News: IDC: Apple third largest smartphone maker in Q1 2010
According to the latest data from research firm IDC, Apple was the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter of 2010. Apple’s quarterly shipments more than doubled year-over-year in the period, from 3.8 million in Q1 2009 to 8.8 million in Q1 2010, an increase of 131% that far outpaced overall market growth of 56.7%. FCC will let the MPAA disable analog outputs, kinda
The Motion Picture Association of America has been trying to get a waiver for the FCC Selectable Output Control (SoC) ban since it went into affect -- the ability to only allow content to flow from a HDCP protected HDMI port. Up until now there has been lots of debate and no action. The bad news is that the MPAA can now use SoC to protect high value content, the good news is the FCC really locked down exactly when it can be used. Basically any movie that's never been released on disc (DVD or Blu-ray) can be protected with SoC for 90 days. Kurz angemerkt sei neben dem ganzen Stress um die iPad-Preise noch die wesentlich erfreulichere Aktion von Gameloft: Der größte Spielehersteller des App Stores veranstaltet anlässlich des zehnjährigen Jubiläums eine Twitter Happy Hour. Das bedeutet, dass zu bestimmten Zeiten eine der vielen Apps für kurze Zeit gratis angeboten wird. Verizon iPhone may come this summer as 3G/4G hybrid
An unusual rumor this afternoon has a Verizon-ready iPhone shipping in the summer. Multiple Verizon staffers and other sources claim the CDMA iPhone would not only be ready in the summer but that it could be a launch device for the availability of Verizon's 4G network. App Store still plagued by spam, says developer
In spite of Apple campaigns to purge dubious titles, the App Store is still affected by large amounts of spam apps, says Marco Arment, the developer of Instapaper. Arment observes that if people search the store for the game Angry Birds, for instance, the results include several poorly-rated guide and cheat apps, which he calls "scams and ripoffs." These also violate name and image trademarks, Arment adds.

iSuppli still expects netbooks to grow despite iPad
Netbook sales are still expected to grow even in the face of the iPad possibly stealing business, a new study by iSuppli said today. Growth will have slowed from the breakneck pace of last year but should still see the mini notebooks grow by 25.5 percent to 209.5 million PCs. The prediction came that the gradual end to the worldwide economic slump wouldn't necessarily end sales of netbooks at the same time.

iPad Wishlist: Separate user accounts

While the iPad offers the same physical hardware for each user, we would all benefit from some system of user accounts, allowing us to segregate our own personal files from each other, just like we do on our desktop systems.

Verizon iPhone chatter is getting harder (than usual) to ignore
Alright, stop us if you've heard this one before -- but seriously, we've noticed an uptick on the tip lines here at Engadget in the last couple weeks that's becoming difficult to ignore. ComScore: Samsung edges out Motorola in US mobile market share
Well, it doesn't look like the news is getting any better for Motorola these days --- ComScore's latest report finds that the company has slipped from its top spot in US market share among mobile OEMs into a virtual tie with Samsung and LG, with Samsung edging out Motorola by just "a fraction of a percent." They're followed by RIM and Nokia, who are now in a tie for a distant fourth place at 8.3%, and Apple, which is said to have a five percent share. More than iPhone in store, iPad seeing even bigger delays?
Apple in an analyst talk hinted that it has more in store in the near future than just the new iPhone. At a meeting with key Apple executives, including retail lead Ron Johnson, COO Peter Oppenheimer and VP Eddy Cue, Barclays Capital researcher Ben Reitzes understood that the company would have significantly more coming in the relatively near future. He did echo the now common belief that the iPhone would lead the way and should be introduced at WWDC, which starts June 7th.

