Philips GoGear Aria, Opus, ViBE and Mix hands-on, launch info
Philips announced its GoGear Aria and Opus players for Europe back in February, but they've finally got around to showing off the units Stateside, along with offering prices, a timeframe, and a bit of company. The 2-inch screened Aria lands this month in 8GB and 16GB versions for $80 and $100, respectively; the 2.8-inch QVGA Opus does 8GB at $100, with a 16GB model in the wings; the teensy new ViBE has a 1.5-inch screen and comes in 4GB and 8GB flavors for $50 and $60; and there's a new little thumb DAP called the Mix, which is short on details. Apple threatens to block W3C widget standard
Apple is currently blocking the adoption of a new web standard, a World Wide Web Consortium workgroup notes. The W3C is in the process of developing a standard for web widgets -- code embeddable throughout multiple websites. Authors' anti-text-to-speech called discriminatory

Another new build of the Mac OS X 10.5.7 update has been seeded to developers, say sources alleged to be involved with the subject. Leica rolls out truly special Special Edition white M8 digicam
Seems like Special Edition white digital cameras are quickly becoming a trend, and one that we'll freely admit to being fans of. New DroboPro packs eight storage bays
Some people love them (easy to configure RAID storage). Other people hate them (speed, reliability issues). Either way, Drobo is bringing multi-drive network attached storage to the masses. We've covered Drobo and Droboshare and DroboApps before.

iPhone Video Recording screenshot found
Macrumors is posting the screenshot of what appears to be iPhone 3.0's video recording interface. It looks pretty basic but indicates that it will be part of the Camera.app.
The video recording is not presently functional in iPhone 3.0 beta, and the interface is not accessible by default. Only when configuration files were modified telling the firmware that a Video Camera was present will this interface appear.
Other interesting capabilities found in the configuration files include "auto-focus camera", "magnetometer" (digital compass), and "Voice Control"

Analyst suspects Wii manufacturing costs are down 45%
This obviously isn't the sort of thing that Nintendo is going to come out and confirm itself, but analyst Koya Tabata of Credit Suisse has apparently determined, or at least guessed, that Nintendo has managed to drastically reduce the manufacturing costs of the Wii since its launch. Specifically, Tabata says that manufacturing costs are down a full 45%, which would of course also mean that Nintendo's margins on the console have increased proportionally, and that the chances for a price cut are now better than ever, especially in light of the newly cheapened PS2. Fusion-io nabs more funding, teases new PCIe-based ioSAN
Given Fusion-io's dominance in the SSD-on-a-PCIe-card arena, we aren't at all shocked to hear that it just landed a nice fat check in its Series B funding efforts. $47.5 million, to be precise. Huawei to release T-mobile Android G3 in late 2009... probably
This is all starting to sound semi-official, but still a little vague. Huawei's mysterious Android device -- first spotted at MWC -- is apparently headed out on T-Mobile in late 2009, as reportedley confirmed by a Huawei spokesperson. The same details we've previously heard, including the 5 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack and WiFi -- are still on the list, though nothing new is emerging thus far. iPhone 3.0 video recorder interface uncovered
Video recording -- expected to be a key marketing point of the next iPhone -- already has an interface implemented within the iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, reports claim. Latest PSP2 rumor covers familar ground, adds pre-Xmas release date
Not that we needed much more evidence that 2009 would be the year 'o PSP rumors, but Pocket Gamer is now reporting that it has heard from an "insider source" who says that the PSP2 will indeed be released before Christmas of this year. PSA: Advantageous auto-checks Amazon MP3 pricing from iTunes
So now that iTunes variable pricing is live, cross-shopping with Amazon is going to be a Thing -- and while we're certain slicker utilities will pop up soon, for right now we'd install Advantageous, which is just a little script that automates an Amazon search query from within iTunes. Yeah, it's not perfect -- it fails if you're logged in with iTunes store credit and it's far from bulletproof otherwise -- but it's a fine way to at least have kids or the less computer-savvy stop and check prices with at least one competitor before laying down an extra thirty cents on each purchase. Finder not becoming active when Desktop is clicked
Users have been experiencing an issue where Finder is not becoming active when clicking on the Desktop. Symptoms arise when an application, such as Mail or Preview is active and the user clicks on the Desktop (an action that normally makes Finder the active menu bar). New DroboPro packs eight storage bays
Some people love them (easy to configure RAID storage). Other people hate them (speed, reliability issues). Either way, Drobo is bringing multi-drive network attached storage to the masses. We've covered Drobo and Droboshare and DroboApps before.

