Wow, it's been a great day for camera nerds -- the Nikon D5000 got a ship date, the Canon Rebel T1i started arriving in stores, and now the Panasonix Lumix DMC-GH1's been unboxed. That's a hat trick of hotly-anticipated DSLRs* right there, and the GH1 might be the most anticipated of the bunch. Navy shells out for development of missile-killing free-electron laser
You may think that the Navy's just the baby brother to the two other US Armed Forces, but its weapon development record definitely shows otherwise. Just over two years after building an 8-Megajoule railgun, the branch has penned two $7 million checks to defense contractors Boeing and Raytheon for the design and development of a free-electron laser (FEL). For what it's worth, such a device has been yearned for since a day after the dawn of time, as unlike chemical-based lasers, the FEL would be 100 percent electric and easier to move. Canon Rebel T1i trickling out to stores
Sure, the Nikon D5000 might have gotten itself a ship date today, but Canon's Rebel T1i is doing one better and actually turning up in stores a couple weeks ahead of its scheduled mid-May debut. Appeal court stays RIAA's Albany student lawsuit

First Ion-based netbooks reportedly on track for June debut
Nothing is completely official just yet, but Pocket-lint is reporting that its inside source at NVIDIA has "confirmed" that the initial batch of Ion-based netbooks will be announced at the big Computex trade show at the beginning of June, and that the first few netbooks could start shipping "as early as July." Of course, there's no word on any specific companies involved just yet, with the source only going so far as to say that the announcements will come from some "key players." Look: there are purses, and then there are purses. Well, this one is none of those things. It's a decent looking bag to begin with, but then well, things get really fantastic. iPhone moves up to 1.5% world market share

Laut electronicpulp.net hat ein anonymer Hacker das MobileMe-Konto der Hollywood-Schönheit Salma Hayek geknackt. Möglich wurde dies durch die "Forgot password?"-Option auf Apples MobileMe-Portal. Das Konto mit dem Namen "shayek" war schnell gefunden, auch die Abfrage nach dem Geburtsdatum beantwortete der Hacker, Wikipedia sei Dank, relativ zügig. In dem darauf folgenden Dialog musste lediglich die Frage nach Salma Hayeks Lieblingsfigur mit "frida" beantwortet werden, um Zugriff auf persönliche E-Mails, Kontaktdaten und eine ganze Reihe anderer Informationen zu erhalten. Apple cuts 1600 maddays from Apple Stores
The quarter wasn't all roses for Apple. Turns out, it has been reducing employee hours at the Apple Store to the tune of 1600 equivalent jobs. We say 'equivalent' because not all workers were full time. Currently Apple Retail employs 14,000 full-time equivalent workers, down from 15,600 at the end of Apple's first fiscal quarter, according to a filing with the SEC. The reduction of numbers wasn't a result of any particular directive or massive layoff, Apple just slowed hiring as the normal high turnover of retail lowered job numbers.

In the future we envision artificial muscle driving our cybernetic soldiers and helping to repair our fleshier ones. Studie: Amazon rückt auf Platz eins der Shopping-Webseiten vor
Mit hochgerechnet 16,7 Millionen Internet-Käufern hat sich Amazon im letzten Jahr an die Spitze der Websites mit den meisten Online-Käufern gesetzt. Eine Million Google-Telefone in den USA
T-Mobile hat seit dem Start im Oktober 2008 eine Million Android-Telefone in den USA absetzen können. Zum Vergleich: AT&T hat allein im 1. iWork-Trojaner: iBotnet macht Macs zum Botnet
Im Januar machte ein Mac-Trojaner die Runde, der über eine Kopie der iWork-Trial verbreitet wurde. Versteckt war dieser im Installationspaket. Jetzt haben Symantec-Mitarbeiter herausgefunden, dass dieser Trojaner, iBotnet, die befallenen Rechner an ein Botnet anschließt. Dieses Netzwerk kann vom Macher des Programms dann kontrolliert werden.

Wirtschaftskrise erreicht Microsoft
Wie heise berichtet, muss Micrsosoft zum ersten Mal in in der Unternehmensgeschichte einen rückläufigen Umsatz im Vorjahresvergleich verbuchen. Der Umsatz ging im Vergleich zum dritten Geschäftsquartal 2008 von 14.454 Millionen US-Dollar auf 13.648 Millionen US-Dollar zurück. Der Nettogewinn sank im Vergleich von 4..388 Millionen auf 2.977 Millionen US-Dollar.

