The 2008 Engadget Awards
Sure, it's March of 2009 but better late than never, right? For your voting (and nominating) pleasure, we present the fifth annual Engadget Awards! The premise is simple: 2008 may have slipped through our fingers, but all the memories of gadgets-past are still with us (some in a more favorable light than others). Here's your chance to sound off on what you loved in 2008, and tell us what you're psyched about for 2009. This year we've got 23 categories up for grabs, with 46 total awards to be decided. All finalists for Engadget Awards are reader-nominated, and the editors of Engadget will then select the best of those nominations (usually somewhere between 4-6 devices or technologies) as finalists. Phenom II X4 mit 3,2 GHz und X2 mit 3,1 GHz
Auf HKEPC sind neue Informationen zu den zukünftigen Prozessoren von AMD aufgetaucht. Demnach soll AMD bereits nächsten Monat den Phenom II X4 955 mit 3,2 GHz und einer TDP von 125 W auf den Markt bringen. Der AM3-Prozessor wird damit vermutlich den vormals ebenfalls erwarteten X4 950 ersetzen, der einen Takt von 3,1 GHz haben sollte.

Neue Time Capsule, Air Port Express in Vorbereitung
Alles was funkt, verrät sich schon einige Zeit vorher durch Veröffentlichungen der US-amerikanischen FCC. Dort wurde nun zwei Anträge Apples zur Genehmigung aktualisierter Versionen der WiFi-/Festplatten-Kombi Time Capsule und dem WiFi-Router AirPort Extreme stattgegeben.

Nehalem Macs, 10.5.7 coming soon, says UBS

Noch eine Aktualisierung: MacBook Battery Update 1.4
Apple hat mit dem Battery Update 1.4 noch eine weitere Aktualisierung freigegeben. Nach der Installation der Software soll sich der Akku des Macbook langsamer entladen, wenn das Gerät ausgeschaltet wurde oder eine längere Zeit nicht benötigt wird. According to the latest statistics released by Net Applications, the iPhone accounts for roughly two-thirds of all mobile browsing. In a recent Vogue interview, Melinda Gates confided that she's battled some iPhone envy in her day: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'." Samsung X360 ultraportable dips below $800 mark

Psion countersues Intel over netbook trademark, asks for $1.2b in damages
Well, this was sadly predictable. Following filings by Dell and Intel with the USPTO requesting that Psion's "netbook" trademark be canceled, Psion has filed a $1.2b countersuit against Intel, claiming that the chipmaker knew Psion owned the netbook mark but used it anyway. Acer K10 pocket projector finally lands in the UK
Acer announced its K10 pocket projector way back in December, but it looks like it's just now finally landed in the UK, and unfortunately received a bit of a price hike in the process. Now retailing for just over £400 (or $560, roughly a $100 increase), the SVGA projector otherwise seems to have remained unchanged since its debut, with it still promising an impressive 20,000 hour lamp life, and offering up 100 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a projected image size up to 60 inches. T-Mobile brings $50 unlimited voice plan to rest of America
Well, that "trial" didn't last long at all, now did it? Just days after teeing up a $50 unlimited voice plan in the great city of San Francisco, T-Mobile USA has reportedly taken said plan nationwide. Users are already buzzing about the widespread availability, though it should be noted that the same "loyalty requirements" from the San Fran pilot are still in effect for the rest of the nation. Samsung BD-P1600 Netflix streaming Blu-ray player pops up at retail
Samsung's new value priced Blu-ray player managed to fly under our radar at CES in favor of its better equipped brethren but that hasn't stopped Dave Zatz and others from stumbling into them at retail lately, like this one sitting on a Best Buy shelf. By making BD-Live required 1GB storage and WiFi dongle aftermarket accessories, you can grab a slim, Netflix streaming, fast Blu-ray loading box for $299. Why are Time Capsules going so cheap? Upgrade coming?
Both Amazon ($387 for 1TB) and the Apple refurb store are selling Time Capsules at steep discounts this week. Apple doesn't usually discount its current products nearly as sharply as this. So why is Apple chopping prices? Is it the economy?

