Apple releases software update for today's MacBook Pro refresh

360iDev: Saurik on the mobile application market

Jay "Saurik" Freeman took the stage here at 360iDev last night to explain the mobile application marketplace. The entire mobile application marketplace, that is. Most people wrongly perceive the App Store to be a simple user-and-developer relationship, but in reality, it's a much more complicated place, with lots of inputs and outputs for time, money, and work. You can see the big picture of his chart above -- the "user" is the faceless woman near the middle, and the "developer" is the bearded man to her left. The Engadget app for Android gets updated to 1.0.2 -- now with more widgets!
If you're a fan of the Engadget Android app (and let's be honest, you are a fan), then we've got some good news for you today. The app has been updated with some minor fixes, and one not-so-minor addition a homescreen widget! New MacBook Pro's miniDP carries audio out
The Mini DisplayPort jack on the new MacBook Pro can relay audio out, Apple said today. While all previous MacBooks have so far put out video only, the new version as part of the official DisplayPort spec also carries sound. Ars Technica was told it should work with third-party miniDP to HDMI adapters, although it's not known how many of these recognize audio through the single connector.

Ivy Leaguers asked to lay off the iPad
No iPads for the Tigers. Princeton University's Office of Information Technology is asking students to please stop using Apple's latest wonder gadget on the campus wireless network.
According to the OIT, the issue is as follows: "Network monitoring has shown that many iPad devices are causing a problem on the campus network. These devices are continuing to use an IP address they have been leased well beyond the time they should."

BitDefender brings antivirus software to Mac
BitDefender, normally focused on Windows software, has launched its first Mac-specific title in the form of Antivirus for Mac. The program handles real-time antivirus protection, automatically detecting and blocking known viruses. Users can also run manual virus checks targeted at specific folders, and set pre-determined scanning intervals. Files deemed harmful are moved to a quarantine section where they can be deleted.

Microsoft Arc Keyboard now available in white exclusively from Amazon
Microsoft's Arc Keyboard was already quite an eye-catcher in its original black, but we may just have to give the edge to this new white version with lime green accents, which is now exclusively available for pre-order from Amazon. Of course, the color is the only thing that's changed here, with the keyboard still sporting the same slim, arched design, the same tiny 2.4GHz USB transmitter and, unfortunately, the same $59.95 price tag. Still no exact release date just yet, but the keyboard will apparently start shipping out sometime in June.

Gigabyte mainboard update gives PCs iPad charging
PC maker Gigabyte has come up with a software driver for mainboard that can support the iPad's higher charging needs. Standard USB 2.0 ports on PCs will only charge the new Apple tablet when it's off, but not when running. Called the On/Off Charge driver update, the software will enable some of Gigabyte's most common AMD and Intel mainboards to charge the iPad using USB 2.0 in either state.

HTC may develop own mobile OS, follow iPhone model
HTC is considering the possibility of making its own mobile OS, the company's CFO Cheng Hui-ming mentioned in an interview on Tuesday. He was careful to note that HTC still "continue[s] to assess" its options but said that there could be definite advantages to making both hardware and software, like Apple and RIM do for the iPhone and BlackBerry. It would depend on "multiple factors" being in alignment to justify the move, Cheng told Bloomberg.

hacksugar: Hiding Apple's built-in applications
Filed under: Hacks, iPhoneTUAW reader Joe Thompson pointed us to this hint over at Mac OS X Hints that helps you hide the standard applications that ship with the iPhone, without jailbreaking. This allows you to use those spots for your preferred 3rd party alternatives without sacrificing valuable home screen real estate or messing with a lot of ugly application rearrangement in iTunes. Hands-on: Opera Mini for iPhone
The release of Opera Mini marks a new twist in the history of the App Store. Apple has, for several reasons, traditionally blocked any browser that might compete with Safari; as a result most of the browsers on the App Store have been little more than shells, tacking on extra options. Opera represents the first major, completely independent browser to be approved by Apple, and may potentially draw some users away -- in spite of some limitations.