Western Digital meldet drastischen Gewinnrückgang
Western Digital hat im dritten Fiskalquartal 2009 (bis 27. März) einen Nettogewinn von 50 Millionen Dollar oder 0,22 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Apple verteilt neuen 10.6-Build an Entwickler
Apple hat den registrierten Entwicklern gestern einen neuen Mac-OS-X-10.6-Snow-Leopard-Build zum testen zur Verfügung gestellt. Kabel BW erhöht Zahl der Internetkunden um mehr als 50 Prozent
Kabel BW hat im ersten Quartal 2009 seine Kundenzahl deutlich gesteigert und die positive Entwicklung des Vorjahres fortgesetzt. Die Zahl der Internet- und Telefonkunden wuchs im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal 2008 (270.000) um 53 Prozent auf 415.000. Damit versorgt Kabel BW 18 Prozent aller 2,3 Millionen TV-Kunden mit Internet und Telefonie zum Pauschalpreis.

Amazon steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
Amazon hat seinen Umsatz im ersten Quartal 2009 (bis 31. März) gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 18 Prozent auf 4,89 Milliarden Dollar gesteigert. Nach 10.5.7 bekommt nun auch die Entwicklerversion von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard ein Update. Novum: Microsoft mit Umsatzeinbruch
Zum ersten mal in Microsofts 23-jähriger Geschichte als Aktiengesellschaft erlitt die Redmonder-Firma einen Year-over-Year-Gewinneinbruch. Microsofts Nettoeinkommen betrug im vergangenen 3. Apple hat, wie bereits vor einigen Tagen vorausgesagt, nun eine neue Preview von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard an Entwickler verteilt. Build 10A335 löst damit den drei Wochen alten Build 10A314 ab, wobei unklar ist, wo genau Änderungen gemacht wurden. Microsofts Gewinn bricht im dritten Quartal um 32 Prozent ein
Microsofts Gewinn ist im dritten Geschäftsquartal (bis 31. März) um 32 Prozent auf 2,98 Milliarden Dollar eingebrochen. Der Gewinn pro Aktie sank gegenüber dem Vergleichsquartal des Vorjahres um 30 Prozent auf 0,33 Dollar je Aktie. In dem Ergebnis enthalten sind Abschreibungen auf Investitionen in Höhe von 420 Millionen Dollar und Kosten von 290 Millionen Dollar für Abfindungszahlungen an 5000 gekündigte Mitarbeiter.

Safari mit individueller Lautstärke für Websites?
iTunes hat einen, der QuickTime Player auch und wenn dem Patentantrag von Apple eine echte Umsetzung erfolgt, ist Safari als nächstes dran mit einem Lautstärkeregler. Das Web ist nämlich längst nicht mehr so still, wie es einmal war. Besonders problematisch sind Websites, die Sound und Musik abspielen, ohne dass es der Anwender erwartet. Nicht nur wer gerade im Hintergrund Musik laufen lässt, fühlt sich durch 30-Sekunden-Gedudel in der Schleife aus dem Flash Player genervt.

Im neuen Build 9J56 kommen fünf weitere Fixes zur mittlerweile 108 Bug-Fixes und Änderungen enthaltenden Release-Note-Liste hinzu. Microsoft reported its first fall in sales since going public 23 years ago. Sales fell by 6% annd profits by 32%. Microsoft makes most of its profit selling Windows and business software such as Office.

While we still don't have an official release date for HTC's Touch Pro2 here in the states, the folks at Russian site Mobile-Review have managed to get some extensive hands-on time with the unit. Apple and AT&T Plans to Continue their Exclusive Partnership
As we reported it earlier, Apple and AT&T are discussing about their current exclusive partnership and its potential extension for the coming years. The current one runs till 2010 and while AT&T would like to extend it further, Apple might be tempted to offer its iPhone to a larger number of customers in USA. Microsoft Releases a New Windows 7 Beta to OEM
In order to stay on rack to its roadmap, Microsoft is pushing hard on Windows 7 development, and just released a new build, know as Windows 7 RC 7100 and started distributing it to its OEM partners and exclusive customers. To prevent geeks or pirates to distribute it over the P2P networks, and/or find it associated with embedded malware or Trojan, Microsoft seems to plan a semi-public release for May 5th, however information might not be fully reliable on that point.