ARM tablet notebook - could be like Apple's
We are just providing this for your consideration. We largely think Apple will move in the ARM direction for their ultra small portable devices this year. These images are from a company who are using similar hardware and are able to charge $299 for this device. Obviously this is a little boxy for Apple's taste but the internals would be comparable. Apple rumor Monday: Core i7 Mac Pro, new Airport Extreme and Time Capsule in FCC, Mac mini box
Lots of Apple rumors today following the weekend whispers of a March 24 desktop hardware event, and they fall neatly along the plausibility spectrum:
First up, we'd say a bump of the Mac Pro to Intel's Core i7 processor is looking quite likely -- famed OS X hacker netkas was poking around in a test build of OS X 10.5.7 and found support files for the chip formerly known as Nehalem lurking about, as well as drivers for ATI's Radeon 4000-series GPUs. If you're making a chart, this one's right up there with an NVIDIA-powered iMac refresh -- it's a pretty obvious move.

GM's Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid hits the carpet in Geneva
As expected, GM just officially unwrapped its new Opel Ampera, the European rebadge of its Voltec-powered Chevy Volt. It's looking pretty "fit," as they say overseas, and will go into production late 2011. Internals are just what we're used to with the Volt, with a 16kWh lithium-ion battery that takes the car 60km (about 37 miles) and a gas powered generator for recharging the battery once depleted, that can extend the range to more than 500km (about 311 miles). Läuft alles glatt, wird Microsofts nächste Betriebssystemversion Windows 7 noch dieses Jahr erscheinen, mit einem für die Öffentlichkeit verfügbaren Release Candidate ist sogar schon im April zu rechnen. Gibson loses Guitar Hero patent lawsuit, gets booed off stage
Well, we can't say we didn't see this one coming -- the US District Court for the Central District of California just ruled that Guitar Hero doesn't infringe Gibson's goofy patent on "simulating a musical performance." Just as we thought, the case more or less turned on whether Guitar Hero controllers are actually "musical instruments," and not surprisingly, the court said they're not -- it called them "toys that represent other items." What's more, the court also found that Gibson's patent only applies to devices which output analog audio signals and not MIDI signals or other types of control signals, so it's looking like other rhythm game

ARM tablet notebook - could be like Apple's
We are just providing this for your consideration. We largely think Apple will move in the ARM direction for their ultra small portable devices this year. These images are from a company who are using similar hardware and are able to charge $299 for this device. Obviously this is a little boxy for Apple's taste but the internals would be comparable. Seagate-Firmware-Bug betrifft auch IBM-Server
IBM hat davor gewarnt, dass auch Server seiner Produktreihen xSeries und BladeCentre von dem Firmware-Bug bei Seagate-Festplatten betroffen sind. Demnach führt der Fehler dazu, dass Festplatten vom Typ Barracuda ES.2 mit Speicherkapazitäten von 250, 500 750 und 1000 GByte nach dem Einschalten eines Servers nicht mehr reagieren.

Pentax readying X70 prosumer cam
Pentax should top its camera launches for the PMA show with its first real ultrazoom compact. Listings at B&H and elsewhere have revealed that the X70 will center on a 24X, 26-624mm equivalent lens with sensor-shift image stabilization. PC shipments set to plunge 12% in 2009
Anaylst firm Gartner on Monday warned that it expects the steepest-ever decline in PC unit sales this year. The company sees numbers continuing to weaken to where the industry ships about 257 million PCs, or about 11.9 percent less than what was shipped in 2008. The figures will eclipse previous drops of 2001-2002 and are directly attributed to the world economic crash, which should slow demand.

GE intros nine new point-and-shoots, no one notices
GE, that iconic brand that has brought so many things to life -- from clock radios to locomotives to widespread air and water pollution -- is back with a new digital camera lineup to amuse and titillate the easily amused and titillated. Both Amazon ($387 for 1TB) and the Apple refurb store are selling Time Capsules at steep discounts this week. Apple doesn't usually discount its current products nearly as sharply as this. So why is Apple chopping prices? Is it the economy?

