Sierra Wireless USB 598 available via Verizon
Sierra Wireless has announced that its USB 598 modem is now available for use on the Verizon Wireless network, as it has passed through the provider's open development program. The 598 is said to be the smallest available modem that taps into Verizon's EVDO Rev. A network, for download speeds up to 3.1Mbps, and upload speeds as fast as 1.8Mbps.

SmartQ 5 MID gets unboxed
We've already seen the SmartQ 5 MID out in the wild, and even sporting Ubuntu, but those sitting on pins and needles for the inevitable unboxing can now finally rest easy, as Kam Leung has stepped up and done the honors. Intel sued for Patent Infringement Linked to Technologies Used in Xeon Nehalem
Less than 48 hours after having released officially its new Xeon Nehalem, Intel is sued by a company named SiCortex which claims that Santa Clara's giant is using some of its technologies without owning any licenses. The patent infringement would be related to technologies developed to decrease the power consumption of CPU. The new Xeon is able to manage the power consumption in function of the load or requirements, decreasing or stopping totally parts of its transistors to reduce power consumption and decrease heat release. Intel did not really react yet to this announcement, indicating simply that such advanced power management technology was part of features defined for the new Xeon Nehalem already from its first draft.

AT&T kicks off $50 netbook-with-a-catch trial
We'd already had some indication that Dell's Mini 9 and Mini 12 netbooks were headed to AT&T stores, and it now looks like those and a few more are now finally available from the carrier -- in Atlanta and Philadelphia, at least. StatCounter: Firefox overtakes IE 7 in Europe
Firefox 3 has overtaken Internet Explorer 7 in Europe according to data from StatCounter. Although IE still leads when counting all versions (IE 8IE7/IE6), the current Mozilla-based Firefox usage has surpassed IE 7 by a percentage point. Ars Technica has reported that IE 8, released two weeks ago, has pulled over two percent of IE 7 users from its ranks, dropping it beneath Firefox.

MarketShare Unveils Figures for March
As every months, figures related to the market share of computer OS used to browse the US web have been collected and analyzed by MarketShare. In March, Apple marketshare moves up from 9.61% to 9.77%. Windows keeps dropping slowly, from 88.41% to 88.14%. The iPhone OS remains stable will 0.49% a quite big achievement for a non-computer OS. Regarding web browser, Safari market shares increases from 8.02% to 8.23%.
If Apple keeps grabbing market shares, it is not as fast as it used to be over the past 6 months. However, it also confirms than the financial crisis will not affect more specifically the Mac than any other PC models. NExt month we will see if the new anti-Apple Microsoft ads had any effect of those figures

Extreme DVD Burners: Burn Faster, BUT Not Better
CDRinfo published several tests of dVD burners able to reach a burning speed of 22x, including the last model from LG: the GH22NS30. As all tested drives, burning faster is not synonym of better burning quality. Indeed, the error rate per burned media is much higher than the expected standards.
Of course, recent drives can handle such burning errors to finally get the data out of them, however this is not a good point for a reliable long-term storage. Indeed, any additional physical damages could make the media totally unreadable, even on those error-correction enable drives.
If you still want to buy one of those high-burning speed drives, then you better check twice the article to identify which media you will have to use in order to minimize the error rate and offer a true reliable burned media.

