Fnac mit neuen iPad-Preisspekulationen
Ein Arikel unserer Freunde von iGeneration hat für ein wenig Aufregung gesorgt: Danach hätte die französische Handelskette Fnac angeblich bereits die offiziell erst für nächste Woche angekündigten, europäischen iPad-Preise veröffentlicht.
Aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach handelt es sich hierbei allerdings nur um spekulative Preisangaben. Laut einer Fnac nahestehenden Quelle waren die Preisangaben schlicht fiktiv und man habe noch keinerlei Informationen zu den von Apple vorgesehenen Verkaufspreisen.

Google Chrome beta speeds up, adds built-in Flash
Google on Tuesday put out new betas of Chrome for Linux, Mac and Windows that it claims are all major leaps in performance. All three have JavaScript engines that run between 30 to 35 percent faster in benchmarks like SunSpider. The releases are as much as two to three times faster than the original Windows-only beta, Google said.

Windows Phone 7 based on a hybrid Windows CE 6 / Compact 7 kernel?
Up until now, we'd heard and believed that Windows Phone 7 would be based on Microsoft's time-tested Windows CE 6 kernel -- aging, yes, but still considerably newer and more technically modern than the CE 5 upon which Windows Mobile 6.x operates. Thing is, Windows Embedded evangelist Olivier Bloch just dropped the knowledge this week that the company's all-new phone platform will actually be "based on the Windows Embedded Compact 7 core," which sounds a lot to us like Redmond skipped right over CE 6 and went straight for the latest and greatest (and still unavailable to the general public) stuff.

Apple reagiert auf Outlook-Sync-Probleme

London hotel offers guests iPad during stay

iPhone, iPod owners outpace consoles, Blu-ray on downloading
iPhone and iPod touch owners are far more likely to download content than for just about any other electronics with the option, the NPD Group confirmed today. Exactly 75 percent of the Apple device users have download some kind of extra content where just 19 percent of game console owners and 17 percent of Blu-ray player owners do the same. The App Store and iTunes are both credited with creating the wide gap as their content and experience are much more welcoming.

Epson outs ultra-fast all-in-one, small office scanners
Epson on Tuesday unveiled the new WorkForce 520 all-in-one printer, scanner, copier and fax machine along with the Perfection V33 and Perfection V330 Photo scanners. The WorkStation 520 is said to be the fastest offering in its category, with 15 ISO pages per minute in black and white or 5.4 ISO pages per minute in color. Adobe behind Apple antitrust complaints, sources say
An Adobe complaint is the main cause behind reported federal interest in antitrust charges against Apple, according to Bloomberg sources. Apple recently changed the rules for developers, forbidding the use of third-party tools in the creation of iPhone and iPad apps. In doing so, Adobe's complaint is said to suggest, Apple has actively interfered with companies' ability to compete.

Sky bringt die Bundesliga aufs iPad
Die knapp 2,5 Millionen Abonnenten des PayTV-Senders Sky werden Auszüge aus dem Programm des Senders zukünftig auch auf auf dem iPad empfangen können. Wie das Handelsblatt berichtet, kam diese Kooperation zwischen dem Sky-Mutterhaus und Apple jetzt zustande. Eine entsprechende App soll wenige Wochen nach dem iPad-Verkaufsstart in Deutschland zur Verfügung stehen und sich hauptsächlich dem Thema Sport widmen.

Dropbox auf dem iPad mit mehr Funktionen
Dropbox ist mit der neuen Version 1.2 zur Universal-App (iTunes) geworden und steht nun auch auf dem iPad zur Verfügung. Anders als auf dem iPhone erlaubt das Programm auf dem iPad auch die Weitergabe von Dokumenten an andere Apps wie z.B. iWork oder Air Sharing. Confirmed: BlackBerry two-way sync for Gmail is now live
We've just heard from the boys and girls at RIM that the company did, in fact, deploy the long-awaited two-way Gmail synchronization capability to North American BIS users this week. What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that if you've got a BlackBerry on any North American carrier that isn't going through BES, Gmail should behave more like it should -- deleted items will disappear from your phone, emails read elsewhere will show up as read on the device, and you'll have access to all of your sent items. Oh, and you can create and delete labels from the comfort of your QWERTY thumb board, too, which is a sweet deal. Sure, the feature might be literally years late as far as we're concerned -- but hey, better late than never.

