Apple vermeldet weiteres Rekord-Quartal
Apple hat vor wenigen Minuten das Ergebnis des zweiten Quartals im Fiskaljahr 2010 bekannt gegeben. Mit einem Umsatz von 13,5 Mrd. US-Dollar und einem Gewinn von 3,07 Mrd. Apple mit starkem Umsatz- und Gewinnwachstum
Heute Abend hat Apple die Geschäftsergebnisse für das zweite Fiskalquartal 2010 bekannt gegeben. Verglichen mit dem Vorjahresquartal konnte Apple den Umsatz von 9.08 auf 13.5 Milliarden Dollar und den Gewinn von 1.62 auf 3.07 Milliarden Dollar steigern. Die Bruttogewinnspanne betrug 41.7 Prozent.
Apple verkaufte insgesamt 2.94 Millionen Macintosh-Computer, 33 Prozent mehr als noch 2009. 1.796 Millionen davon waren Mobilcomputer, auf die Desktop-Geräte entfielen 1.147 Millionen verkaufte Computer. Mit 8.752 Millionen verkauften iPhones konnte Apple den Rekordwert aus dem Vorquartal sogar leicht übertreffen. Auch das iPod-Geschäft lief besser als von vielen Marktbeobachtern erwartet. 10.885 Millionen verkaufte Geräte bedeuten ein Minus von lediglich einem Prozentpunkt verglichen mit 2009.

iPhone OS 4 Beta 2 ist verfügbar
Für die zahlenden iPhone Entwickler wurde soeben die neue Beta des iPhone OS 4 und des zugehörigen SDKs veröffentlicht. Verschiedene kleine und größere Fehler in den neuen APIs wurden entfernt und andere Kleinigkeiten wurden verändert. Die genauen Details entnehmen angemeldete Entwicklern den bei Apple verfügbaren Release Notes. Vor der Installation muss die Passwortsperre des iPhones abgestellt werden oder das iPhone vorher gelöscht werden.

Apple on Tuesday announced its Q2 2010 financial results, posting revenue of $13.50 billion, and net profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share. The results are up significantly over Q2 2009, in which Apple had revenue of $9.08 billion, and net profit of $1.62 billion, or $1.79 per diluted share. Gross margin rose from 39.9 to 41.7 percent, and international sales came to account for 58 percent of revenue. Apple Quartalszahlen: Es geht steil hinauf!
Vor wenigen Stunden veröffentlichte Apple die Quartalszahlen für den Zeitraum Januar bis Ende März 2010, welche wie folgt lauten: Insgesamt wurde ein Umsatz von 13,5 Milliarden US-Dollar erzielt, welcher mit einer Steigerung von 49 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal und insgesamt 3,07 Milliarden US-Dollar Nettogewinn ein absolutes Rekordhoch in der Firmengeschichte darstellt. Die Bruttogewinnspanne beläuft sich dabei auf 41,7 Prozent und von allen Umsätzen kommen 58 Prozent aus dem Ausland. Apple verzeichnet damit das beste Quartal außerhalb des Weihnachtsgeschäftes seit Gründung der Firma. Der Umsatz setzt sich hierbei aus folgenden Verkäufen zusammen:

Apple might not be too happy about having a fourth-gen iPhone prototype be stolen, but there's nothing like cold, hard cash to turn a frown upside-down -- and the company certainly made plenty of it in the second quarter of 2010, posting a $3.07b profit on $13.5b in revenue. Apple has posted an unusual new support document, warning against jailbreaking devices based on the iPhone firmware. "As designed by Apple, the iPhone OS ensures that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operate reliably," the company claims. Apple airs Dog Lover, Backpacker ads for iPhone
Apple has released two new TV ads promoting the iPhone, "Dog Lover" and "Backpacker." The first segment shows a user searching for a new pet on an app from a dog shelter. After taking "millions of pictures," the dog was then posted on Facebook and the user continued to find dog parks on the Maps app. The iPhone was also used to access an Internet-connected camera to keep an eye on the dog while the owners were gone.

Panasonic gives older MFT cameras fast autofocus, more
Panasonic today posted word of an update for all its first-generation Micro Four Thirds cameras that should speed up their performance. The G1, GF1 and GH1 will all get faster autofocusing when using non-Panasonic lenses, such as those from Olympus. Each of the three will also now fully recognize the new 14-42mm kit lens that comes with the G2 and G10.