We've seen a number of 3D printers lately, and this time we have a budget model for you (that is, if $3,000 is "budget" -- and we suppose it is, compared to the $20,000 and more some of these bad boys can cost). Microsoft puts out special-run white Arc Keyboard
Microsoft today quickly dropped word of a special edition white Arc Keyboard. The lighter hue gets a lime green secondary hue that also manifests itself in the keys. Besides being more unique than black, the design potentially helps those with home theater PCs type in the dark.

Rumor has Adobe suing Apple in weeks
A rumor on Tuesday claimed that Adobe was near suing Apple over the company's decision to ban cross-compilers in the iPhone 4.0 SDK. Contacts near Adobe purportedly said the Flash developer has already made up its mind and is set to file a lawsuit "within a few weeks." How Adobe would approach the case or what exactly it would demand weren't mentioned by ITWorld's writer, but it's presumed Adobe would have a court force Apple to allow third-party tools.

Undercover 4 adds real-time tracking for stolen Macs
Orbicule has released an update to its theft-recovery software for Macs, Undercover. Version 4 now allows users to remotely monitor a stolen Mac using the company's UndercoverCenter.com web interface. Devices can be followed in real-time, with a variety of information available from the website. The software can capture iSight pictures, screenshots, or log the current location as a Google Earth file. Users can also lock the computer and display a custom message.

LG's Snapdragon-powered LU2300 Android handset gets official
This one's been floating around for a while now and just spotted in the wild last week, but LG has finally come clean with its new LU2300 Android handset, albeit in a somewhat roundabout way on its official UK blog. Intel confirms next-gen Sandy Bridge for fall
Intel at its lead-in keynote for its Developer Forum provided more public information about Sandy Bridge, its next-generation chip architecture. Confirming many of the early details, it said the new design will mostly center around Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX). The extra code should speed up floating point math and should especially help for media rendering and other math-heavy tasks.

Motorola Backflip now scheduled to get Android 2.1 update in Q3
Decide to go with Motorola's unconventional Backflip over an Android phone with a more traditional form factor? Filed under: Macbook ProNever intimidated by its larger siblings, the 13" MacBook Pro is the closest many users will get to the fabled 12" G4 Powerbook. Today's update gives it more to brag about, like extended battery life and improved performance.
This machine comes with either a 2.4GHz or 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. As with the other models, the 13" starts off with 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB). The factory hard drive in this machine is smaller than in its siblings at either 250GB (2.4GHz) or 320GB (2.66GHz). Both are serial ATA drives at 5400 rpm (there's no 7200 rpm option for the 13" model) with the following upgrade path:

HTC 'continues to assess' developing its own smartphone OS, Palm says 'hey, assess this'
Failing a Palm acquisition, there might still be justification for HTC to build out its own software platform for many of the same reasons that buying Palm would make sense -- the company's getting bigger and more important to the market by the day, after all, and being left at the mercy of Google and Microsoft to produce cohesive platforms of their own might not sit well with Chou's team ad infinitum. Apple hints at miniDP to HDMI adapter
Apple in its launch of the new MacBook Pro today put out hints that it will support HDMI soon. The video options in its specs list show the option of HDMI output using a "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter" despite Apple having made no mention of such an adapter itself. A search of the online Apple store doesn't show any adapters of the kind, whether made by Apple or anyone else.

Day in the Life: Kin-less
If you were near an internet display terminal yesterday, you might've tragically stumbled upon one of Microsoft's Kin promo videos. Sure, the product might be slightly condescending to its supposed target market, but the promotional videos are outright MTV-gone-bad, full of hipster shorthand and fake "reality" bits. The "Day in the Life" videos are particularly egregious, featuring a guy on a road trip to burn a box of mementos from his ex while accompanied by his two new girlfriends, a terrifying parade comprised of facial hair and Williamsburg-esque terror, and a tragically-near-30 couch surfer trying to remember a drunken night of excess through pictures. Analysts cut Kindle estimates based on iPad threat
Analysts have slashed their estimates of Amazon Kindle shipments following the arrival of the iPad, BusinessWeek reports. Needham analyst Charlie Wolf has a cut a prediction of 3.6 million Kindles for 2010 down to between 2.5 and 3 million units, making for only a slight increase over the 2.2 million thought to have been sold in 2009. Overview: The new 15" MacBook Pro
Filed under: Macbook ProEarlier today, Apple released new MacBook Pros. The 15", middle-of-the-line model hits the sweet spot for many MBP customers, and this latest iteration is just as desirable as its predecessors.
This model comes in two main configurations, distinguished by either an Intel Core i5 (2.4GHz or 2.53GHz) or Core i7 (2.66GHz) processor. Apple claims that they boost performance by 50% over the previous generation MacBook Pros (I can only imagine what my experience would be switching from a 2GHz Intel Core Duo).