NVidia Denies Rumors Regarding Potential Investment in VIA
While we have been reporting earlier that NVidia might be considering more than just a partnership with VIA, Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO and president of NVidia dismissed investment rumors. He indicated that the current partnership is only focusing on delivering support for VIA CPUs for the upcoming Ion 2 chipset platform, and that the company has no plan to make any investment in VIA. Bluetooth 3.0 in our iPhone Earlier than Originally Thought!?
If in the official press release we were commenting yesterday, Bluetooth 3.0 was not expected to be massively available before beginning of 2010, things might be different for some Apple products, and might arrive faster than expected. Indeed, according to an official press release from Broadcom the BCM4325 chips is already compatible with the BT 3.0 format.

Seagate Unveiled its Green 2 TB HD Offer
To catch up with Western Digital, Seagate announced the availability of a new models of its low power consumption 3.5" HD series.
In order to obtain better figures than its competitors, those HDs only spin at 5900 rpm, instead of 5400 rpm, as it would offer a better compromise performance/power consumption. Those drives feature 32 MB of cache and will be available with different capacities varying from 1.0 to 2.0 TB. They will drain between 3 to 5.7W for the 1 TB unit, and 5.5 to 7.8 W for the larger models.

Microsoft reports first drop in quarterly earnings EVER
Bad economy, or Vista really sucks? Maybe both.
Microsoft today reported a 6% drop in year-over-year revenue for the quarter ending March 30, 2009. Microsoft's drop in net income was larger, falling 32% to $2.98 billion. Microsoft said that the Client, Microsoft Business Division, and Server & Tools divisions were "negatively impacted by weakness in the global PC and Server markets." In other words, PC sales are down. Microsoft expects "the weakness to continue through at least the next quarter."
One note of good news, for the economy at least: Microsoft says revenue from enterprise customers "remained stable".

OPTi wins $19m from Apple over patent infringement
OPTi on Thursday won a patent infringement suit against Apple, including $19 million in damages. The patent involved "predictive snooping" of cache memory for transferring information between a CPU, memory and other components. The jury ruled that Apple willingly infringed on OPTi's patent. Apple attempted to bring doubt to the patent's validity, but the jury ruled the patent to be valid.

Microsoft profits sink for the first time in 23 years
In a not-totally surprising -- yet still kind of striking -- turn of events, Microsoft is reporting that its sales have fallen for the first time in 23 years. You read that right, 23 years. According to numbers that the company has just released, sales fell 6 percent year-over-year, while overall net income dropped a staggering 32 percent. Those numbers are significant, but what's more telling is where those losses are coming from. Namely? Netbooks. Apparently, in the midst of a global downturn consumers really are buying cheaper, especially when it comes to tech, which puts a fairly significant crunch on Redmond's bottom line. The rather uneventful (yet somehow exciting) evolution of Wii MotionPlus
Some recently unearthed European legal filings show us the timeline of development for Wii's MotionPlus. Well -- it shows us what could have been, anyway. The image, starting to the left, shows the oldest version, with an insanely hideous curve that was dispensed with in favor of an outwardly leaning shape in the next iteration, while the far right shows what we essentially ended up with: a tiny little lip that some theorize may be a design element intended to help keep the jacket in place. New Windows 7 hack purports to be "unfixable"
A hack that's "unfixable" is a pretty bold claim, but that's just what researchers Vipin Kumar and Nitin Kumar have announced at the now-happening Hack in the Box security conference, and they seem ready to back it up. Apparently, they've devised a means to gain control of a Windows 7 computer during the boot up process though the use of a tiny 3KB program dubbed VBootkit 2.0 (a follow-up to a similar Vista hack), which loads itself into the system memory and bypasses the hard drive altogether, making it extremely difficult to detect. An anonymous post on the imageboard 4chan.org has provided MobileMe login details for Hollywood actress Salma Hayek, according to Electronic Pulp. The account apparently was not incredibly difficult to hack, carrying the address of shayek@mac.com. The intruders did not need her password, they simply used the "forgot password" option to access the contents.