ABC updates iPad app with 3G streaming
Confirming earlier reports, US network ABC has already released an updated version of ABC Player for the iPad. Report: Apple could realize $1 Billion of iPad revenue in its 1st quarter
Filed under: iPadThere are some smoking hot numbers coming out of Cupertino CA this week and they're all about iPad sales. Just yesterday, Apple announced that they had sold 1 million iPads in the first 28 days of availability. As Business Insider (BI) notes, selling 1 million units of anything in a month is impressive, much less during April in the USA when most people are fretting over taxes.

Intel demonstrates Light Peak on a laptop, says 10Gbps speeds are only the beginning
Folks in Brussels for Intel's European research showcase got to get their hands on the company's Light Peak this week, with the first demonstration of the optical cable technology running on a laptop. Outfitted with a 12mm square chip that converts the optical signal into data the machine can read, two separate HD video streams were piped to a nearby TV, which displayed them with the help of a converter box -- a necessary evil until the Light Peak chips are developed for the display side of things. Nach zwei Wochen mit der zweiten Beta des iPhone SDKs können sich Entwickler seit heute die dritte Version herunterladen. iPhone OS 4.0 SDK Beta 3 available for download
Filed under: DeveloperApple just posted its latest iPhone OS 4.0 beta. As with previous beta releases, this new beta update provides firmware for each of the supported devices (namely the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3G, and the 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch).

NetAirus sues Apple over iPhone wireless technology
Virtually the entire design of the iPhone infringes on a patent held by NetAirus Technologies, a new lawsuit alleges. ASUS ships Eee Top ET2010 all-in-one in the UK
And just like that, ASUS' 20-inch Eee Top ET2010 is leaving the docks in the UK. This here machine made its official debut back in late March, but at the time, the company dished no details surrounding price or release. Hong Kong group demands Apple response to poisonings
Apple is still ignoring issues with a Suzhou, China factory involved in producing iPhones, claims a Hong Kong activist group, Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM). While a strike at Wintek subsidiary United Win is said to have got the factory workers an expected bonus, both Apple and Wintek are argued to be sidestepping several other concerns, most notably hexane poisoning. Bell recalls Novatel MiFi 3G routers due to faulty battery
Bell's recently launched version of Novatel's MiFi 2372 3G router has been recalled after being affected by a problem related to its battery. The Canadian carrier has sent letters to owners of the router asking for their return and notifying them that the routers are shut off as of Monday. Im europäischen Hightech-Markt steht eine Trendwende bevor, prognostiziert der Verband Bitkom auf Grundlage von Daten des Marktforschungsinstituts EITO. Light Peak demo shows dual HD video streaming
Intel used a new European research event today to show a working example of its Light Peak transfer standard on a notebook. The Brussels-based test partly reflect demos conducted in the past but showed the portable streaming both the video feed of the screen's desktop and two HD video feeds at the same time. WSJ confirms Apple under preliminary antitrust investigation over iPhone

Microsoft is engaged in a project that would bring the core of its desktop OS to smartphones and other mobile devices, an investigation revealed today. The FTC and Department of Justice are interested in more than just tool restrictions when it comes to possible antitrust charges against Apple, says the Wall Street Journal. Less than a third of Android phones are using the most recent version of the OS, Google has revealed in its latest platform versions data. About 32.4 percent are using Android 2.1, but an even larger 37.2 percent are still using Android 1.5. Netzpolitik.org berichtet von einem neuen Datenleck bei SchülerVZ. Dem Blog wurden nach eigenen Angaben rund 1,6 Millionen aktuelle Datensätze der dort aktiven, meist minderjährigen Mitglieder zugespielt, die den Namen, die Schul-ID und das Profilbild enthalten. Chinese iPhone gets tweaks to support WAPI standard
Apple is indeed adjusting the iPhone to support China's local WAPI networking standard, says IDG News. The State Radio Monitoring Center is noted to have last month approved frequency ranges for a new Apple phone, covering both 3G and Wi-Fi technology. WAPI is mentioned in relation to Wi-Fi, which suggests progress in talks with China Unicom about upgrading the current Chinese iPhone. A WAPI-capable model could still support global Wi-Fi standards.

Filed under: UNIX / BSDI fully expected that my article on mailsend would lead to several "Why don't you use use XYZ instead?" replies, and it did. Suggestions included Ruby, Python, iPhone push notifications, and configuring postfix/sendmail.
But one suggestion was to use msmtp, and that turned out to be the golden nugget.

