Video: NES Advantage controller mod for Xbox 360
Sometimes you can't beat the classics. This NES Advantage joystick has been modded to control an Xbox 360, and we gotta say -- this guy did one hell of a job. It's wireless, runs off an internal battery (charged via standard USB), and sports an LED player indicator. If you've never been able to get used to the standard Xbox controller, keep an eye out for this bad boy on eBay. The modster in question has stated his intention to let this one go to the right bidder, but not before he makes another one for himself. AMD softens losses to $416m
AMD tonight showed slight improvement in its performance by reporting reduced losses for its first quarter of the year. The chip designer managed a net loss of $416 million; while worse than a net loss of $351 million for the first quarter of 2008, the figure is less than a third of the $1.4 billion loss reported just in the fall. Monster NVIDIA Card requires 10.5.7 - in May
NVIDIA's latest video card for Mac, the burly Quadro FX 4800, will be available in May. We'll let you drool over the specs on NVIDIA's website. To add a bit of interest, the site says the card requires 10.5.7 OS. We are currently at 10.5.6 and waiting on 10.5.7.
So that means two things: 10.5.7 is coming soon (May is 10 days away) and it will have some video updates that will allow this monster of a video card to do its thing. Requirements below.

Amazon Video on Demand goes HD, comes to Panasonic VIERACast TVs

Amazon Video on Demand HD on Roku Video Player hands-on
Roku hooked us up with an early preview of Amazon Video on Demand in HD for its Video Player, and while we didn't have much time to poke around, but what we saw was mostly impressive. Video took a little longer to buffer in than Amazon SD or Netflix's HD streams on our 10Mbps cable connection, picture quality was noticeably better, although still not at Blu-ray levels. Sprint Mobile recently announced it has added the Sierra Wireless AirCard 402 for PC and Mac notebooks, endowing them with EV-DO Rev. A wireless access. Snow Leopard testing increasing in speed?
The testing process behind Mac OS X Snow Leopard is accelerating, say closely-involved sources. The first developer build is noted to have been released last June, with a second arriving four months later. magicJack getting femtocell version, other upgrades
The magicJack, a VoIP telephony device first introduced in 2007, is about to get a number of upgrades, according to a Tuesday Laptopmag report. The timeliest of these, number porting, is expected to arrive within the next 60 days, according to magicJack inventor Dan Borislow. Toshiba TG02 and TG03 shots surface
We like where this is headed. Toshiba seems poised to capitalize on its incredibly aggressive TG01 form factor, with the TG02 slated for Q4, and the TG03 for some time after that. Towards a Solution for the Bluetooth Problem on New Mac Pro
Following the previous news related to the BT bug on the new Mac Pro 2009, we were expecting that the future Mac OS X 10.5. version will fix it. One of our readers had information and shared them with us:
I reported the bug to Apple beginning of April (among with the 10.5.7 beta version, as I am a developer) in order to speed up the release of a fix. The bug is still present in the 9J47 build, and I am waiting for the 9J50 for Mac OS X Server to continue my test. Indeed the the seed note provided with the 9J50 client indicates: "Fixed issue with Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) ".
We are waiting for further information before concluding that this problem will soon be history with the Mac OS X 10.5.7. However, this update might not be released before the WWDC

GamePark Wiz app store coming this summer
We heard murmurings of a possible app store for GamePark's Wiz open source handheld back when we first laid our hands on it, but now it's officially on its way. GamePark Holdings' awesomely-named Game Contents Open Store is now set to open in August, allowing all users to produce and download homebrewed apps and games for the Wiz. The SDK is currently in development, and there aren't any further details beyond that, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for you.

Twitter on Adium is working well..
We've been beta testing the new Adium 1.4 nightly builds for a couple of days, using the new Twitter functionality. Everything else is mostly the same (except Facebook seems more reliable) It works fairly well. If you want to follow along, go grab yourself the freshest nightly build.
Because the nature of Twitter is much different than other instant messaging services, you have to first let twitter know it's cool for Adium to connect via a web interface. Twitter is also different in that you just get a stream of messages in one window. Had they put each message in a new window, the app would become too annoying to deal with. Will Apple's Mac business sales experience "Shrinkage"?
That's the big question on everyone's minds as Apple's earnings call looms. Everyone from NPD to Gartner has predicted shrinkage. Jibbler voice controls added to iPhone 3.0?
Ars points out that the new iPhone OS has some special speech-related references with a codename Jibbler. It looks to provide voice synthesis and also rudimentary voice recognition for functions like voice calling and possibly more advance featres like voice navigation of Springboard, the Finder of the iPhone.
Our sources turned up references to classes and methods named VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled, and SBVoiceControlSoundCompletion. SB refers to SpringBoard, and VS likely refers to Voice Services. The separate Voice Services classes leave open the possibility that Apple may eventually allow access to these services via the official SDK.

