Palm Pre spotted in the wild, possibly running YouTube
It's not clear exactly where these pics came from, but here's the Palm Pre, running what appears to be a YouTube app and the email app. We're of two minds on these: there's no doubt there are devices in the wild, so these shots could be totally real, but something about them just feels off -- that "Search All Videos" font seems way more Sprint than Palm, for example. Eizo Nanao intros eco monitors with presence sensors

Apple hits 1 Billion App Store downloads
Apple on Thursday surpassed 1 billion App Store downloads, bringing an end to the recent sweepstakes. The user that downloaded the billionth app, or submitted a non-purchase entry at after the 999,999,999th app, will receive a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a $10,000 iTunes Gift Certificate. Microsoft revenue drops 6% in winter
Microsoft today provided a sharp contrast to Apple's performance and reported a rare drop in its revenue for its March quarter. Compared to the same period in 2008, Microsoft's revenue sank 6 percent to $13.65 billion. The news was also compounded by troubles with income, as it gained 3 percent in operating income but plunged 32 percent in net income to $2.98 billion.

Microsoft reports first drop in quarterly earnings EVER
Bad economy, or Vista really sucks? Maybe both.
Microsoft today reported a 6% drop in year-over-year revenue for the quarter ending March 30, 2009. Microsoft's drop in net income was larger, falling 32% to $2.98 billion. Microsoft said that the Client, Microsoft Business Division, and Server & Tools divisions were "negatively impacted by weakness in the global PC and Server markets." In other words, PC sales are down. Microsoft expects "the weakness to continue through at least the next quarter."
One note of good news, for the economy at least: Microsoft says revenue from enterprise customers "remained stable".

If you're at the Shenzhen Metro station any time soon, you'll unlikely happen across the beautiful, beautiful sight above. The station -- which is in Shenzhen province just north of Hong Kong -- has installed some keyboard art that really speaks to the typist in our souls -- we even type in our dreams occasionally. T-Mobile announces tiny new "embedded SIM" for connected devices
Sure, SIM cards are small, but they're not tiny, and fitting the entire assembly into an embedded device requires a lot of space -- so T-Mobile's new embedded SIM system should make it possible to build even smaller connected devices like hospital monitors and smart energy meters that can report back to a server. Deconstructing Tim Cook's remarks on Netbooks
Tim Cook was pretty harsh on the Netbook world yesterday with his comments:
“When I look at what is being sold in the notebook space today, I see cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens — just not a consumer experience, not something we would put the Mac brand on, it’s a segment we don’t play in.I think it’s a stretch to call it a personal computer.”

AMD Phenom II X4 955 and 945 benchmarked to high heaven
Just when you though you'd had your fill of insanely detailed benchmarks of processors you may or may not have ever heard of, AMD's new Phenom II X4 955 and 945 hit the scene to get those overclockers all in a tizzy. The top of the line is the 955 "Black Edition" at 3.2GHz, while the 945 plays with a petty 3GHz. And the verdict? They're clearly AMD's fastest so far, but that might not be fast enough. AMD offers great value, but only really matches Intel's Core 2 offerings on performance -- Core i7 is still out in front. There is the fact that Phenom II offers a nice upgrade path for certain people who already do the AMD thing and are looking to upgrade, along with "enthusiasts" who are "enthused" by easy-access overclocking, but overall it looks like AMD is still playing catch-up with Intel.

Analysts optimistic after Apple Q209 results
Results for Apple's second fiscal quarter were better than expected, and promising for the future, say analysts. The company achieved nearly $8.2 billion in revenue, producing EPS of $1.33. iPod sales measured in at 11 million, beating expectations of just 9 to 10 million; some 3.8 million iPhones were sold, as compared to predictions of 3 to 3.2.

iPhone eclipses Symbian in mobile web use
The use of the iPhone online has accelerated to where it's now outranking Symbian in terms of sheer traffic, AdMob's March 2009 metrics report shows. Japan getting Wii video service May 1st, complete with DSi connectivity

T-Mobile sells a million G1s in the US
We don't know why T-Mobile isn't trumpeting this, but Deutche Telekom's Q1 results are out, and the multinational carrier says that over one million G1s have been sold in the US, making up a majority of the 1.5 million 3G devices currently active on T-Mo's network. We're not the biggest theatre-goers around here (though we've been known to take in the odd Phantom of the Opera performance), but this is one play we would jump at the chance to see. Called -- quite fittingly -- Robots, the musical stars three autonomous robots developed by Bluebotics, a company which specializes in service bots. Firefox 3.0.9 fixes missing cookies, attachments

