Intel drops 2.5" SSD pricing, ups 1.8" production
Intel will soon lower prices of its X25-M series of 2.5-inch solid state drives and boost production of its 1.8-inch SSDs, according to a Tuesday DailyTech report. The 160GB X25-M, which uses mulit-level cell flash memory, is now priced at $630 after launching for $945 last December, and is due to get another $100 price cut soon, while the 80GB version of that drive will fall to $270, down $50. Surprise! The American Cable Association favors tiered broadband pricing
Guess what everybody? Time Warner Cable isn't the only one who thinks tiered broadband is the future -- so does the American Cable Association (ACA). The group claims that a stepped set of packages is the only way in which the high-speed industry can survive the coming hellstorm of your online TV viewing and rampant MP3 downloads. According to ACA president Matt Polka, "the outcome is certain," that metered pricing is on the way -- even if there aren't standardized plans in place yet. The ACA's ex officio chair Patrick Knorr adds that current billing models are "not a sustainable business model," and that "a la carte for the net is consumption-based billing."

Mockup shows HTC Snap for Verizon
A version of the Snap QWERTY smartphone from HTC, albeit likely with CDMA and GSM network support, is one step closer to its release at Verizon, as a rendering of it has been spotted. Flash Optimizer 2.0 adds improvements, support
Eltima has released an update to its Flash compression utility, Flash Optimizer for Mac 2.3. The program compresses sounds by converting stereo to mono and lowering bitrates, while video is scaled back by shrinking bitrate and frame size. ZillionTV's ZBar and ZRemote crash down in FCC's database
While a nationwide launch of the ad-based ZillionTV streaming service isn't expected until Q4 of this year, it's good to see that things are obviously on track. Just today, both the ZBar and ZRemote (shown after the break) -- two crucial hardware components to the system -- have splashed down in the FCC, giving those who just can't shove enough set-top-boxes under their television hope that one more is destined for US shelves. Granted, an FCC appearance doesn't guarantee an immediate market presence, but obviously the beta testing and collaboration with ISPs has been going well.

In the UAE a new, Apple-based magazine called Shufflegazine has launched at a time when many magazines are closing down. Video: Moto Lab's multitouch display scalable up to 50-inches
When the heads over at the Moto Dev Lab aren't busy outfitting E-Ink devices with Android, they can often be found looking for bigger, better, and cheaper ways to build multitouch surfaces -- and they seem to be on to something. The video below shows full multitouch on a 19-inch display, although the company promises it is scalable up to at least 50-inches -- and it does this without the bulky projector. Hard-drive noises
Whenever mechanical hard drives are accessed, various noises will be heard, including clicking, whirring, and the occasional "grinding," which is just a series of subtle click sounds close together. These sounds happen because the drive platters are spinning up, and the head is being swiftly moved from position to position on the drive and then seated back in a secure location. As such, if the drive is spun down and you access it, you may hear something like a whirr (platter spinning up) followed by a click (heads unseating) and a subtle grinding noise (heads navigating rapidly), then another click (heads seating). Depending on the applications used, drives may make different levels of these sounds.

Firefox 3.0.10 update remedies stability
Only days after the release of v3.0.9, Mozilla has posted a another update for Firefox, bringing the web browser to v3.0.10. The update is mainly intended to fix a "major stability issue," but also fixes a security flaw related to the @nsTextFrame::ClearTextRun() command. It is available as a 1.5MB download through the Firefox auto-updater, or else from the Mozilla website.

Verizon to carry its own Microsoft "Pink" Phone in 2010?
Here's the WSJ story*. The short of it: Microsoft can't handle the iPhone nuttiness and blames its hardware partners for not getting the Windows Mobile implementation right. So they are going to go with and OEM (ironically, probably HTC - which is also a hardware partner) and do it "themselves" - kinda like Google is doing with Android. Which means they'll be responsible for the outside colors (Brown!) and the advertising/product placement/branding. Maybe they'll even *gasp* use Lauren.
Verizon, also would like to have something to battle the iPhone, if it can't get Apple hardware.