Für registrierte Entwickler stellt Apple ab sofort eine zweite Betaversion des SDKs zum iPhone OS 4 zur Verfügung. Über den Entwicklerzugang lassen sich XCode, das SDK sowie Entwicklerbuilds für iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS und iPod touch (dritte Generation) laden. Unsere chinesischen Kollegen haben derzeit ihren Spaß auf der China Sourcing Fair 2010 in Hongkong, wir freuen uns mit und zwar angefangen beim Namen. Und natürlich gibt es auf so einer "Beschaffungsmesse" auch eine Menge interessantes Piratenmaterial, zum Beispiel das BestPower X200, was dann wohl der etwas viel zu späte Versuch darstellt, das iPod-Handy zu erfinden. An Bord: Dual-SIM-Slot, Quad-Band GSM, 2,4-Zoll-Display, Kamera mit 1,3 Megapixeln, Bluetooth, UKW, MiniUSB und MicroSD-Slot. Soll umgerechnet etwa 140 Euro kosten, allerdings hat es natürlich einen fragwürdigen Beigeschmack, oder wie es die Google-Übersetzung blumig ausdrückt: "Wirklich, sehr schwer Hütte Geschmack." Lenovo talks up LePhone, shows off app store ahead of May launch
Lenovo's Android-based LePhone (not LePhono, sadly) may not be officially launching in China until next month, but the company did just hold a launch event of sorts in the country, in which it revealed a few new details and did a fair bit of boasting. According to The Wall Street Journal, Lenovo says that it's aiming to sell "millions" of the phones in the next five years, and "tens of millions" after that -- although not just involving this particular phone, obviously. Bad DHCP handling to blame for some iPad Wi-Fi issues?
Faulty handling of DHCP (the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is likely responsible for at least some of the iPad's Wi-Fi problems, one report suggests. To make use of a Wi-Fi connection, any device must normally obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. These IPs expire after a certain amount of time, and most devices will try to renew their addresses in advance.

BlackBerry App World revenue split to match iPhone's
RIM has quietly changed the terms for BlackBerry App World in a way that gives similar terms to Apple. The smartphone creator is cutting back developers' revenue share from 80 percent of app sales to 70 percent to support new app purchasing options. Filed under: DeveloperGood news on the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK front. Apple has just posted a brand new beta, ready for you to download. The new beta comes complete with firmware for each of the supported devices (namely the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3G, and the 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch).
As usual, the details of this release remain behind the NDA wall, so you'll need to scoot on over and check them out yourself. Apple will be releasing 4.0 into the general iPhone population this summer. An iPad version will debut in the fall.

That's right: a little under two weeks since the launch event and the release of the first beta, Apple has pushed out beta 2 of its next-gen iPhone OS 4.0. Considering that our units have seemingly gotten buggier over time the longer they've had beta 1 loaded, we've got high hopes for this one -- hopes that stand a very real chance of being crushed, of course, as long as this isn't a gold build. Chaos Rings and Sonic 2 out, Square Enix games on sale

Square Enix has released their Chaos Rings game that we heard about a while ago. At US$13.99, it's one of the most expensive iPhone (not iPad -- yet) games you'll find, but the reviews are terrific so far. The game appears to be a classic Square Enix title, complete with great graphics, a deep storyline and a tight battle system. I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but it definitely looks intriguing, and if the game matches up to the hype, we could have a new bar set on Apple's handheld platform.

Tok Took Power Plug has a silly name, smart concept
The last concept we saw from designer Soon Mo Kang was a simple but innovative power strip that, with a light press, could automatically send your bulky AC adapters flying. Kang is back with another idea for plugging in and, while it's in much the same vein, it takes easy unplugging down to the individual level. Thieves steal iPad, finger

Ugh, this is a grisly one -- Bill Jordan picked up an iPad for someone else the other day from an Apple Store in a Colorado mall near him, and as he walked away, some thieves grabbed his bag away so quickly that it took part of his finger off. Scary stuff -- apparently two young men followed him out of the store down to the parking garage, jumped him and grabbed the bag. There was a scuffle which Jordan's pinky finger didn't survive. After rushing off to a hospital, he was told part of the finger had to come off.

