Time Warner DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade to only involve NYC
At an earnings conference on Wednesday, Time Warner Cable COO Landel Hobbs said that the cable provider will begin using the newer, multi-channel DOCSIS 3.0 standard to provide Internet and data access to homes and businesses this summer, although it will be limited to New York City only. iPod nano GPS hack ensures that you and your MP3s make it home safely
We've seen iPod hacks run the gamut, from the useful to the just plain absurd, but no matter how rough around the edges such a project may seem, we always get a kick out of the ingenuity and hard work involved. Today's DIY wonder comes from a cat named Benjamin Kokes, who's using his engineering chops to put together a GPS peripheral for the iPod nano. Oh sure, you could already get your paws around the Archos 2 flash-based PMP if you really, really wanted to, but we're still thrilled to see the company come clean and begin offering it up on its own website. Apple today landed another key employee with word that Microsoft's senior Xbox strategy director Richard Teversham has left his company to join the Mac creator. Peggle for iPhone date switched to May 12th

Fujitsu gets official with M2010 netbook, Engadget Chinese goes hands-on
We already caught sight of Fujitsu's new 10.1-inch LOOX M netbook in Japan earlier this month, and it looks like the company has now gotten official with the seemingly identical M2010 model for some other markets, although it still hasn't made it all the way over here. The netbook itself is about as standard as can be, and includes a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and built-in Bluetooth, among other not at all surprising specs -- although you will apparently get a bundled DVD burner and wireless mouse with it, which makes the nearly $650 price tag at least a tad more reasonable. Doomsday alert: internet to become an "unreliable toy" in 2012
Okay, so first things first -- we all know the world's on track to end in 2012, so it's not like this really matters. When compared against similarly configured PCs, Apple's computers are competitively priced. However, in taking a step back and looking at PCs vs Macs as a whole, Macs are generally more expensive because Apple does not cut many of the corners PC manufacturers do (ie: selling fancy chips with cheap connectivity and casings). GMABooster gives your netbook's integrated graphics a nudge
It won't exactly provide an Ion-level boost in performance, but it looks like the GMABooster app that's been floating around for a little while does indeed deliver on its promise of providing a small helping hand to the stock Intel GMA 950 graphics found in the majority of netbooks out there. More specifically, the application boosts the clock speed from the standard 133MHz or 166MHz to a full 400MHz, or the same as the non-low voltage chipset found on standard laptops. MobileMe Support has posted a bulletin warning customers that the MobileMe mail function is temporarily experiencing issues today, April 30th. Google Android phones getting updated to Cupcake? Pre mini rumored?
The iPhone's biggest (shipping) competitor is the Google Adroid-based G1 from T-Mobile. According to Engadget, T-Mobile is now doing over-the-air updates to the G1 to the Android 1.5(Cupcake) OS.
BGR is also reporting that like Apple Rumors, Palm rumors also say that they are going to release a smaller Pre this year. That thing pictured to your right is supposed to be it ->. IT is based on the current Centro hardware.

Wie 9to5Mac berichtet, enthält eine Vorabversion von iTunes 8.2 einen Hinweis darauf, dass die Software zukünftig auch Blu-ray-Medien wiedergeben kann. GTX 285: NVIDIA arbeitet an neuer Grafikkarte für Mac Pro

Motorola posts $291 million loss in first quarter, mobile sales fall 45 percent
Motorola has spilled some very unappetizing beans with its first quarter results. The company missed its projected sales figure of $5.62 billion, posting $5.4 billion, $1.8 billion of which were in its handsets division. The cellphone space is where the company seems to be hurting the most -- sales were down 45 percent there -- though some projections had it faring worse than that. Microsoft’s Xbox strategy boss Richard Teversham has quit the firm to join arch rival Apple
Richard Teversham, (former) senior director of business, insights and strategy for Microsoft's Xbox, is now moving to Apple. Teversham is just the latest in a string of high profile executives leaving established technology firms for Apple. This particular moves speaks volumes for the future of Apple's gaming prospects.
According to MCV, Teversham has accepted an education-related role at the iPod creator’s European office.

