Kindle 2 gets its first firmware update
Looks like Amazon's widely rolling out the first Kindle 2 update -- we've actually been getting sporadic tips about it for a couple days now, but our unit didn't have an update option until today. Nothing huge to report here, but we're guessing that 2.0.2 allows publishers to selectively disable text-to-speech, which isn't exactly thrilling news. iTunes allows HD film purchases, rentals
Following the release of iTunes 8.1, Apple has announced that it will allow customers to download HD-quality movies. The content will be available to download or rent within 30 days after release. AT&T confirms sale of contract-free iPhones
AT&T has confirmed earlier rumors of a contract-free iPhone, says the Associated Press. Under the new scheme -- set to begin on Thursday, March 26th -- an 8GB iPhone 3G will cost $599, while a 16GB model will cost $699. iPhone Video hopes aren't dead yet...
Engadget spied a certain strange typo in the iPhone 3.0 development kit. Apple, who we know doesn't yet want video capabilities on the iPhone, forgot about that for a second and looks to have a screen to upload video to your MobileMe account. Perhaps this is the reason that Apple hasn't allowed the awesome Qik application to get accepted on the iPhone. Will Apple let third party video applications like Qik on the iPhone or will this be another MobileMe-only feature? We hope the former.

Is Apple Twittering?
According to Macworld, Apple has started their own Twitter account which covers the iTunes trailers. We aren't able to ascertain whether or not this is officially Apple's Twitter page and we do recollect that someone started an Apple Youtube Page which was thought to be an official Apple page. It turned out to be a hoax. This seems slightly more legit because there is a link from the apple.com/trailers page.

New iPhone models spotted in iPhone 3.0 OS, "iProd" and "iFPGA"
What have we here? It was only a matter of time (and it almost seems like Apple is leaking this on purpose at this point), but Ars found some extra little bits of code in the 3.0 OS that indicate that there will be not one but two new iPhones, a new iPod touch and two mysterious new products that will run this OS called "iProd" and "iFPGA".

iTunes Store problems affect developers
The troubles surrounding Apple's iTunes Store are affecting iPhone application developers. Two main issues are dominating discussions on developer boards: the app-update notification system for iTunes and iPhone/iPod Touch is falsely notifying users to update apps that are current, and the sort function for "Release Date" is not adding the newest apps. Samsung ships 16GB registered DDR3 sticks
Samsung established a record today by becoming the first to ship 16GB registered DDR3 memory. App-Entwicklung mangels Store-Freigabe eingestellt
"Die Idee ist gut, doch die Welt noch nicht bereit", sangen Tocotronic vor einigen Jahren - im App Store ist man anscheinend auch manchmal dieser Meinung. Zumindest FreedomVOICE Systems, Entwickler der iPhone App Newber, hat noch keine guten Nachrichten von Apple erhalten. ViewSonic prepping 22-inch laptop for China?
ViewSonic is mostly known for the display game, but in January the company got into netbooks this January, and now it looks like it's going after the complete opposite end of the spectrum with a 22-inch laptop for China (and hopefully elsewhere). Engadget spied a certain strange typo in the iPhone 3.0 development kit. Apple, who we know doesn't yet want video capabilities on the iPhone, forgot about that for a second and looks to have a screen to upload video to your MobileMe account. "Podium" ist ein schicker iPod-Ständer, der bisher noch nicht offiziell in Europa erhältlich ist. Wenn sich dies ändert, wird das Produkt möglicherweise bereits ein neuen Namen tragen, da Apples etwas gegen das "pod" in podium hat. Wenn es aktuell bei den Sockel-AM3-Mainboards auch nur ein kleines Problem gibt, dann ist es der Preis im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Platinen. Modifizierte Tintenstrahldrucker sollen Wundheilung verbessern
Wissenschaftler der North Carolina State University haben einen Weg gefunden, mittels modifizierter Tintenstrahldrucker die nahezu überall haftenden Proteine von Muscheln als Alternative zum Nähen offener Wunden einzusetzen. Lagerräumung: AT&T-iPhones ohne Vertragsbindung
Bei der jüngst vom US-amerikanischen Netzbetreiber AT&T angekündigten iPhone-Aktion wird es sich kaum nur um einen Frühjahrsputz handeln: Ebenso wie O2 in Großbritannien räumt man die Lager und bietet Bestandskunden den Kauf eines iPhone 3G ohne Vertragsbindung an. Produktpflege für EyeTV: Version 3.1.1 erschienen
Neues darf man nicht erwarten von der aktuellsten EyeTV-Version, sie ist nämlich nur ein Wartungs-Update, mit dem kleinere Fehler behoben werden. So ist ein Speicherleck bei der Wiedergabe von Live TV entfernt worden, und das Audioformat wird nicht mehr umgewandelt, wenn Sendungen als Elementary Streams exportiert werden. Anwender von Mac OS X 10.4.11 können EyeTV nun wieder manuell programmieren, ohne dass die Software einfriert. Weiterhin wurde ein Problem beim Ein- und Ausblenden des Teletextes ausgebessert.