Vue mesh network video system hands-on
We had a chance to play around with Avaak's new multi-camera wireless video system, the Vue, and we've got to say -- it's kind of neat. The technology -- originally funded by DARPA and developed by the company for the military -- uses a mesh network (dubbed FrameMesh) to allow up to 50 cameras to communicate with a single base station. The premise is simple, you connect the included base to your router, then switch on as many of the cameras as you like; each one feeds its signal back home, then straight to your account on the company's servers where you can monitor the videos remotely. Touch Book from Always Innovating harbors removable tablet, netbook pricepoint
It's not every day we see an all-new angle on the laptop form factor, much less a netbook with aims at innovation. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that a company dubbed "Always Innovating" is trying to spice things up a bit. San Francisco submits permit app for wave power project
San Francisco's been mulling this one over for some time now, but at long last, the city has taken a monumental step in turning nearby waves into energy. Mayor Gavin Newsom has stated that his city has just "submitted a preliminary permit application to the federal government to develop a wave power project" off of San Fran's coast. When the project is fully operational, it could generate anywhere between 10 and 100 megawatts of energy, and it has the potential to create upwards of 100 jobs. Studie: Open Source blüht in Berlin auf

While we still prefer the Micro Four Thirds approach (we love lens selection, so sue us), Samsung's conceptual NX Series is still looking pretty boss for those needing a true (or close to true) point-and-shoot frame. Announced here at PMA, this new "hybrid" camera maintains the slim stature of a standard pocket cam, yet includes an APS-C sized image sensor that is traditionally found on DSLRs. In layman's terms, that means this camera will boast a larger surface area "to gather light and produce higher-quality images than comparable digital camera systems." In unserem Test schnitt die neue Vorab-Version von Safari 4 sehr gut ab. Die Geschwindigkeit war überzeugend, die neuen Funktionen erleichtern das Surfen noch mehr und auch optisch macht der Beta-Kandidat Lust auf mehr. Spansion meldet in den USA Insolvenz an
Der Speicherhersteller Spansion hat bei einem Gericht im US-Bundesstaat Delaware Gläubigerschutz nach Chapter 11 des US-Insolvenzrechts beantragt. Die Telekom hat die letzte Meile ihres VDSL-Netzes nach einem Aufbau von nun drei Jahren auch für die Konkurrenz geöffnet, wie Heise Online berichtet. Morgen startet in Hannover die CeBIT 2009. Die Messe sieht sich zwar als "Marktplatz Nr. 1 für digitale Lösungen, Trends und Innovationen", tut sich aber selbst mit eben diesen Dingen äußerst schwer.
Messegäste mit iPhone oder iPod touch erwartet der Veranstalter auch in diesem Jahr nicht und stellt den mobilen Messeplaner vorrangig für leicht angegammelte Plattformen bereit: Der Mobile Messeplaner steht Ihnen wieder für gängige Geräte mit Palm OS und Windows CE/ Pocket PC/Windows Mobile (PDA/MDA) zur Verfügung. Darüber hinaus werden auch Versionen für Handys(Java) und Blackberry angeboten.

Bitkom: Jeder Zweite findet Leben ohne Internet undenkbar
55 Prozent der Deutschen können sich ein Leben ohne Internet nicht mehr vorstellen. Das hat eine Studie des Branchenverbandes Bitkom ergeben. Unter Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen sagen sogar 84 Prozent, ein Leben ohne Internet sei für sie undenkbar. "Die Unter-30-Jährigen würden eher auf das Auto oder ihren aktuellen Lebenspartner verzichten als auf Internet oder Handy", sagt Bitkom-Präsident August-Wilhelm Scheer. Researchers look to coffee stains for improved TV screen coating
While there's plenty of discoveries that no doubt wouldn't have been possible without coffee, few have been as directly influenced as this latest fit of inspiration from Ivan Vakarelski of the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences in Singapore, who apparently saw the future of TV screens in a coffee stain. Defekte MacBook-Air-Scharniere nicht von Garantie gedeckt?
Die Redakteure von engadget haben in der Vergangenheit eher schlechte Erfahrungen mit der ersten Generation des MacBook Air gemacht und standen zuletzt vor einem weiteren Problem. Nachdem die Scharniere zur Halterung des Displays zunächst ein wenig locker wurden, brach schließlich eines der Scharniere. ASUS to showcase Marine Cool concept motherboard at CeBIT
Check it, OC'ing freaks -- ASUS is apparently planning to debut a new concept motherboard at CeBIT, the aptly titled Marine Cool. The high-end mobo is said to be "unlike any other motherboard on the market," with the all new backplate being the showstopping feature. It's said that the backplate features a "micro-porous ceramic" technology, which delivers quicker heat dissipation than existing alternatives. World of Apple berichtet über einen bevorstehenden Apple Event am 24. März. Dann sollen laut nicht näher benannter Quelle neue Desktop Macs vorgestellt werden. Für die Nachfolgemodelle von Mac mini, Mac Pro und iMac werden seit geraumer Zeit diverse Gerüchte gehandelt.

