Raleigh, North Carolina buses get on-board DTV
Planning to hop on a bus in Raleigh, North Carolina anytime soon? Then there's a chance you could be treated to an added distraction during your trip, as the city has just rolled out its first CAT bus equipped with mobile DTV, which looks to be one of the first projects resulting from those MPH tests that took place last year. REALbasic 2009 Release 2 adds MySQL, Studio Edition
REAL has posted REALbasic 2009 Release 2, the latest version of its cross-platform development suite. Motorola looking to produce a connected GPS unit?
Motorola's navigation line certainly isn't the firms most notable, but the Garmins and TomToms of the world are probably taking notice after an intriguing quote from product line manager Blake Bullock. Microsoft posts trial edition of Office 2008 for Mac
Microsoft has released a trial edition of Office 2008 for Mac. The download is free, but operates only for 30 days before a paid registration key is required, at which point it can be converted into either a Standard or Home & Student edition. Toshiba roadmap shows full-touch phone focus
Toshiba had its long-term smartphone plans revealed today through a leak by Greek site Techblog and is now known to be focusing very heavily on full touchscreen devices. After the TG01 launches this summer, the TG02 will appear at the end of the year with an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 as well as a water-resistant shell. It should have the same 4.1-inch touchscreen, 3G, GPS and likely Wi-Fi.

We've been getting friendly with iriver's latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of "interesting" functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a "mere" media player and leave it at that. Beatles Rock Band bundle will boast Höfner bass, Ludwig-branded drums
Not really surprising to hear, but exciting none the less according to a teaser email sent out to people on The Beatles: Rock Band mailing list -- the special edition bundle will include a custom branded Höfner bass and Ludwig drums. The email also mentions other "custom" content, which we are hoping will be either a Rickenbacker guitar like the one Lennon often used or a gigantic Harrison-esque moustache / beard combo. Windows XP transitions out of Mainstream Support phase
It may only be a footnote in the long history of Windows XP, but Microsoft has confirmed today that, as planned, the venerable OS has finally and officially transitioned from the Mainstream Support phase to the Extended Support phase. Cowon releases 32GB S9 PMP in Korea
Cowon's done a commendable job in making the S9 a force to be reckoned with in the PMP arena, but the 16GB maximum has likely caused quite a few music aficionados to look elsewhere. At long last, the company is releasing a 32GB flavor over in South Korea, though it'll cost you a stiff ₩379,000 ($287) for the privileged of ownership. There's no word on a US release, but we'd wager that it'll be here within a month or two. Right, Cowon?

Philips-Umsatz mit Unterhaltungselektronik bricht um 33 Prozent ein
Philips hat heute Zahlen (PDF) für das erste Quartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2009 vorgelegt. Der Umsatz in allen Geschäftsbereichen ist im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal weltweit um 15 Prozent auf rund fünf Milliarden Euro zurückgegangen. Während der Umsatz mit Medizintechnik lediglich um zwei Prozent rückläufig war, brach das Geschäft mit Lichttechnik um 19 Prozent ein. Bei "Consumer Lifestyle", dem dritten Standbein des niederländischen Elektronikkonzerns, sackten die Verkaufserlöse sogar um 25 Prozent ein. Besonders schlimm erwischte es den Absatz von Fernsehgeräten sowie Audio- und Video-Produkten (minus 33 Prozent).

Mobile data card growth slows dramatically in Q4 2008
Who woulda thunk it? A global recession leads to belt tightening, and belt tightening leads to fewer mobile data card sales. According to a new report from ComScore, that's exactly what happened at the tail end of last year, where WWAN card growth slowed to just 5 percent compared to 28 percent in Q4 2007. Increased Price per Tracks on Online Music Stores: The Worst Strategy?
Last week, Apple finally agreed to offer a variable pricing policy for music tracks on the iTunes Store, breaking the past 0.99 USD/track strategy to make Music Majors happy. If one will have to search hard to find music tracks with lower than 0.99 USD price tag, as supposed to be according to the PR from Music Majors, everyone noticed the large price increased applied to many artists. The US website Billboard publishes the Top 100 ranking for both songs and artist, and specifically analzed which ones were affected among its Top 100 panel over the first 48 hours following the price increase.

We really, really doubt that Apple would go in this direction - although Apple does have some patents that indicate thay are thinking Unibody iPods and iPhones. On the other hand, we saw those black matte posterior images from before which seemed fairly real.