News: Adobe to sue Apple over Flash exclusion?

New 13-inch MacBook Pro uses custom-made NVIDIA chipset
The 320M integrated graphics chipset -- found in new 13-inch MacBook Pro models -- was custom-designed for Apple, an NVIDIA spokesperson says. Distinct from the GeForce GT 320M, the chipset is meant for Core 2 Duo-based notebooks, and is reportedly founded on a GT216 architecture with 48 shader cores. iPhone 4.0's 'iPod Out' feature to support car integration?
One of the lesser-known additions to iPhone 4.0, "iPod Out," may be intended in part to support integration with vehicles, a source suggests. When a handheld is connected to a device supporting the iPod Accessory Protocol, iPod Out will allegedly bring up a special interface (seen below) to be fed to a secondary display, with a simplified menu system resembling the one on the iPod classic and nano. Evidence for a connection to cars is said to come from two strings in iPod Out code, "IAPSimpleRemoteCarButtonNotification" and "IAPSimpleRemoteCarButtonTypeKey."

MMFixed's Magic Mouse fix hands-on, literally
Apple haters, cherish the moment while you can. The Magic Mouse's odd ergonomics aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea -- including some of us at Engadget -- so we were more than a bit stoked when our silicone lump from MMFixed arrived in post today. Installation was straight-forward and mess-free thanks to the small suction pad underneath, and despite the fairly strong attachment, we were able to easily slide or rotate the soft cushion on the mouse for adjustments. We've had no problems with multitouch input thus far, and the old wristache-after-prolonged-usage seems to now be a thing of the past. So yeah -- it's safe to say that this squidgy fix was well worth the $10 investment (although it has gone up to $12 now, which is hard

Apple kommunizierte bisher keinerlei Infos über den iPad-Launch in der Schweiz oder einem der restlichen Ländern, die noch bis «Ende April» das iPad offiziell erhalten. Da der iPad in den USA an einem Samstag (am Karsamstag, um genau zu sein), gelaunched wurde, wurde für den Europa-Start bisher der 24. April hoch gehandelt in der Gerüchteküche. Bisher von Apple komplett im Dunkeln gelassen wird man auch bezüglich wer in der Schweiz alles den iPad vertreiben wird. Opera Mini für das iPhone zugelassen
Der “kleine Opera”, der speziell für das iPhone angepasst wurde erhielt nun die bislang als fragwürdig gesehene Zulassung seitens Apple. Schon im Vorfeld gab es diesbezüglich einen Medienrummel. Wurde doch gemutmaßt, Apple würde die Freischaltung des umstrittenen Browser untersagen, da er als direkte Konkurrenz zum Safari-Browser zu sehen ist.

National Geographic TV app a disappointment

The app is designed to let you know what the cable channel is airing, and you can certainly browse the schedule. But there is no search option, so finding what you want to watch is a festival of fruitless finger flicking. Not very helpful really.

Last-minute leak shows Core i5 MacBook Pro specs
A last-minute leak today has floated the likely specs for Apple's long-expected MacBook Pro refresh. Almost all models will use either 2.4GHz or 2.53GHz Core i5 processors, although the high-end 13- and 15-inch models may use the 2.66GHz Core i7; it's presumed the 17-inch model will have a BTO Core i7 option. Notably, AppleInsider also claimed that matte may go away in favor of a "glossy anti-glare" that would keep the glass but still cut down on reflections.