Guy goes to extreme lengths to get his MacBook Air issue heard
At first, we were like "What an idiot, this guy is destroying a mostly good MacBook Air for no reason, he must be rich and stupid". But, look what happened. The video is spreading over the Internet. It seems he was pretty much over the MacBook Air with bad hinge (which the video does illustrate has a much brighter screen) and moved on to the ThinkPad, but he probably could have gotten a few hundred bucks for it on Ebay.

The Wall Street Journal today took a look at Apple's in-house Silicon plans. Two new recent hires, Raja Koduri and Bob Drebin were both high ranking defectors from struggling AMD/ATI. Both were also focused in the graphics arenas. But there are many, many more.

BeBook mini e-reader with 5-inch display makes pictorial debut]
It's not the BeBook 2, unfortunately, but Endless Ideas' official Twitter has released an image of a smaller variant of its current e-book reader, dubbed the BeBook mini. It's got a 5-inch e-ink display and reportedly all the same features as its older brother. Manufacturer Tianjin Jinke Electronics also happens to sell products under the Hanlin brand, and this looks to be the same device as the upcoming Hanlin v5, which according to Chinese site mobread would indicate SD card support and a May release window locally. As for elsewhere in the world, there's no indication of a release date, but BeBook Twitter feed did tease about staying under the $200 / €200 price barrier.

Deutsche Telekom legt Festnetz- und Mobilfunksparte zusammen
Die Deutsche Telekom will die Bereiche Festnetz und Mobilfunk zusammenlegen. Dies teilte der Dax-Konzern auf der gestrigen Hauptversammlung in Köln mit. After a brief period of no news, it's time to revisit the world of invisible cloaks. Inspired by the ideas of theoretical physicist John Pendry at Imperial College, London, two separate groups of researchers from Cornell University and UC Berkeley claim to have prototyped their own cloaking devices. Infineon meldet weiterhin hohe Verluste
Infineon leidet weiterhin unter der Wirtschaftskrise und der Insolvenz seiner Speicherchip-Tochter Qimonda. Im zweiten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. März) brach der Umsatz gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 29 Prozent auf 747 Millionen Euro ein. Im Vergleich zum bereits schwachen Vorquartal ging der Umsatz um 10 Prozent zurück. Acers Gewinn bricht im ersten Quartal um 31 Prozent ein
Acer hat im ersten Quartal 2009 einen Gewinneinbruch von 31,4 Prozent hinnehmen müssen. Der Gewinn nach Steuern sank gegenüber den ersten drei Monaten des Vorjahres um 20,29 Millionen Euro auf 45,76 Millionen Euro. Der Gewinn pro Aktie lag bei 1,7 Cent, 35 Prozent weniger als im ersten Vierteljahr 2008.

So far, sending files to your Kindle cost a flat fee -- one dime per document for conversion and download over Whispernet. Looks like that honeymoon is over, as Amazon's announced that as of May 4th, the Personal Document Service will be a variable fee of $0.15 per megabyte, rounding up. It's still free of charge if you transfer the documents over via USB, and sending them to "name"@free.kindle.com will return converted files to your email address gratis. If you're trying to be frugal, we might suggest combining all those pending transfers into one fat PDF and sending it off sometime this weekend.

GeForce GTX 285 für Mac ab Juni?

The ATOM no longer on the boil?
According to Digitimes that quotes market sources, the demand for the ATOM, the processor used in cheap NetBooks, has started to slow during the last few months ago. Even though this processor has made it possible for Intel to gain market share, it is now in competition with other solutions with low power consumption with a not so powerful cpu in a war which low seems more dictated only by the price.
It is possible that the customers prefer to await new more powerful versions of this CPU which should arrive soon. But one should not be deluded, Intel has no interest in releasing a too powerful ATOM. On the contrary, since it would overlap with the processors Core 2 Duo which offer to the foundry a much higher margin.

Android 1.5 already hitting T-Mobile G1s?
We'd kinda gotten used to the cold, hard reality of being teased with the promise of a Cupcake build on our retail G1s out in some distant, nondeterministic future that we may or may not be a part of -- but all of a sudden, it looks like we might've vaulted right past Cupcake. We've now received multiple tips this evening suggesting that T-Mobile may have started distributing Android 1.5 as an over-the-air update to G1 owners, which would bring customizable widgets, messaging enhancements, virtual keyboards, and UI tweaks (among many other goodies) to an eager public. Anyone out there seeing this?

