New Skype 2.0 app for the iPhone allows voice calls over 3G
Plenty of other VoIP apps have managed to work in this functionality since Apple / AT&T started allowing it last year, but the official Skype app has been a notable holdout. Now, two months after Skype started doing 3G calls on Android with Verizon, there's a 2.0 version of the app for iPhone that brings voice calls over 3G at last. Mobile iPhone calls are free until August, after which you'll need a "mobile subscription." We're testing out the app as we write this and it seems to work about as well any other 3G VoIP app we've tried: passable, not revolutionary.

Hands-on 'confirms' 960x640 iPhone display
The often rumored 960x640 iPhone screen could be validated today through an up-close study of the LCD. Looked at through a microscope, Apple's panel appears to have far smaller pixels than the iPhone 3GS or even the crisp 854x480 screen of the Motorola Droid. At 3.5 inches diagonal, the display SuperiPhone sees for the next iPhone would have a 320 pixels-per-inch density where the Droid's larger screen would measure just 265.

iPhone 4G put under a microscope, 960 x 640 looks like a lock
You've seen it in San Jose, you've seen plenty of it in Vietnam, and now, apparently, you're seeing the iPhone 4G waving at you from the center of Europe, namely the Czech Republic. We haven't been able to corroborate that these fellas do indeed have a legitimate next-gen iPhone in their paws, but it sure looks like it. Custom Safari keyboard shortcuts save my sanity

Japan will 2020 eine Roboter-Mondbasis bauen

Japan plant laut PhysOrg eine mit Sonnenenergie betriebene Mondbasis, von der aus das Sonnensystem erforscht werden soll. Wenn die Pläne der Waseda Universität wahr werden, drehen ab 2015 japanische Roboter auf dem Mond ihre Runden. Die 300 kg schweren Humanoiden werden zuerst Bilder der Mondoberfläche schießen und Gesteinsproben mit einer Rakete zur Erde schicken. Why an iPad and a Mac mini are my computing future

A strange realization dawned on me today: I have already made mental plans to eventually replace two Mac devices I already own with two totally different devices that I don't yet own. Namely, I am planning to replace my MacBook Pro with an iPad and my iMac with a Mac mini.
Replacing the MacBook Pro will happen first, probably sometime later this summer depending on when the "CFO of Household Expenses" (aka my wife) gives me the green light. The MBP has some "issues" like constantly running fans (yes I've tried

Schlankerer Amazon Kindle im August?
Filed under: E-BooksFarbe wird es wohl so bald nicht geben, aber immerhin hat Amazon ihrem Kindle nun vermutlich eine Diät verordnet. Laut Bloomberg will die Firma nämlich im August eine dünnere Version ihres E-Readers rausbringen und diese mit einem schärferen und reaktionsfreudigeren Bildschirm ausstatten. Ob die Verbesserungen die aktuellen Modelle betreffen, oder ob es eine völlig neue Variante geben wird, ist nicht bekannt. So oder so wird es wohl nicht nur bei den Graustufen bleiben, sondern auch ein Touchscreen ist weiterhin nicht in Sicht.

Der Font ist der selbe, aber die Tasten wölben sich mehr nach vorne, ähnlich wie beim CLIQ, was das Tippen erleichtern dürfte. Amazon Kindle slimming down in August?
Color might still be out of the question -- both now and far into the future -- but Amazon seems fit to take out some of the Kindle's fat. Bloomberg has it on word that the company will debut a thinner version of its e-book reader in August, and the new workout regiment will also enhance its screen sharpness and responsiveness. No word on if this'll apply to current models or be an entirely different variant, but in addition to no color, we do hear it lacks a touch screen. Bummer, but if the price is right, we'll bite.

Sony patent application points to dual-screen, dual-use tablet
We never put too much faith in patent applications leading to actual products, but we can't help but get a little bit excited about the possibilities presented by a recent Sony application for a dual-screen tablet. Described specifically as an "electronic book with enhanced features," the device would sport two screens that could take on a different functionality depending on how the device is oriented -- functioning as an e-reader when in portrait mode, and displaying a keyboard on the lower screen when placed on a table, for instance. Bluetooth headset comes with its own iPhone app
Filed under: iPhoneThe Sound ID is a Bluetooth headset with its own iPhone app. EarPrint is an app created just to control the sound of the headset -- you can tweak the audio in and out, change volume, and even find a lost headset directly from the iPhone itself. Not exactly revolutionary (personally, I've never really found a reason to use a Bluetooth headset -- when the actual iPhone didn't work for me, the wired headset works fine), but it's a nice bit of added functionality, especially if you know you'll always be using this headset with an iPhone.

Pandigital Novel e-reader / handheld hits the FCC
Pandigital's already manage to at least pique our interest with its Android-based Novel e-reader / handheld, and it looks like the device has now reached one more milestone on the road to availability -- it's just turned up at the FCC. As you can see, the particular device undergoing testing is black (not white as the final version will apparently be), and the FCC unfortunately doesn't give us much of a look of that bright 7-inch LCD in the on position. It has, however, given us a glimpse of the device's insides, subjected it to the usual battery of tests, and kindly provided us with the device'

WiFi-only Nook gets FCC approval?
If you'll allow us to do a little dot-connecting and hand-waving here, we think we may have just stumbled across a new version of Barnes and Noble's Nook that drops the GSM connection and soldiers on with WiFi alone, matching up nicely with a rumor that spread across the webs not long ago. You see, the Nook's FCC ID is BNRZ100, and this thing that we just found in the FCC's filing system under Barnes and Noble's name has an ID of BNRV100 -- and the test reports are very explicit about the fact that this is for "EBOOK, WLAN, AND USB PORTS WITHOUT WWAN." WWAN, of course, is a fancy way of referring to a cellular connection, so that's that. If this thing can sell for, say, $100 less than the Nook's $260

Neues Apple TV für 99 Dollar?
Die nächste Generation des Apple TV wird wesentlich kleiner ausfallen als das bisherige Modell. Es soll sich auf Stromanschluss und Videoausgang beschränken und iPhone OS als Betriebssystem haben. Das behauptet zumindest Engadget unter Berufung auf eine "sehr Apple-nahe Quelle". Demnach hat die neue Modellreihe einen Apple A4 Prozessor, 16GB Flash-Speicher und kann 1080p (Full-)HD-Videos wiedergeben. Das neue Apple TV wird angeblich nur 99 Dollar kosten.

AT&T prepping MobileProtect insurance program for iPhone?
Shots of some docs over on BGR have us believing that AT&T is on the cusp of launching a program called "MobileProtect," but don't be fooled by the fancy name -- this is basically an Asurion-operated handset insurance plan just like any other, the only real difference being that it's for the iPhone and offered directly by the carrier. Interestingly, it seems that you'll buy the protection through the App Store of all things, automatically billing the credit card that you've got on file with Apple, but you'd better really want the protection because it's going to run $13.99 a month. Oh, and you'll have to pay a $99 deductible to fix an 8GB 3G, scaling up to $199 for a 32GB 3GS. To put that in perspective, that means it'll cost you $367 to replace an insured 32GB 3GS

Lenovo moves Skylight, U1 for Android as iPad has free rein
Lenovo settled questions around its ultra-mobile PCs on Friday by planing a switch in OS for the Skylight smartbook and the IdeaPad U1 detachable tablet. The two will drop Lenovo's in-house Linux OS for Android in what's treated as a reaction to "market conditions and user feedback." Future plans now involve creating an entire ecosystem of Android devices that would include devices like the LePhone.