After offering Sugar for the past while as an interface to run on top of your Linux distro of choice, Sugar Labs is prepping "Sugar on a Stick," a Fedora 11-based LiveUSB distro that boots most any PC from a 1GB+ USB stick and lets a user carry their Sugar environment, files and settings wherever they roam. While the beta is currently up for download, there seem to be plenty of kinks to work out, but as the team expands and refines hardware support, we could see this potentially being more of a boon for education than the XO-1 itself; turning any PC into a Sugar PC, not just the dramatically green ones. Little progress made on Louvre Apple Store?
Progress is so far slow or non-existent on Apple's Parisian retail store near the Louvre, photos supplied by a MacNN source suggest. The photos, taken on April 24th, show an essentially empty space, without any evidence of the forthcoming occupation by Apple. The site also appears to lack any sign of active construction, though surfaces are clean and possibly ready for tiles and paneling.

Raser Technologies develops 100MPG Hummer H3 just to spite Al Gore
That's right: last week at SAE World Congress, Raser Technologies unveiled a prototype Hummer H3 that gets 100 miles to the gallon. Insane, right? We agree. Raser partnered up with FEV to turn the famously non-environmentally sound gas guzzler around. The prototype boasts an E-REV power train engine, and three lithium ion battery packs under the rear of the vehicle. The batteries provide enough juice for about 40 miles, when the range extender starts up, providing an additional 400 miles -- averaging about 100 MPG -- before it needs to be plugged in again. MacBook Mini shows up in Adium logs?
How badly do you want to believe? Badly enough to disregard the fact that it would take someone three seconds to fake a computer signature in an Adium log? Yes, we want to believe too so there it is to your right. Remember, we outted the MacBook Air this way back in January of 2008. But those logs happened before the Air was named so it lended a bit of legitimacy to the whole thing. Could Apple have made the same stupid mistake twice? Perhaps.

The NYTimes' Jenna Wortham is reporting that an as-yet unreleased Compete study proves that iPhone users don't use their devices for work. Well, that's not what the study really says. But the title of the story is an eye grabbing: "Apple iPhone Owners Don’t Use It For Work"

"73 percent of iPhone owners used their mobile devices primarily for personal reasons, such as entertainment. Cablevision loves you, will offer $99 101Mbps uncapped internet service
It's been a rough week or so for Big Cable, but it looks like the East Coast's Cablevision's decided to play things a little differently than Comcast and Time Warner: it's just announced that uncapped 101Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 service will be rolling out on May 11 across its entire service area. The best part? It'll cost $99 a month, making it faster and cheaper than any other high-speed package we can think of -- 50Mbps service from Comcast and Verizon is around $140. Not bad at all --

Vodafone's HTC Magic gets unboxed on video
While white seems to have been the color of choice for most official demos of the HTC Magic, there's also a black version headed to Vodafone (and other carriers, eventually), and the folks at Netbooknews.de got their hands on one of those once mythical handsets for a video unboxing. iPhone apps: Find a Bank, Die Hard, I Heart Concerts
Find a Bank ($1) uses the iPhone and iPod touch's built-in location services to locate the user and then provide them with information on all of the closest banks. NEC and Renesas looking to join forces against semiconductor evil
We're always up for a good semiconductor merger, and it looks like NEC Electronics and Renesas are prepping the biggest one we've seen this week. The two companies have agreed to team up, creating a combined force of $13 billion in yearly sales, and the largest chip company in Japan -- Renesas was already the product of a chip merger between Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric. They'll still be behind Intel and Samsung in the overall game, but we won't hold that against them. Tokyo analysts believe this might lead to other "defensive" mergers by other Japanese chipmakers, but we won't get ahead of ourselves. E-Plus steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
E-Plus hat seinen Umsatz im ersten Quartal 2009 gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 2,5 Prozent von 755 auf 774 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Seagate launched new series of 2.5" external HD known as Replica.
Similarly to the Time Machine function of Mac OS X, those external HD are bundled with a software taking care of the entire backup of the PC. In case of crash of the computer, it is possible to recover the environment corresponding to the last backup. Seagate offer 2 models, one dedicated to single user (250 GB) and a larger unit (500 GB) able to manage backup of several user environment. Of course, the backup software is only compatible with Windows, but if you have Mac OS X 10.5, Time Machine does the same job independently of the manufacturer of your external storage unit. Apple Sued by the Electronic Frontier Foundation
Last Monday, a lawsuit against Apple was filed jointly by the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and attorneys representing the website Bluwiki.com.The reason behind such legal action begins in November 2008 when Apple Legal forced Bluwiki to remove information on its server about a project entitled iPodhash. Based on reverse engineering, this project aimed to find a way to use an iPod without requiring iTunes to be installed on the computer, as the Linux version of this software does not exist. While apple Legal was using the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to force Bluewiki to remove this information, the same law states that reverse engineering can be used to allow interoperability of products, and this is precisely what the iPodhash was about. Indeed, iPodhash did not imply removing DRM from music tracks, but simply make it possible to use an iPod with any other media managing application, on any OS. People have been noticing that their external hard drives continue to spin even when they have stopped using the drive. Some Time Machine users are concerned that the drive was being accessed by another, unauthorized application or because of a bug. Tackling kernel panics, hangs, and unexpected quits.
In the Classic Mac OS, when an application crashed it would usually take down the whole system, requiring a hard reset. Apple largely tackled this in OS X by basing the system off of a UNIX kernel, which basically runs each system process more independently, almost like individual applications. Memory is protected and other resources are shared rather than taken over and as such, an individual application or system process shouldn't take down the whole system when it crashes. There are several crash scenarios that will happen in OS X, and while most should not take down the system, there are a couple that can.