Sprint: Samsung Moment and HTC Hero Android 2.1 updates now coming 'in Q2'
Ouch. Just a few days ago, it seems like a certainty that Sprint would be pushing out Android 2.1 updates to the aging Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, but now a company admin has stepped in to assure us that things aren't nearly that close to go. The full text is pasted in after the break, but the long and short of it is this: the long-awaited 2.1 update is now on track "to be available in Q2." Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2
First, the good news: T-Mobile's HD2 is in stock online and apparently at many corporate-owned retail locations. Now, the bad: the carrier seems to be putting these things on lockdown right now, only offering them to new customers signing up for a fresh contract. This is a tactic T-Mobile has applied in the past, so we're not terribly surprised to see them do it here, too -- but it's still a disappointment, especially considering that the phone has been out for a few weeks now. Nintendo singles out Apple as "enemy of the future"
Nintendo is now targeting Apple as its primary challenger in handheld gaming, a leak from within the gaming giant confirmed on Friday. The Japanese firm's president, Satoru Iwata, is now believed to have shifted Nintendo's attention away from Sony's PSP and towards the iPad, iPhone and iPod as the largest threats. Apple is the "enemy of the future," the Times source said.

Die Veranstaltung findet vom 7.-11.6. in San Francisco statt. CBS to bring iPad parity for web videos by fall
iPad owners should have access to all of the web videos available on CBS.com by the start of the fall TV season, says Anthony Soohoo, the senior VP of CBS Interactive. While the iPad can already view some clips and episodes from the site using HTML5, access is otherwise unequal, with clips coming only gradually. Kindle's social networking-friendly 2.5 update gets an early preview
Amazon may not be rolling out its Kindle 2.5 update until later this month, but the folks at Ars Technica have already managed to get their hands on it, and they've kindly shared a few impressions. WePad renamed WeTab to avoid fight with Apple
The people behind the WePad tablet have announced on Facebook that they have changed the name of the device to WeTab. This is likely to avoid any potential legal battles with Apple, maker of the iPad, to which the WePad has been compared. No other changes are being made to the device itself, which will continue to sport an Intel Atom CPU along with an 11.6-inch display.

WWDC 2010 sells out in only 8 days

All passes for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which runs June 7 - 11 at San Francisco's Moscone Center, were sold as of yesterday. Nimbus 64: the latest in a long line of gorgeous portable N64 mods
For whatever reason, the last great game console to utilize a cartridge over a disc is finding itself in yet another portable form factor, and of course, the Nimbus 64 has been crafted by one of Ben Heck's most loyal followers. Apple's record first quarter gave it an equally dramatic surge in smartphone market share that came at the expense of the BlackBerry, according to new IDC data. Shipping 8.75 million iPhones was enough to see its share jump from just 10.9 percent a year ago to 16.1 percent today. Apple also saw the largest growth in sheer units as it moved 131.6 percent more phones year over year.

Prices emerge for UK, Euro iPads, Orange UK 3G support
Apple has confirmed pricing for the UK versions of the iPad, launching on May 28th. The base 16GB Wi-Fi model will cost £429, with VAT included. Prices rise to £499 for 32GB, and £599 for 64GB. A £100 premium applies to each capacity when choosing a 3G edition of the tablet.

Portable Sound Laboratories has an interesting solution that will protect your electronics and give you good sound at the same time. It's called the iMainGo2, and it's a 9 oz., clamshell zippered case that will hold an iPhone or an iPod touch. There's a headphone compatible 3.5mm plug that connects the case to your device. The unit runs on 4 AAA batteries for about 30 hours. We have one on loan for review, and I've been testing it around the house for a few days.