CNET published a study looking at the evolution of salaries among developers depending if they work on Mac OS, Windows or Linux in New York City.
If one can clearly see that Mac developers have been for years paid less than their colleagues working on Linux and Windows, the development and success of Mac hardware and products have made their life brighter. Hulu begins encrypting HTML content to thwart non-browser apps
It looks like Hulu's trying yet another ill-fated tactic to keep its content restricted to traditional browsers and off things like Boxxee -- TunerFreeMCE's Martin Millmore says Hulu's HTML is now encrypted at the source and then decrypted using Javascript on the client. AT&T's Propel Pro ups the ante not only in build quality and material, but the new set is also reborn as a proper smartphone thanks to the inclusion of Windows Mobile 6.1. Though like its predecessor, we find a QWERTY keypad for the much loved messaging features, a 3 megapixel camera, and a well thought out and put together metal housing -- though the latter does add heft to an already chubby device. The multitouch trackpads on the new Apple laptops have a variety of gesture capabilities, including the pinch-zoom and rotate features. While these can come in handy for basic photo manipulation, if applications do not properly implement odd behavior may occur, such as the zoom acting temperamental in certain programs such as Photoshop. Studie: IE8 wird häufiger genutzt als Google Chrome
Keine zwei Wochen nach seiner Veröffentlichung wird Microsofts Internet Explorer 8 bereits häufiger genutzt als Googles Browser Chrome. Allerdings fällt der Marktanteil beider Programme im ersten Quartal 2009 mit 0,75 Prozent respektive 0,42 Prozent verschwindend gering aus. Acer meldet Gewinnzuwachs von 17 Prozent im vierten Quartal
Acer hat seinen Gewinn nach Steuern im vierten Quartal 2008 um 17 Prozent auf 85,7 Millionen Dollar gesteigert. Im Vergeleichszeitraum des Vorjahres lagen die Einnahmen noch bei 73 Millionen Dollar. Sprint's Samsung Instinct S30 hands-on with video
We had a few minutes with Sprint's Samsung Instinct S30 at CTIA this evening and while we couldn't dive in to find its deepest darkest secrets, we did get in a quick tour. This handset is well balanced in hand, perhaps even a tad on the light and "plasticky" side for our taste, but hey, we only had scant minutes to tour before the mob descended. The touch screen seems up to Samsung's "Please Touch" theme for this year's CTIA, the haptic feedback adding nice, ah, feedback when in use by reassuring the lab mice in us that our input was doing something. Xeon Nehalem Released by Intel
As expected, Intel officially unveiled its new Xeon nehalem yesterday, even though Apple already released and offers new Mac Pro powered by those CPUs for now several weeks. Nevertheless, one should notice some interesting points:
Apple did not used the fastest Xeon Nehalem for its high-end Mac Pro clocked at 2.93 GHz, Intel fastest Nehalem is clocked at 3.2 GHz. However, apple used models with high TDP (and corresponding prices).
The QPI bus does not have the same performance level on all Mac Pro, the bandwidth reaches 5.86 GT/s for the 2.26 GHz model, while it tops at 6.40 GT/s for models with Xeon clocked at 2.66 and 2.93 GHz.
The Xeon Nehalem features the turboboost technology that automatically overclocked the CPU if only one or two cores are used.

A 500 MB/s Storage Unit in a Mac Pro
In June 2008, we installed a RAID volume composed of 2 WD Velociraptor in a Mac Pro (below the SuperDrive bay), providing at that time a rather impressive data transfer speed of about 200 MB/s in reading and writing mode.
Of course, things changed and evolved from that time, and in particular, SSDs have been released. While the price of such solid state drive is now low enough to justify a purchase for a Pro user, so we decided to replace both Velociraptor by 2 OCZ SSD Vertex of 120 GB. The first good news is related to the storage space. As shown on the capture below, those drives offer the expected capacity, and even a bit more: 121.6 GB.

Apple Is Preparing its New Xserves Based on Nehalem
According to AppleInsider, Apple might be preparing to refresh its Xserve models with Nehalem-based units. On a purely technical point of view, there is not barrier to such release, as the Nehalem Xeon are TDP compatible with those found in Xserve, however, the motherboard will be dramatically different than the one found in the Mac Pro.To be successful, Apple should install 6 RAM module banks per processor, so enough to currently reach 192 GB of RAM. It could also be useful to increase the number of HD bays and not remain limited to 3. Several server manufacturers have now replaced the 3.5" HD format to 2.53 HD in their models as performance level are very similar but power consumption is dramatically down.However, it remains only hypothesis, and one should not forget that the Xserve was celebrated when it was powered by the IBM G5 and installed in cluster farms.