Microsoft erklärt Ausfall von Windows Azure
Microsoft hat in einem Blog-Posting den mehrstündigen Ausfall seiner Cloud-Computing-Plattform Windows Azure am 13. März erklärt. Während eines routinemäßigen Updates des Betriebssystems sei es aufgrund von Netzwerkproblemen zu einer Verlangsamung des Vorgangs gekommen. Dies habe dann bei vielen Servern einen Timeout und schließlich deren Ausfall verursacht.

Exakter Termin für AMDs Phenom II X4 955
Mit dem Sockel AM3 stieg AMD ebenfalls auf den DDR3-Zug auf. Das derzeitige Spitzenmodell, der Phenom II X4 940 mit einer Taktrate von 3,0 GHz, setzt allerdings noch auf den älteren Sockel AM2+ und damit einhergehend auf DDR2-Speicher. Im April soll sich das allerdings mit dem Phenom II X4 955 ändern.

Mac security researcher wins Pwn2Own contest
In a repeat performance of last year, security researcher Charlie Miller arrived at the CanSecWest conference this week with a prepared exploit to use in cracking Safari running on Mac OS X. The Register thinks Imagination's SGX543MP video chip may go into a tablet
Those pesky tablet rumors won't die. Today's entry is from The Register who are reporting (via MR) on Imagination's new multi-core graphics chips. Imagination PowerVR chips are the video chips currently inside Apple's iPhones and iPod Touches. Apple, of course, is also an investor in Imagination Technologies, as is Intel.
The speculation is that the new multi-core chips, originally announced in January, would go inside future Apple mobile products. Tablet deniers would say those chips are bound for future iPhones and iPods - and they probably are right.

Psystar introduces new compact desktops running OSX
You've got to hand it to them. They might not have a chance in hell of existing at the end of the year but they sure seem to be playing the business as usual face pretty well. In the midst of a huge lawsuit with one of the world's biggest (and litigious) companies, Psystar is forging ahead with new products. Their new compact desktop, which is cheaper than Apple but more expensive than a DIY type of machine, is now available to consumers through its website. They even include the self-depreciating caption: "Sexier: Ummm, no comment". Psystar certainly know their prospective customers.

More iPhone 3.0 features: Tethering and Find my iPhone
The onslaught of iPhone 3.0 features continues:
A developer has found that that tethering both via USB and Bluetooth is possible under the 3.0 beta developer release (of course, those of us with Jailbroken iPhones won't be too impressed with this). It isn't immediately clear how AT&T and the other carriers will be able to distinguish who is tethering and who isn't. Apple will have to coordinate the locking and unlocking with the carriers.

AT&T second line iPhone to clear out iPhone 3G inventory
BGR's AT&T Ninjas got their mitts on an AT&T internal presentation which seems to indicate that they are going to be unloading some 3G iPhones at $599 and $699 no commitment pricing (which is much lower than their previous no commitment prices) starting on March 26th. Don't take our word for it, but it looks like this might be an inventory clearing measure. ForsayJunish?

Hanwha's Duo for Laptop lets you doodle on your standard 15.4-inch laptop
Here's a novel idea -- turning one's standard, non-tablet PC into a tablet PC. Hanwha Japan has just introduced its incredibly useful Duo for Laptop device, which sits gently atop one's laptop display and tracks digital pen movements via Infrared and ultrasonic technology in order to add doodling functionality to LCDs that were never designed to understand touch input. The only limitation -- and it's a big one -- is that this seems to only work with lappies possessing a 15.4-inch display.