BeetleCam wildlife photography secures stellar snaps in the wilds of Tanzania
We won't even front -- we've got a thing for visiting National Parks, and in a way, we're dangerously envious of these fellows who crafted this here BeetleCam. In short, the device is a wildlife photography robot: a four-wheeled, remote control buggy that holds a DSLR, a couple of flashes and enough torque and battery life to power through African wilds for hours on end. AT&T today added a rare dual-mode 3G modem to its choices. Apple demands return of iPhone prototype
Apple has sent legal notice asking for its prototype iPhone back, Gizmodo reports. The site's editorial director, Brian Lam, mentions that he received several phone calls from Apple on Monday, asking for the device -- for which the site paid $5,000 -- to be returned. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group today said it had finalized the core specification for Bluetooth 4.0. The finished form is a combination of all the previous wireless standards and focuses particularly on low-power use. Chrome OS devices to cost under $400
Google CEO Eric Schmidt during the Atmosphere Cloud Computing Forum revealed that Chrome OS devices should be relatively inexpensive when they go on sale (video below). He estimated that they will cost between $300 and $400 and that all the cost will be associated with the hardware, since the OS itself is free. Apple names April 30th, 5PM as date and time for 3G iPad retail launch
There was a bit of confusion with Apple's online store update yesterday as to when the 3G version of its iPad will actually make its retail debut. Let that fog of ignorance be no more, as Cupertino has today named April 30th, a Friday, as the day the WiFi + 3G slate will arrive in stores. In American stores, that is, don't get all excited if you live outside the 50 states. That's also the date when early (read: before yesterday) pre-orders will be fulfilled. Deliveries for those were promised for "late April," though clearly this date has more of the late and less of the April to it.

Powerski Jetboard: Surfen mit 45 PS (mit Video)
Das mit dem Surfen ist ja hierzulande so eine Sache: Wellen gibts mit viel Glück mal auf der Nordsee, ansonsten muss man zum Wellenreiten immer gleich irgendwo hinfliegen. Das Powerski Jetboard macht dem nun, zugegeben auf etwas unökologische Weise, ein Ende: per 45-PS starkem Motor lässt es sich auf schwindelerregende 65 km/h beschleunigen, gelenkt wird mit einem Haltegriff, der am Board befestigt ist und macht so auch den Baggersee um die Ecke fast zu einem zweiten Hawaii. Today, the California-based company released the Explorer 395 earpiece -- a $49.95 earpiece in both black and bronze flavors, and aimed at first-time Bluetooth users. How so? You get dedicated buttons for volume, power and phone call, which puts the confusing single-button-operated headsets to shame. Being a budget line, there's no fancy noise-cancellation technology offered here, although the 0.39-ounce weight and five-hour talk time (seven days of battery on standby) seem to give a good bang for the buck. Chinesisches X86-Tablet mit 10-Zoll-Touchscreen und Slider-Tastatur
Warum diese chinesische Kreation ein iPad-Klon sein soll, wie es aus dem Blogwald tönt, ist uns rätselhaft. Denn das Ding sieht nicht nur anders aus, es hat auch eine echte Innovation an Bord: Eine ausgewachsene Tastatur, die wie bei entsprechenden Handy-Modellen aus- und eigefahren werden kann. Ansonsten hat das X86 einen 10-Zoll-Tochscreen, einen Atom N450-Prozessor und Windows 7 an Bord, mehr Details gibt´s leider nicht, vor allem wie dick und schwer das Teil ist, würde uns aber brennend interessieren.

EDV-Sachverständige rügen Banken für lasches Vorgehen gegen Skimming
Der Bundesverband öffentlich bestellter und vereidigter sowie qualifizierter Sachverständiger e.V. IBM hebt nach Gewinn- und Umsatzsteigerung Jahresprognose an
IBM hat im ersten Quartal 22,9 Milliarden Dollar (17 Milliarden Euro) umgesetzt, fünf Prozent mehr als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Der Nettogewinn kletterte um 13 Prozent auf 2,6 Milliarden Dollar (1,9 Milliarden Euro) oder 1,97 Dollar pro Aktie. Apples Aktienkurs AAPL erreichte am Freitag erstmals in der Geschichte einen kurzzeitlichen Wert über 250 US-Dollar. Eigentlich liesst sich die ganze Geschichte ja schon etwas gar komisch, aber es macht allen Anschein, dass Apples Geheimpolitik um künftige Produkte für einmal aufgrund eines allzu menschlichen Fehlers scheiterte: Am 18. März dieses Jahres soll der 27-jährige Apple-Entwickler Gray Powell ein Prototyp des kommenden iPhones in einer Bar in Redwood, einer Stadt an der San Francisco Bay Area bzw. zwischen San Francisco und Cupertino, wo Apple sein Hauptquartier hat, liegen gelassen haben. Ein Tischnachbar soll zuerst noch längere Zeit auf den Besitzer gewartet haben, bevor er das Gerät an sich nahm. Via MobileMe wurde das Gerät dann am darauf folgenden Tag ausgeschalten. Nachdem sich der Finder bei Apple gemeldet hatte und diese ihm die Geschichte nicht glaubte, informierte dieser Gizmodo, welche dem Finder das Gerät für 5000 US-Dollar abkauften und nun seit diesen Tagen natürlich zahlreiche Fotos, Videos und Informationen über dieses «next generation iPhone» veröffentlichen. Radio Shack nixing sales of Sprint's Pre and Pixi, but what does it mean?
So it looks like Barron's and The Wall Street Journal have talked to enough store clerks and Sprint reps today to confirm that Radio Shack is definitely dropping the original Palm Pre and Pixi from its in-store lineup. Starbucks expands pay-by-iPhone pilot
Filed under: Odds and endsAbout six months ago, we wrote about two free Starbucks apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. myStarbucks got you to the nearest caffeinated outlet and let you build your coffee, and The Starbucks Card Mobile app replaced your physical card, allowing you to have a bar code scanned and pay for your purchases. When the card ran dry, it could be refilled with caffeine-free money. The Starbucks Card Mobile app was tested at 16 Seattle stores in the Silicon Valley.