International iBookstores to launch in tandem with iPads
Most or all countries getting the iPad on May 28th will also get iBooks and access to the iBookstore at the same time, Apple has disclosed. Nokia sues Apple again, says the iPad 3G infringes five patents
Looks like settlement negotiations in the various Nokia / Apple patent lawsuits aren't going too well -- Espoo's just hit Cupertino with a second federal patent lawsuit, this time alleging the iPad 3G and iPhone infringe five patents related to "enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices." Interestingly, Nokia's filed this one in the Western District of Wisconsin, a so-called "rocket docket" that's well-known for bringing patent cases to settlement or trial in just over a year. WePad renamed WeTab to 'clearly differentiate' itself
The WePad has already had to cross a few hurdles and overcome some skepticism on it's way to a release, and it's now undergone another big change -- it's just been renamed the "WeTab." Deutschland-Start: Apple legt iPad-Verkaufsstart auf den 28.5
Per Pressemitteilung hat Apple heute den Verkaufsstart des iPads in Deutschland bekanntgegeben. Am 28. Mai, soll das Tablet sowohl hierzulande als auch in acht weiteren Ländern (Australien, Kanada, Frankreich, Italien, Japan, Spanien, Schweiz und England ) angeboten werden. Noch stehen die Deutschland-Preise aus, mit Blick auf die bereits bekanntgegebenen Verkaufspreise in Spanien dürfte sich das 16GB iPad jedoch im Bereich von 480 ansiedeln, die 16GB UMTS-Version bei 580. Opera rät Adobe zum Umstieg auf offene Webstandards
Browserhersteller Opera hat sich in die Diskussion um Flash eingeschaltet und Adobe nahegelegt, künftig verstärkt auf offene Webstandards zu setzen. Nokia stepped up its pressure on Apple again today by suing the company a second time over allegedly violating patents. The complaint accuses Apple's 3G-capable iPad and iPhone of infringing on five more patents relating to sending data and speech, using location data in apps, and advanced antenna designs. Second Mac OS X 10.6.4 beta dwells on OpenGL, app glitches
Apple has reportedly released a second developer beta of Mac OS X 10.6.4, the upcoming update for Snow Leopard. The emphasis in the new code, build 10F46, is said to be on fixing compatibility problems with OpenGL-based apps, as well as various errors linked to first- and third-party software. Some of these include trouble launching Adobe CS3 titles such as Photoshop and Illustrator, and graphics bugs that appear when watching video in DVD Player or using iPhoto's fullscreen mode.

Toshiba plans to claim the crown of the world's thinnest and lightest 13-inch notebooks, a leak may have revealed today. The system would use a full-power Core i7 processor but would use exotic cooling and construction to get as thin and light as Apple's MacBook Air or Dell's Adamo XPS. It would use a system known as "Mountain Blaze" to lower heat and would be made out of a unibody, honeycomb structure that would keep it stiff even at its thin dimensions.

Higher Ed choosing sides on iPad use

Chester, the CIO of Pepperdine University, discussed the ongoing controversy of how higher education has and should deal with the encroachment of the iPad on campuses throughout the country. Using information gleaned from the Educause CIO listserv, he found two camps being formed, and a bit of misinformation.

Wer im Ausland nicht mit seinen Sprachkenntnissen zurecht kommt und aus der Speisekarte (oder ähnlichem) einfach nicht rauslesen kann, was der Magen (oder ähnliches) begehrt, für den übersetzt Google Goggles jetzt Schrift in aufgenommenen Bildern in das Google Translate Kauderwelsch, dessen man zumindest halbwegs mächtig ist. Ricoh GXR gets 28-300mm lens module with HD video
Ricoh on Friday added its first real telephoto-ranged lens to its unusual GXR camera. The P10 includes both a 28-300mm, f3.5-5.6 lens and a 10-megapixel, back-illuminated CMOS sensor that should cover longer ranges than the existing kits. Samsung releases Bada SDK for developers who want to ride the Wave
Samsung still hasn't managed to get the Wave or any other Bada handset to market yet, but it's doing the right thing by offering developers the software development kit first. Granted, with a planned June release Samsung isn't managing the same sort of massive lead-time that Microsoft has with its Windows Phone 7 SDK, but a few weeks of pressure-free coding are better than none. Adobe CS5 Trial auf deutsch verfügbar
Adobe hat die Testversion von der neuen Creative Suite 5 auf deutsch veröffentlicht. Nicht nur die einzelnen Programme können bei Adobe herunter geladen werden, auch die Alles umfassende Master Suite steht ab heute in lokalisierter Form bereit. Letztere ist jedoch rund 10 Gigabyte groß und der Download nimmt je nach Internetverbindung doch eine recht lange Zeit in Anspruch. Intel's Westmere-EX to bring 12 cores, 32nm to servers
Intel is planning a server-oriented version of its 32 nanometer Xeons that would be the company's first chip of any kind with more than eight cores, Intel said in a webcast late Thursday. Currently codenamed Westmere-EX, it would supplant the eight-core, 45nm Xeon 7500 and is likely to pack 12 cores without increasing the power consumption over the current chip. Intel überarbeitet neuen Kühler des Core i7-980X
Mit dem Core i7-980X Extreme Edition (ComputerBase-Test) als ersten Sechs-Kern-Prozessor für den Desktop hat Intel auch einen neuen Kühler vorgestellt. Vodafone UK to charge for phone data past 500MB
Vodafone UK on its forum has sent notice that it will start charging for data over 500MB on its network. Starting June 1st, the carrier will still supply 500MB of data with any bundle plan worth £25 or higher but will pay an extra £5 for every 500MB they use over that threshold. It had previously put a 500MB "fair use" ceiling on these plans but didn't charge for it or throttle use unless it created a significant problem on the network.

