Broadband stimulus plan comes to life, rural teens 'psyched'
The broadband stimulus project is moving forwards in the manner most familiar to our federal bureaucracy: meetings. Lots and lots of meetings. The inaugural soiree was recently held at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's swank Washington, D.C. headquarters, and included bon mots such as this one by acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps: "Where's the policy for broadband? Where's the action? Where's the beef?" Ouch. Panasonic's ultra-thin 54Z1 plasma in the wild
Now that it's official and priced, Panasonic seems much happier to show off its wireless HD-sporting, ultra-thin Z1 series, and it's quite the sight to behold. The 54Z1 we got to look at was very strikingly clad in brushed metal gray -- compared to the regular black of most of Panasonic's TV lineup -- and of course incredibly thin. The wireless HD receiver box was across the room and working flawlessly, and it was nice to see that the included remote is an RF unit, capable of non-line-of-sight channel changing -- it's starting to feel like the 21st century around here! Musical bra is not as sexy as it sounds
The fine folks over at Instructables have posted some wild mods in their time, but the musical bra you see above inhabites its own realm in terms of weirdness and lack of usefulness unless you really want a bra that makes music of course. Panasonic CES 2009 Blu-ray / HTIB lineup eyes-on
We were able to spot a few of Panasonic's latest innovations in the home theater space back at CES 2009, but we got a much more intimate look at things during a recent New York showcase. O2 to drop prices before iPhone 3G replacement?
UK phone carrier O2 is poised to drop prices on the iPhone 3G come May, claims a regional magazine. Mobile cites exclusive information, pointing to the device becoming free with £35 or £45 per month subscriptions. Samsung's MBP200 pico PJ, i7410 projector phone get ship dates

HP Mini 1000 VGA cables: hard to get, hard to use?
HP's Mini 1000 certainly hasn't had much difficultly attracting its share of fans, but it looks like those wanting to hook the netbook up to an external monitor have been having their patience tested considerably as of late. Apple will nächsten Dienstag einen ersten Ausblick auf die nächste Version des iPhone- (und natürlich auch iPod touch-) Betriebssystems geben. Für die um 10 Uhr Orstzeit in Cupertino/Kalifornien stattfindende Veranstaltung wurden heute Einladungen an amerikanische Journalisten verschickt.

OLPC eyes ARM processors for the XO-2
According to an interview in PC World, the OLPC crew are looking to adopt ARM processors for the next iteration of their feel good laptop. Its extremely low power draw and the system on chip possibilities make this move a no-brainer, until you consider the fact that plans for the XO-2 call for a dual-boot Linux / Windows machine -- as of yet, Microsoft has declined to make a full-blown Windows OS for ARM. Erste Benchmarks zum iMac 24” mit NVIDIA GeForce GT 130
Pcmag.com hat den iMac 24” mit NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Grafikkarte getestet und spricht dem Modell im Gegensatz zum iMac 24” Zoll mit 9400M-Grafikchip keine “Editor’s” Choice”-Empfehlung aus. Dennoch wird betont, dass der zusätzliche und schnellere RAM sowie die aktualisierte Grafikkarte bessere Ergebnisse im Vergleich zur alten 3,06-GHz Variante mit 880GS-Grafikchip liefern, wenn es um CS4-Tests oder 3D-Gaming geht. Wo der neue iMac ein Framerate von 48 bei einem Spiel wie Crysis (Auflösung 1280 x 1024) Bildpunkte schafft, lag die Bildwiederholungsrate im Fall des Vorgängermodells bei 36. Somit bestätigt zumindest das PCmag nicht die derzeitigen Diskussionen, ob das NVIDIA-Modell GT 130 nicht sogar weniger leistungsfähig als die alte 8800-GS-Grafikkarte sei.

Im Grunde gleichen sich der Einsteiger- und der Top-24-Zoll-iMac in vielen Punkten, beim Prozessortakt (2,666 GHz zu 3,06 GHz) und bei der Festplattengröße (640 GB zu 1 TB) unterscheiden sie sich aber. Das wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmal dürfte aber der Schritt von der integrierten Grafik-Hardware GeForce 9400M zu der diskreten GeForce GT 130 mit 512 MB Speicher sein. Was dieser Unterschied - neben dem um 700 Euro höheren Preis - ausmacht und wie sich das 24-zöllige Vorgängermodell (GeForce 8800 GS mit 512 MB Speicher) dagegen schlägt, hat das PC Magazine untersucht.

ATi RV790 doch „mehr anders“ als gedacht?
Wenn moderne Rechenchips entwickelt werden, versucht man das Pin-Layout immer kompatibel zum Vorgängerprodukt zu halten. In diesem Fall kann man die alte Platine weiter benutzen oder muss diese nur teilweise ändern. Google hat einen kurzzeitigen Ausfall seines E-Mail-Dienstes bestätigt. Ab Dienstag zehn Uhr deutscher Zeit konnten einige Google-Apps-Nutzer nicht auf Google Mail zugreifen. Nach Auskunft eines Google-Sprechers dauerte die Störung für die meisten Betroffenen nur etwa 30 Minuten. Die volle Funktionalität konnte das Unternehmen jedoch erst am Mittwoch gegen acht Uhr nach rund 22 Stunden wieder herstellen.

iTunes DJ & Touch-Remote: iPod-Party mit vielen DJs
Apple hat die Funktionalität der im App Store erhältlichen Fernbedienung für den iPod touch und das iPhone (App Store-Link) deutlich erweitert. iTunes in der neuesten Version 8.1 vorausgesetzt, kann man auf Parties nun seine iPod touch- oder iPhone-besitzenden Freunde an der Musikauswahl teil haben lassen.
Die zuvor als Party-Jukebox bekannte DJ-Funktion von iTunes heißt nach dem Update auf Version 8.1 iTunes DJ und bringt einen erweiterten Einstellungsdialog mit. Dort lässt sich festlegen, ob man Gästen mit iPod touch oder iPhone erlauben will, sich Songs zu wünschen.

Viliv S5 MID detailed impressions, now with video!
We got to play with the Viliv S5 at CES, and now the gang at UMPC Portal have some detailed impressions they'd like to share with the world. The haptic touchscreen device has "one of the best" on-screen keyboards this reviewer's seen, although it pales in comparison to a physical keyboard. Other minor issues include a lack of a microphone and physical mouse pointer, though you could quite conceivably get along just fine without 'em. That said, this bad boy apparently has "an overall good feeling" that makes the reviewer want to use the device more and give the touchscreen typing situation "a chance." Panasonic's 2009 VIERA Cast Blu-ray players priced, shipping in April
We first got a peek at Panasonic's DMP-BD60, DMP-BD80 and VHS-packing DMP-BD70V at CES, and now they've got official pricetags ahead of their April release. Beyond the VIERA Cast support for Amazon VOD, YouTube and other Internet content, this year's decks also include improvements in power consumption, with the BD60 drawing 16% less juice than last year's DMP-BD35. The DMP-BD60 can be had for a suggested $299, while the BD80 and BD70V are both priced at $399, depending on whether you prefer VHS or 7.1 analog outputs. Check out the