Our time with it was all too brief, but we had just a few moments to play with a SIM-less E71x last evening -- and yes, we're pretty sure this blacked-out beauty is going to sell like Canadian bananas when it launches on AT&T in the next few weeks, especially at that enticing $99.99 price point. Anyone who's handled an original E71 will know exactly what's going on here: slim, sexy, totally usable keypad, and WiFi. Too bad they weren't able to cram in a 3.5mm jack on the E71x to complement the addition of S60 3.2, but hey, we're just going to count our sub-hundred-dollar blessings and move on.

Bundesnetzagentur senkt Gebühr für die letzte Meile
Die Bundesnetzagentur hat heute die Gebühr für den Zugang zur Teilnehmeranschlussleitung (TAL) der Deutschen Telekom, der sogenannten letzten Meile, gesenkt. Ab dem 1. April 2009 müssen die Wettbewerber für die Anmietung der TAL monatlich 10,20 Euro an die Telekom entrichten bisher waren es 10,50 Euro. Die monatlichen Überlassungsentgelte für den Zugang zur TAL gelten für einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren bis zum 31. März 2011.

Corsair actually debuted its questionably useful Voyager Port earlier this month at CeBIT, but it's just now getting around to making things official. By the books, this one is described as an "innovative solution to transform any USB flash drive into a powerful and flexible portable backup and recovery device," but really, it does nothing that a standalone USB stick couldn't do given the right software. Calibre: Tageszeitung als E-Book auf den Touch

Im Januar spendierte Entwickler Extensis seiner Schriftverwaltung Suitcase Fusion 2 das letzte umfassende Update. Gespräche gescheitert: Google und GEMA gehen getrennte Wege
Die Verhandlungen zwischen Google und GEMA über die Fortführung eines Lizenz-Abkommens zur Wiedergabe von Musiktiteln bei Youtube sind zu keinem zufrieden stellenden Ende gekommen. Bis zum 31.03. dieses Jahres lief der Vertrag und bei den Gesprächen zu einer Verlängerung ergaben sich für beide Seiten unzumutbare Bedingungen. YouTube sperrt Musikvideos für Nutzer aus Deutschland
Nach dem Scheitern der Vertragsverhandlungen mit der GEMA über die Verlängerung des Lizenzvertrags hat Youtube angekündigt, alle Musikvideos für deutsche Nutzer zu sperren. Der zum 31. Zwar hat sich NeoOffice einst von OpenOffice gelöst, um das freie Office Paket nativ auf dem Mac laufen zu lassen, für die Version 3.0 haben sich die Entwickler nun aber doch entschieden, wieder näher an OpenOffice heranzurücken und für die Neuauflage von NeoOffice die OpenOffice-Codebasis zu nutzen. Obwohl OpenOffice 3.0 inzwischen auch mit einer Mac-Version nachgezogen ist, verspricht NeoOffice eine bessere Anpassung an Mac OS X und eine effizientere Einbindung von Mac-eigenen Funktionen.

Nur noch Upload kompletter Websites möglich
Ein Leser informierte uns darüber, dass es zeitgleich zum Update von iWeb 3.0 auf Version 3.0.1 anscheinend auch in MobileMe Umbauten gegeben haben muss, die verhinderten, dass nach einer geringfügigen Änderung an einer Webseite nur die neuen Teile auf den Server hochgeladen wurden. Stattdessen wird die gesamte Site jedes Mal übertragen. Der Schalter funktioniert anscheinend nicht mehr, mit dem früher bestimmt werden konnte, ob man einen Komplett- oder einen Teilupload wünscht. iWeb markiert immer alle Daten als geändert. Bei großen Datenmengen kann dies lästig werden.

GEMA killt Musikvideos auf YouTube
Die GEMA macht Schluss mit lustig und unterbindet die Verbreitung von Musikvideos auf YouTube, indem sie 12 Cent pro gestreamtem Musikvideo fordert. Ironischerweise trifft die Maßnahme als erstes diejenigen, für die sich die GEMA (angeblich) stark macht: So kann man auf dem offiziellen YouTube-Channel von Sony BMG von Deutschland aus keine Musikvideos mehr ansehen, weil die als Werbung für Bands und Label angedachte Maßnahme ein Opfer der GEMA-Gebührenforderung wurde. Skype works on AT&T's 3G on iPhone 3.0
We just found something very interesting. When you install Skype on a 3.0 developer preview iPhone, you can use AT&T's connection to make and receive calls. It even works pretty well over EDGE. Skype treats AT&T's WWAN like a Wifi connection. I did a quick video and posted it below:

