AT&T re-inserts Slingbox 3G terms
AT&T on Wednesday quietly updated its cellphone terms of service to again potentially ban devices like the Slingbox on its network. Houdini 10 3D software optimizes OpenGL support, more
Side Effects has launched Houdini 10, updating the node-based 3D workflow tool with optimized OpenGL support. Pedestrian Safety Act of 2009 to investigate the dangers of silent automobile engines
As automobiles become more eco-friendly, they're also becoming increasingly quieter which is a good thing, if, like us, you want to live in a completely silent world (the blaring of Mastodon notwithstanding). The obvious problem with quieter vehicles is, of course that they can pose a real danger to unsuspecting pedestrians. Venus wearable monitor could offer alternative to needles
It looks like folks wary of needles now have yet another piece of technology to look forward to, with this so-called Venus device promising to measure tissue oxygen and pH levels without the need to draw any blood at all. To do that, the system makes use of a relatively small sensor that's placed directly on the skin, which uses near infrared light to measure to measure the blood and analyze both the tissue oxygen and pH, as well as the the metabolic rate. iPhone Notes syncing coming in 10.5.7
The latest version on iTunes 8.2 prerelease contains a Notes syncing pane. But you'll need 10.5.7 to use the functionality. So we are going to hazard a guess that 10.5.7 is going to have a Notes updateand is probably coming fairly soon.

Apple adding yet more graphics experts to payroll?
Apple's plans to expand graphics expertise are not limited to the hiring of Bob Drebin, claim sources said to be close to Apple. One of AMD's chief technology officers, Raja Koduri, is likewise being recruited according to the sources, though for what purpose is unclear. Both Drebin and Koduri have a background with ATI, the Canadian video card company now owned by AMD.

Samsung outs STORY Station external HDD
Samsung recently announced the upcoming release of its external hard drive in Korea, the STORY Station, which uses a 3.5-inch hard drive to back-up personal data, music or video files. The STORY Station is encased in a brushed aluminum casing and features only a USB 2.0 interface to transfer data to and from its 1.5TB, 1TB or 500GB capacities.

Mio S401 and S501 nav units leak out, due in May
It's been a while since we've seen a new Mio navi hit Stateside -- Mitac seems to be concentrating on the Magellan brand here -- but it looks like there's still some kick left in those boots: say hello to the Moov S401 and S501. Baby brother 401 will sell for $129 and has a 4.3-inch screen and four million preloaded POIs, while the $169 501 bumps it up to 4.7 inches and 12 million. Both have Mio's newish "Spirit" interface, but we're most intrigued by the repeated mentions of gas price searching and Google Send to GPS integration in the docs we were leaked, which suggest integration with a service like MSN Direct. Vodafone suggests future Android phones could have less Google
Android and Google may seem inseparable to some, but Vodafone is apparently suggesting that some of its future Android-based phones could possibly pack a little less Google and a little more Vodafone. While the carrier unsurprisingly isn't offering much in the way of specifics just yet, it did tell TechRadar that future Android phones could ditch some of the familiar Google services in favor of a more "basic package" that would let Vodafone (or other carriers following the same route) offer their own client software instead -- a winning idea if there ever was one. AMD exodus to Apple continues with Raja Koduri
The Inquirer reports that beyond last week's news of Bob Drebin defecting to Apple, AMD/ATI processor star, Raja Koduri is heading to Cupertino as well.
We've just heard from sources deep inside 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California that Raja is heading there.
Between PASemi, Bob Drebin and other things we can't talk about yet, Apple is building up some serious hardware talent. All they need now is a good reliability person and a fire chief, and things will get really interesting on the hardware front in Cupertino.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i vs. Nikon D5000... fight!
We can't quite recall if the last week in April of 2008 was jam packed with camera introductions, but you can go ahead and pencil this little stretch down as quite an important time in the lives of DSLR junkies. Nary 24 hours after we gave you our pair of pennies on Nikon's D5000, Canon's EOS Rebel T1i (its arch enemy, just so you know) has arrived. Based on specifications alone, the T1i looks like a much more serious shooter than the D5000, though its kit package -- which also includes an 18-55mm IS EF-S lens -- runs you $50 more and omits that all-too-intriguing