Bluetooth 3.0 + HS gets official, adds speed with 802.11
The rumors were true, and today's the day that the Bluetooth SIG gets official with the latest, greatest version of Bluetooth. Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, as it'll be called, promises to be markedly faster than prior iterations thanks to the reliance on 802.11, which is the same protocol used by WiFi modules, routers, etc. The new standard obviously catapults Bluetooth into a new dimension; rather than being good for nothing more than sending images from one phone to another or syncing a fitness module to a DAP, v3.0 is nimble enough to handle camcorder-to-HDTV, PC-to-PMP and UMPC-to-printer transfers. Tata Indica soon to hit the streets of Norway: it's electric!
We head tell of an all-electric, Norway-bound Tata Indica back in September of last year, and now it looks like it's almost ready to hit the streets. Autoblog Green is reporting that the makers of the super-cheap Nano expect to have the electric Indica rolling off the line either late this year or early in 2010. While the Indica EV (above) that was shown at the SAE World Congress is not the model that will be available in Norway, we can probably expect it to look something like it. ATI Radeon 4850 graphics chipset lockup issue on new iMacs
Apple customers who have recently purchased a new, customized aluminum iMac containing the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics chip have been experiencing lockup issues. The issues surrounding the recent reports seem to duplicate reports from nearly two years ago when a refreshed line of iMacs exhibited hardware issues relating to the graphics chipset interface. Apple later released a firmware update to correct that issue. As of the writing of this article, no firmware update or other fix has been officially released by Apple.

Deutsche Telekom senkt Prognose für 2009
Die Deutsche Telekom hat ihre Jahresprognose korrigiert. Heute teilte der Konzern mit, das bereinigte EBITDA werde 2009 zwei bis vier Prozent unter dem Vorjahreswert von 19,5 Milliarden Euro liegen. Der Vorstandsvorsitzende René Obermann hatte noch Ende Februar bei der Vorstellung der Jahresbilanz 2008 gesagt, das Unternehmen gehe davon aus, sich auch im laufenden Jahr erfolgreich gegen die Wirtschaftskrise stemmen zu können.

Sometimes, iTunes is unable to find media items when searching the music folder. This, generally, occurs directly following a fresh installation of iTunes or after a software update. Similar issues arise when a user moves their iTunes Music folder on their hard drive. QuickerTek has announced an updated external battery/charger unit, designed for the 17-inch MacBook Pro. The 3lb. device can extend the notebook's battery life by as much as 18 hours, and can also charge a Pro while it is still in use. AT&T update their 3G networks
AT&T announced that they are updating their 3G networks in order to increase their maximum data flow from 3,6 to 7,2 Mbits/s. This advertisement is not innocent, since the rumours state that the new iPhone expected in June will reach these data flows.
In France, the operators already use the HSUPA standard at 7,2 Mbits/s. So, hopefully one should be able to profit from the next generation of Apple iPhones.

Nvidia Unveiled a New Quadro FX for Mac OS X.
NVidia annonced the future availability of a new Quadro FX 4800 for Mac. Associated with 1.5 GB of VRAM on a 384-bits memory interface, the theoretical bandwidth will be 76.8 GB/s. It will be powered by 192 CUDA Parallel Processor Cores and offer dual link DVI output. This card will drain 150 W and due to its thickness it will occupy 2 slots. It will be compatible with Mac Pro 2008 and 2009, but not with the very first models of Mac Pro.
In addition, it will require Mac OS X 10.5.7 and should only be available via the Apple Store as a retail product and as a BTO on the Mac Pro. Microsoft and Apple: Ad Wars
We were already reporting about the surprisingly aggressive ads campaign launched by Microsoft to promote PC notebooks (weird for a primarily OS company to support hardware). In those ads, Macs were considered as luxury products sold at luxury prices. Of course, over time Apple decided to fire back. An Apple spokesperson, Bill Evans, commented recent Microsoft campaign: "A PC is no bargain when it doesn't do what you want. The one thing that both Apple and Microsoft can agree on is that everyone thinks the Mac is cool. With its great designs and advanced software, nothing matches it at any price."
Other Apple supporters and analysts go beyond such simple marketing comment, and do the math, evaluating the software cost of iLife and other solutions bundled with Macs hardware and not loaded in the PC notebook purchased by the character Lauren, the laptop hunter in those ads. Oracle Acquires Sun
Sun was desperately looking for a buyer, and recently IBM was identified as the potential candidate. However, the price asked by Sun was considered too high by the computer giant, making it run away from 6.5 billion USD deal. Yesterday Oracle announced that it will swallow Sun for an even higher price, 7.4 billion USD cash. Both companies had a very different interest in Sun. IBM could have dropped all Sun's server divisions to only concentrate on its cloud computing technologies, Java and Solaris solutions. For Oracle, a purely software companies dedicated to database management and solutions, Sun brings additional tools while providing a hardware expansion. So, for Oracle this acquisition looks more as a strategic move and integration than for IBM for which it was kind of swallowing a competitor. Graphics problems with Radeon-based iMac
According to some reports from the internet (including topics in Apple discussion forum) and quoted by Appleinsider, some owners of the recently released iMac, featuring an ATI Radeon HD 4850 as GPU, experienced video problems. The system randomly and frequently freezes causing users to reboot their iMac. According to reports, this issue is not related to the software running at the time of the crash in Mac OS X. In addition, some owners reported to have experienced the problem while running Windows in a Boot Camp partition. The new iMac might be cursed as were the some of the first iMac Alu models launched in 2007, affected by some system slow down issues which were resolved by a firmware update. Let's hope that Apple will quickly find a solution, the fact that it does not affect all similar models indicates a possible bad production batch.

