NICT's gCubik six-screened touchscreen cube in action
In theory, NICT's gCubik sounds like a pretty wild idea -- wrap a box in six screens, simulate a 3D object inside, make it touchscreen interactive. In reality, the screens are perhaps just a bit too low-resolution to really pull off any sort of illusion, but it's certainly a start. The 3.5-inch VGA screens that surround the cube are themselves 3D, with 18 x 18 different viewable angles, drastically reducing the quantity of pixels available to each view. NICT is looking at full HD or higher resolution displays to refine the idea, and while users can currently touch the screens to move the object "within," they're hoping to add further interaction like cube-shakage further down the l

Analyst: Feb. Mac sales could be down 12%
Although Apple recently launched several updated computer systems, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster expects February Mac sales to show a decline of up to 12 percent year-over-year. If true, sales have continued to slide from the observation of a 6 percent drop for January. In contrast, the company saw a 60 percent year-over-year gain last February following the MacBook Air launch.

A-DATA's SATAII SSD 300 Plus promises quicker reads, writes
It's hard to say just how legitimate these claims are at the moment, but A-DATA seems pretty jazzed about its newest SSD. While not nearly as capacious as the outfit's recently unveiled 512GB XPG SSD, the next-generation SATAII SSD 300 Plus supposedly increases performance of read speeds by up to 40 percent while boosting write speeds by around 60 percent when compared to a "regular SSD." According to A-DATA, this here drive utilizes a special mobile SDRAM module to hit a sustained read rate of 250MB/sec and write rate of 160MB/sec, and all this high-flying performance comes to you in 32, 64, 128 and 256GB flavors. iTunes-Geschenkgutscheine geknackt
Offensichtlich ist es erstmals gelungen, den Algorithmus der iTunes-Geschenkgutscheine zu knacken. So berichtet Appleinsider über in China aufgetauchte Gutscheine welche nur wenige Dollar kosten, aber Gutscheinwerte von z.B. 200 US-Dollar aufweisen. Der Crack des iTunes Algorithmus ist ebenfalls zu erwerben und macht es theoretisch möglich beliebig viele iTunes-Geschenkgutscheine herzustellen.
Bis dato steht eine Stellungsnahme von Apple aus, es ist aber davon auszugehen das Apple den Algorithmus bald anpassen wird, um den Schutz der iTunes Gutscheine wieder herzustellen.

Issue: Loose headphone jacks in MacBooks
Many people are having problems keeping headphones connected on the unibody 13-inch MacBook and 15-inch MacBook Pro. It seems as though a connected plug will easily slip out of the jack enough to lose the connection, causing the audio to switch from "Headphones" to "Internal Speaker."

Uh, Oh - looks like iTunes Gift Cards have been hacked
Some bad news for Apple. It seems the algorithm used to make iTunes Gift Cards has been hacked by Chinese terrorists thieves and are being sold for pennies on the dollar over the Internets. Frankly, why give your money to a thief when you can just as easily be a thief yourself (eliminate the middleman!) and get your music from Bittorent. Not that that is right either.but Apple is going to be left with the bill from the record companies over all of this lost revenue for those who use fake gift cards.
Can Apple fix this without screwing everyone with real gift cards over as well? We shall see.

A-DATA preps extra-fast 300 Plus SSDs
A-DATA has rolled out a high-speed solid-state drive line intended as a drop-in update for notebooks. The 300 Plus series takes advantage of a new memory controller to maintain constant 250MB per second read speeds as well as 160MB per second while writing data. BeBook als Alternative zu Amazons eBook-Reader
Während in den USA die zweite Generation des Kindle in aller Munde ist, wird es wohl noch ein Weilchen dauern bis Amazon sein eBook-Lesegerät hierzulande anbietet.
Doch es gibt durchaus Alternativen, die ebenfalls auf lesefreundliche E-Ink-Displays setzen, sich aber fremden Formaten gegenüber zum Teil sogar deutlich aufgeschlossener zeigen. Und dies ist, nachdem wir hier nicht wie die Amerikaner auf ein geballtes eBook-Angebot à la Amazon zugreifen können, wichtiger als man vielleicht denkt.

Opera-CEO greift Microsoft wegen IE8-Deaktivierung an

Palm boosts share offering to get $83.9m
Palm today said it would up the number of shares involved in its stock resale plan from 18.5 million shares to just over 23.1 million. Each share will have a going price of $6 and should boost Palm's revenue in the deal from its original $49 million to $83.9 million. A group of Chinese hackers has succeeded in cracking Apple’s algorithm for encoding iTunes Store Gift Certificates, and are creating discounted certificates using a key generator. USB 3 test spec due in June, final in 2010
Agilent at a conference in Tokyo today said that a test-ready version of the USB 3.0 spec will be ready in June. The standard gives computer and component makers a reference point for building hardware and should let these companies build parts that can be checked for compatibility in the second half of the year. SDRAM-Patentstreit: Hynix zahlt Rambus 397 Millionen Dollar