iPad 3G orders being processed?
We've had a number of reports come in that various people's bank accounts were giving simultaneous good and bad news. First the latter: a pending charge upwards of $888 for an order you probably placed a month ago and forgot about -- hope tax day didn't wipe you out too much. The good news, should you brave that sudden financial burden, is that it emanates from Apple Computers and seems to indicate that the gang in Cupertino is, as indicated in an earlier email, on track to start delivering iPad 3Gs in late April. Gizmodo procures iPhone HD using "checkbook journalism"
Gawker Media founder Nick Denton has confirmed that Gizmodo procured the iPhone HD prototype through a payment to the source, according to several Twitter posts. Although the publishing chief has yet to disclose how much the blog paid for to get its hands on the pre-release device, MobileCrunch points to rumors suggesting the price was set at $10,000.

SugarSync for iPad syncs allows iPad editing, syncs edits
SugarSync has announced the availability of its second version of SugarSync for iPad with new edit and sync capabilities. The app syncs files between the iPad and the SugarSync cloud, which supports files and folders from any combination of Macs and PCs. TUAW Review: Write and organize handwritten notes on your iPad with Penultimate
Filed under: iPadTo look at my office, you wouldn't know right away that I'm a digital kind of guy. Rather than pull up a text editor on any one of the digital devices that surround me, I'd rather grab a pen and scrawl a note on a Post-it[TM] note. Eventually, the notes are either trashed or fall under some piece of equipment, so they're definitely not for long-term use. Over the years, I've also accumulated a pile of loose-leaf binders, Moleskines, and other notebooks containing the detritus from my brain.

Palm's web-based Ares SDK goes gold
Four solid months after going into open beta, Palm's entirely web-based SDK for webOS -- the so-called Ares SDK -- has reached version 1.0, bringing "lots and lots" of new features along for the ride. Biggies include UI-less components that add functionality to your application, in-line help, undo and copy / paste functionality (for the SDK, that is), and a plug-and-play multitouch-enabled Google Maps widget that you can drop into your own screens. Boxee beta updates add NHL, new RSS and social improvements
New beta versions of Boxee have been released, marking several significant changes to the media browsing interface. Among these is the simultaneously introduction of support for NHL GameCenter Live, a paid service through which hockey games can be watched live, or up to 48 hours after their original schedule. Some broadcasts can be watched in HD, and a special interface shows available games as well as their scores. GameCenter Live costs $20 a month, or $79 a year.

Touchscreen shortages causing iPad supply issues?
Apple's iPad supply problems have been blamed on touchscreen shortages, according to a Bloomberg report. Suppliers are allegedly running into problems meeting strong demand for the 9.7-inch displays utilized in the tablet device. The research firm iSuppli suggests the components are already sourced from three different companies including LG, Samsung, and Seiko Epson.

Google luring iPhone developers to Android
Google is actively enticing iPhone developers to write for Android, at least one report noted today. A representative from the Android Advocacy Group contacted Texts From Last Night's creator to both establish a business relationship and to ship a free Nexus One regardless of whether or not he began the project. The programmer wasn't given any direct incentives to agree to a port.

Legend Maker 1.0 for Mac generates eBooks from RTF files
ZappTek has launched a new application, Legend Maker 1.0 for Mac OS X, which converts book manuscripts from word processor files to eBooks. The new software generates eBooks files that will work with the iPad, Kindle, Reader and Nook and also software readers ibis reader and bookworm. It can generate eBooks with complex layout and design, using images, indexes, tables of contents and footnotes and endnotes.

WebSaver turns web content into a screensaver, free promotion right now

Sandwich Lab sent along word of their app WebSaver, which allows you to create a custom screensaver out of any web content you want. Once you install the screensaver, you can then go into the options and add URLs (like your Twitter feed, a Facebook page, or anything really -- you can make the front page of TUAW pop up as your screensaver), and then choose durations for each of them to show, from just a few seconds up to much longer. And you can control the brightness of the webpages, as well as disable Javascript or Flash as you want. You can even add web-based content like Vimeo videos or a webcam feed. It's surprisingly powerful and very easy to use.