Seit einigen Tagen ist das dreistufige Preissystem im iTunes Store aktiv. Populäre Titel kosten bis zu 1,29 Euro, andere Songs werden schon für 69 Cent abgesetzt. Toshiba's leaked product roadmap gets us hot, extra bothered by fuel-cell powered L01 MID
If the roadmap posted after the break is to be believed (and we think it is) then Toshiba is set to capture a lot of attention with its Snapdragon-based handhelds over the coming year. Techblog has what it claims to be the Toshiba Device Roadmap through 2010. They've shown us a PowerPoint sample off-line that seems to support the claim. SoftM steigert bei rückläufigem Umsatz operatives Ergebnis
Die SoftM Software und Beratung AG hat ihre Jahresbilanz 2008 vorgelegt. Insgesamt erzielten die Münchner einen Umsatz von 56,6 Millionen Euro, gut drei Millionen Euro weniger als im Vorjahr. Das operative Ergebnis ohne einmalige Kosten, Aufwendungen für Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen stieg jedoch von 3,0 auf 3,8 Millionen Euro. Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass das Ergebnis 2007 durch einen einmaligen Ertrag von 2,4 Millionen Euro aus der Veräußerung eines verbundenen Unternehmens positiv beeinflusst war.

Seagate verzeichnet geringeren Umsatzrückgang als erwartet
Seagate hat vorläufigen Zahlen zufolge im dritten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 3. April) rund 2,1 Milliarden Dollar umgesetzt. Damit fiel der Umsatzrückgang gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres (3,1 Milliarden Dollar) geringer aus als erwartet. Hohe Marge: Bauteile des iPod shuffle kosten nur 22 US-Dollar
Gerade erst hatte Microsoft die Existenz der Apple Steuer mit komplexen Berechnungen bewiesen. Nun folgt auf den Fuß ein weiterer Beweis für überzogene Apple-Margen. Das US-amerikanische Wirtschaftsmagazin BusinessWeek berichtet, dass die Bauteile inklusive Verpackung und Kopfhörer des neusten iPods zusammen gerade einmal 22 US-Dollar kosten. Wer will Windows 7?
Vor kurzem hieß es noch vom Gartner-Analysten Michael Silver, dass es für Windows 7 wichtig wäre, sich gut zu verkaufen. Der Ruf von Vista sei zu schlecht, Microsoft brauche jetzt ein starkes System. Wie Electronista berichtet, zeigt nun aber eine Studie, dass im nächsten Jahr noch 83 Prozent aller Arbeitsplätze im Unternehmensumfeld noch auf den Umstieg verzichten werden.

Skype-Gründer planen angeblich Rückkauf des Unternehmens
Niklas Zennström und Janus Friis wollen der New York Times zufolge das von ihnen gegründete Unternehmen Skype von Ebay zurückkaufen. Demnach haben die beiden Unternehmer mehrere private Beteiligungsgesellschaften angesprochen, die rund eine Milliarde Dollar für die Transaktion zur Verfügung stellen sollen. Den Rest des auf 2 Milliarden Dollar geschätzten Kaufpreises soll Ebay nach Auskunft einer mit den Gesprächen vertrauten Quelle den Käufern stunden.

Seit Apple den App Store für Drittanbieter geöffnet hat, überschlagen sich die Absätze. OQO looking for buyer, Model 2+ future in limbo?
Oh no, OQO. According to some chatter on the OQOTALK forums, the company's in dire financial straits and is looking to sell, and that the Model 2+ may be the last OQO device made, if it ever gets released. More worrisome, European retailer eXpansys is reportedly canceling orders for the MID and removing all the company's products from the site, due to what it's telling customers is "uncertainties to stock availability." Bluetooth 3.0 to Be unveiled on April 21st
According to the last information from the web, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group will officially unveil the third version of this wireless format on April 21st. During the IDF 2009, Intel made a demo of a hardware based on Nehalem EX. The current Xeon Nehalem powering the new Mac Pro belongs to the EP series. The Nehalem EX will be available up to 8 core CPU, but one can install 4 or 8 units on the same motherboard. Hereafter is the task manager on Windows for a computer powered by four Octo Core Xeon Nehalem EX; in other words, 32 physical cores or 64 logic cores thank to hyperthreading. In order to feed such CPUs, there are interconnected with 4 QPI link, and each CPU is able to manage simultaneously 4 RAM modules (for a total of 16 in the current example)

According to their evaluation, Apple could save 72% out of the current retail price. In details, the 4 GB memory chip will cost 6 USD, while the entire electronic part will be less than 6 USD. Once assembled, equipped with the earphones and properly packed, it should not cost more than 22 USD So it is a rather substantial margin for Apple, even if you add the not evaluated shipping, localization, design and R&D costs. RSS feeds may cause high CPU usage in Mail
Apple's Mail application can sometimes eat up RAM and CPU cycles. This is an old issue in which the e-mail client will use more than 90 percent of the CPU after being open for a while, the system will slow, and its fans will start blaring.

Dell Mini 9 hacked for 3G use with some difficulty
Folks discovered some time ago that Dell's stock Mini 9 just wasn't made for 3G, but that doesn't look to have stopped MyDellMini forum member Jingo5, who saw an opening on the netbook's motherboard and ran with it. As you might expect, however, that didn't exactly prove to be the easiest course of action to take, with it involving a modified 855u Sierra USB adapter, a good deal of soldering, and a fair measure of skill to ensure that the whole thing didn't backfire. He was also apparently able to pull an antenna off the LAN card to improve reception with little consequence, and even get it working under OS X using Sierra's own 3G app. Feeling brave