OLPC graduate Pixel Qi announces 3Qi three-in-one screen will debut next month
After spinning off from the OLPC project last year with that fancy dual-mode display technology in its pocket, Pixel Qi has been pretty much talk. Now there's more talk, but at least it comes with a timeline: next month. That's when Pixel Qi founder Mary Lou Jepsen believes the much-anticipated 10-inch 3Qi display should hit the scene, combining a low-power black and white mode, e-paper mode and high-resolution color LCD mode into one glorious, sunlight-readable (and hopefully outlandishly cheap) screen. New silicon film ferroelectric may pave the way for instant-on computers (or maybe not)

X-mini Happy arrives for quasi-spherical MP3 playback
There's just something slightly alien to the X-Mini, and this latest "Happy" model does little to assuage our unfounded fears of it. What's new this time around is MP3 playback, thanks to an SD card slot. Size and shape-wise it's almost identical to its X-Mini II predecessor. Happy can handle about 6 hours of playback, or 11 hours of speaker work, on a charge, and the USB cable not only charges the ball but also allows the unit to work as a slightly-less-difficult-to-misplace SD card reader. Intel: Notebook-Verlust kostet Firmen im Schnitt 50.000 Dollar
Intel hat eine vom Ponemon Institute durchgeführte Studie veröffentlicht, wonach Unternehmen durch den Diebstahl oder Verlust eines Notebooks durchschnittlich Kosten in Höhe von 49.246 Dollar entstehen. VMware steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
VMware hat seinen GAAP-Nettogewinn im ersten Quartal 2009 gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres von 43,1 auf 69,9 Millionen Dollar gesteigert. OpenCL: NVIDIA intensiviert Bemühungen

Well, that fast -- just a day after the Bluetooth SIG officially announced the new Bluetooth 3.0 specification, Broadcom's announced that its BCM4325 chip has been certified and is ready to go. iPod touch 2G hardwareseitig für Bluetooth 3.0 geeignet
Mit Bluetooth 3.0 steht erstmals ein grundlegendes Update des Funkstandards kurz bevor. Bald werden viele Geräte die schnelleren Übertragungsraten unterstützen, die durch das Miteinbeziehen des WLAN-Chips erreicht werden. Dadurch lässt sich die Datenrate um das Zehnfache der momentanen Geschwindigkeit steigern, ohne dabei auf Netzwerke angewiesen zu sein. Laut dem fscklog ist der im iPod touch 2G verwendete Broadcom BCM4325-Chipsatz bereits Bluetooth-3.0-kompatibel.

AMD bringt zwei weitere Phenom-II-CPUs für den Sockel AM3
Wie erwartet hat AMD sein Prozessor-Portfolio um zwei Desktop-Modelle der Phenom-II-Serie mit 45 Nanometern Strukturbreite erweitert. Der Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition und der Phenom II X4 945 unterstützen den Sockel AM3 sowie DDR3-Speicher mit einer Frequenz von bis zu 1333 MHz. Panasonic stellt 3D-HD-Kamera vor
Auf der NAB 2009 hat Panasonic ein komplettes 3D-System von Aufnahme bis zur Präsentation vorgestellt. Aufbauend auf dem flashspeicherbasierenden P2-System fällt besonders der mit einem Doppelobjektiv versehene Camcorder auf. Letzterer wirkt deutlich eleganter als diverse 3D-Bastellösungen, bei denen meist zwei Kameras auf einer Schiene befestigt wurden, um parallel zwei Bilder aufzunehmen.