Apple LED Cinema display issues and options
The new LED-backlit Apple Cinema displays have been out for a number of months, and so far have shown only a few known issues. On the plus side, the displays have sharper pixels due to the glass paneling; however, this benefit is weighed by the individual user's preferences for a glossy versus matte surface finish. Additionally, the increased brightness and contrast make multimedia viewing quite pleasing to some. Despite these benefits, and arguments about whether or not glossy is better than matte, there have been a couple of problems you should look out for if you are purchasing one of these displays.

Creative's cheap Zen MX even bores paid product models
Well what do you know Creative's still in business and pumping out yet another variation of its Zen media player. The Zen MX features the same played design that Creative's been pushing since 2007 including a 2.5-inch, 320 x 240 pixel display, and SDHC expansion. Gerüchte um kleineres iPhone und Apple Media Pad
Etwas mehr als einen Monat vor der am 8. Juni in San Francisco beginnenden Apple Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC kommt ordentlich Bewegung in die Gerüchteküche.
Laut Quellen der BusinessWeek spricht Apple derzeit mit dem US-Mobilfunkkonzern Verizon über den gemeinsamen Vertrieb von zwei neuen Geräten: Einem kleinen und günstigen Mobiltelefon, auf das die Beschreibung "iPhone lite" ganz gut passen soll, sowie einem als "Apple Media Pad" bezeichneten Gerät, dass sich von der Größe her irgendwo zwischen dem iPhone und einem Netbook bewegt und dessen Oberfläche komplett aus einem berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirm besteht. Von der Funktionalität her darf man sich das Gerät als vergrößerten iPod touch vorstellen, also Musik, Fotos, HD-Video und - dies erwähnt die BusinessWeek explizit - Telefonate über Wi-Fi.

