DIY VR rig makes neck pain an un-virtual reality
Sure, there's plenty of practical VR options available these days (DIY and otherwise), but there's also something to be said for rigs that stick to virtual reality's cumbersome, unwieldy roots. Sharing that sentiment is DIYer Gavan Woolery, who combined an Acer GD235HZ 3D monitor, a pair of shutter glasses, and a TrackIR 5 head-tracking system to build this rig that manages to make the helmet from Videodrome look comfortable. Kindle may reach retail in bid to thwart iPad
A screen capture of Target's inventory system today has suggested that the retailer will be the first to carry the Amazon Kindle at retail. The six-inch model is listed as arriving on April 25th and would carry the same $259 price as it does online. It's not clear from the Engadget tipster whether there would be any functional changes, although that isn't expected.

Apple wins rights to 16 patents covering range of concepts
Apple has won the rights to an unusually large collection of patents, 16 in total, submitted through the US Patent and Trademark Office. While some are less significant than others, several cover key aspects of Apple technology. In the latter category are two documenting the multi-touch interfaces of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. One patent addresses a virtual keyboard concept, while the second describes a means of error correction for a multi-touch surface.

Android Market app count surges 68% in March
The number of Android apps reaching Android Market shot up by 68 percent in March, new data from AndroLib claimed. While the number of titles added to the store had reached a high of 5,532 in February, the app count grew by a much larger 9,320 titles last month. An official estimate for the total Android catalog wasn't given, although Google itself recently put the official mark at 30,000.

Smart Devices announces R7 e-book reader to a world in apathy
It's a fact of life: Every company gets into e-readers sooner or later. Therefore, Smart Devices has surprised no one by announcing that it will be branching off from its usual MID fare to launch one of its own. myTouch Slide leaks from Radio Shack Direct2U system
What do we have here, then? According to an anonymous tipster, this is the first appearance of the rumored myTouch Slide -- the alleged and presumed successor to the G1 on T-Mobile -- in Radio Shack's (um, "The Shack's") Direct2U system. These things are always to be taken with a grain of salt, but really -- who would fake this? All we can say is that we sure hope that when the image does arrive ("soon") it looks a sight better than the pics we've already seen.

Vue 8.4 Frontier gains native DAZ 3D support
E-on has posted v8.4 of Vue Frontier, one of the specialized editions of its Vue landscape generation and rendering tool. In addition to creating landscapes and populating them with vegetation, the Frontier edition supports the insertion of character models. Apple confirms iPad issues with dual-band WiFi routers, offers fix (sort of)
Judging from our recent poll, a sizable number of folks have had problems with their iPad losing its WiFi connection, and Apple has now confirmed that such an issue does exist -- although it's not exactly saying there's any problems with the iPad itself. According to a new knowledge base article, the issue is known to occur with some third-party dual-band WiFI routers, and tends to happen if you're the same name for each network or different security settings for each network. To ensure your iPad automatically rejoins WiFi networks, Apple suggests (you guessed it) giving the networks different names, and making sure that they're using the same security settings. Gogo offers $35 unlimited, multi-airline Wi-Fi plan
Gogo provided a first for in-flight Internet today by adding a monthly subscription plan to its lineup. Instead of paying per flight or for a 30-day pass, the $35 per month offer gives permanent, auto-renewing Internet access. It should work on all flights covered by Gogo and is potentially much less expensive for those who travel multiple times per month.

Kindle coming to Target on April 25?
We've always wondered if and when Amazon would get the Kindle into brick-and-mortar stores to counteract the see-it-with-your-eyes marketing advantage held by competitors like Barnes and Noble, and it looks like we just got our answer -- this is a shot of a Target inventory handheld showing a listing for Amazon's e-reader. We're told that the in-store date is April 25, so we'll be keeping an eye out -- and we're definitely curious to see if Amazon's retail packaging for stores is any flashier than the current Kindle box.

Dell's Mobile Activation Center launches, getting trapped in contracts gets a whole lot easier
We never thought that getting our mobile broadband devices activated was all that complicated, but apparently there are plenty of Dell customers that will disagree -- so many, in fact, that the company has rolled out something called the Mobile Activation Center. The whole thing is pretty much idiot-proof: after you purchase your mobile broadband-packin' notebook or netbook on Dell.com, you'll be prompted to activate the data card and select your data plan (adding to your existing account or setting up a new one). Geohot brings back other OS support with PS3 3.21OO custom firmware
Well, Geohot promised a workaround for Sony's removal of the "install other OS" feature in PS3 firmware 3.21 and now Geohot has delivered. While it's not available to the public just yet, Geohot's 3.21OO custom firmware will apparently be simple to install and, as you can see in the video after the break, it works just as you'd expect and simply restores the "other OS" option to its previous place. Geohot even says that the custom firmware might actually enable the other OS feature on the PS3 Slim, but he hasn't yet had a chance to try it out.