On the lower end is the 198 yuan (US $29) MV622, with a 2.4-inch LCD screen, 2GB storage and three colors to choose from (pictured). The MV651 has a larger, 3-inch screen with 400 x 240 resolution, TV-out, FM radio, and 4GB capacity for 299 ($44) yuan. Ebay verzeichnet sinkenden Gewinn und Umsatz
Ebay hat das zweite Quartal in Folge einen rückläufigen Gewinn ausgewiesen (PDF). Dieser lag im ersten Quartal 2009 mit 357,1 Millionen Dollar um 22 Prozent unter dem Vorjahresergebnis. It's 2009 and we're still waiting for the Near Field Communication revolution. However, due to tough economic times and a lack of consumer devices, planned commercial NFC rollouts will likely be pushed into 2010. Still, we can add one more device to the NFC tally -- the Nokia 6216 Classic. The 6216 is Nokia's first handset with an embedded NFC chipset that communicates with NFC applications stored on the SIM. That little trick keeps the carriers happy while allowing consumers to keep their credit card info and contact-less ticketing and payment applications on the SIM for easy mobility between NFC devices. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 superzoomer reviewed
Sure, it's got that funky flip-out display, in-camera panorama stitching, HD video recording and a host of other fancy features for its $500 pricepoint, but does Sony's new Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 give DSLRs a run for their money? Digital Photography Review doesn't seem to think so. The camera has a lot in common with Canon's similarly-positioned SX1 IS, and even bests it in some departments with that 10 fps continuos shooting mode, but the actual image quality just isn't in the same ballpark as a barely more expensive DSLR, and DP Review figures that if you don't need the 20x zoom or other more gimmicky features, most folks would probably be better served by saving their pennies for the real deal.

Logitech schreibt rote Zahlen

Apple hat im zweiten Geschäftsquartal (bis 28. März) die Erwartungen der Analysten übertroffen und trotz der Wirtschaftskrise Umsatz und Gewinn gesteigert. Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
Despite the economical crisis, Apple delivered solid results for the last qurter. As usuall they had to find a reference slogan, so it is "the best non-holiday quarter revenue and earnings in our history". Apple posted revenue of $8.16 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.21 billion, or $1.33 per diluted share. Apple sold 2.22 million Mac units during the quarter, 11.01 million iPods and 3.79 million iPhone, the latest representing 123 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
If sales of hardware slowed down by 3% compared to the year-ago quarter, it mostly mostly affect high-end models, as entry-level models keeps selling relatively well (MacBook and iMac) . Sales of iPod and iPhone remain strong and compensate the small decrease of hardware unit shipment. Apple expects higher revenue in the range of about $7.7 billion to $7.9 billion for hte next quarter, so we can postulate that new hardware model (at least new iPhone expected in June) should be introduced in a near futu

Hualu UCG501 MID packs everything but a release date
Well, here's an interesting little number. While there's little in terms of actual specifics, this new UCG501 MID from China's Hualu does make a lot of bold promises, including a purported "high-performance integrated graphics card," built-in GPS, some mobile TV of some sort, CDMA2000 connectivity, built-in Bluetooth, a "high capacity" 4700 mAh battery, and even a built-in optical mouse (yeah, we're still trying to figure out how that last one's supposed to work too). SanDisk mit Umsatzrückgang und Verlust

NVidia Made an Important Step Towards Open CL
Recently, NVidia indicated its interest for open CL, but the company was actively developing its proprietary API known as CUDA. However, a recent information indicates that NVidia is indeed very active on the open CL side. The company just made available to developers a pre-release version of its drivers able to manage natively Open CL. A complete SDK should follow during the year.
This is an excellent news for Apple as Open CL is now the basis of GPU management in the forthcoming Snow Leopard. It is quite obvious that Apple has been asking NVidia to natively support the Open CL standard with its current and forthcoming GPU, and the recent announcement of the Quadro FX 4800 for Mac Pro is for sure a sign.
So, everything looks good for Apple and its future Mac OS X version as it will be able to manage GPU power at will independently of the graphic card manufacturer. Indeed, the latest will have to bring optimized drivers and support for Open CL otherwise they would lose the Mac marke

Bluetooth 3.0 Will Top at 24 Mbits/s
As expected, the new Bluetooth 3.0 has been officially unveiled. It looks like an evolution of the current 2.1+EDR standard which is included but now associated with the 802.11n protocol to boost transfer speed of large files at up to 24 MBits/s. However, this is much slower tat what is currently possible with the 802.11n protocol. First products compatible with this new BT 3.0 format should arrive in 9 to 12 months, so the new iPhone might not support, except if Apple include a pre-release draft version, similarly to what happened with the pre-802.11n W-Fi protocol. The main advantage will be the back compatibility of the BT 3.0 with previous generation of BT products.