Cisco as promised launched the Flip Slide HD as its first major pocket camera upgrade. Lenovo delaying Skylight to compete against iPad?
Lenovo's decision to delay the Skylight until July may have stemmed directly from competitive pressure from the iPad, according to an alleged leak. While the company hasn't explained it publicly, notebook industry contacts said Lenovo isn't happy with the performance versus the Apple tablet and that both the control and feature set aren't as strong as they could be.

Firefox jetzt auch für Palm Pre

Palm steht kurz vor dem Verkauf, da spendiert man ihm noch gnädigerweise eine Firefox Mobile-Version. Entwickler Dave Townsend, der für Mozilla unter anderem an Firefox arbeitet, hat innerhalb von zwei Tagen die Android-Version des Browsers auf das webOS gehievt. 500.000 Verkäufe: iPad Nachfrage weiterhin hoch !
Die iPad Nachfrage ist auch noch nach zwei Wochen sehr hoch. Die 16 und 32 GB Geräte gehören mit zu den Knappesten Beständen. J.P. Morgan schaute in 15 von insgesamt 221 App Stores in den USA vorbei und stellte mit Erschrecken fest, dass 11 Geschäfte lediglich die 64Gb Variante vorrätig hatte.

Specs zum geleakten Motorola-Phone aufgetaucht

Nachdem wir nun das Kin One kennen, fällt uns natürlich auf, wie sehr dieses geleakte Motorola-Phone dem Microsoft-Modell gleicht. Inzwischen hat das Teil einen Namen, nämlich "Twist", und es ist eine Liste mit Specs aufgetaucht: 67x67 mm groß, QWERTY-Slider. 15,8mm dick, Android 2.1 mit MotoBlur, 2,8-Zoll großes 320x240er Display, 3 Megapixel-Kamera, 700mHz CPU, microSD-Slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 und integriertes GPS. Wenn das Dokument (nach dem Break) recht behält, wird das Twist am 10.Juni rauskommen.

Neue Google-Docs-Version: Schneller, besser, ohne Offline-Modus
Der Suchmaschinen-Riese Google hat seine Online-Office-Suite überarbeitet und kommt dem ehrgeizigen Ziel, eine kostenfreie Alternative zu Microsoft Office und OpenOffice im Web anzubieten, ein deutliches Stück näher. Dabei ist das Augenmerk offensichtlich auf Kollaboration gerichtet: So wurde beispielsweise ein neuer Echtzeiteditor eingeführt, in dem mehrere Benutzer gleichzeitig an einem Dokument arbeiten können. Der Clou dabei: Wie der Name schon verrät, sehen alle Benützer sämtliche Änderungen in Echtzeit. Die aus der Tabellenkalkulation bereits bekannte Chat-Funktion wurde jetzt auch in die Textverarbeitung übernommen. Spiro und Zylo: Neue Walkman-Handys von Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson hat mit den Modellen Spiro und Zylo zwei neue Walkman-Handys mit Schiebemechanismus vorgestellt, die auf die Nutzung sozialer Netzwerke zugeschnitten sein sollen. Google Text & Tabellen mausert sich zur Office-Alternative
Google hat die Online-Office-Anwendung Text & Tabellen überarbeitet und einige neue Funktionen hinzugefügt. Unter anderem steht das Zeichenprogramm Drawings nun als eigenständige Anwendung zur Verfügung. Man kann damit beispielsweise Zeichnungen und Flussdiagramme erstellen und freigeben sowie mit anderen kollaborativ daran arbeiten.

Eine halbe Million verkauft: Hohe Nachfrage nach dem iPad

Das iPhone 2G stirbt aus
Schaut man sich die Systemvoraussetzungen für das kommende iPhone OS 4.0 an, so fällt einem direkt auf, dass das erste iPhone dort totgeschwiegen wird. Auf Nachfrage eines Kunden meldete sich sogar Steve Jobs höchstpersönlich, der auf die Frage nach zukünftigen Aktualisierungen mit einem kurzen "Sorry, no." das Ende der Updates für das iPhone Classic bekanntgab. Doch es kommt noch härter: Sollte euer iPhone 2G in Zukunft einen Hardwareschaden erleiden, so wird es wohl auch nicht mehr repariert.