Apple bringt Xserve-Update mit Nehalem-Prozessor
Apple hat heute ein Update seines Servers Xserve vorgestellt, das mit Intels Xeon-Prozessor (Nehalem) ausgestattet ist. Die CPU wird bereits im neuen Mac Pro eingesetzt. Laut Apple soll der neue Xserve bei geringerem Energieverbrauch doppelt so schnell sein wie das Vorgängersystem. New Xserve
As expected in our previous news when the AppleStore was closed, Apple released the new Nehalem-based Xserve.
Models are available in 4 or 8 core CPU as for the Mac Pro. As we were reporting it earlier, Apple offers the option to have 128 GB SSD as storage unit. The PSU is tagged as 80 + Gold, with an expected yield of 89%, top notch figures.
However, there is something strange. Apple announces 12 memory slots for a maximal capacity of 12 GB for the single CPU model and 24 GB for Dual CPU model. This is really low RAM level for a server. Even if you select the 4 GB RAM modules option, you can not take more than 6 modules this is weird, we need to find out if there is a typo or something very limiting for those new Xserve.

iPhone OS 3.0 is riddled with hints that video recording is on the way, and the latest is is this supposed screenshot of a revised camera app with a video toggle. MacRumors says it comes up when certain config files are edited to make it seem like a video camera is present, but it's not clear exactly what steps have to be taken, so we're treating this one cautiously until we can confirm it. GM and Segway's P.U.M.A. makes its stage debut
We just lived, breathed and experienced GM and Segway's joint press conference, where they "unveiled" the P.U.M.A. one more time for effect. Larry Burns and Jim Norrod from GM and Segway, respectively, talked up what they each brought to the table, and described the vehicle's inception as a partnership.Segway obviously brought the two-wheel mojo, and seems responsible for most of what's being shown at the moment. Studie: IT-Firmen fordern häufig doppelte Berufsqualifikation
90 Prozent der ausgeschriebenen IT-Stellen in Deutschland erfordern ein abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium. Doch das allein reicht nicht. Zusätzlich ist für drei von zehn der angebotenen Jobs inzwischen eine betriebliche Berufsausbildung Pflicht. Gestern wurde es noch gemunkelt, dass die Server mit Nehalem-Prozessoren kommen sollen, jetzt sind die Stores wieder da und mit ihnen das Update der Xserve-Reihe*. Neben einem 2,26GHz Quad-Core-Modell gibt es jetzt auch eine 8-Core-Version mit zwei 2,26GHz Quad-Core-Prozessoren aus der Intel Nehalem-Reihe.

Intel führt neue Logos für seine CPUs ein
Intel hat überarbeitete Logos und ein neues Bewertungssystem für seine Prozessoren vorgestellt, die Konsumenten die Kaufentscheidung erleichtern soll. Server-Version von Windows 7 kommt noch 2009
Windows 7 ist der Nachfolger von Windows Vista und soll das von vielen mit Argwohn betrachtete Betriebssystem demnächst ablösen. Doch wann genau Windows 7 auf den Markt kommen soll, ist noch nicht klar. Eine Aussage von Microsoft zur entsprechenden Server-Variante könne aber zumindest etwas Licht ins Dunkel bringen.

Google Voice: Eine Nummer für alle Telefone, derzeit nur in den USA
Google startet mit Google Voice einen Dienst, der es unter anderem ermöglicht, eine Nummer auf mehrere verschiedene Telefone zu leiten.

Apple Store nicht mehr zu erreichen
Apple hat soeben damit begonnen, die Apple Online Stores vom Netz zu nehmen. Anstatt online Bestellungen aufgeben zu können, wird man mit dem bekannten gelben Aufkleber begrüßt. Zu den möglichen Neuerungen könnte unter anderem ein neues Modell des Xserve zählen, weiterhin denkbar wären auch Anpassungen in Bezug auf das heutige aktualisierte iTunes-Angebot.

DRM-Titel im iTunes Store ersatzlos gestrichen?
Es gab viel Lob, als auch Apple endlich den Schritt weg vom digitalen Rechtemanagement (DRM) wagte. DRM-freie Songs sind seit dem unter der Bezeichnung iTunes Plus zu haben und erfreuen sich großer Beliebtheit, da sie keinerlei Beschränkungen unterliegen und auf beliebig vielen Geräten wiedergegeben werden können. iTunes Store: Ab heute neue Preise für Musik
Wie erwartet gilt ab heute das im Januar angekündigte neue Preismodell für Musik im iTunes Store. Während ein Teil der Titel weiterhin für 99 Cent durch die DSL-Leitung kommt, werden "populäre" Songs für 1,29 Euro, weniger bekannte für 69 Cent angeboten. Ob Apple das Versprechen, den Großteil der Titel weiterhin für weniger als einen Euro anzubieten hält, muss die Zeit zeigen. Verantwortlich für die veränderten Preise sind anscheinend entsprechende Forderungen der Musikindustrie.
In wie weit sich diese Preisänderungen dauerhaft auch auf die Albenpreise niederschlagen bleibt ebenfalls abzuwarten. Bereits jetzt sind bei iTunes komplette Alben ab 4,49 Euro aufwärts erhältlich, für aktuelle Alben müssen jedoch durch die Bank noch 9,99 Euro berappt werden.