Yahoo: Entlassungen nach Gewinnrückgang
Der Internetkonzern Yahoo verzeichnete im ersten Quartal einen Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang und kündigte in Folge dessen an, weitere fünf Prozent der Belegschaft zu entlassen. Betroffen sind 675 der insgesamt 13.500 Mitarbeiter des Konzerns.

iPhone-Teleprompter mit Hardware
Nachrichtensprecher lesen überwiegend nicht mehr vom Blatt ab, sondern vom Teleprompter. Das ist ein Bildschirm, welcher neben der Kamera angebracht ist und den abzulesenden Text anzeigt. Das geht natürlich auch mit dem iPhone und Bodelin hat es nicht bei der Software belassen und auch die passende Hardware gezeigt.

EU steps toward fining Intel in antitrust case
The European Union has prepared a draft decision in an ongoing antitrust case against Intel that appears to be approaching completion, according to the Wall Street Journal. Unnamed sources familiar with the matter claim the EU will seek a fine against the company, although the draft can be modified as it continues through the process.

Aliph Jawbone Prime arrives to coddle your ears, raid your wallet
It's been almost a year since Aliph last graced the Bluetooth headset world with its presence, and now it's back with the Jawbone Prime to reclaim the throne. The Jawbone Prime is only a minor update -- on the surface, anyways -- to its predecessor, and in fact the only visible differentiation is a slightly different pattern and a minor indentation to differentiate between the headset's two invisible buttons. Other than the quite welcome addition of Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, almost all the improvements have to do with the algorithm tweaks of NoiseAssassin 2.0 to improve noise reduction, and it's really too bad the original isn't firmware-upgradable (we asked). Acer Aspire 3935 review roundup: sleek and affordable, but lacking gaming cred

Ugobe expects Pleo IP to fetch a pretty penny
Scientists may never fully understand why Pleo went extinct, but we've got a big hint for future generations -- it's probably because Ugobe was shipping products to customers who couldn't pay for them. That's at least the story according to Ugobe CEO Caleb Chung, who says that his robosaur was selling well to customers in Europe and Asia, but that the worldwide credit crunch meant that Pleos were just sitting in crates waiting for payment to arrive. Apple sells 11m iPods, Touch sales double
Although Apple experienced a decline in Mac sales for the quarter ending in March, iPod sales and App Store purchases continue to grow. The company sold over 11 million iPods, a growth of three percent compared to last year's quarter. The only iPod to launch during the three month period, the iPod shuffle 3G, was released just two weeks before the end of March.

iPhone sales blew everyone away. Although Apple reported iPhone sales of 3.8 Million (Called it!), they measured only until March 17th, the date of the 3.0 Beta release. That means the rest of the quarter's sales haven't been tabulated and won't be until 3.0 is released this summer.
Apple's Mac Sales were down 3% largely due to 11% decline in educational sales. However last year they had just released the MacBook Air which generated extraordinary amounts of sales. Also the PC industry in general saw double digit losses on mostly low margin netbooks.
Music sales were up 3% - even in this economy

Apple reports best ever March quarter with a $1.21b profit, calls netbooks "junky"
The economy might be in a dumpster, but Apple keeps selling iPods, iPhones and Macs -- the company just reported a $1.21b profit on revenues of $8.16b, which is yet another record quarter. In fact, if you do away with that pesky subscription accounting that the company uses for the iPhone and Apple TV, the numbers are even higher: $1.66b profit on $9.06b of revenue. Mac sales did fall three percent compared to a year ago, but that was offset by a three-percent increase in iPod sales (particularly of the iPod touch) and a 123-percent jump in iPhone sales. Soeben hat Apple die hauseigenen Quartalszahlen für das Q2-2009 veröffentlicht und damit gleichzeitig das bestes Märzquartal (mit Blick auf Umsatz und Gewinn) in der Firmengeschichte bekanntgegeben. Wir zitieren die relevanten Zahlen aus der gerade eingeflogenen Pressemitteilung:
"Apple hat im zweiten Quartal des Fiskaljahres 2009 2.220.000 Macintosh-Computer ausgeliefert, das entspricht drei Prozent weniger Absatz zum vergleichbaren Vorjahresquartal. 11.010.000 iPods sind im zurückliegenden Quartal über den Ladentisch gegangen, das sind drei Prozent Absatzwachstum verglichen zu Q2/2008. Im zurückliegenden Quartal sind 3.790.000 iPhones verkauft worden, 123 Prozent mehr als im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal."