Netzfundstück: Windows 95 auf dem iPad
Als ich gestern über die Möglichkeiten des iPad-Jailbreaks im Zusammenhang mit George Hotz' Erfolg schrieb, ahnte ich insgeheim exakt jene Apps: Ein User installierte sich auf seinem iPad einen Windows-Emulator und zugleich Windows 95 direkt mit. Nach Aussage des Videokommentares verwendet der User einen BOCHS-Emulator, den die Entwickler bei Kamagames.com selbst angepasst haben. Na dann, viel Spaß mit einer der besseren Windows-Versionen.

Gartner: IT-Ausgaben steigen 2010 weltweit um 5,3 Prozent
Gartner rechnet im laufenden Jahr mit weltweiten IT-Ausgaben in Höhe von 3,394 Billionen Dollar. Das entspricht einem Plus von 5,3 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Die Marktforscher bestätigen damit eine erste Prognose vom Januar, wobei sich der für 2009 ermittelte Vergleichswert seitdem von 3,3 auf 3,2 Billionen Dollar reduziert hat. 2011 sollen die Ausgaben über 3,5 Billionen Dollar betragen, 4,2 Prozent mehr als 2010.

Xtra-Zone-App längst von Apple genehmigt; noch nicht veröffentlicht
Seit Wochen warten unzählige Xtra-Zone-Benutzer auf die von der Swisscom längst versprochene Xtra-Zone-App für das iPhone. Seit der Umstellung auf die neue Xtra-Zone funktionieren alle Dritthersteller-Apps, die via Xtra-Zone von den 500 kostenlosen SMS pro Monat gebrauch machten, nicht mehr. Die Swisscom versprach eine eigene Xtra-Zone-Applikation um auch künftig auf dem iPhone von eben diesen 500 kostenlosen SMS pro Monat gebrauch machen zu können. Doch das Warten zieht sich nun bereits seit Wochen hin. Offiziell heisst es, die App sei bei Apple eingereicht und im «Freigabeprozess». Wie wir mittlerweile aus mehreren, voneinander unabhängigen und vertrauenswürdigen Quellen wissen, hat Apple die App schon seit langem freigegeben. Es sollen sogar bereits erste Updates freigeschalten worden sein. Die App ‘wäre’ also schon lange verfügbar, jedoch hält sie Swisscom selbst noch zurück. Microsoft stellt erstes eigenes Handy vor
Microsoft hat sein erstes eigenes Mobiltelefon angekündigt. Das "Kin" soll sich besonders zur mobilen Nutzung von Sozialen Netzwerken eignen, da Social-Networking-Funktionen in die Handystruktur integriert sind. Deshalb bezeichnet Microsoft das Gerät selbst als Social Phone. Die Nutzeroberfläche des Kin bietet keine Menüs und Icons sondern Themen wie Kontakte, Freunde, Textnachrichten, Bilder, Videos oder Soziale Netzwerke.

Apple erlaubt Opera-Browser für iPhone
Apple erlaubte bisher keinen anderen Browser neben Safari auf dem iPhone – nun scheint man in Cupertino über den eigenen Schatten gesprungen zu sein, denn seit dieser Nacht ist Operas «Opera mini» für im App Store für das iPhone OS erhältlich. Der Browser ist eine interessante Alternative für den Apple-Browser – besonders dann, wenn mal gerade keine schnelle Internet-Verbindung verfügbar ist, denn «Operas mini» ist im allgemeinen doch relativ schnell, stellt die Seiten jedoch nicht ganz so sauber dar, wie es der WebKit-Browser aus dem Hause Apple tut. Trotzdem ist «Opera mini» äusserst Interessant, bietet er zum Beispiel auch eine In-Site-Suche und bietet er schlussendlich eine Alternative zu einem iPhone-Programm von Apple, was Apple bisher vehement überall ablehnte.

