GiiNii's Movit Mini Android tablet coming in October, Movit Maxx in January
We were pretty stoked by GiiNii's Movit Mini when we got some hands-on time with it at CES this year, and while the 4.3-inch, Android-powered tablet was originally due out in the middle of this year, the company's now targeting an October 1st ship date for the Mini and January 1st, 2010 for the 7-inch Max. Specs look to be the same as before, although given the new date we'd say Cupcake is now all but guaranteed. Mum's still the official word on pricing, but last we heard the Mini was expected to cost "less than the iPod touch" -- here's hoping the company manages to keep that goal.Filed under

Sony shows 21-inch OLED display, 3D tech in Japan
At the FPD Expo that wrapped up in Tokyo on Friday, Sony showed off a prototype 21-inch OLED display that is nearly twice the size of the current 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV. Hulu iPhone app in development
A dedicated Hulu application is in development for the iPhone and iPod touch, claims an industry executive speaking with Silicon Alley Insider. Like the website, the app should let users watch movies and TV shows from studios such as Fox and NBC. Stone Neo 101 drops into the netbook pond, doesn't cause a ripple
We haven't heard much from Stone since it fulfilled its destiny and bought Rock Computers last year, but it looks like the company is now finally having a go at a netbook of its own, and blending right in with the masses with its just-announced Neo 101 model. As you can no doubt guess, this one packs a standard issue 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 display and an unspecified Atom processor, along with built-in WiFi and optional 3G, a pair of USB ports and, somewhat notably, an ExpressCard slot for a bit of expansion. Verizon's subsidized HP Mini 1000 leaks out

Codeweavers hosts CrossOver 8.0.0 beta 1
Codeweavers has published an initial public beta for CrossOver 8.0.0, an upcoming release of its virtualization software. Users are able to install and run a number of Windows applications from within Mac OS X, eliminating the need to dual-boot a system or confine Windows software to a single window. Windows Mobile 6.5 to officially launch on May 11
Well hey -- it looks like Windows Mobile 6.5 will arrive a little earlier than expected. A post on the WinMo team blog says that the update to Redmond's smartphone platform will officially launch on May 11, the first day of the Tech Ed conference. Of course, after that it's all up to the carriers and handset manufacturers as to when we'll actually see the OS loaded onto devices, but we're sure the hacking community will find a way to satiate the impatient until then -- or until Windows Mobile

LEGO MP3 player: another brick in your kid's wall of sound
So this is pretty out of the ordinary looking. LEGO's recently-announced MP3 player -- produced through a partnership with Digital Blue -- fits in nicely with the rest of the company's kiddie gadget offerings, though we'll admit that this is probably the first one we're truly tempted to check out for ourselves. Leica special edition white M8 spotted at car show in Tokyo
Some keen-eyed fellows at the Audi Forum Tokyo car show were just hanging out, checking out an R8, when bam! The recently announced special edition white Leica M8 appeared out of thin air, ready to impress. We don't know what the circumstances were, or how the cam came to be there, but it's looking really fly, we can tell you that much. Nintendo shares fall after surprising drop in Wii demand
Nintendo may have been denying any rumors of a Wii price cut earlier this month, but it looks like it could possibly be reconsidering its options if this latest sales trend keeps up. Apparently, sales in the U.S. for the month of March clocked in at around 601,000 consoles, or about a 17% drop from a year earlier. During the same period, however, Xbox 360 sales were reportedly up a healthy 26%, while PlayStation 3 sales dipped 15% -- although, in sheer numbers, both were still well behind the Wii. That unsurprisingly didn't make investors too happy, with Nintendo shares falling 6.6% on the Osaka Securities Exchange after the news broke, wh

Verizon releases early data-focused LTE specs, CDMA nowhere in sight
Verizon's got a lot of work to do before it lights up its next-gen LTE network in 2010, and things are beginning to move along: the company just released the first set of specs for device manufacturers as part of its Open Development Initiative. Data detection, push settings show in iPhone 3.0
Minor but significant interface changes have been discovered in the latest builds of the iPhone 3.0 beta, say developers. Among these are new data detectors in several applications, used to automatically convert text into workable links. iConflicker 1.0 für Mac OS X?
Nach Angabe zweier Mitarbeiter des US-amerikanischen Software-Entwicklers Symantec versteckt sich in illegalen Ausgaben von Apples iWork '09 sowie Photoshop CS4 der Firma Adobe Schadsoftware. DivX 7 für Mac steht zum Download bereit
Rund drei Monate nach der Windows-Variante hat DivX Version 7 seiner gleichnamigen Videosoftware für Mac freigegeben. DivX 7 basiert auf dem Videokompressionsstandard H.264, der HD-Auflösungen von bis zu 1080p ermöglicht. Pirate Bay founders get book thrown at them...
In a bad week for pirates of all sorts, the Pirate Bay’s four founders were found guilty of helping consumers illegally download online music and films, handing the entertainment industry a victory in the battle to protect copyrighted material in Sweden. The penalty? One year in (Swedish) jail and $3.5 million in fines. While they probably make the money in a month of ad revenue, the year in jail is a big signal to torrent sites out there, that there are consequences to their actions.
We're not exactly sure why they got in trouble from a legal perspective because they didn't host the files that were illegal, they just pointed to them, something sites like Google do as well.
Chalk one up for the movie studios.