Garageband: Gitarre lernen mit Sting

Bericht: Apple gewinnt weiteren Grafikspezialisten
Erst gestern hatten wir darüber berichtet, dass Apple einen namhaften Grafikspezialisten verpflichten konnte, der zuvor unter anderem bei ATI als Chefentwickler tätig war. Angeblich gibt es aber in Kürze noch einen weiteren Wechsel zu vermelden. Demnach wird auch AMDs Chief Technology Officer Raja Koduri in Cupertino tätig sein und Apple unterstützen. Dass Apple nach Bob Drebin nun auch Raja Koduri beschäftigt, ist höchst bemerkenswert.

Apple's Mail application, similar to many modern e-mail clients, contains a function that remembers previous recipients. As more people change e-mail addresses for work, because of a hacked account, being spammed, or just to try out a new e-mail service, it gets harder to maintain your contact list. While many users change or delete e-mail addresses in Address Book, they are finding the old addresses keep appearing in the auto-filled To: field in new messages.

State of Blu-ray support
When Apple announced they were joining or at least supporting the Blu-ray effort, many Macintosh news sites speculated on when the technology would find its way into our favorite operating system. With the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD the arguments would sway, but after the fall of HD DVD, people expected a rather swift adoption of the technology by Apple. To date this has not yet happened, and many are curious about the options they have for using Blu-ray in their Macs. Clues in the code in Mac OS X show that Apple is working on Blu-ray support, but since Apple does not yet support Blu-ray, people who wish to use it will need to use a third-party solution.

AMD's $69 2.8GHz Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition CPU launched, reviewed
AMD already showed us yesterday what kind of graphical prowess could be crammed into a sub-$100 GPU, and today it's attempting to pull the same kind of stunt on the CPU front. Always on the lookout for bigger and better ways to faux-scratch a record with your PC, these students at Northeastern University have developed a human-computer interface that utilizes copper pads and our beloved theory of electrostatics. Duracell lädt iPod mit AA-Batterien
Mobilität wird im Sommer groß geschrieben und das heißt, man übernachtet mitunter auch mal ein paar Tage nicht direkt neben einer Steckdose. Hier passt der inzwischen auch in Deutschland erhältliche Pocket Charger von Duracell wie die Faust aufs Auge. Das kleine Gehäuse ist nicht viel größer als die beiden mitgelieferten AA-Batterien und lädt den iPod-Akku auch auf dem Festival oder mitten im Wald.
Aber immer schön an die Umwelt denken, und alte Batterien korrekt entsorgen (abgesehen davon, dass man sie nur dann verwenden sollte wenn wirklich nötig). Sensitive Object's Anywhere MultiTouch extends touch sensitivity to the whole device
Sensitive Object, a French startup best known for its louche, Gitanes-smoking engineers and its love of cocktail jazz, has just announced the development of Anywhere MultiTouch, a Windows 7-compliant platform that brings touch sensitivity to glass, aluminum, and plastic, through the use of piezoelectric sensors. This product is an extension of the company's ReverSys technology, which recognizes the precise location where an object is touched through soundwaves, with the new platform throwing in handwriting recognition and palm rejection for good measure. Palm Pre: $138 to build according to iSuppli
With the economy in the tank (still) and the heat on, cost and profit margins are more important than ever to companies hoping to stave off the inevitable, apocalyptic doom of recession. Well, iSuppli's released an estimated report of how much its costing Palm to cobble together the Pre -- about $138, as it turns out. iSuppli has positively identified just two of the Pre's suppliers thus far -- that Texas Instruments OMAP chip, which runs Palm $11, and Qualcomm's wireless chip -- but they've formed a general picture of what's under the hood for the estimate. Tin Can: iPhone-Textübertragung via Mikrofon und Lautsprecher
Gestern Kontaktdatenübertragung mit Hilfe von Bump, heute Tin Can*, eine Software zum Übertragen von Texten. Es gibt ja viele Wege, Texte von einem Gerät aufs andere zu bekommen, zum Beispiel via Wi-Fi oder eine Netzverbindung. Intel und Nvdia steigern GPU-Absatz im ersten Quartal
Intel und Nvidia haben laut einer Studie von Jon Peddie Research im ersten Quartal 2009 mehr Grafikchips abgesetzt als im letzten Vierteljahr des vergangenen Jahres. Intels Marktanteil stieg um 2 Prozentpunkte auf 49,7 Prozent. Nvidia baute seinen Anteil um 0,5 Prozentpunkte auf 30,6 Prozent aus. AMDs Marktanteil hingegen sank um 2,2 Prozentpunkte auf 17,1 Prozent.