Nicht nur in den USA, sondern auch in Deutschland ist heute das neue iTunes-Preismodell für gestartet. Ein Blick in die aktuellen Download-Top-100 (Affiliate) zeigt dies: 14 der 100 Stücke kosten 1,29€ anstatt, wie bisher üblich, 0,99€.

Neues iPod-Buch: iPod Missing Manual
Im O'Reilly-Verlag ist nun die deutsche Ausgabe des erfolgreichen US-Titels iPod Missing Manual erschienen. Auf 304 Farbseiten erfährt man zum Beispiel so ziemlich alles über den Umgang mit iTunes 8 und wird in die Feinheiten der Synchronisierung eingeweiht. GrandCentral-Nachfolger Google Voice für iPod touch und iPhone angekündigt
Google mischt bekanntlich überall dort mit, wo Anwender Informationen über sich selbst bekanntgeben – selbst das Telefon ist nicht mehr sicher vor dem Suchmaschinen-Giganten. Der Dienst Google Voice arbeitet wie eine persönliche Telefonzentrale. iPhone-Entwickler Sean Kovacs hat die App GV Mobile entwickelt, die den Dienst auf dem iPhone und iPod touch verfügbar macht. Noch ist das Programm nicht im App Store angekommen, Kovacs rechnet aber mit dem baldigen Erscheinen.

Australien errichtet landesweites 100-MBit/s-Glasfasernetz

Die US-amerikanischen Apple-Händler ClubMac und MacMall haben Boxshots einer Time Capsule veröffentlicht, deren Speicherkapazität mit 2 GB angegeben wird. Auf Nachfrage von AppleInsider antwortete ein Mitarbeiter von ClubMac, dass dieses Bild vermutlich schon länger und bisher unbemerkt auf der Seite sei. iTunes Store now infected with variable pricing, Amazon still $0.99
As promised, variable pricing has now been implemented at the iTunes music store. Already, we're seeing most of top 10 singles and 33 of the top 100 hitting the top price-point of $1.29 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps AAC). Interesting as Amazon's uncomfortably similar top 10 list has all these tracks priced at $0.99 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps VBR MP3). A handful of tracks (nine in the top 100) do hit the higher $1.29 price further down Amazon's list. Verpackungs-Bild deutet auf Time Capsule mit 2000 GB Kapazität hin
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, waren kurzzeitig Bilder der Time-Capsule-Verpackung im Umlauf, die als Kapazitätsangabe 2 TB (2000 GB) enthielten. Some tests of a SSD RAID 0
As promised, here some tests carried out on the OCZ Vertex RAID disks of 120 GB installed in the 2008 Mac Pro. We compared this disk to a Samsung Spinpoint F1 that, although it is not the fastest of hard drives nevertheless has a good reputation.
To start we compared the start up time of the machine using each volume, from the appearance of apple logo until the time when one has the Finder in hand. It took 32 seconds for the hard drive and half the time for the SSD, 16 seconds.
We then opened an image of 820 MB (size on the hard drive) in Photoshop CS3. The Spinpoint spent 26 seconds to open this image compared to 14 for the SSD.
We then duplicated a file containing 55.000 files with a total size of 4,7 GB. This took 205 seconds for the hard drive and 113 seconds for the SSD.

Australia's A$43 billion broadband project: up to 100Mbps in 90% of homes and businesses
In what he's calling "the single biggest infrastructure decision" in the country's history," Australia Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's announced an A$43 billion (US $30.6 billion) project to create a nationwide high speed broadband network. The goal's to get 90 percent of homes and business up to 100Mbps speeds with fiber optic connection, with a less impressive 12Mbps wireless / satellite for the rest. Up to 49 percent of the funds will be from the private sector; the government will initially invest A$4.7b, while A$20b will come from a national infrastructure fund and the sale of bonds. Nun ist es soweit, zumindest wenn die Kreditkarte aus dem richtigen Land kommt: Apple hat iTunes 8.1.1 veröffentlicht und damit die Möglichkeit geschaffen, mit Mac und PC HD-Filme auszuleihen. Vorher stand das HD-Leihangebot nur Besitzern des Apple TV zur Verfügung. Mangels Filmangebot ist dies für das europäische Festland noch nicht relevant.