LEGO Boombox looks sweet, still can't make your kid's music sound good
The collaboration between LEGO and Digital Blue has already produced a couple of interesting gadgets for the wee ones, so here's another one to add to the stack. The LEGO Boombox is a decidedley low-techish CD player / AM/FM radio, with two 1 watt speakers, and a few buttons to boot. The saving grace of this little guy is obviously its shape -- which is awesome -- but we really need to know if its going to come in other colors (like hot pink) before we can think about buying it. Toshiba rechnet mit Rekordverlust von 2,7 Milliarden Euro
Toshiba hat seine Ergebnisprognose (PDF) für das Ende März abgelaufene Geschäftsjahr 2008 nochmals nach unten korrigiert. Der japanische Elektronikhersteller erwartet nun einen Nettoverlust von 350 Milliarden Yen (umgerechnet etwa 2,72 Milliarden Euro), was der erste Verlust seit sieben Jahren und zugleich der höchste in der Firmengeschichte wäre. Der Umsatz soll 6,65 Billionen Yen betragen (51,57 Milliarden Euro).

Bridgestone's 13-inch color e-paper display handles pen input, has the future written all over it
While it'll always be difficult to accept innovative technology from a company that makes our tires, there's just no faulting Bridgestone's work in the e-paper space, or their latest color entry, above. The 13-inch display, based on "QR-LPD" tech, has what looks to be great color depth, along with snappy 0.8 second screen refreshes (great for this screen size) and actual Wacom-based pen input. There's video of it in action after the break, and if we didn't know better we'd think they were putting a Sharpie to a perfectly good display. Unfortunately, the image does look a little dim at the moment, so hopefully that's something Bridgestone can improve upon as they approach commercialization -- whenever that might be.

QlikTech has brought its QlikView business analysis software to the iPhone. The app makes use of built-in GPS to provide site-specific business data. Yoichi Yamazaki's latest bot has hungry eyes, nothing else
A quick glance can say a lot, but sometimes its meaning can get lost in translation. For example, there's not a lot of difference between a dirty look and a, uh, dirty look, but Yoichi Yamazaki and cohorts at the Tokyo Institute of Technology hope to quantify that (and many more) by creating a so-called Eye Robot. It's a pair of disembodied eyeballs that create expressions in concert with pink eyelids; a user views each expression and then indicates how it makes him or her feel. Google überrascht Anleger mit guten Zahlen
Der Internet-Riese Google reagierte offenbar richtig auf die derzeitige Wirtschaftsflaute und passte erfolgreich seine Kosten und Strategien an. So konnten die Gewinnerwartungen für das vergangenen Quartal übertroffen werden: Der Nettogewinn konnte mit 1,42 Milliarden US-Dollar gegenüber dem Vorjahr sogar gesteigert werden. Auch der Gewinn pro Aktie beträgt 5,16 US-Dollar und liegt damit über den von Analysten erwarteten 4,95 US-Dollar. Diesen Erfolg hat der Suchmaschinen-Anbieter vor allem seinem Sparkurs zu verdanken, der bereits im vergangenen Jahr eingeschlagen wurde.

Mehrere Organisationen aus dem Bereich der Bürgerrechte und des Netz-Aktivismus haben sich zu einem Arbeitskreis gegen Internetsperren und Zensur zusammengeschlossen. Sie fordern das Abschalten von Kinderporno-Servern: Internetsperren seien nur wirkungsloser Aktivismus zu Wahlkampf-Zeiten. Webserver, die Bilder und Filme von Kindesmissbrauch verbreiteten, ließen sich einfach aufspüren. Forscher finden Hinweise auf erstes Mac-OS-Botnetz
Malware-Experten von Symantec haben einem Bericht des Virus Bulletin zufolge Anzeichen für ein Botnetz aus Mac-Computern gefunden. Laut den Forschern Mario Ballano Barcena und Alfredo Pesoli werden mit den Trojanern "OSX.Trojan.iServices" infizierte Rechner für Denial-of-Services-Angriffe genutzt.

