Exmovere's wearable Chariot: for the mild-mannered cyborg
What does it take to make robotic exoskeletons look like a quaint relic of the past? This -- a new wearable transportation device concept that Exmovere Holdings has dubbed the Chariot. Apparently, the device is specifically intended to help amputees and people that have difficulty standing, with a range of sensors used to let the wearer control the device at speeds up to 12 miles per hour with a minimum amount of physical effort. Korean carrier KTF launches mobile phone-controlled vacuum cleaner
South Korean telecom firm KTF has just announced a cleaning robot which can be controlled by a 3G cellphone. The robot -- called the CW100 -- was built in collaboration with Microbot, and is a "smart" vacuum (much like a Roomba). The CW100 uses an onboard video camera to send live images of what it's "seeing" to the mobile phone, and the user can then remotely control it using the keypad. The bot will be sold for KRW 500,000 (about $370) in conjunction with a data plan that runs KRW 5,000 (about $3.70) per month. Apple taking steps to address white MacBook cracks
Apple is acknowledging problems with the casing on 13-inch white MacBooks, reports of a memo indicate. Owners have for some time been describing cracks appearing on MacBooks, in spite of ordinary usage. At least as recently as November however, Apple is said to have been refusing to cover repairs for bottom casings, at the same time as cracks on top were being addressed.

UK may push carriers to share 3G bands
British cellular carriers O2 and Vodafone are being asked by the government to share their 3G spectrum as part of an effort to supply rural broadband. T-Mobile market testing terrible names for the HTC Magic / Sapphire
We're not sure why T-Mobile would be market-testing names other than "G2" for its upcoming HTC Sapphire, but it apparently is -- and if these leaked slides are to be believed, it's not doing so well on the ideas front. Seriously: "T-Mobile Genius 3G with Google" and "Prism 3G with Google" both trade in the well-known G-series branding for banal anonymity, and "myTouch 3G with Google" just sounds like a skin disease that's gone from bad to worse. 5-6 million new iPhones in production, says analyst

Cox Communications set to launch a cellular network

Garmin provides in-dash navigation system for 2011 Grand Cherokee
It's not quite as elaborate as that 12-inch dual-view touchscreen found in the new 2010 Range Rover, but it looks like Chrysler's 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will come with own its share of in-dash amenities, including a GPS navigation system courtesy of Garmin. eMachines EZ1600, Acer Aspire Z5600 and mysterious Gateway all-in-ones in the flesh
We got a quick look at the new all-in-ones from Acer, and they're surprisingly diverse. The eMachines EZ1600 looks incredibly plastic, and almost perfect as a second computer for the kids; the Acer Aspire Z5600 classes up the joint, but might be a bit too staid in the design department; and an unnamed multitouch Windows 7 Gateway (pictured) for the "high end" of things seemed great outside of its incredibly buggy pre-release multitouch driver. Dell demos multitouch on the Studio One 19
Dell's new all-in-one Studio One 19 is due to start shipping soon, and it's packing some interesting new multitouch capabilities which Dell has been kind enough to demo briefly on video. There's a new touchable launch bar, which give access to Dell's own touch-friendly apps (see the second video after the break), though Dell's Josh Duncan (video one) made sure to reiterate that gestures should carry over to non touch specific apps -- which pretty much means Internet Explorer, from what we can tell. Our own experience with Windows 7 multitouch was none too impressive,

We have to admit that we got excited when we saw this poster, but that's only 'cos we thought it was for the dinosaur rock band from the 1970s -- an appropriate object of some good-natured ribbing, if ever there was one -- instead of some baseball team from Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. News: Canada’s Fido now selling ‘refreshed’ iPhone 3G
Fido, the Canadian cellular provider owned by Rogers Wireless, has begun selling “refreshed” iPhone 3G units to eligible customers. Viliv S5 unboxed and handled in Hong Kong
We've seen plenty of Viliv's S5 tablet PC, but the fine folks of Engadget Chinese have scored some precious unboxing time with the little dude, and it's looking pretty great. The XP-running MID has a 4.8-inch touchscreen, a 60GB hard disk, an Intel Silverthorne-class 1.33GHz Z520 CPU, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and 1GB of memory. It's available in Korea now, though it appears to have missed its European / U.S. shipping dates at the end of March -- but we'll let you know when we start seeing these babies hit the streets. The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a collection of new patents, all revolving around the company's portable devices. Unusual amongst these is a patent for solar power circuitry, which could in theory be used to power iPods, iPhones and MacBooks when away from a wall socket. Acer's dream team confirms netbook Android experiments, thinks it has a "good chance"
At Acer's over-the-top product onslaught event last night, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci and product guy Jim Wong confirmed they'd been playing around with Android in the labs, but didn't think an Android netbook was ready for primetime. Beyond the previously-confirmed Acer A1 Android smartphone, Wong confirmed that they've prototyped android on a netbook, and that "it has a good chance" of making it into the hands of consumers, though he didn't foresee any desktop application at the moment. Corsair's ultra speedy 256GB SSD sneaks out, hits the bench
My, how fast the cutting edge becomes dull. Nary four months ago, we were introduced to Corsair's first SSD: a 2.5-inch 128GB slab of MLC NAND goodness that promised 90MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write speeds. Needless to say, those numbers weren't about to shatter any records, so the company went out and produced something that just might. The benchmarking fiends over at HotHardware managed to scoop up a 256GB S256 from the company and put it through the first of many tests. As for results? Early reports show average read speeds nailing the 200MB/sec mark, while average write rates hovered just under 170MB/sec.