GM and Segway's joint venture is probably best described as a rickshaw without all the charm. The self-balancing Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (P.U.M.A.) can reach top speeds of 35 MPH, has a lithium battery that lasts up to 35 miles with a single charge, and features vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication for potentially reducing the number of accidents. WowSkype was just the begining, more big telephony apps are making their way to the iPhone platform. Der Text einer Stellenausschreibung sorgt derzeit für heiße Diskussionen um die Integration einer Kamera in den iPod touch oder gar weitere iPod-Modelle. Apple sucht darin einen "
Camera Engineering Project Manager to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod.".
Natürlich könnte es sich bei der Erwähnung des iPod auch schlicht um einen Flüchtigkeitsfehler handeln, inzwischen jedenfalls wurde der Text der Anzeige diesbezüglich geändert. Als Berufsbezeichnung war von Anfang an lediglich "Camera Project Manager - iPhone" angegeben. (via AppleInsider)

Microsoft: New Zune hardware coming this year
Although none too surprising, it looks like Microsoft's gearing up to release at least one new Zune model this year, according to company man Brian Seitz via his Twitter account. New Memory Interface for Handheld Devices
The JEDEC unveiled a new memory interface specifically designed for handheld devices (mobile phone, digital music player, etc.). Its code name LPDDR2:
Low power consumption with a working voltage of 1.2V instead of 1.8V currently.
Able to manage on the same interface and simultaneously flash and DDR2 type of memory.
Energy saving advanced functions allowing to shut down unused chips.
The working frequency of the DDR2 will vary from 100 to 533 MHz.
Overall, it should save 50% of the energy currently spent by the memory part of such handhelds will improving performance. As it is now a JEDEC standard, it should quickly be adopted by manufacturers and invade the future models of devices to be released in the second semester of the year. High-end products will most likely the first target of this new interface, as the saved energy might be recycled to boost other components.

Six Core Xeon by Year End
The Japanese website PC Watch was invited to a technology presentation delivered by Intel about its Nehalem CPU. Beside the information already published and already commented regarding the Xeon Nehalem powering the new Mac Pro, Intel unveiled some additional details.By the end of the year, the engraving process for the Xeon will move to 32 nm and it should decrease power consumption and/or allow the founder to offer model with higher clock-speed. It will also allow Intel to launch 6 core Xeon, currently known as Westmere. The cache will move from 8 GB today to 12 GB. The socket and motherboard should remain identical to the current one, and should give Apple the opportunity to upgrade its Mac Pro models before 2010.
Some information have bee released concerning the Xeon EX, expected to be launched for Q3 2010:

Future iPhone Camera: It Will Be 3.2 MegaPixel
A recent rumors indicated that the future iPhone to be launched in June might sport a 5 MegaPixel sensor. According to Digitimes, it will finally be a 3.2 MegaPixel sensor apparently provided by OmniVision.However, another rumors indicates that Apple did place an order for a 5 MegaPixel sensor, but not for the forthcoming iPhone. shipping date is later in the year, and might be for a new product.

HTC first quarter earnings fall a not awesome 30 percent
HTC's unleashed a barrel of bad news on the world today with their first quarter earnings statement. The company's profits fell 30 percent during that period, with a net of NT$4.89 billion -- $148 million -- down from NT$6.94 billion (or $210 million) at the same time last year. HTC still managed to best analysts estimates (shows what they know) which forecast that the company's earnings would be in the area of NT$4.64 billion ($140 million). Remember the old days when Microsoft was dragged kicking and screaming into offering Windows XP on netbooks? Neither does Microsoft, apparently, as the company is now all too happy to boast that a full 96% of the netbooks on the market run on its venerable OS. WiFi-equipped BlackBerry Storm 2 coming to Verizon in September?
Looks like you might be able to cross at least one bullet point off of your Storm 2 wishlist. According to unnamed source who SlashGear swears is the bee's knees, the successor to BlackBerry's touchscreen smartphone will add WiFi support for faster home / coffee shop web browsing. The informant hinted there's other surprises on the horizon but wouldn't give specifics, so for now you'll just have to keep dreaming about that SurePress touchscreen that doesn't slow down your texting. Olympus mju 9000 reviewed, becomes the object of faint praise
The kids over at Photography Blog got their hands on that Olympus mju 9000 we've been hearing about -- and sadly, there was nary a Swarovski in sight. Despite that, the reviewer's enthusiasm was palpable. Amazon closing gap on iTunes in actual use
The NPD research group found that 87 percent of digital music buyers in the US last year used iTunes to download music, while 16 percent used Amazon's MP3 store, with some evident crossover among them.