Sammelklage gegen Second Life eingereicht
Nutzer von Second Life, die virtuellen Grundbesitz in der Online-Welt gekauft haben, haben jetzt eine Sammelklage gegen die Betreiberfirma Linden Lab und deren Gründer Philip Rosedale eingereicht. Der Vorwurf: Die Nutzungsbedingungen für den virtuellen Besitz seien so geändert worden, dass die Besitzrechte quasi aufgelöst und die Second-Life-Bewohner enteignet wurden. Laut Klageschrift vom 15. April sei das Versprechen von "Eigentum" von vorneherein leer gewesen.

Average iPad app price is $1 more than iPhone apps
Filed under: iPadHere's some more interesting stats about app pricing. We've heard pricing average stats before, including that the average app price seems to be hovering right around three dollars. But a firm in the Netherlands has done some more research into current iPad and iPhone app prices, and discovered that while iPhone apps average out at $3.87 (slightly higher than most estimates, but still in that $3 range), iPad apps are actually hitting an average of $4.67, almost a dollar more than iPhone versions.

Apple switching some suppliers for next iPhone
Apple has switched up the suppliers in use for the new iPhone, a report by Taiwan's Economic Daily News paper said today. Foxconn will still put together the finished product, but Apple is now believed using three companies for the touch layer: Chimei Innolux is making 15 percent of the panels while the rest is split between Wintek and TPK. The American company is also leaning more heavily on Taiwan as a whole, as quartz maker TXC and laminate maker Taiflex Scientific are moving from less than a fifth of orders to 45 and 65 percent each.

Mit dem Adobe Lens Profile Creator lassen sich die ganz individuellen Verzerrungen der Objektive einstellen, so dass anschließend eine automatische Korrektur von Fotos vorgenommen werden kann. Iron Man 2 für Touch, iPhone und iPad erschienen
Nahezu zeitgleich mit dem Kinostart hat Gameloft den Action-Fighter Iron Man 2 sowohl in einer Version für den iPod touch und das iPhone wie auch in einer eigenständigen Variante für das iPad veröffentlicht.
Die Hauptfigur, der Milliardär Tony Stark, verwandelt sich bei Bedarf in eine flexible Kampfmaschine und nimmt seinen mit den technisch ebenfalls gut ausgestatteten Feinden auf. Die Handlung spielt in neun verschiedenen 3D-Umgebungen von New York bis Somalia.
Für Kritik sorgt bereits, dass die iPad-Version des in der Standardvariante 5,49 Euro teuren Titels noch einmal knapp die Hälfte mehr kostet: 7,99 Euro will Gameloft für diese, ausschließlich auf dem iPad funktionsfähige Version.

Swisscom wird das iPad nicht verkaufen
Die Swisscom wird das iPad nicht anbieten dürfen, das berichtet Swisscom-Sprecher Olaf Schulze dem Tagesanzeiger. Derweil wollte sich Orange anscheinend gegenüber dem Tagi nach wie vor bedeckt halten und gab dazu kein Kommentar ab. Apple wolle das neue Tablet «vorwiegend in seinen eigenen Läden» anbieten, so die Zeitung. Dazu werden aber auch die Apple-Händler gehören, denn das Apple das iPad in der Schweiz nur über die Retail Stores vertreiben wird, ist sicherlich nicht der Fall, gibt es doch — im Vergleich zu den USA wo die Abdeckung viel höher ist — hierzulande nur drei Apple Stores in Genf und Zürich. Warum die Swisscom die iPads nicht über die zahlreichen Swisscom-Shops verkaufen darf, ist unklar, zumal die Swisscom neben dem iPhone auch iPods vertreibt.
In den USA ist seit Freitag das 3G-Modell verfügbar. Sowohl die Swisscom als auch Orange haben für Ende Mai entsprechende Preispläne für das iPad angekündigt. Apple wird am 12. Mai über den Preis der iPads informieren und Vorbestellungen aufnehmen.