Mac OS X 10.6.3 in Version 1.1 erschienen
Mac OS X 10.6.3 steht seit einigen Tagen zur Verfügung. Interessanterweise ist aber nicht Mac OS X 10.6.4 das nächste Update, sondern Mac OS X 10.6.3 Version 1.1. Sowohl für OS X Client als auch OS X Server steht die Aktualisierung zur Verfügung. Safari-Alternative Opera Mini jetzt im App Store
Ab sofort kann man Operas Mini mobile Browser im App Store kostenlos beziehen. Bereits Ende März hatten die Entwickler die Alternative zu Apples Browser für das iPhone eingereicht. Die Zulassung im App Store überrascht: Der Hersteller hat in der Vergangenheit immer wieder App-Alternativen abgelehnt, die bereits vorhandene Anwendungen aus Cupertino ersetzen könnten.

Dies ist jetzt über das Update 10.6.3 v1.1 geschehen. Genaue Informationen zu den Veränderungen zu 10.6.3 gibt Apple nicht heraus. Heute noch neue MacBook Pros?
Die Gerüchteküchte brodelt schon seit Wochen – und heute scheint es mal wieder so weit zu sein: Apple könnte heute das heiss-ersehnte Update für die MacBook Pros lancieren. Zum Beispiel das australische Macworld-Magazin bezieht sich auf ‘vertrauenswürdige’ Quellen und nennt den heutigen Tag als Lancierungsdatum für neue Apple Profi-Notebooks. Aber auch verschiedene Händler (z.B. BestBuy) und gar Apple Retail Stores können aktuell keine MacBook Pros mehr liefern, weil die Lager leergeräumt sind. Beim US-Warenhändler «Micro Center» soll jedenfalls bereits eine Lagerliste mit neuen Modell-Nummern für MacBook Pros aufgetaucht sein.
Laut AppleInsider könnte es die neuen Geräte neben den schon lange spekulierten Modellen mit Intel Core i5 und Core i7 auch mit einem Modell mit dem Core i3 geben. Man ist sich jedoch nicht sicher ob der Prozessor vielleicht auch ‘nur’ in einem neuen Einsteiger-iMac verbaut werden könnte. Opera Mini erscheint im App Store
Heute ist Operas iPhone Browser "Opera Mini" im App Store erschienen. Zwanzig Tage dauerte der Prozess von Einstellen bis zur Zulassung durch Apple. Opera hatte im Vorfeld viel Aufmerksamkeit durch Veröffentlichung eines Countdowns der jetzt verstrichenen Zeit gemacht.
Der neue iPhone Browser zeichnet sich durch verschiedenen Einstellmöglichkeiten und die Option Bilder von den Servern Operas vor dem Herunterladen aus dem Netz kleiner rechnen zu lassen aus. Dies soll vor allem bei langsamen Internetverbindungen die Surfgeschwindigkeit erhöhen. Der Browser ist kostenlos und nimmt 1 MB Speicher am iPhone ein.

Firefox ported to Pre, N900 says 'psh, whatever, I'm still awesome'
WebKit's all well and good, but every once in a while there's a reason why you've got to pull out the Old Standby, right? Once reserved for the Maemo Elite, Firefox is slowly spreading from pocket to pocket, and webOS is mercifully the latest to get hooked up. We don't know the full backstory here yet -- it looks like you can't download a user-friendly package right now -- but this'll undoubtedly be a good option when the Pre's in-built browser simply won't do. It's not an official port we're looking at, but let's be honest: the community does a better job half the time, right?