Die ARD-Hörspielserie Radio Tatort kann jetzt auch als Podcast abonniert werden. Dies macht in diesem Fall besonders Sinn, da die ARD es bis heute nicht geschafft hat, die Lizenzbedingungen für ihre Produktionen so abzustimmen, dass ein Download der mit öffentlich-rechtlichen Mitteln finanzierten Hörspiele dauerhaft angeboten werden kann.
Aktuelle Folgen des Radio Tatort sind jeweils nur für einen relativ kurzen Zeitraum als MP3-Download verfügbar, über den neu eingerichteten Podcast-Feed erhält man neu bereit gestellte Folgen automatisch (Abo am besten über iTunes->Erweitert->Podcast abonnieren).

Instead of playing an April Fool joke on you, we decided to give you a dose of rumours. Thus, if they do not pan out, we will be able to say that it was a joke:)
To start, we received information agreeing with AppleInsider about Snow Leopard. It will certainly not be ready before September although we will learn some more in May. Apple has still some enormously work to do on QuickTime X, Open CL and Large Central.Note that the internal build will support Blu-ray but that Apple has not negotiated yet a licensing agreement, and now there is not a single interlocutor to deal with.
The new Xserve will arrive in June, and on this occasion Apple will alter its range of Mac Pro by adding to the catalogue a Xeon 3,2 GHz and a Quadro FX 5800.

NIF scientists set the controls for nuclear fusion
It looks like nuclear fusion is no longer just for precocious teenagers. Among the flurry of experiments going down worldwide, significant work will start rolling at the US National Ignition Facility sometime this June. Under construction for twelve years, the lab will focus 192 giant laser beams on two forms of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. Combining these isotopes at high temperatures generates a colossal amount of energy, recreating conditions "at the heart of the sun." The goal is to find a way to achieve controlled, sustained nuclear fusion and energy gain in a lab. Samsung Instinct S30 now official, coming to Sprint on April 19th

The built-in junk mail filter for Apple's Mail client is a fairly robust system that can be tailored to get the majority of junk mail; however, it has its limitations. A recent one that has affected a few users is spam with no apparent content to the message.

Restart not working with multiple users logged in
There is a bug in OS X that may prevent you from quickly shutting down a computer with Fast User Switching enabled, if another user has applications open. When another user account is logged in and running applications, you can either switch to that account and log them out properly, or force their applications to quit by immediately shutting down. If you try the latter of these two options, the system will prompt you for an administrator password to log the other users out. However, supplying the credentials may not work.

Moixa Sphere multitouch orb bends minds, credulity
Ordinarily we'd take one look at Moixa's Sphere interactive display ball around this time of year and immediately dismiss it as an April Fools joke, but something tells us not even the most dedicated would-be pranksters take the time and expense to patent their little diversions. That said, we're definitely not so sure this thing will make its planned 2010 ship date, since it's just a render right now, but if it does, we'll be first in line -- a folding multitouch display with an always-on net connection and gyroscopic interface elements that can also be used folded flat sounds pretty amazing to us. Emulator runs Wii games in 720p while we wonder what might have been
Using PCs to do what Nintendon't, YouTube user renebarahona is running Wii games in HD resolutions through the Dolphin emulator. One peek at Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 720p is enough to make any of us wonder what a world where Nintendo didn't hate HD (even yanking 480p capability from the Gamecube, we're still not over that) would be like. Mechanical heart built from Sony gear still pines for AIBO
As much as we'd like this to be a still from a new, secretly-in-development Cronenberg movie, it's actually an image of the nightmare-inducing mechanical heart that stars in a new series of Sony ads set to air during England's World Cup qualifying campaign on ITV. The hook, of course, is that the heart is apparently built (by special effects house Artem) almost entirely from Sony gear, including parts from BRAVIA TVs, Blu-ray players, VAIO laptops, Cybershot cameras, PS3s, and even the odd Walkman.