Elan sues Apple ove rmultitouch rights
We had trouble staying awake during law classes in college, and reading lawsuit articles kind of puts us in that same place. This one seems to be a big deal though, at least in the world of multi-touch, something that Apple is heavily vested in. The NYTimes is reporting that a Tiawanese firn, Elan, is suing Apple over some of its Multi-Touch IP:
“We couldn't find a common viewpoint with Apple, so we decided we had to take action,” he said, adding that the companies had been in licensing talks for about two years.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple products including its MacBook computer, iPhone and iPod Touch use technology that infringes on two of Elan’s “multi-touch” patents, the company said in a statement.

IDF: Intel stellt Atom-CPU mit 2 GHz vor

Another court case for Apple
The Taiwanese chipmaker ELAN Microeletronics have filed a suit against Apple in the United States for violation of patent. It is based on two patents describing the means of detecting the position of the fingers on a tactile surface. Apple are charged with violating them in the iPhone and iPod, and also with the trackpad of its portables.
Fortified by its victory against Synaptics Inc, ELAN have asked that the American court oblige Apple to withdraw the products in question from sale. An appointment in a few months or years to know the end of this story.

Does Apple's pricing really need to be at $1.29 for iTunes?
A lot of you seem to be upset by Apple's new iTunes music pricing scheme released today. At first, we were kind of ambivalent but when we dug deeper we can see the point.
Why does Apple need to charge $1.29 when Amazon charges $.99 or even $.79 for the same track. Both are high quality DRM free music files. Apple sells way more music and isn't even trying to make a profit so it isn't a scalability or a margin issue.
Read on why (surprise) the recording industry isn't playing fair with Apple.

Apple sued by Elan over touchscreen patents
Elan Microelectronics, a component design company based in Taiwan, has sued Apple over patents involving display technology, according to Reuters. The company claims Apple has infringed on two of its touchscreen patents with the MacBook, iPhone and iPod touch. Macrumors made an interesting discover when digging into the beta version of the iPhone OS 3.0. In one of the file one can display the following capture:
It seems that the video recording function will be included in the future iPhone OS 3.0. however, it is unclear if it will be available for all iPhone models, including the previous ones, or if it will be limited to the new version to be released in June. Barefeats keeps comparing the new Nehalem-based Mac Pro with previous models. So far, they concluded that 8 Core Mac Pro are faster than single Xeon-based configuration, till they run a Photoshop test. Indeed, in this last test, the 4 core single CPU Nehalem Mac Pro is always about 4% faster than the high-end Nehalem hardware. It is not only true for Photoshop, but also with iTunes. They might be several reason, and one can speculate that the high-end model spends too much time in distributing the task to the different cores. After a little bit of suspense-free rumoring, the 11.6-inch Acer Aspire One is now official -- and pretty lovable. It's an inch thick, boasts a LED backlit screen with WXGA resolution, and runs the usual netbook internals like an Intel Atom processor, 160GB HDD and 802.11 b/g WiFi. On top of that there's Bluetooth, 3G, Dolby Pro Logic Sound and a multicard reader. It's also got a 8-hour lifespan with a 6 cell 5200mAh battery. Boxee releases API and documentation for developers
Boxee has released an API and related documentation, enabling developers to create applications, such as Pandora or RadioTime, that can work with the open-source media player. The set of APIs is known as Python and developers can code the GUI using XML. Users will be able to install new apps via the boxee App Box, which is in the early stages of becoming a formal store.

Acer Timeline hands-on
We just got all friendly with Acer's new Timeline lineup, and while couldn't technically grasp at the hours upon hours of battery life they're promising, we could definitely feel the palpable presence of longevity. The laptops are very much an interesting blance; they're thin, but not astonishingly thin, they're heavy for their looks (especially the 15.3-inch), and they're styled aggressively in some ways while incredibly conservatively in others. We're not sure we're sold on the funky trackpad setup -- the right and left buttons aren't articulated, are sunken below the level of the touchpad, and are rather hard to touch -- but we like that Acer is really embracing multitouch here. Acer unveils 18.5-inch, 23-inch HD all-in-one desktops
Some more tidbits from the Acer event: new all-in-ones. So far, we've got an 18.5-inch eMachines-branded desktop that displays 720p and a 23-inch multitouch variant, both of which the company's touting as Windows 7 ready and boast processor options ranging from Intel Atom to Core 2 Quad. Also announced were 10.1-inch and 11.6-inch netbooks, both reportedly 23.55 mm thick. BMW devises smart car door that senses danger
BMW has already clearly shown that it wants to make its cars as smart as possible, and it looks like that extends right down to the doors, which have now been smartened up with a little help from the Technical University of Munich.