Google buys Plink, puts it to work on Google Goggles
Well, it looks like Google Googles could soon be getting a few enhancements, as visual search company Plink has just announced that it's been acquired by Google, and that it will now focus all its future development efforts on Google's own visual search app. For those not familiar with it, Plink is the UK-based company behind the PlinkArt Android app, which lets you simply take a photo of a painting and then receive all the pertinent information about it. Opera tonight revealed the surprise news that Opera Mini for the iPhone has been approved by Apple. The app is the first not to use a WebKit-based rendering engine and promises to speed up browsing significantly while also cutting back on bandwidth. Microsoft: Kin and Windows Phone 7 will share more technology over time
Sure, Nokia's already proven that it's possible to commercially support multiple mobile platforms at a time, but is it really a great idea? Even Nokia ultimately ended up collapsing Series 80 and 90 in to S60 over the years, but Microsoft's going in a distinctly different direction by rolling out Kin and Windows Phone 7 at nearly the same time (plus the spectre of WinMo 6.x, which'll undoubtedly soldier on in some niche markets for years to come). Our man Thomas Ricker was just wondering how long it would take before Apple determined the fate of Opera Mini for iPhone, and we've got some good news -- it's been approved and will be available for free on the App Store within 24 hours! Palm may license webOS as alternative to takeover
Palm may license webOS outright if a sale to another company doesn't pan out, sources claimed on Monday. The company has so far said it has no plans to license out its platform, but Reuters has heard that such a deal would be one option. They've taken Alice to a new place with their interactive graphics that simulate the kind of reader engagement you'd normally find in a pop-up book. Kin is basically a Zune HD inside, can go for a weekend on a charge
In a discussion with Kin project manager Derek Snyder this afternoon, we've confirmed that both the Kin One and Kin Two are built on the same foundation as the Zune HD -- in other words, they're running NVIDIA Tegra silicon, and there's no reason that anything you see on a Zune HD couldn't run just as well on a Kin. Of course, that's a purely theoretical statement at this point since Zune apps don't work on Kin as it stands -- the platform's completely closed, though Microsoft has been insistent that we should keep a close eye on its over-the-air updates after launch as features evolve. Google tablet to use Chrome browser, handle Flash
Google's just-leaked Android tablet could pack a full-fledged web browser if a further slip proves true. Although it would use the mobile OS, it would have the full Chrome web browser rather than what's normally built-in. iPad VGA-Adapter verschlüsselt: Ältere Monitore verweigern Wiedergabe
Zwei Tage nach unserem Kurztest des iPad VGA-Adapters haben uns zwei eMail-Zuschriften auf eine, so bislang noch nicht erwähnte, Restriktion bei der Video-Ausgabe des Tablets aufmerksam gemacht. So lassen sich im iTunes Store erworbene Filme nicht auf jedem externen VGA-Monitor ausgeben. Apple, so scheint es, steuert den Display-Ausgang des iPads unter Zuhilfenahme des HDCP Verschlüsselungsverfahrens an und setzt zur Wiedergabe einen HDCP-Zertifizierten Monitor bzw. ein HDCP-kompatiblen Fernseher voraus.
Der Verschlüsselungsstandard sorgt üblicherweise dafür, dass digitale Video-Bilder nicht direkt am Adapter mitgeschnitten werden können, dürfte sich im Alltagseinsatz aber durchaus negativ bemerkbar machen. Critical Media has announced that its Syndicaster service is now being used by Journal Broadcast Group to distribute video clips to the iPad. The platform allows users to create or edit video clips remotely from sources such as over-the-air video, web feeds, or uploaded video.

Time: iPad subscriptions soon, Amazon stalling on color
Time Warner's chief Ann Moore has dropped hints in a new interview of subscription media for the iPad coming in the near future. The Apple tablet is "only a newsstand" right now and requires buying one issue at a time, but in three months magazines like Time will have more conventional plans. Moore didn't tell Bloomberg if this would happen within the existing iPad app or in iBooks, although Apple hasn't unveiled any subscription plans for its online store.

Palm also looking at licensing webOS and / or finding new investors
Although we've got the feeling that Palm will eventually be sold off, apparently that's not the only option on the table: Reuters has followed up last night's news that Palm is up for sale with some more details, including the revelation that the company is also considering licensing webOS and / or seeking an additional infusion of cash from an outside investor. We're at all sure who'd be willing to join Bono's Elevation Partners in pumping more cash into Palm as it stands right now, but we can certainly see the company loosening the strings and licensing webOS to other manufacturers, something it did with great success back in the Palm OS days. Gemeinsam mit dem Softwarehersteller 4tiitoo hat das Berliner Unternehmen Neofonie am Montag das mit Spannung erwartete „WePad“ im Rahmen einer Pressekonferenz vorgestellt. Sena takes pre-orders on leather iPad cases
Sena has begun taking pre-orders on four new leather iPad cases, designed explicitly as luxury models. Each is handmade with authentic Napa leather. The Folio uses a notebook design, but with the difference that the latch can be pulled back for use as a stand. Inside the case has a velvet lining, and pockets for cards and checkbooks.