Sun Microsystems hat im dritten Fiskalquartal 2009 (bis 29. März) einen GAAP-Nettoverlust in Höhe von 201 Millionen Dollar verbucht. Wie Hardmac berichtet, kann ein aktuelles 2009er-Mac-Pro-Modell nun auch nachträglich mit einer AirPort-Karte ausgerüstet werden. Allerdings lässt sich diese nicht selbständig erwerben und einbauen. Stattdessen muss der Mac Pro zu einem zertifizierten Apple-Händler gebracht werden, wo die Karte nachgerüstet wird. SAP meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang
SAP hat seine vorläufigen Ergebnisse für das erste Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2009 veröffentlicht. Der GAAP-Gesamtumsatz sank unter Berücksichtigung von Wechselkurseinflüssen gegenüber der Vorjahresperiode um 3 Prozent auf 2,397 Milliarden Euro (2008: 2,460 Milliarden Euro). Das EBIT-Betriebsergebnis lag mit 332 Millionen Euro 8 Prozent unter Vorjahresniveau (2008: 359 Millionen Euro).

ATi und Nvidia haben jeweils eigene Dual-GPU-Karten im Portfolio, verfolgen dabei aber eine leicht unterschiedliche Philosophie. AMD: Keine übertaktete HD 4770 – Asus stellt vor
Nachdem Asus gestern zum Start der ATi Radeon HD 4770 neben einem Referenzmodell mit 750 MHz Chiptakt/1.600 Speichertakt auch ein erstes leicht übertaktetes Modell mit 800/1.700 MHz vorgestellt hat, zeigt sich AMD nicht gerade begeistert. Airport Card for New Mac Pro 2009 Now Available as Retail product in Certified Apple Centers
If you have one of the new Mac Pro 2009 and would like to add an Airport card, you now can as it finally got delivered to Apple Centers under the reference number: ZM652-0999. However, you will not be able to purchase it and install it yourself. You will have to bring your computer to get it installed by a certified technician, making the cost of such installation much higher than the price of price of the card itself (45 €). As indicated on this photo originating from Macrumors forum, installation is tricky.
In particular the connection of both antennas is difficult. They have to be firmly inserted in a very small connector. As shown on the photo, this card is very similar to the model available in shops and that we used years ago to add 802.11n wireless capabilities

According to AppleInsider, Apple has made Mac OS X 10.5.7 available to its employees on internal servers, indicating that the public release is around the corner. We take this opportunity to remind you some important points when applying an OS update:
Perform a backup before installing the OS update (and/or clone your current system). It will give you the opportunity to come back to the previous version while providing a backup of your file as HD crash frequency is higher during OS update.
If you experience some weird bugs following the update, try to apply the "Combo" update.
If you rely on your computer for Pro and intensive usage, do not update your current system before it has been extensively tested by mass users before. You can also clone your system on a external HD or trial computer then perform the update on this one to evaluate all potential issues. Damaging problems are hopefully rare, however conflicts can make your life difficult to make you loosing a lot of time

Apple released to developers its fourth beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 bundled with iTunes 8.2.
It only took 2 weeks between the third and the fourth beta version, demonstrating that bugs have been rapidly fixed and that the future OS is maturing quickly. The version 8.2 of iTunes is required for activating iPhones with the OS 3.0 beta 4. In couple of hours we should know about the list of bug fixes as well as potential new features.

Amazon will sell eBook to the iPhone
The LexCycle company that offers the software for reading eBooks on iPhone and iPod Touch annouced that they have been purchased by Amazon. This confirms Amazon's intention to become a giant in the electronic distribution of books and does not let Apple hope to take the initiative by proposing this type of solution via iTunes.
Already Amazon made a strong impression with its Kindle that has been a very big hit.

