Verizon chief talks LTE iPhones, hates on rival: "I don't know what Sprint thinks it is"
In a refreshingly open, straight-shooting interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon boss Ivan Seidenberg -- who has a reputation for being candid -- talked about virtually every hot-button topic facing its business today, starting with the love-hate relationship it shares with fellow partner Vodafone in its Verizon Wireless joint venture. Seidenberg reiterated that he'd love to take Vodafone's 45 percent off its hands, but admits that the prospects are unlikely in the short term; he goes on to say, though, that he's convinced they'll be willing to dump it once the wireless industry cools off. Cellphone sales may drop by 20% in 2009
Recent In-Stat research suggests global handset sales and subscriptions will be significantly lower in 2009 compared the previous year due to the economic downturn. TWC freezes expansion of metering trials

Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal iPhone App just hit the iTunes Store. We've downloaded and are looking through it as we type. It isn't full of content yet but we're sure more will stream in as time goes on. We even watched Walt Mossberg's MobileMe re-review in the video section. While we generally like the NYTimes content better, the WSJ.app does a lot of things better than their iPhone app (which came out almost a year ago). The 'photo flipping' of articles is great and the video works really well as well. A very positive, polished first experience.
If you are a fan of the Journal, this app will make a great addition to your reading collection. (and the articles are free!)

DoJ asks to oversee Microsoft for 18 more months
The US Department of Justice and individual attorneys general today filed an official motion (registration required) asking Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to further extend her monitoring of Microsoft's compliance with a 2002 antitrust ruling. Swedish museum puts Pirate Bay server on display
The Pirate Bay itself may now be entangled in a high-profile court battle, but it looks like Sweden's National Museum of Science and Technology figured that was the perfect time to grab a piece of the site's controversial history and put it on display. While it may not look like much, that server above is in fact one of the original servers that was used by the Pirate Bay and confiscated by the police in January, 2008. Despite that storied past, however, the museum was apparently able to acquire the server for just 2,000 kronor (or about $240), and it's now found a home alongside a 1970s-era cassette tape recorder in an exhibit that's intended to "stimulate interest in finding out more about the area of intellectual property rights" -

Time Warner Cable scraps broadband capping plan in Rochester, NY
It's already delayed its controversial broadband capping plan in a number of markets, and it looks like Time Warner Cable has now gone one big step further in Rochester, New York (one of the initial test markets), where it has reportedly scrapped the new tiered pricing plan altogether. Giant mechanized rhinoceros beetle makes its Japanese TV debut
While it's certainly not all that uncommon to see giant robots wandering the streets of Japan, it looks like even the jaded folks on the Japanese TV show "Nanikore Chin Hakkei" were impressed by this massive beetle robot built by an Ibaraki man, who apparently spent a full 11 years toiling away at it. Canadian killed by unsecured laptop during car wreck
Here's a tip folks: don't get in car wrecks. If you someday find such a situation unavoidable, however, here's another: keep that laptop of yours in the trunk, or at least in a case tucked down behind the driver's seat. Mounties in British Columbia are reporting that a Canadian woman who perished in a car accident last month was actually killed by the laptop within her vehicle. As the story goes, the 25 year old's vehicle was struck by a tow truck, flinging her laptop into the rear of her head. A coroner pegged the cause of death as a "blunt force trauma," and investigators believe that the whole thing was survivable had the machine not been in the back seat. Psystar Open(3) manages to ship, gets unboxed by lucky customer
Take a good look at the box above, folks -- it just might be the first, the last and the only Open(3) you ever see. Psystar's latest Mac clone, which was launched right around a month ago, has miraculously managed to ship out (or, at least one has). Samsung comes clean with self-encrypting SSDs
It seems that Dell jumped the gun a wee bit by shedding some light on Samsung's forthcoming self-encrypting SSDs, but now Sammy is providing us with all the missing details er, most of them, anyway. In conjunction with Wave Systems, Samsung is launching what it calls an industry first with its new line of solid state drives. Said devices are able to automatically encrypt information as it's saved to the drive, and they each come bundled with Wave's EMBASSY management software. At least initially, these super secure SSDs will ship in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB flavors, and while we're told that the whole lot is available now "through at least one major OEM," there's no specific mention of price. We just tore the packaging off of Acer's new AspireRevo nettop and dove into its Ion-powered goodness. Developer Orbicule has released an iPhone version of Undercover, its formerly Mac-only security software. We had a chance to sit down and play with Verizon's next iteration of its Hub (already guys?), and while it wasn't a mind-blowing affair, they do seem to making some moves in the right direction. Nokia's profits drop 90% in Q1 2009
So, there's good news and bad news here, and we're opting to go against tradition by dishing out the positive first. Nokia just pushed out its Q1 2009 results, and while many firms have been struggling to stay afloat, at least it managed to turn a profit of €122 million ($160 million). That said, it's still looking at a staggering 90 percent drop in profits compared to its first quarter of 2008, where it raked in a mind-boggling €1.222 billion ($1.6 billion). Not surprisingly, sales were also down 27 percent to €9.28 billion ($12.2 billion) from €12.7 billion ($16.7 billion). Interpol bekommt Microsofts Schnüffel-USB-Stick Cofee
Interpol hat ein Abkommen mit Microsoft über die Nutzung der Schnüffelsoftware Cofee (Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor) unterzeichnet. Das gab die supranationale Polizeiorganisation gestern in einer Presseerklärung bekannt. Gemäß dem Abkommen wird Microsoft die Software den Polizeibehörden der 187 Interpool-Mitgliedsstaaten zur Verfügung stellen.