Eine Stellenanzeige bei Microsoft sucht einen "Lead Software Development Engineer" und zwar nicht für Windows 7, sondern bereits für Windows 8. Microsoft möchte hier den Kern des Betriebssystems für dramatische Leistungsverbesserungen überarbeiten. IBM hält Gewinn trotz Umsatzrückgang stabil
IBM hat im ersten Quartal 2009 11 Prozent weniger umgesetzt als im ersten Vierteljahr 2008. Die Einnahmen des Unternehmens sanken auf 21,7 Milliarden Dollar. Der Nettogewinn schrumpfte in diesem Zeitraum trotzdem nur um 1 Prozent von 2,32 auf 2,3 Milliarden Dollar. Der Gewinn pro Aktie stieg sogar um 4 Prozent auf 1,70 Dollar.

1983 stieg Apple als Nr. 411 in die Fortune 500 (eine Liste von US-Unternehmen, rangiert nach deren Brutto-Einkommen) ein. Jibbler voice controls added to iPhone 3.0?
Ars points out that the new iPhone OS has some special speech-related references with a codename Jibbler. It looks to provide voice synthesis and also rudimentary voice recognition for functions like voice calling and possibly more advance featres like voice navigation of Springboard, the Finder of the iPhone.
Our sources turned up references to classes and methods named VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled, and SBVoiceControlSoundCompletion. SB refers to SpringBoard, and VS likely refers to Voice Services. The separate Voice Services classes leave open the possibility that Apple may eventually allow access to these services via the official SDK.

Ugobe files for bankruptcy, Pleo facing extinction
Looks like Pleo couldn't dodge that meteor -- everyone's favorite lovable robot dinosaur company Ugobe has laid off all its employees and filed for bankruptcy. That confirms a month of speculation that things were on the brink -- Ugobe's website has been up and down for a while, and a major supplier filed suit a couple weeks ago for nonpayment. There's a chance that some other toymaker will swoop in and pick up the pieces during the liquidation, but we wouldn't hold our breath -- Pleo owners, feel free to commiserate in the comments.

It's taken almost a year, but D-Link is finally shipping its DXN-221 Coax Ethernet network adapter. Vivace portable music studio features multitouch interface, loads of style
It was not too long ago that we were lusting over OpenLabs' attempt to bring us a dedicated digital audio workstation as a single device, and now it looks like the ante's been upped yet again. Sure, the Vivace is but a mere concept at the moment, but designers Young-Shin Lee and Hae-Jin Jung clearly know what we want. This guy has the same form factor as a laptop, but instead of a keyboard features a second multi-touch display. On the downside, we can't imagine that playing a "keyboard" on a smooth surface would give one anywhere near the control of honest-to-goodness keys. But on the upside? Problems gifting iMix in the iTunes Music Store
People have recently reported an issue regarding the gifting process of their iMix in the iTunes Music Store. At one instance an error message reading, "Your gift did not contain any songs available in the iTunes Music Store," arose. Another user reports only being able to gift one song of the 24 listed on their iMix.

MobiTV demonstrates mixTV mobile DTV service
This one is still only in the very earliest stages, but it looks like MobiTV has taken advantage of the big National Association of Broadcasters Show in Vegas this week to show off a new mobile DTV service that it's developed in partnership with Sinclair and PBS, which it hopes will eventually find its way to a few interested cellular carriers. The service itself is a combination of free over-the-air DTV broadcasts (from PBS and the CW, at the moment) and subscription-based on-demand content, which would apparently be made available for a seven-day window and be delivered via mobile WiMAX. Unfortunately, there's no indication whatsoever of a potential roll-out, but it looks like MobiTV will be working hard during the next few day

Will Apple's Mac business sales experience "Shrinkage"?
That's the big question on everyone's minds as Apple's earnings call looms. Everyone from NPD to Gartner has predicted shrinkage. On the flip side, Apple did release a whole new set of Minis, iMacs and Mac Pros (and even a new XServe) this quarter which usually includes some pent up demand purchasing. Will Apple surprise everyone with flat sales or maybe even slightly higher than last year's figures? We'd love to see Apple buck the recession.