Nacktbilder von iPhone-Nutzern im Internet
Es hätte alles so schön sein können: Das iPhone-Zusatzprogramm (App) Quip für 99 Cent versprach den unbegrenzten Versand von Handy-Fotos (MMS) über einen eigenen Dienst. Ein faires Angebot, schließlich kostet normalerweise jede einzelne Nachricht aus Foto und Text 39 Cent. Wird der umlaufende Reißverschluss geschlossen, so ist das Notebook in der handgefertigten Lederhülle erstklassig aufbewahrt. Die festen Buchdeckel schützen die Ober- und Unterseite und bewahren das Notebook durch eine rundum gut einen Zentimeter überstehende Kante auch vor Beschädigung durch seitliche Stöße.

Photoshop CS5: Doch nicht so toll?
Das neue Profi-Bildbearbeitungsprogramm Photoshop CS5 gibt nur bedingt ein gutes Bild ab. „Wer die Vorgängerversionen CS3 oder CS4 hat, kann auf CS5 auch verzichten", urteilt der Informationsdienst „Photoshop inside" (www.photoshop-inside.de) aus dem Fachverlag für Computerwissen. iPhone 3G läuft jetzt auch mit Android

Darauf haben wir wirklich gewartet. Seitdem David Wang vor knapp zwei Wochen schon Android auf einem 2G installiert hatte, ist jetzt das iPhone 3G dran. Der Sound macht scheinbar noch ein paar Zicken, aber bis er das fertig hat, sind vielleicht auch die Installationen zum runterladen bereit. Natürlich nach wie vor im Dual-Boot. Jetzt aber erst mal zum neuen Video nach dem Break, denn schliesslich wagt sich da ja niemand dran, wenn er nicht das Gefühl hat, das geht wirklich.

In Österreich werden die Telefonzellen zu Elektroautotanken

In Wien gibt es jetzt die erste Telefonzelle, die nebenher auch Elektroautos aufladen kann. Wie? Keine Handys? Telekom Austria hat vor dieses Jahr noch weitere 30 Telefonzellen umzurüsten. Danach sollen dann die 700 multimediafähigen Telefonzellen folgen, später vielleicht noch der Rest der 13.500 Zellen mit denen man sonst nicht mehr viel Anfangen kann, vorausgesetzt sie haben einen Parkplatz. iPad-Case mit integrierter Tastatur
Mit einem nett anzusehenden Mockup-Video (unten auch eingebettet) präsentiert der Hersteller Clamcase sein für den Herbst angekündigtes, gleichnamiges multifunktionales iPad-Case. Neben der Funktion als Schutzhülle und Ständer soll das iPad darin dank einer in das Case integrierten Bluetooth-Tastatur zum Mini-Notebook mutieren.