Sony Ericsson weitet nach erneuten Verlusten Sparprogramm aus
Sony Ericsson hat im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. März) erneut Verluste hinnehmen müssen. Nachdem der Handyhersteller im Vorquartal ein Minus von 187 Millionen Euro verzeichnet hatte, belief sich der Fehlbetrag im ersten Vierteljahr 2009 auf 293 Millionen Euro. Angesichts der Wirtschaftskrise kamen auch bei Google Befürchtungen auf, dass es beim weltweit größten Internet-Unternehmen zu sinkenden Umsätzen und Gewinnen kommen könnte. Google steigert Umsatz und Gewinn im ersten Quartal
Google hat im ersten Quartal einen Gewinn von 1,42 Milliarden Dollar erwirtschaftet, 8 Prozent mehr als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Der Umsatz stieg um 6 Prozent auf 5,51 Milliarden Dollar. Darin enthalten sind die sogenannten Traffic Acquisition Costs (TAC), die der Suchanbieter an seine Partner abführen muss. Ohne diese Kosten liegt der Nettoumsatz bei 4,07 Milliarden Dollar, was einem Zuwachs von 10 Prozent entspricht.

ZuneHD Specs?
BGR is reporting some interesting ZuneHD specs, some of which look pretty solid. Notably, it would be the first mainstream device with NVIDIA's Tegra ARM chips that are supposed to blaze. Also, a large, touch OLED screen would be a first in a mainstream electronics device as well. We'll have to wait until August to see if Apple will match these so far imaginary specs.

Problem with Bluetooth on New Mac Pro Models
Several reports posted on Apple discussion forum (here and there) mention a problem encountered on the new Mac Pro. From time to time, without any reason nor relation to the computer status, the Mac Pro will reboot, making all unsaved data lost.According to the first investigation, it could be a bug linked to Bluetooth appearing when peripherals are connected (such as keyboard or mouse). To prevent any problem, it is recommended ti deactivate BT or at least, not use it. However, this can not be considered as the final solution. Apple did not officially reacted to this bug, and many unfortunate Mac Pro owners are now hoping that the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.5.7 update will fix the issue.

You may have thought that the previous world's most accurate clock was good at keeping time, but it's apparently nothing compared to this new strontium atomic clock developed by scientists at the University of Colorado, which is supposedly more than twice as accurate and just as atomic. Wall Street Journal iPhone app hits the mark
The Wall Street Journal iPhone App (iTunes link) just hit the iTunes Store. We've downloaded and are looking through it as we type. It isn't full of content yet but we're sure more will stream in as time goes on. Even though the video section only has six videos, we were able to Walt Mossberg's MobileMe re-review.
While we generally like the NYTimes content better, the WSJ.app does a lot of things better than their iPhone app (which came out almost a year ago). The 'photo flipping' of articles is great and the video works really well as well. A very positive, polished first experience.
If you are a fan of the Journal, this app will make a great addition to your reading collection. (and the articles are free!)

Looks like Apple finally has something to say to Laura, Giampaulo, Lisa, Jackson, and any future laptop hunters showcased in Microsoft's new commercial series. iRobot engineer builds stair-climbing robot for Masters thesis, not release
What does an iRobot engineer do for their Masters thesis? Build a robot, of course -- and, in the case of this one particular unnamed engineer, a stair-climbing robot. Unfortunately, any other details are a bit hard to come by, but it looks like the folks at iRobot were impressed enough with the bot to throw a short video of it up on the company's official YouTube channel. As you can see for yourself after the break, while it is a bit on the pokey side, it certainly seems to be more than capable of performing the task at hand with ease, and with some satisfactory buzzing and whirring sounds to boot.

Verizon: 4G network could attract future iPhone deal
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon executive Ivan Seidenberg mentioned that Apple could be more willing to work with the carrier on a potential iPhone deal as the 4G LTE network begins operation. The technology will also be used by AT&T and a number of other carriers, although Verizon is expected to be one of the first with active service by 2010.

Kyocera shows off preposterous, beautiful EOS folding OLED phone concept
We're big fans of reality and feasibility, we swear, but something like this "EOS" concept phone Kyocera was showing off at CTIA is just too good to pass up.