Toshiba stellt erste 32-nm-Flash-Chips vor

HP unveils ProBook s-series laptops for the businessperson who needs a bit more power
HP's adding a little bit of freshness to its portable lineup this evening with the new ProBook s-series, designed as affordable business-centric laptops but should be capable of pulling off a decent game or two for those long flights. The 14-inch 4410s and 4415s pack Intel / AMD processors, respectively, optional Blu-ray drive, HDMI port, and choice of GMA X4500HD or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330. The 15.6-inch 4510s (Intel) and 4515s (AMD) includes an optional mobile broadband connectivity module and an integrated numeric keypad. Grandaddy of them all 4710s lacks the mobile broadband and AMD processor options but does sport a larger 17.3-inch screen. Future Intel 32-nm CPU will Be at least 10% Faster
Over the last two weeks, Intel started distributing samples of tis future 32-nm engraved CPUs to its main customers and OEM.
Those CPUs will be available in 2 different series. Havendale for notebooks and Clarkdale for entry-level desktop. First test have already been performed with Clarkdale. When using SuperPI as a performance scale, it is 10% faster than the current fastest Core 2 Duo clocked at the same frequency.This test provides information about the advantages provided by the Nehalem architecture. First 40-nm Engraved Radeon HD 4770 Arrive Today
The official availability date of the AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4770 is today. This entry-level card should be priced less than 100 USD and is the first desktop GPU to be engraved at 40-nm. Beside power saving associated with its manufacturing process, leading to lower price, it should deliver an excellent performance/watt performance ratio. As expected, it will compete with the NVidia GeForce 9800 GT while draining 2x less power. Windows 7 Will Allow Windows XP Virtualization
Transition between operating system is usually a difficult time. In the past Apple offered solution to launch Mac OS 9 inside Mac OS X, and later on to run PPC code code on Mac Intel. In order to allow its customers to slowly move from XP to Windows 7, Microsoft will offer a virtualization solution to run XP in Win 7 Pro version. This is not something new for Microsoft as it allowed the company to offer Virtual PC for years on our Mac.With such strategy, Microsoft expects to convince most Win XP users to migrate without any risk to the new Windows version when it will be available. While Waiting for Snow Leopard, Open CL and Grand Central...
With the release of a new beta version of Snow Leopard to developers, some have noticed that QuickTime X will be able to make video capture from the desktop, or to directly submit a video to YouTube.
If this information can make some websites jumping into the sky, we are far from having the tools of a true rock solid new basis of the OS: Open CL, Grand Central, Apple did not release any information to beta testers, most probably because there are still plenty of work to be done, and to prevent releasing crunchy information about the potential of such core elements of the future OS. One will likely have to wait for the WWDC to get first details, as Apple will have unveil a bit part of its future OS to the developers to help them to get prepare for Snow Leopard and be able to benefit and code appropriately. Video: UK Home Secretary delays 1984 by a few years
The UK Home Secretary (whatever that is) has put the kibosh on plans for a giant government database that would track all of the country's emails, phone calls and internet activity. But not so fast, civil libertarians! According to the Telegraph, the onus will merely shift to the private sector -- with telecoms and Internet providers being required to retain the data, at a cost of around £2 billion (over $2.9 billion US). UMID M1 unboxed ahead of Australian launch
Still no US release in sight, but UMID's M1 has now set the course for the land down under in the not-too-distant future. Pocketables has managed to get its hands on a non-HSDPA retail version to take it through the unboxing and review motions. The pictures are a good reminder at just how tiny this thing is, especially compared to the jacket pocket fave Vaio P. Unfortunately, it's also got a rather awkward set of adapters for USB and what appears to be headphones, as seen in the picture above. Australian retailer Justek's got the unit available for pre-order now, but you might want to glance at that $930 to $1426 price range before you impulsively hit the "pre-order now" button.

Skytone's Alpha 680 tablet, Android interface gets underwhelming hands-on treatment
We're still not sold on the $250 price tag for Skytone's Android-powered Alpha 680, and these video hands-on of the tablet / netbook from netbooknews.de don't help. Apple LED Cinema display issues and options
The new LED-backlit Apple Cinema displays have been out for a number of months, and so far have shown only a few known issues. On the plus side, the displays have sharper pixels due to the glass paneling; however, this benefit is weighed by the individual user's preferences for a glossy versus matte surface finish. Additionally, the increased brightness and contrast make multimedia viewing quite pleasing to some. Despite these benefits, and arguments about whether or not glossy is better than matte, there have been a couple of problems you should look out for if you are purchasing one of these displays.

Sonnet has released the Fusion R400P, a four-drive RAID SATA rackmount storage system. The system supports RAID 0, 1, and JBOD and arrives in a 1U rackmount enclosure. It is available in configurations from driveless to 6TB and has an eSATA single-cable port. Researchers tout plans for moon greenhouse, Silent Running sequel
The Google Lunar X Prize obviously hasn't drawn quite the same number of competitors as some of the more Earthbound X Prizes, but it looks like things are starting to heat up a little bit, with Paragon Space Development recently teaming up with Odyssey Moon in an effort to deploy the first greenhouse on the surface of moon.