Microsoft will erneut Kooperationsgespräche mit Yahoo führen
In einem Interview mit der britischen Times hat Microsoft-COO Kevin Turner geäußert, er wolle Yahoo Gespräche über ein Suchabkommen anbieten. Das Angebot richtet Turner an die neue Yahoo-Chefin Carol Bartz und auch den Aufsichtsrat des Unternehmens. Allerdings müsse die Zusammenarbeit für beide Unternehmen sinnvoll sein, so Turner. Mac-User die gleichzeitig auch Spiele-Fans sind, werden von den PC-Enthusiasten gern ein wenig belächelt. AMD und Seagate zeigen SATA-III-Festplatte
Der aktuelle SATA-II-Standard bringt theoretisch eine Leistung von drei Gb/s über das Datenkabel, während sich der Vorgänger mit 1,5 Gb/s zufrieden geben muss. Rapper Eminem, im Jahr noch 2005 erfolgreich in einem Rechtsstreit gegen Apple und den iTunes Store, musste diesmal klein beigeben. EU-Ausschuss beschließt Preisgrenze für Auslands-SMS
Der Industrieausschuss des Europäischen Parlaments hat sich nach Angaben der EU-Kommission in Straßburg für eine Absenkung der SMS-Roaming-Gebühren ausgesprochen. Demnach soll eine Textnachricht im EU-Ausland künftig maximal 13 Cent inklusive Mehrwertsteuer kosten. iPhone-Apps: FairPlay-DRM versagt, Entwickler rüsten auf
Der erste Browser für das iPhone, der von Apple offiziell freigegeben und in den App Store aufgenommen wurde, ist der Full Screen Web Browser (iTunes-Link) von Ben Chatelain. 66.000 heruntergeladene Apps sind ein sehr großer Erfolg – aber die Negativseite des Erfolges ließ nicht lange auf sich warten. Schnell erschienen die ersten Cracks der App, die von Apples Rechtemanagement FairPlay befreit worden waren. Yesterday's Apple netbook rumor courtesy of the Commercial Times / DigiTimes combo just received a boost of credibility by sources (presumably independent) speaking to the Dow Jones Newswire. Citing "two people close to the situation," the DJ pretty much regurgitates the same info: Wintek will provide the touch-screen display which Quanta will manufacture into an Apple netbook as early as the second half of the year. Mac mini: sehr hohe Nachfrage
Der erste Ansturm auf die neuen Mac-mini-Modelle im Apple Store muss sehr hoch gewesen sein, wie unter anderem hardmac.com berichtet. Einem französischen Kunden, der das 2.26-GHz-Modell unmittelbar nach der Vorstellung der neuen Geräte orderte, wurde mitgeteilt, dass die Nachfrage das Angebot übersteigen und sich die Lieferzeit um eine Woche verzögern würde. Dabei ist natürlich nicht zu vergessen, dass es sich bei der 2.26-GHz-Variante um eine BTO-Option handelt, die von sich aus eine längere Lieferzeit hat.

iData - Datenübertragung per Kopfhörerbuchse
Ein wenig absurd ist es schon, dass ein per USB an den Mac angeschlossenes iPhone trotzdem auf WiFi angewiesen ist, um diverse Programme mit Daten zu versorgen. iPhone-Anwendungen dürfen den Dock-Connector nicht direkt ansprechen, so bleibt nur WiFi, der Umweg über einen FTP-Server - oder die Kopfhörerbuchse.

Apple Touch Netbooks Q3 2009?
When will "we are watching this space very closely" turn into "here's our super thin touch-based NetBook"? Digitimes says that Quanta computer will be making a netbook product for Apple and shipping it in Q3, this year. It goes on to say that these Netbooks will have touch panels.
Taiwan-based Wintek will supply touch panels for Apple's new netbook, and shipments will start in the third quarter this year, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. Wintek revealed that it is currently working with Apple to develop some new products, but it said it does not know what applications the new products are for. Apple pushing boundaries in advertising technology
We all know that Apple innovates technology hardware and software like few other, if any, firms in the world. Together with their Advertising firm, Chiat Day, they've also shown an affinity for pushing advertising and specifically banner advertising as well. HP rolls out Compaq CQ2000M nettop for Europe
HP's mini-Q nettop first turned up in Taiwan way back in November, but it looks to finally be making its way around the world, and it's now shown itself in Europe in the form of the Compaq CQ2000M. There doesn't appear to be any significant changes beyond the slight name change, however, with the nettop still packing the standard issue 1.6GHz Atom Z230 processor, 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB), a 160GB hard drive, Intel GMA950 graphics and, of particular note, a dual-layer DVD burner. LaCie has introduced several new storage products designed by 5.5 Designers, including the iamaKey, itsaKey and PassKey. The iamaKey and itsaKey are both key-shaped USB flash drives, featuring metal construction and capacities up to 8GB. Philips Master LED light bulb set for US release in July
Philips has been hitting us with some out-there lighting concepts lately, but the company's Master LED light bulb is actually already on sale in Europe and is set to brighten up Stateside lives around July. Google issues first Android Dev Phone 1 update, clarifies paid app situation
Android Dev Phone 1 owners are pretty much expected to handle their own business when it comes to firmware updates, but those of you who like to kick it official take note: El Goog's just released Android 1.1 for for its totally unlocked version of the G1. Most of the fixes are to do with POP3 accounts, and paid apps are now supported with a catch: you won't be able to access any paid apps that use Android's hilariously weak-ass copy protection features, because the ADP1 comes rooted out of the box and thus able to read / write the folder protected apps are stored in. Okay, so we'll go ahead and crush a few dreams up front -- there's nothing here that proves this isn't some funky KIRF iPhone or just an ad hoc or jailbroken app making things look completely funkadelic.