The example they use is flicking the phone to step through contacts. The iPhone already uses such an interface for "shake to shuffle" music as well as apps like Urban Spoon use this type of gesture to pick a random restaurant in the area.

According to a rumor found in the latest issue of Game Informer, Harmonix is doing just that: including multiple-microphone support for players to harmonize on the tracks. Not much else is given, but a NeoGAF forum poster who last week claimed to have played an early version adds that three mics were being used -- one for each instrument -- and there was also a new harmony trainer mode to ensure your vocal talents were up to snuff. dLAN TV Sat - Linux- und MacOS-X-Treiber von Devolo

Analyst zählt Rechner-, iPhone- und iPod-Absatz in Apple-Ladengeschäften
Gene Munster von Piper Jaffray hat erneut eine Studie zu den Hardwareverkäufen in Apples Retail Stores vorgelegt. Darin kommt er zu dem Schluss, dass der Hersteller aus Cupertino derzeit nicht sonderlich unter dem wirtschaftlichen Jammertal zu leiden hat. Google beschleunigt Anzeige von Suchergebnissen
Google hat ein neues Verfahren entwickelt, um Suchergebnisse schneller darzustellen. Dafür verwendet der Suchanbieter nach Angaben des Google-Sprechers Eitan Bencuya Ajax und JavaScript statt HTML, um die Resultate anzuzeigen. Der Geschwindigkeitsvorteil ergibt sich vor allem ab der zweiten Suchanfrage, da dann nur noch die einzelnen Resultate und nicht mehr die gesamte Ergebnisseite geladen wird.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 nearly ready
Apple has accelerated considerably the rate the beta versions of Mac OS X 10.5.7. They now follow one another every 3 or 4 days, each time fixing more problems. One seems very close to the final version and Apple wants obviously to release it as quickly as possible. This eagerness may be related to the arrival of the first iMac equipped with Radeon HD 4750 that would need the ATI drivers.
If Apple does not shift from its normal behaviour, it could be released Monday evening with certainly of a following security update for Mac OS X 10.4.

Gestern in den Abendstunden tauchten die ersten Filme im deutschen iTunes Store auf, allerdings noch ohne Beschreibungsseiten und häufig auftretenden Fehlermeldungen. Dann konnte man praktisch dabei zusehen, wie das Angebot immer weiter wuchs und die Fehlermeldungen weniger wurden. Inzwischen funktionieren sogar die Informationsseiten zu den einzelnen Filmen, auch das Leihangebot wurde implementiert. So kostet es zum Beispiel 2,99 Euro,

Gartner: Weltweiter PC-Absatz sinkt um 6,5 Prozent
Laut Gartner hat die PC-Industrie im ersten Quartal 2009 weltweit 67,2 Millionen Computer verkauft, 6,5 Prozent weniger als im ersten Vierteljahr 2008. AT&T and Apple to Renegotiate their Exclusive Agreement
If Orange's exclusive partnership agreement in France has been broken by the law, AT&T is still the only carrier supporting the iPhone in USA. AT&T is willing to extend the current contract ending in 2010 to at least end of 2011.Discussion will most likely be hard. Indeed, Apple does not need to have exclusive deals to recover some of the financial investment for developing the iPhone. The mobile phone is now a true success everywhere it is available, and carriers are supporting it via the usual long-term subscription plan. So, Apple might be rather more interested into further increasing the number of carriers for the iPhone in a country, than being chained to a single one. Of course, AT&T does not want to drop this perfect tool for attracting new customers, and the forthcoming new iPhone to be released in June might demonstrate once more this effect. AT&T might have to sign a big check to Apple to preserve its exclusive partnership.

New Firmware Update for OCZ SSD Vertex
OCZ released a firmware update for its SSD belonging to the Vertex series. Once more you will have to run Windows to apply this patch, and you will need to have your data backup on another volume as the procedure entirely erase the SSD. This update should:
improve future firmware updates (so be prepared for new ones)
improve management of defective blocks
improve compatibility with sleeping mode on Mac Pro, a proof that the company is seriously considering the Mac market
bring support for TRIM.
The latest point is the most important one. Currently, OS are using SSD as HD, and they have been optimized for such disc-based storage unit. Samsung's 1080p-blasting A800B and A900 projectors unveiled, plus six more
Good ole' Sammy's announced an octuplet of new projectors, and while we'd like to say they're all special in their own little way, two models definitely catch our eye more. The A800B DLP boasts a 1080p output, 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 1000 ANSI lumens, two HDMI ports, and a variety of other input options. The luxury doesn't come cheap, of course: retail price is $10,000. The other full HD model is the A900, and although we're lighter on details with this one, we do know it's packing 1000 ANSI lumens, only one HDMI port, an impressive 12,000:1 contrast ratio, and what we can only assume is price tag of equal magnitude. HP Pavilion dv3 taken for a spin, comes back unfit but well-performing
Now that HP's Pavilion dv2 has had time to shine, it's dv3's turn to take the spotlight. The gang at NotebookReview have put their hands all over the 13.3-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo-equipped laptop, and despite good performance, negative points go to the build quality, which was said to be worse than other Pavilion models.