Flip Slide HD leak shows second screen, 16GB storage
Cisco is about to release the first major design for the Flip since the company bought Pure Digital, a scoop from a Best Buy store has confirmed. Aping the design of a phone slider, the Flip Slide HD would have the familiar small LCD and basic recording controls but an angled slide-out view with a second, larger screen to watch videos much like a portable DVD player. MobileMe aids in arrest of San Francisco iPhone thieves
MobileMe has played a part in trapping two San Francisco robbers, writes the San Francisco Chronicle. A 41-year-old man is reported to have been standing at the corner of Van Ness and Oak on Friday, holding an Apple notebook and iPhone until another "very large" man -- weighing about 400 pounds -- grabbed the notebook and ran. Although the 41-year-old was able to tackle the thief, both the computer and iPhone were lost when a third man in a Lexus came to the original robber's rescue.

Kriminalbeamte fordern Notruf fürs Internet

(M)eine iPad-Odyssee
Meine iPad-Bestellung verließ fünf Minuten nach der Apple-Freischaltung für Vorbesteller meinen Webbrowser. Dafür war eine amerikanische Kreditkarte von Nöten. Diese stellte ein Freund in San Francisco zur Verfügung, der auch seine Postanschrift hinterlegte. Das erwies sich als richtigen Schritt, da Apple die Vorbestellungen zu professionellen Versandanbieter annullierte.
Pünktlich am Samstag den 03. April erfolgte die Auslieferung.

Redbox may start $4 monthly movie streaming
The pioneer of the movie rental kiosk, Redbox, is considering starting a very low cost Internet video streaming service based on the contents of a recent survey. As proposed, it would cost just $4 per month for unlimited online viewing and would still include four of the normally $1 DVD rentals as part of the plan. Analyst: iPad could become 'central console for the home'
The iPad should over time evolve into the "central console for the home," even if expectations should be guarded for the time being, says UBS analyst Maynard Um. The firm is beginning its first unit estimates for the iPad, calling for 2.1 million tablets to ship in FY2010, followed by another 4.6 million in FY2011. We love to create things: drawings, movies, photos, songs, and, on occasion, stunning literary imagery with the help of text styling. While Apple didn't necessarily blow us away with its offerings on this front for the iPad (no GarageBand, iPhoto, or iMovie, for instance), 3rd party developers are naturally happy to oblige. Gartner: over 50% of PCs for kids to use touchscreens
More than half of all computers destined for children will use a touchscreen by 2015, Gartner predicted today. Thanks in part to the iPad, over 50 percent of the systems sold for below age 15 will have some kind of touch. Canon pro cams record 4:2:2 1080p to flash
Canon's turn at NAB launches was headlined today by two pro-grade camcorders. The XF300 and XF305 both use Canon's XF Codec to capture 50Mbps, 4:2:2 1080p video and store it directly on dual CompactFlash cards. The output gives it twice as much color resolution compared to regular HDV and should also be a widespread standard with Apple's Final Cut Studio, Adobe Premiere, Avid and other editing suites.

