt es nun ein kleines App-Review über "Footballz!", ein Spiel, mit dem ihr euch gut die Zeit vertreiben könnt.
Man steuert ein kleines Männchen per Joystick auf einem Spielfeld. Auf dem Spielfeld rollen Bälle in verschiedene Richtungen, die man aber nicht berühren darf, denn sonst verliert man ein Leben. Zudem befinden sich auf dem Spielfeld Ballkörbe, die dem Männchen Schutz vor herumrollenden Bällen bieten.Ziel des Spiels ist es, möglichst viele orangene Bälle, die auch auf dem Spielfeld herumrollen, zu kicken indem man auf sie läuft.Das Spiel ist für 79 Cent im Appstore zu haben und macht sicherlich für ein paar Stunden Spaß.

BlackBerry 9800 spotted with multi-touch, AT&T firmware
A video demo of the BlackBerry 9800 (below) has confirmed not only that it should ship with AT&T but that it will use a significantly different touch metaphor than the Storm2: it will drop the at times criticized click-down SurePress screen but will add multi-touch for browsing and photos. Tight integration with YouTube is also shown in the BerryFix footage of what looks to be a final or near-final phone.