Internationale Anwender punkten im Support-Streit mit SAP
SAP hat im Konflikt mit dem SAP Usergroup Executive Network (SUGEN), der Dachorganisation der SAP-Anwendergruppen, eingelenkt. Der Walldorfer Konzern wird die im Juli 2008 angekündigte stufenweise Preisanpassung für "Enterprise Support" auf 22 Prozent nun statt in vier im Verlauf von sieben Jahre vornehmen. Außerdem wurde der maximale Preisanstieg pro Jahr auf 3,1 Prozent begrenzt. Für Kunden in Deutschland und Österreich gilt die bereits früher vereinbarte Preiserhöhung nach dem Lohnkostenindex.

Electrofluidic display tech improves color e-ink, makes you sound smarter
The race to develop a mass-market color e-ink display is at fever pitch, and there's a new challenger on the scene: electrofluidic display, or EFD. Developed at the University of Cincinnati in partnership with a handful of private companies, the new tech apparently blows everything else out of the water -- according to professor Jason Heikenfeld, EFD has superior brightness, color saturation, and video speed, all in a 15-micron thick panel that can eventually be used in rollable displays. What will Apple do with a GPU specialist?
Apple created sensation when it was learned they had poached Bob Drebin from AMD, a senior executive in the field of graphics chips. Even though we still do not know the role and especially the projects on which he will have to work, the speculations are running strong, especially if one links this with the purchase of PASemi. We find ourselves with very many possibilities that tempt us particularly.
Recently, Tim Cook indicated that Apple is really not interested in the netbooks because the hardware of these machines did not offer a worthy user experience. One can suppose that they could develop their own hardwarel platform intended for these machines and ultra optimized for a hybrid version between Mac OS X and iPhone OS.

AMD exodus to Apple continues with Raja Koduri
The Inquirer reports that beyond last week's news of Bob Drebin defecting to Apple, AMD/ATI processor star, Raja Koduri is heading to Cupertino as well.
We've just heard from sources deep inside 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California that Raja is heading there.
Between PASemi, Bob Drebin and other things we can't talk about yet, Apple is building up some serious hardware talent. All they need now is a good reliability person and a fire chief, and things will get really interesting on the hardware front in Cupertino.

iPhone Notes syncing coming in 10.5.7
The latest version on iTunes 8.2 prerelease contains a Notes syncing pane. But you'll need 10.5.7 to use the functionality. So we are going to hazard a guess that 10.5.7 is going to have a Notes updateand is probably coming fairly soon.

The Apple Blog has the goods. Basically, now you can have more than one account on your Touch device. We're not sure how often this would come up or why someone would need multiple accounts (work/play?) but apparantly now you can switch between the two on the iPhone.

iPhone vs. Eee in typing speed in a racecar...guess who wins
We're not sure how fair this contest is but it certainly looked like fun! Crave UK got to put the iPhone up against the EeePC in a pretty speedy little Citroen in a drive around a race track. While we'll concede that the Eee isn't built to be typed on going around corners at 700MPH, the accuracy of the iPhone doing those same corners was still impressive. When not racing around a track we think the Eee might be a bit faster, especially if it is the 1000HE's MacBook style keyboard but we'll give it to the iPhone in this case.

AutoDesSys has announced bonzai3D, a 3D modeling program for Mac and Windows systems. The application provides tools that are designed for quickly building 3D models, with the option to transform the creations into accurate construction drawings for further development. Real time Booleans are supported, along with NURBS curves and surfaces, OpenGL rendering and dynamic graphic editing.