iPhone führt mobile Webnutzung an
Für die Konkurrenz bleiben (noch) nur Krümel übrig: Net Applications hat für den Februar einen genaueren Blick auf die mobile Webnutzung geworfen und das iPhone dominiert mit großem Abstand. Knapp 67 Prozent kann das iPhone auf sich vereinnahmen, danach folgen Java ME, Windows Mobile und Android. BlackBerry liegt mit 2,24 Prozent noch hinter Palm (2,37 Prozent).

iTunes TV-Serien: Preise und Bildqualität schwanken
Das Angebot an TV-Serien im iTunes Store wächst ständig. Zuletzt haben die Universal Studios noch einmal nachgelegt und bieten neben alten Klassikern wie dem A-Team, Knight Rider oder Miami Vice auch aktuelle Serienstaffeln von Monk, House oder 30 Rock an. Die Preise für einzelne Folgen orientieren sich offensichtlich an der Aktualität des Angebots und schwanken zwischen 1,49 und 2,49 Euro.
Laufzeit und Bildqualität spielen bei der Preisgestaltung wenn überhaupt, dann eher eine untergeordnete Rolle. So kosten beispielsweise aktuelle Folgen der Serien House oder 30 Rock mit 2,49 Euro jeweils den Maximalpreis für Serienfolgen im deutschen iTunes Store, unterscheiden sich aber deutlich in der Länge: während man mit Dr. House in der Regel etwas mehr als 40 Minuten Spaß hat, bringt es eine Folge 30 Rock gerade mal auf die Hälfte der Zeit.

OS X 10.5.7 may support Nehalem, Radeon HD 4000
The upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.7 could support Intel's Nehalem architecture along with AMD's Radeon HD 4000 graphics components, according to netkas. The beta version of the operating system allegedly includes five kernel extensions for the video cards, including the HD 4850 and 4870 chipsets, while enabling Core Image and Quartz Extreme acceleration.

Fujitsu Siemens introduces "zero-watt" Esprimo 7935 PC
Calling it a "zero-watt" PC may be a bit of a stretch, but Fujitsu Siemens is nonetheless breaking a bit of new ground with its new Esprimo 7935 PC, which supposedly consumes no energy at all when it's powered off, as opposed to the one to four watts an average PC consumes unless it's actually unplugged. As you may recall, Fujitsu has already gotten in a bit of practice with its zero-watt monitor, although the PC takes things a bit farther by switching into in a low-power mode for a predetermined time period each day to get its necessary business done, after which it cuts the power off completely. Apple planning a March 24 event?
We're not exactly making plans yet, but word on the street is that Apple's planning a March 24 desktop hardware event. Both World of Apple (which has a decent track record) and a site called My Apple Guide (which we've never heard of but apparently has a "rough" prediction history) say that the event is on the books, and considering the age of the iMac and Mac mini and the uptick in rumors lately, it's certainly plausible. GPS-equipped Sony HDR-XR520V camcorder now available to order
We already knew that Sony's GPS-equipped HDR-XR520V camcorder (and the slightly lower-end HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V models) would start shipping in March, but you'd be rightly skeptical if you thought that meant it'd be arriving closer to the end of the month than the beginning. Xbox 360 red ring of death problems (finally) solved?
Is your Xbox 360 red in the face? No, not that kind of red, but facing that painstakingly loathsome red ring of death? Well, if group product manager Aaron Greenberg knows anything about the situation -- and we'd imagine he does -- then it looks like the guys at Microsoft have finally found a solution to many gamers' worst nightmares. In an interview with Edge Online, Greenberg said that through repairs they've done as well as updated technology, the guys in Redmond are pretty confident that afflicted consoles should be nonexistent in the not so distant future and that they've "put the worst behind us on this."