Adobe stellt Objektivkorrektur-Tool vor
Der Photoshop CS5 und die Fotobearbeitungs- und Verwaltungssoftware Lightroom 3 besitzen die Möglichkeit, objektivspezifische Fehler aus den Aufnahmen herauszurechnen. LeapFrog teases future mystery device, inadvertently spills beans in the past

US-Behörden prüfen kartellrechtliche Ermittlungen gegen Apple
Apples Entscheidung, die iPhone-App-Entwicklung mit Hilfe von Adobe Flash zu unterbinden, könnte rechtliche Konsequenzen haben. Das US-Justizministerium und die US-Bundeshandelskommission wollen aufgrund eines möglichen Kartellrechtverstoßes ermitteln.

Update für MacRuby: Version 0.6 ist draußen
Während die meisten Mac Programme in der Programmiersprache Objective-C geschrieben sind, gibt es doch Alternativen, in denen Programme geschrieben werden können. Ruby ist so eine und MacRuby ist eine von Apple mitgetragene Implementierung von Ruby für den Mac. MacRuby unterstützt das CoreFoundation Framework und den Interfacebuilder und ist jetzt in der Version 0.6 verfügbar. Das auf der MacRuby Seite verfügbare kompilierte Paket ist auf Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard lauffähig, mit dem ebenfalls verfügbaren Quellcodes können jedoch auch Mac OS X 10.5 Leopardnutzer selber kompilieren.

Apple may change iPhone SDK to avoid antitrust case
Apple could avoid a possible FTC antitrust investigation by changing the terms of the iPhone 4.0 SDK, insiders said Monday night. ABC Player for iPad updated, 3G streaming is a go
Well that was fast. That ABC Player for iPad update we heard about this morning has already made its way through Apple's approval process and is now available for download. Orientation lock is now, erm, on lock controls are more responsive, but most importantly, (lower bitrate) 3G streaming is now a go. Now, no bus ride will get between you and an island of confusion and smoke monsters.

AT&T's iPad data plans to fetch $25 per 20MB outside of US
AT&T has disclosed its pricing structure for international data plans for the 3G iPad, indicating similar fees currently tied to the iPhone. The costly "Data Global Add-On" options include four levels of usage, ranging from 25MB to 200MB. Customers will have to pay $25/month at the lowest level, while the 200MB plan fetches $200.

Internet Explorer market share falls below 60 percent for first time, according to NetApplications
NetApplications has just released its browser market share stats for the month of April, and there is something notable here: Internet Explorer has fallen to a "historic low" of 59.95 percent market share, losing about 0.69 points since last month. Google's Chrome continues its assault on Safari, reaching a 6.73 percent share (while Safari nabbed 4.72). Of course, Internet Explorer is still so far ahead of the rest of the pack it's hard to make these losses -- however significiant -- into a tragedy of epic proportions story for Microsoft, so we're not going to do that. Keep in mind, as well, that NetApplications is not the only measurement of market share -- and StatCounter, by comparison, currently estimates IE

iPad pulls Fraser Speirs back in to iPhone OS development

Back in September 2008, Fraser announced he was ceasing new iPhone OS development in a widely-linked post titled "App Store: I'm out".

Moto Droid 2 based on Shadow, would keep up with iPhone
Motorola's sequel to the Droid may be major upgrade that arrives just as the new iPhone reaches stores, according to a plethora of details unearthed over the weekend. The device is now thought to be a keyboard-equipped version of the Shadow and, based on new specs posted on Mobile-Review's forums, would be even higher-end than anticipated. On top of a larger 4.3-inch screen, HD video and HDMI output, it would have a new 800MHz TI OMAP processor, an 8-megapixel camera and a PowerVR SGX530 graphics core, much like that believed to be in the iPad's A4 chip.

A tale of two iPad cases: the Dodocase and M-Edge Trip Jacket
If you're like us, one of the first things you wanted to do after getting your iPad was to find a great case for it. Right off the bat, we weren't really that into Apple's offering, which is strangely 90's in its design aesthetic, though it does have a number of decent features if you're looking for a do-it-all scenario and don't have strong feelings on looks. For us, however, the goal was finding something that kept a low profile, shielded the slate from unnecessary grime, and made it easier to deal with. Oh, and we wanted it to look like a book. FCC chair may backtrack on regulating net neutrality
FCC chairman Julius Genachowski may turn on promises to enforce net neutrality in the US, insiders supposedly claimed on Monday. The contacts said the chief may now prefer to leave Internet access in its relatively deregulated state and avoid reclassifying broadband in a way that would 'burden' carriers and scare them away from building out their networks. He would mostly focus on changing administrative policies to give the FCC authority over at least some Internet service.