Knapp die Hälfte der iPad-Käufer wollen Notebook-Ersatz
Bei der Vorstellung des iPad verwies Steve Jobs auf eine Lücke zwischen Notebooks und iPhone, die durch das iPad geschlossen werden sollte. Eine Umfrage von Alphawise, am Donnerstag bei den Analyse-Experten von Morgan Stanley vorgestellt, verweist jedoch auf Kannibalismus-Effekte des iPads. Rund 44 Prozent aller Käufer sähen das iPad als vollwertigen Ersatz eines Notebooks und haben sich das iPad anstelle eines Notebooks angeschafft. Die Ausmaße dieses Kannibalismus-Effekts lasseb sich jedoch erst genau umreißen, wenn feststeht, wieviele Kunden mit ihrer Entscheidung glücklich wurden. Fanta 4 Flipper für iPod touch und iPhone
Ganz neu im App Store eingetroffen ist der Fanta 4 Flipper (2,99 Euro), ein klassisches Flipperspiel mit Thema und Musik der deutschen HipHop-Band. Das Spiel wurde grafisch sehr nett umgesetzt und kommt mit einer ausführlichen Video-Spielanleitung durch die Bandmitglieder. Zudem lassen sich aus dem Spiel heraus aktuelle News zur Band abrufen.
Während dem Spiel wandert der Bildausschnitt mit der Kugel mit, daran gewöhnt man sich eigentlich schnell und man behält auf diese Weise auch ganz gut den Überblick. Der Flipper ist mit netten Effekten (z.B. Multiball) und gutem Gamesound ausgestattet. Als etwas störend empfinden wir, dass die Flipper leicht verzögert auf ein Antippen des Bildschirms reagieren.

Study finds commercial-skipping DVRs don't affect purchases, 'TiVo effect' may not exist
Two years back, consumer research told us the vast majority of DVR users skipped commercials; now, statisticians at Duke University say that's not the case. More importantly, even those who do hit that oh-so-tempting skip button aren't necessarily spending less on advertised products as a result. Pulling data from over 1,200 TiVo boxes over the course of three years, Professor Carl Mela and colleagues found that a staggering 95 percent of television was watched live instead of recorded, giving viewers no opportunity to skip, and even when there was an opportunity, users took it only 6.5 percent of the time.

Back on April 19th, I was pretty happy with Penultimate, a digital notepad for iPad. I mentioned in my review that I'd like to be able to type into the notebooks instead of just writing handwritten notes, but I was happy with the ability to have different notebooks. All in all, Penultimate seemed to be a pretty good notetaking app.

WWDC ausverkauft / Android OS auf iPhone 3G
Die Ticket-Anzeige für die diesjährigen WWDC-Veranstaltung von Apple Anfang Juni in San Francisco hat soeben ihren Status auf “Sold Out” korrigiert. Der Vorverkauf für die “The center of the app universe”-Konferenz startete vor 9 Tagen am 28. April.

"Independent" report downplays school's spying misconduct
A third-party investigation has largely downplayed accusations of misconduct aimed at a Philadelphia school district that spied on students using MacBooks provided on loan. Although the investigation has been labeled as "independent," it was completed by a law firm, Ballard Spahr, which was directly hired by the Lower Merion School District.

Android may have private APIs like iPhone
Google's recently hired Android Developer Advocate Tim Bray stirred controversy today in a warning to developers that suggests Android has private APIs. Despite Android head Andy Rubin claiming that Google is more open than Apple and publishes all its developer standards, Bray has told developers that certain resources were developed only for Google's own use. Some of the Content Providers feeding data to apps should be avoided altogether and could break in the future, he said.

Shocker: CEA's spending report finds Americans buying more technology
Guess what kiddos? That recession that harshed your mellow all last year is officially over and done with according to the Consumer Electronics Association, anyway. Based on a new report put out today by the CEA (you know, that organization that sets up CES each year?), the average US household spent $1,380 on consumer electronics over the past dozen months, which represents an increase of $151 from last year. The report also found that the average household spent 12 percent more on CE devices over the past year, and individual consumer spending shot up 10 percent year-over-year. Warner: no incentive for HBO to make iPad app, device deals
Time Warner doesn't necessarily have any reason to launch an HBO app for the iPad or any other device, company CEO Jeff Bewkes said when discussing the company's latest financial results. The media firm could "easily" make an app to stream the cable channel's shows to Apple's tablet but doesn't have any motivation to do so. Since it goes over the web, the online HBO Go service doesn't have to be tied to a particular platform and gives Time Warner control over how the service works for any device, not just the iPad.