Intel's Atom D525 to offer 1.8GHz with no bump in consumption?
The solder has barely hardened attaching Intel's Atom D510 to a suite of nettops and the like, but already we're getting word of its successor, the supposed D525. Many have expressed disappointment that the D510 offers no better performance than its predecessor, but the new D525 should do better thanks to both a slight bump in speed (up to 1.8GHz) and compatibility with DDR3 memory. Urteil: FCC kann US-Provider nicht zu Netzneutralität zwingen
Die amerikanische Telekommunikationsbehörde Federal Communications Commission (FCC) hat keine gesetzliche Kompetenz, um Internet-Providern Regeln zur Netzneutralität vorzuschreiben. Das hat das amerikanische Berufungsgericht für den D.C. Circuit jetzt festgestellt. Ein Senat mit drei Richtern hob in Washington einstimmig eine Unterlassungsanordnung vom August 2008 gegen Comcast auf. Die Blue-ray Disc Association hat zwei neue Formate für Blue-ray-Medien angekündigt: BDXL und IH-BD. BDXL-Discs verfügen über drei beziehungsweise vier Schichten mit zusammen 100- oder 128 Gigabyte Speicherplatz. RED Station modular reader ships April 14
RED used the advent of NAB to detail and ship the RED Station, a uniquely modular storage reader for its greater-than-HD cameras. The system revolves around a core base station that supplies most of the power and can add one or more readers to take in different formats. A CF reader takes the most common removable storage on RED's cameras, and the MAG 2.5 loads in notebook-sized hard drives and SSDs. iSuppli pegs iPad component costs at as little as $259.60
This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone: just because Apple's touting the "magical" $499 pricepoint of the iPad doesn't mean they're selling it at a loss. After carefully poring over the iPad's internals, iSuppli has added up a bill of materials as low as $259.60 for the 16GB iPad, including a $95 screen and $26.80 processor. The good news for us is that there's actually a lot more complexity inside the iPad than iSuppli was expecting -- they originally estimated the device at $219.35 in materials. Google nimmt neuen Anlauf für 3D-Web
Google scheint sein Projekt O3D durch eine neue Basis wiederbeleben zu wollen: den von der Mozilla Foundation und der Khronos Group vorgelegten Standard WebGL. Einen Kommentar wollte das Unternehmen dazu nicht abgeben: "Wir unterstützen 3D-Ansätze für das Web sehr und arbeiten hart daran, diese Idee unter anderem durch Technologien wie O3D und WebGL in Browser zu bringen. Notion Ink tablet still in works, won't ship without Flash
Notion Ink, the makers of the upcoming Adam tablet, has released an update recently, saying it is working with multiple partners to bring a wide range of content to its device. On the company's official blog, Notion Ink founder and CEO Rohan Shravan promises the device will have access to educational content and a competitive price. Shravan also reveals an iPad is on order in order to compare the devices and see if Notion Ink missed anything in its development and feature set.

TSA vets iPad for carry-on bags; Apple iPad cases arrive
Travelers can keep an iPad inside of their regular carry-on luggage, the US Transportation Security Administration has declared. Under TSA regulations, any notebook-like device must normally be removed from a bag during the security screening process. We just had a chance to go hands er, rear-on with Honda's latest R&D experiment, the U3-X Personal Mobility Device, and we've got the say -- it was a moving experience. If you'll recall, the tiny, uni-wheeled unit is built on the same balancing principles which the company's ASIMO uses, and utilizes the world's first omni-directional driving wheel system. What does all that mean? Well, it means that when you sit down on the thing, it moves in whatever direction you lean in, however slightly. The experience is kind of amazing, as it requires very little effort on the rider, and though you feel like you could easily go flying off of the U3-X, you always retain a solid center of balance. iPhone OS 3.2: Umlaute einfacher schreiben
Mit dem auf dem iPad installierten iPhone OS-Version 3.2 lassen sich Umlaute ein ganzes Stück einfacher schreiben als bislang: Anstatt den Finger bei “gedrücktem” Buchstaben auf den im Ausklapp-Menü darüber angezeigten Umlaut zu ziehen genügt es hier, denn Finger einfach etwas länger auf dem zugehörigen Buchstabe liegen zu lassen (ein Video hängt unten an).

Umlaute schreiben unter iPhone OS 3.2
Das auf dem iPad installierte iPhone OS 3.2 birgt eine kleine, aber ausgesprochen praktische Änderung im Bezug auf das Schreiben von Umlauten. Es genügt nun, den Finger einfach etwas länger auf dem betreffenden Buchstaben liegen zu lassen und man muss diesen nicht mehr wie momentan noch auf dem Touch oder dem iPhone erforderlich seitlich weiter auf den entsprechenden Umlaut schieben. Diese Verbesserung dürfte sich ausgesprochen erfreulich auf den Schreibfluss auswirken, ein kleines Demo-Video hängt unten an.

EyeTV 1.0.2 für iPhone streamt Video auch über UMTS

Senator wants investigation of AdMob deal
US Senator Herb Kohl on Tuesday sent a letter to FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz urging an investigation into Google's buyout of AdMob. The official's notice warned that Google's dominance of both ads and search on the desktop, along with AdMob's control of the mobile space, could create "undue market dominance" for ads either in search or within apps. Kohl stopped short of calling for a halt to the deal but wanted a review.