HP ProBook 4710s hands-on
We just had a quick run-in with the 17-inch version of HP's new ProBook s-series laptops. The design is almost startlingly nondescript, but not so minimal that it feels like they aren't trying. Build quality isn't legendary -- there's a little bit of keyboard flex, as noted by Laptop, and the whole thing feels a bit overly plastic -- but on the plus side it's lighter than it looks and should certainly hold up well to most pursuits. The keys have a bit of casual wobble to them, but they're clacky in the right sort of way, and very well defined. The screen is oh-so-thankfully non-glossy, and plenty fine to look

iPod nano 1G mit GPS
Eine nette Bastelei ist Ben Kokes gelungen: Er hat einen GPS-Empfänger für den iPod nano 1G gebastelt und lässt die aktuellen Geopositionsdaten auf dem iPod-Display anzeigen. Er nutzt dazu den AiR-Modus, der es erlaubt, ein Bild mit vier Farben an den iPod zu schicken. Seine Hardware muss also auch das Generieren dieser Grafik, sowie die Kommunikation mit dem Gerät übernehmen.

Yearning for more info on the HP MediaSmart LX195? Here's some new concrete details for you to go along with the leaked images from earlier this month. As previously suggested, it's got a a single 640GB internal SATA drive with 7200RPM, with the only option for expansion being via the four USB 2.0 ports in the back. We're also looking at a 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor, 1GB RAM, Windows Home Server software and support for Apple's Time Machine. NVIDIA working on GeForce GTX 285 for Mac Pro
NVIDIA is working on a high-end video card for the Mac Pro, the GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition, according to AppleInsider. AT&T's "new" video streaming terms are a non-issue
There's an awful lot of hubbub going around today about "new" terms in AT&T's wireless contract agreement that seemingly forbid streaming video from your television to your PC or your phone -- in other words, using a Slingbox -- which would seem to be a rewrite of language added and pulled a few weeks ago. Here's the problem: the terms aren't new, and they don't forbid video streaming. One of our editors has a month-old hard copy of AT&T's terms that were mailed to him after agreeing to a new contract, and they're exactly the same -- word for word.

Guitar Hero arduino note visualizer lights our fire
A crafty Guitar Hero DIY-er has built a little project with possibly startling implications. The includes ambient light sensors in front of the television which are triggered by the light of the notes on screen during Guitar Hero gameplay. The sensors trigger an Arduino to turn on LEDS on a nearby setup. In the video (which is after the break) you can see the entire thing in action -- which maker Joe says can eventually lead to a rig which plays the game for you. The horror![Via Make]

iPhone vs. Eee in typing speed in a racecar...guess who wins
We're not sure how fair this is but it certainly looked like fun! Crave UK got to put the iPhone up against the EeePC in a pretty speedy little Citroen. While we'll concede that the Eee isn't built to be typed on going around corners at 700MPH, the accuracy of the iPhone doing those same corners was still impressive. When not racing around a track we think the Eee might be a bit faster, especially if it is the 1000HE's keyboard.

Multiple account support in new iPhone 3.0B4?
The Apple Blog has the goods. Basically, now you can have more than one account on your Touch device. We're not sure how often this would come up or why someone would need multiple accounts (work/play?) but apparantly now you can switch between the two on the iPhone.
Anybody able to enable the video features??

Ciclotte exercise bike for the big wheel enthusiast
We can't say we've given much thought to the state of the exercise bike design, but we're definitely digging the Ciclotte concept that was just exhibited in Milan. Details are light, apart from a note that it's almost entirely made of carbon fiber, but hopefully designer Luca Schieppati is working on bringing it -- and that crazy road-faring version on the left -- to market soon. PhaseOne P40+ medium format camera hits the streets of Copenhagen
It's been a few moments since Phase One had us lusting after one of its devices, and now the company is back with a 40 megapixel system named, appropriately enough, the P40+. Like the P65+ we peeped last year, this new guy offers two separate image-capture modes -- in this case, you're looking at either a standard mode for full 40 megapixel shooting, or a 10 megapixel Sensor+ mode that gives you a four-fold increase in light sensitivity (ISO to 3200), and a 1.8 fps capture rate. Both modes feature a 12.5 f-stop dynamic range. The camera is shipping now, and it will run you a cool €16,990 ($22,073)

Facebook verklagt StudiVZ
Facebook hat vor dem Landgericht das soziale Netzwerk StudiVZ verklagt, nachdem bereits im Juli des letzten Jahres bei einem Gericht in Kalifornien Klage eingereicht wurde. In der ersten mündlichen Verhandlung erhebt Facebook Plagiatsvorwürfen, die allerdings ein Sprecher von StudiVZ als haltlos zurückgeweist.