Blu-ray burners at 12x by the end of 2009?
LDS, the joint venture of Philips and Lite-On intended for storage revealed its roadmap for the remainder of the year 2009.
In addition to many DVD engravers that will soon be released, they announced that they will launch during the fourth quarter of this year the first Blu-ray burners able to write a single-layer disk of 25 GB at 12x. At this speed (not yet supported by the standard), and for the price of quality media, the backups to Blu-ray could become an interesting solution, at least a rapid way to burn such volumes of data for storage.
Note that we are approaching the theoretical maximum speed that this format can promise. To burn at 12x, it is already necessary to spin the disk to nearly 10000 rpm. Currently, the engravers of DVD at 22x push the rotation speed to 12000 rpm, the equivalent of a Blu-ray at x14. Beyond this, it will certainly be necessary to reinforce the structure of the disks and to improve further their balancing to stop minor imperfection

Intel has cut the price of the SSDs
As foreseen , Intel announced a significant fall of the price of its SSD in order to counter the competition which becomes increasingly ferocious. The fall is even a little more than than we expected.
The X-25M 80 GB is reduced from $390 to $320
The X-25M 160 GB is reduced from $765 to $630
Even though this is still above the maximum price per MB in comparison with the traditional hard drives, each reduction opens up a little more the number of potential buyers. The increase in the sales thus makes it possible to make economies of mass production and to further reduce the prices.
In a few years tine, the only mechanical parts in the computers will be the fans.

Yep, Apple fans, we now have a big old bag of hurt called Blu-ray in our iTunes. iTunes 8.2 now comes with Gracenote support for BluRay according to the About screen.

MacBook Mini shows up in Adium logs?
How badly do you want to believe? Badly enough to disregard the fact that it would take someone three seconds to fake a computer signature in an Adium log? Yes, we want to believe too, so there it is to your right. Remember, we outed the MacBook Air this way back in January of 2008. But those logs happened before the "Something is in the Air" signs were trotted out so it lent a bit of legitimacy to the whole thing.

Verizon to carry its own Microsoft "Pink" Phone in 2010?
Here's the WSJ story*. The short of it: Microsoft can't handle the iPhone nuttiness and blames its hardware partners for not getting the Windows Mobile implementation right. So they are going to go with an OEM (ironically, probably HTC - which is also a hardware partner) and do it "themselves" - kinda like Google is doing with Android. Which means they'll be responsible for the outside colors (Brown!) and the advertising/product placement/branding. Maybe they'll even *gasp* use Lauren.
Verizon also would like to have something to battle the iPhone, if it can't get Apple hardware.

WWDC sells out weeks earlier than last year
Apple has officially sold out of WWDC passes for the 2009 event, scheduled for June 8th through the 12th in San Francisco. The company sold out of passes for the first time last year, but not until the middle of May. For developers that miss the conference, video sessions will be available to purchase shortly after completion.

Ennova announces USB drive with OLED screen / fingerprint scanner
It's still a little ways from an actual release, but it looks like the folks at Ennova Direct just couldn't help themselves from announcing that they've received a patent for a newfangled biometric USB flash drive that packs a built-in OLED screen. Even better, that OLED screen apparently actually doubles as the fingerprint scanner, which may not add much extra in terms of security, but should be good for at least a few gee whiz moments. The actual patent, however, isn't for that bit of convergence, but for the sliding mechanism that covers the screen when it's closed and pops out the USB connector when it's open. No word on pricing or capacities just yet, but it looks like the first few drives should be available under the ION Technologies brand sometime in the first quarter of 2010.[V

Vinyl has been on the verge of a big-time comeback for ages now (and for some of us, it never ceased to be the format of choice anyway), so we're pretty happy to see that even the land of zany iPhone apps is no longer immune to its charms. Back when we were growing up, we had three cassette players all our own (one in the bedroom, one in the playroom for dancing, and one kept by the back door for travelling) which were tiny, pink, and had the audio quality of of a GBV record cranked thorough a baseball park sound system -- but still, many of us have at least one cassette player laying around the house, sad and disused.
